About 4 hours in, playing on Gamepass. And man, it’s exactly what I was hoping it would be. So much heart. Going to have to snag this one physically on switch soon as they go up for sale!!
I was super excited about chained echoes and still want to play it, but I’ve been waiting for this gem from Sabatoge since it’s reveal and I’m glad I did. Such a delight I can’t wait to play more.
Just started playing this morning and loving it so far. Was a bit worried about there not being a quest log and forgetting what I was supposed to be doing but I noticed when you camp if you talk to each other it tells you your current objectives. If I can I’ll try and stop near a campfire when I’m done for the day 😊
Wow, what a rating! Can’t believe we are getting so many great new JRPGs that are heavily inspired by the classics like Sea of Stars, Chained Echoes, just hoping that Alterium Shift comes to Switch soon!

Been waiting for this game for years, literally. The messenger was one of my favorite games the year it came out, and so naturally I was interested in the next title of the developer. I've been playing it on game pass and thus far it hasn't disappointed at all. In fact, I've decided to buy it on steam so that I can have it on my steam deck. Honestly, the map stuff and the journal stuff doesn't bother me, it gives the game a more organic experience and I'm cool with that. The one issue I have with this game is just that it happened to come out during a time when I've already got a ton of games that I'm playing. Baldur's gate 3, tears of the kingdom, path of exile, blasphemous 2 etc.
Played a couple hours already today over on Game Pass and am loving it. I think you're right about needing a map with waypoints OR some kind of quest log would've be icing on the cake. When the physical comes out, I'll definitely be picking it up on Switch.
I wish games were made a little more like the old school games of Chrono trigger and final fantasy vi. There were no way points or maps of dungeons. There was no quest log. They were made in a way that those things were not necessary.

Has to be one of my favorite games ever! When in the 2024 is the physical coming out? I will probably buy 2 copies one to put up and one to play if I want.
Great review! The pixel art is just lovely in the game. Would you guys consider adding in your reviews whether screen shake can be disabled? Screen shake gives me a headache so it would be nice to know ahead of purchasing the game if that can be turned off.

I've been waiting for you guys' review. Your critiques are always spot-on with my tastes. While the game sounds delightful in many regards, the lack of a quest log and maps would drive me mad. Hopefully the devs are giving some thought to how to add those in a patch. It'll go in the wishlist for now... maybe I'll snag the physical copy when it comes along.
Loved this game so much. Did every side quest. Put in about 40 hours. Bought The Messenger after beating just so I could play the “sequel.” AMAZING game. So relaxing and beautiful. Whimsical and fun. Came at a time in my life I really needed it too. 9/10 for me great game.
I think it's safe to say that it is a good game overall when you consider all the reviews it's getting. Whether you'll vibe with it and like it is a different story.

Can't get to it for a while, but it's been on my wish list forever and was an easy day one purchase. Chrono Trigger is hands down my favorite JRPG, and Sea of Stars pushes almost every nostalgia button I have. And I love seeing small indie studios knock it out of the park like this. 🙂
I backed the kickstarter for the game and got my code last night. I got to play about 30 minutes before bed. I’m so excited to dive deeper into this world! Thanks for the heads up about no mini map or quest log. I’ll have to pay attention.

Hope that if they add a map/questlog, they make a toggle on/off option, for those who want to be more immersed in the game.
Started playing this today after a grief-y day at work. Really hit the spot, enjoying it and I have never played chrono trigger. It's just an entertaining story above all.
This title was on my list of upcoming games I was looking forward to a while back and since then I hadn't looked too much into it. So upon release I was trying to remember why I was excited for this game, especially since the art isn't really that impressive to me (despite having a huge appreciation for pixel/Sprite art over polygons). Then upon watching this review seeing the combat, hearing about the unskippable dialogue and and the platforming puzzle I remembered ahhh this might be the closest thing I'll get the Golden Sun style game for some time, so I can't wait to play. Thanks for the review!
I had to reload a save to go check out some texts I missed because I accidentally fast-forwarded it, if you just hold the right shoulder button it should fast forward the dialogue
I just got this free with PS Plus. Value rating through the roof there. I will certainly be giving it a go, and possibly doing a deep dive once I’ve finished the 10,000 games I’m trying to finish. Just like everyone else I guess.
Do want to drop in and point out that the flare after hitting “a” isn’t a hint, it’s to give deaf or hard of hearing players feedback they can see, instead of an audio cue. So glad you liked it, I am going to take the plunge. As for the quest log... My screenshot gallery has plenty of conversations from lots of games 😅, I am quick to forget
This game looks like a great candidate for the vibrant mode of the OLED Switch 😏 I'm really glad this turned out well! This video got me all excited for the game, haha, but I'm gonna wait for the physical release. If I manage to control myself 😅 Thanks for the review, this was very nicely balanced - super helpful when a game has been as hyped up as this one 😅
Bought this today. But haven’t played yet. Needed to check out the only review that matters before I dive in. Thanks as always for the fabulous review!
I'm glad I watched this review. I had started the game but saw some naysayers calling it too simplistic or comparing it apples to apples with Chained Echoes so much so that I put it down and walked away. I think I'm going to redownload and start a new file with a fresh perspective
Regarding the quest log, when you camp and you speak to your companions they have text related to your current task. I'm still in the early parts of the game so I'll keep checking if this is actually how they keep you on track. I might be wrong though.
What a great review. As good as this game is, I get the feeling that it's a bit of a video game equivalent of "Oscar bait" where it's so indie and artsy that pointing out any criticism against it instantly brands you as a mainstream pleb. That's the feeling I got from a lot of other reviews of this game that spent most of the time gushing about how it's a revival of Chrono Trigger and how Masuda did the music score, but neglected to give a wholistic review of the actual player experience. But the Switchup review is so candid and gives ample praise where it is due while speaking out for the average gamer.
Been so hyped for this game since they showed it at Indie World 2021. Today was the fastest I’ve ever spent $35. Can’t wait till the physical release AND I hope iam8bit does a limited edition. I freakin love this game already!

I played this game yesterday for almost 4 straight hours (for me that's a long time) and I loved every second of it. This is very reminiscent of 90s rpg's. From Golden Sun, Lufia, and of course Chrono Trigger. I love the score as well. The beautiful environments are just as captivating. This game is a 9.5/10 for me
My first 4 hours are confirming everything I assumed based on the quality of The Messenger, the demo, the documentary and the creative director's streams about his design philosophy. 9/10; the writing is a bit weaker than I expected, but everything else is stellar. GOTY so far for me.
I played the demo for this but it didn't grab me. I then saw it was available to play on PS4+ so I thought I'll give it a go. For the first 30 mins I was thinking meh, nothing new and then the story opened up a bit and I must say I now love it. Looks stunning and the combat is so much fun. Glad I carried on playing!
I was waiting for the review for this game. Am so happy it got a great review. However I think I will wait for the physical copy in 2024. My switch has been ditched at the moment with life getting in the way and I still have a lot of on my backlog. I will definitely pick it up though.😊
I'm definitely going to get this one soon! I'm still busy with Tears of the Kingdom, and I also got Vampire Survivors and Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope last week, so it will have to wait a little. But I'll get it for sure. Thanks for the review.
I just have one question: I noticed that you do pick up new party members as you progress in the game, yet you always have the two main protagonists in the battles. Can you not switch them out? Is that the additional characters can only be swapped out with one slot for them?
I have a PC deck and Oled Switch but have been not sure where to get this on to be honest. Part of me wants it on the Switch, haven't seen if it has any downgrades vs PC
I haven’t seen any other reviews mention the lack of map and quest log. That is a bummer for me as well but I’m looking forward to playing this on Gamepass. Might splurge on a Switch physical next year if it gets it’s hooks in me.
I'm playing it on Steam as I listen to this. Still early in, but it is fantastic so far. I will almost certainly get a physical copy for Switch next year.
id say its really the old jrpg alive.Especially at later stages,u need to discover all ur sides quests without any hints.Exploration is huge in this game
Ooooh, love a good rpg. Camping this week, had to give up balders gate 3 for a week...the withdrawls...hitting hard. Guess I'll have to keep going on zelda. Life's rough. This looks good though, reminds me a but of Lufia 2 rise of the sinistrals.
@@SwitchUpYtIt's so good, I thought it was hype so I gave it a try to support them for being pro gamer. But, man, have I just been having so much fun. Thanks for the great review, Mark! I looked up the channel just to see if you guys made a review about this game and of course you did 😌 Really looking forward to playing this game!
I understand your criticisms but at the same time don't think they would bother me at all. What they marketed and sold was a classic SNES style jrpg game and none of the SNES jrpg games have maps or quest logs either. At the bare minimum I expect a classic SNES experience, and so any modern QOL change's they DID decide to do are just bonus, not expected by me. Thanks for the nice review. It was very good.
backed this three years ago, just played for 12 hours and damn it’s amazing, that ost is one of the best i’ve heard! could be up there with chrono trigger after finishing it if it keeps it up
I'm so happy the Physical is next year...gives me chance to get to it after Chained Echoes. I don't know that Sea of Stars will usurp Chained Echoes for me personally, but more high quality games of this genre is no bad thing!
World map and encounters feel like Chrono Trigger. Towns and dungeons resemble Secret of Mana. Actual battle feels like FF8, turn-base and interactive skill execution. And then, of course there's music by Yasunori Mitsuda.
First review that acknowledges Chained Echoes. That game comes from the same love of old rpg and does everything so well. I've played 2h of Sea of stars and I prefer Chained Echoes so far :).
Thanks for this review Mark. I have been highly anticipated on snatching this one up. Since I do love my jrpgs once in awhile. I quickly snatched this up on steam since it's on sale. I'll gladly be happy to pick this up again on physical down the road to once that drops.

My first 4 hours are confirming everything I assumed based on the quality of The Messenger, the demo, the documentary and the creative director's streams about his design philosophy. 9/10; the writing is a bit weaker than I expected, but everything else is stellar. GOTY so far for me.
Ah good stuff glad you're enjoying it mate - let me know how you feel at the end :) Mark
It's delightful, beautiful and nostalgic, I need this in my life
I'm definitely going to get this one soon!
Thank you. No log for missions is a hard pass for me. Struggle even in Zelda TOTK on what to do next.
Looks good. What is the framerate? Dealbreaker for me when deciding Switch vs Steam.
How you guys find this hold up versus for example Octopath Traveler?
This and chained echos are the two games I will definitely play even though I'm not the greatest jrpg fan
Can't believe both this and Chained Echoes came out day one on Xbox game pass. Great time to be alive!
I have a PC deck and Oled Switch but have been not sure where to get this on to be honest. Part of me wants it on the Switch, haven't seen if it has any downgrades vs PC
This one is up there next to crosscode! Have you reviewed crosscode?
Must Have, Must Play!!! It's on my weekend lineup otherwise I'd stay up too late and miss work for the rest of the week
How is this out ive looked it says 10th may it comes out this year
I haven’t seen any other reviews mention the lack of map and quest log.
Been waiting for this for sometime now. Its a great day!
Yeah I think there will be lots of people having a great time today! Mark
I can’t seem to find chained echoes…
Aha! Finally! I have been waiting!
Let's find out! 😋
Hope you like it!
id say its really the old jrpg alive.Especially at later stages,u need to discover all ur sides quests without any hints.Exploration is huge in this game
Ooooh, love a good rpg. Camping this week, had to give up balders gate 3 for a week...the withdrawls...hitting hard. Guess I'll have to keep going on zelda. Life's rough. This looks good though, reminds me a but of Lufia 2 rise of the sinistrals.
BG3 is probably the best RPG I have ever played in fairness! Mark
@@SwitchUpYtIt's so good, I thought it was hype so I gave it a try to support them for being pro gamer. But, man, have I just been having so much fun. I thought about shuffling assets around to literally get a steam deck just to play. 😅😅 until I started asking around at battery life, 1 hour sounds like average for bg3....
Looking forward to this. Next on the list after I've finished Blasphemous II!
A game made with care, a masterpiece.
Anyone else getting overall vibes of Golden Sun. With a hint of Mario&Luigi with the timing in battles.
Was waiting for a review from ya, one of the few reviewers I trust
I’m so tempted to buy it but man I want a physical copy and not digital
Might check this out after I finish with baldur's gate 3.
Loved the demo, and have it on my wishlist...future backlog list...?
Great review, lack of a map and quest logs tho will do my head in as I get sidetracked very easily in most RPGs.
Think I will wait for a sale on this.
backed this three years ago, just played for 12 hours and damn it’s amazing, that ost is one of the best i’ve heard! could be up there with chrono trigger after finishing it if it keeps it up
I'm so happy the Physical is next year...gives me chance to get to it after Chained Echoes.
Bought it last night. Loving it so far.
Wow, this is for sure one of the best ratings I've seen you guys give. It looks very deserved too. Wondering if I should play this one or Chained Echoes first.
They are both very special. But I have to say Chained Echoes is just amaaaazing.
@@SiobhanR28 thanks! My birthday is this week and I'm thinking of gifting one of these to myself lol
Get CE first. SOS may have future updates.
@@SiobhanR28chained echoes is definitely the more complete game and just a overall experience. I plan on getting SOS as soon as a physical gets dropped tho
I don’t wish the physical was out at launch it means the game will be the most complete on the cartridge with the latest updates without the need to download from the internet
