This is one of the most beautiful looking games I’ve seen in a long time. I will take art direction and design over graphical powerhouses any day.
Agreed!
Hear hear!
Stylistic art over realistic graphics anyday!
I wish triple A developers thought the same way and spent their time and resources on providing us with great gameplay experiences instead of trying to make super realistic hair physics and shiny water just to please some people online who would call their games unplayable otherwise
I hope ain't difficult as Octopath Traveler was!👀🤣
The developers were so incredibly focused on giving all of us a fantastic classic style rpg and from what I can tell they totally nailed it!
The Messenger is an incredible game that I would recommend to anyone. This isn't normally my type of game but I'm excited to see what else this team can do
Will need to try it out but Also will buy this game
2nd this, really good mix of retro and new
It says it’s a prequel to The Messenger.
Worth noting The Messenger is 5 bucks on Steam right now. Grabbed it last night because it always looked fun.
Def going to pick this up, whether I like it or not at least it will support developers because this deserves support.
If it's good.
@@SCAMDEMIC2023It is good. You completed the Demo yet? Well then.
@@Wil_Dsense Demo? Gonna try it out.
That's a terrible reason lol
@@MemeinAndDreamin not really? The game looks awesome, why wouldn’t I support them?
I tried the demo on a whim and I was really impressed. I grew up on old Final fantasy jrpgs. The turned based combat feels nostalgic but also fresh in how you can block and crit by hitting the right button at the right time. The one puzzle the demo had was really well done. I downloaded the game last night and I can't wait to play it later tonight.
Beyond stoked to get this tomorrow. Developers like this deserve all our support.
Aye, most definitely, they have our support. I’m glad games like this are still being developed it’s charming.
Agreed. For that reason I am buying it on Switch even though it’s available on GamePass. Well, that and I want to experience it w/ Bluetooth audio.
@@tr1co0you’re the best kind of ppl
Yes, they're keeping the classic RPG alive. I bought Baldur Gates 3 and now I'm buying this one too.
I wish Square enix would understand that's what we expect from Final fantasy
First turn based rpg that picks my interest in like 15 years. The gameplay additions and explorations really set it apart
Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 are masterpieces as well.
Piques* your interest, and mine too
Dude, me too. I honestly really dislike turn based RPGs but I am so on board for this one.
@@stryfetc1471thanks, I was like “REALLY” you should play Octopath!!!
@@lordrikudouzero9119 I beat the first one, still playing pt 2 currently, trying to grind to high levels for all characters before I take on the TRUE final boss. And still have a couple chapters with Agnea and Cassti who I didn't use much.
played the demo of this game and i loved the art style and gameplay! might have to wait to get the physical release tbh, i need this in the collection
Yeah I wanted to aswell, but it’s not coming out til 2024… plus The cover art is mediocre at best… if it doesn’t have a booklet or anything then I don’t see the point in waiting for physical to play it. I might get it anyway just to get the game cart.
@@Wil_Dsensebackers are getting a limited print through LRG. Check and see if it isn't too late for you to become a backer.
Same, waiting for physical release
@@bregowine you’ll be waiting along time then just to play this Game. Why not just get both
I'll wait for physical on switch starfield is around the corner
the only game for switch im waiting for this year. played the demo and usually i don't even like these types of games, but sea of stars is just wow.
Not even Zelda or Pikmin?
@@chunkymonkey7983 Or Mario RPG or Mario Wonder?
@@MylesB93- Facts I'm so hyped for those
Same boat for me, turn based RPGs are usually a big turn off but the demo convinced me to get this day 1.
Man really was sleep in one of the best gaming years in recent memory
Who would ever doubt Sabotage Studios? They’ve proven themselves to be one of THE premier indie studios on the planet, and having Rainbowdragoneyes on staff to provide music makes them unstoppable. The fact that Yasunori Mitsuda contributed to the soundtrack tells you that these guys are the real deal and not to be underestimated.
This will be a day one purchase when the physical version gets released this winter. So hyped!
How do you know it will get a physical version?
@@JorgeSilva-yi8wk the developers announced it
12:33 Looks like Sabotage Studios placed a Jirard the Completionist cameo in the game! What an awesome easter egg.
jirard was also big fan messenger, thats why probably
Well that didn’t age too well lol
This aged horribly
These small developers are killing it the past couple years. My switch is filled with so many great small indi games I hardly have time to finish them all.
I was already interested by the demo but knowing Yasunori Mitsuda had composed soundtracks for the game sealed the deal now I must get this
I tried the demo and i fell in love instantly, i got sold for the mario and luigi like battle gameplay; a must buy imo
I was on the fence, you convinced me NintendoLife. Love this channel
This looks amazing! I have been looking forward to this for awhile. I still need to play Chained Echoes too. We are in a golden age of RPGs and I'm loving it! Still working my way through the Trails games too!
Chained echoes is great, I haven't finished it but I put a ton of time into and enjoyed it thoroughly you get mech suits as well.
It's pretty difficult at points though
Hell yea! Chained echoes was sooooo good. The only place where it kinda dropped the ball imo was the side quests, but otherwise a quality game with some emotional and wtf moments.
@@TROBassGuitaryeah i saw that it can be pretty unforgiving, but that's okay! I love the art direction in these new "retro" games. It just draws me in! I think I'm going to grab Chained Echoes next time I see it on sale.
@@EvilAngel4116 As long as the main quest/story is good, that's fine with me. I don't want my RPGs to be too long anymore since I have limited time to play. It looks beautiful though and I can't wait to play it!
@zackw3887 if you've ever enjoyed RPGs you will enjoy it. The characters and story are just a bit too heavily inspired by FFT and Xenogears but the combat and game itself are top-notch
So glad I backed this on kickstarter when it dropped in 2020.
Fell in love with this game from its demo. The artwork is so beautiful. You could have just shown the title of thos video and had the audio going "Yeeeeeeeeeeessss" for 13mins and that would have summed it up.
Thanks for the review !
I was almost sold on with the demo I played a while ago, and totally forgot when this was scheduled for release. I was afraid the game would be short, or repetitive as it's usually hard to avoid one or the other. So glad it's not the case, I love turn based RPG and pixel art, I finished Octopath 2 and was wondering when would be my next great adventure ! 😃
I LOVED The Messenger. When I saw this, I immediately thought of Chrono Trigger and downloaded the demo. My 10-yr-old son is most of the way through Monster Sanctuary and has really enjoyed learning how to use the various systems to get through the game. It was kind of his intro into the turn-based party style JRPG.
We both played the demo and he’s looking forward to Sea of Stars. I really wish Squeenix would get on it and offer up Chrono Trigger on Switch already, because I think he’d love that and gain an appreciation for how these games got to where they are.
the art style is amazing. hoping i can pick the game up some time soon
I enjoyed the Messenger quite a bit, but I love jrpgs so seeing this was a pleasant surprise. Cant wait to play this when it releases!
This is an art-style I wouldn't call "retro".
It certainly isn't something that would run on the old NES and SNES systems- heck, maybe even something like a PS1 would have trouble with this many high fidelity sprites- and it's not even going out of its way to visually emulate them with a few modern caveats, like Shovel Knight, and even The Messenger itself did.
It's still a gorgeous looking game, but just because it's pixel-art, I wouldn't say it's retro. Modern pixel art is quite amazing nonetheless.
Well, it's artstyle isn't retro, but the gameplay systems probably are: it's still a turn based RPG based on Chrono Trigger after all.
Downloading it asap Tomorrow… loved the demo. But why they are waiting till 2024 for physical release makes little sense. It would be real nice if it has a booklet too they’ve made all this effort with this Game so far so it wouldn’t be out the question for them to go that extra step for the fans! It will definetly be appreciated by the fans, new and old.
I'm hoping the wait means updates and fixes will be on the cart.
Buy pc and play the game smh.
@@roz1281that's exactly the reason. They already mentioned this
@@Jahidhasan-dv1xt gonna get it on steam to play with reshade but I do want the switch cart
It's not the studio's fault for the physical release being so far out. It's being outsourced to another company and I imagine there's many things we're not seeing on the consumer side that makes doing this as an independent studio much more difficult than we'll ever realize
Been excited for this game since its reveal. Glad to hear it holds up.
This the best modern pixel art game I've seen! Absolutely gorgeous, can't wait for the physical release early next year to support the studio
A Felix video upload day is always a good day. I'm so excited for Sea of Stars. I have it pre-installed on my Xbox (playing it via game pass) so I'm ready to play it as soon as possible lol
Now I can’t wait to see what this team does next. So far it’s been 10/10 games. The messenger isn’t even the type of genre i usually like, but it was just so well done it was impossible not to be hooked. So far I’m 12hrs into this, plan to sink another 10hrs tonight. Don’t even bother with the demo just get it
This may not be for me but it looks amazing! Felix I’d love to hear your thoughts on the game itself when ya review them but y’all never fail to convince me on what I should go for or not!
That's the thing, we got a review and opinion, which wasn't written by NL? It often confuses me.
I’d rather listen to Britney Spears than this guy. 🤣
@@sparkypack the review is written by Nintendo life, they just adapt it to video so if you want, you have the option to either read the full review or listen to the video. What I meant was that usually Zion and Alex at the very end give their specific thoughts which I enjoy, because it’s like I’m getting more insight on the game.
Thank you for the complete, professional and interesting review. I've been waiting for this game for almost a year and now that I know it's awesome I'm even more excited😍🥰
Just played this game a few months back. Played the whole thing as it was on PS Plus for ages. Recently saw it had a week left on the service, so I just bought the game for switch! I can't bare to lose it, I loved it that much!
Ive been wanting this game since it came out but i told myself i would wait for the physical version to come to the states so ill be pre ordering it from best buy when i get paid so that i can play it in may
This year is crazy with the amount of solid games being released!! I can't wait to play this on PlayStation Plus
12:33 "Jirard the Constructionist" 😂😂😂
This looks absolutely stunning! But do you think someone like me, who requires lots of totk video guides to complete quests, would be able to play this? Since this is not super well known I might get stuck and not have any guide online on how to complete levels/quests/bosses
This will definitely generate enough buzz to get a dedicated walkthrough on at least one site, so I wouldn’t be worried about that! Though it may not be in video format 🙃
2:56 I think i took a HUGE spoiler by looking at the band.......
I'm currently 4hrs in, I've never played a turned based rpg other than pokemon and just gotta say I'm having a blast with this game, playing on ps5 cos it's free with ps plus extra and I've had it on my radar and it hasn't disappointed. Love it
I'm blown away, this is some of the best pixel and sprite I have seen. Sea of Stars is absolutely mind blowing
Final fantasy 7 and octopath traveller in my books have a serious contender ....what a genuinely amazing game. I tried it on PlayStation premium and was totally wowed with it ! Definitely a physical copy game
cannot wait for this beauty to come out! Spoke about it last week on he podcast as it was easily my favourite demo I played during ID@Xbox DemoFest and is just a beautiful standout in a sometimes crowed JRPG genre. Great job Nintendo Life!
Wholly agree with the graphics looking better than Square's HD2D. This game's art is just pristine
Idk, Octopath II specifically looks much better to me but this would easily be the next best thing.
i hadnt heard about this one but it looks fantastic. Id love to get a Golden Sun remaster in this style
The one thing I dont know how to feel about thats keeping me from picking this up is the leveling system. Kinda worried it results in homogenzied grinding. Part of the fun of RPGs where characters level up individually is that you never know when one of them will learn a new skill or something. Plus it adds the element of strategy by keeping the character alive at the end of tough fights to ensure they don't miss out on XP. Even games with few party member options like Mario and Luigi do this.
The bench issue is resolved by usable inventory XP or stat granting items like the XP candies in recent pokemon games, or just new party members joining at the party's average level and then continuing to earn XP in resrerve, albeit usually less.
I'm right at the end of the game and never once had to grind. If you just fight all of the enemies in each area as you go through it the first time you'll end up at a correct level for the part of the game you're in. Not having to worry about underleveled characters made it so I didn't have to manage that aspect and encouraged me to use every party member to the fullest because there were no level-based consequences for swapping them in.
How long is the campaign?
~30 hours
12:08 A correct use of the word retro!
Hurray!
You are a good teacher!
This games demo on Steam screamed "DO. NOT. SKIP." at me. I am a sucker for high quality retro JRPGs and so many modern or modern-retro titles dont click with me. This however oozes so much of that sweet game essence I crave, its unbelievable to me
Unfortunately I have too many games on the go to pick this up.
That battle system sounds kind of genius though
I've played Eastward which was also stunningly beautiful if it comes to graphics. However, that game had so much unnecessary dialogs that it killed the joy of playing it. Hopefully, this game has a good plot and it's addictive enough to keep me playing it. We will see tomorrow my fellow gamers!
Same! I stopped playing Eastward halfway through because of how much blabbering dialogue it had! It literally killed the experience for me
I’ve been excited for this game since it was revealed all those years ago. Even more so when they said it was made by the same people behind The Messenger. It’s also really cool that it’s free on PS5 and Xbox. Even though I would probably play it the most on Switch
Once you finally get the ins and out of Wheels figured out, it’s one of the funnest mini games I’ve ever played in a video game!
just watched the 3 min escapist review, wow. I think I'll just thumbs up this and watch it later, I'm so pumped for this now!
This review convinced me to grab SoS-looks fantastic!
It looks amazing except for some reason I find the in game menu font to be annoying. I hope they give an option to change it
A comment about the narrative style of reviews where the speaker is reading a text written by someone else: I find the way the speaker reads to be very distracting because he doesn't give the impression of having played the game and instead is a news reporter, reporting on someone else's opinion. The style of reading where the sentence start with an upward inflection and then concludes with a slowdown, on every single sentence! I would suggest that the reviews are given a bit more candidly by the person who played the game and wrote the review. Just my two cents.
I will be playing it on xbox and I got a feeling it will surprise me more than starfield, hope I am wrong
I’m a wait for this one. Not because it’s bad, but because I know for a fact it’s probably gonna get a physical release some time down the line
As a huge fan of chrono trigger I may have to give this a shot even acknowledging it is clearly a very different game in its own right!
the pixels and sprites are so beautiful!
The screenshot at 1:48 reminds me so much of Golden Sun, holy cow.
Honestly the "awkward pacing" you described sounds like the Sage Joch quest in Secret of Mana.
My issue with the game on all platforms is the way the world moves as you move. It’s jittery and gives me a headache. I’ve seen This happen in many top down pixel art games and I don’t know what to call it. It’s on pc, ps5, and switch. It’s the one things topping me from playing it.
An example of a gem that doesn’t have this issue I think would be terraria.
I guess this style of RPG just isn't for me, looks great though
I downloaded the demo but only played 5 mins of it cuz i wanted to go in as blind as possible on the story.
Just downloaded the demo. Looks great.
Can't wait! Backed this game since 2020, and it's finally here.
I want this game so much but don't have the tme for it right now considering I'll be playing Starfield on Thursday night.
I hate reviews that spoil the fact there is a twist. Sure you haven't told us what it is, but it lessens the surprise and most twists are designed to be surprises.
Looking forward for this game😁thanks Felix😎
Played the demo and really enjoyed it, really charming and def picking it up
Valere name pronunciation is like Val-air. It's not Valerie ahah.
12:34 wow, Jirard [the Completionist] got a cameo!
I'm considering it but I haven't even finished Chained Echoes yet! I have heard there's some odd grammar & punctuation in English but otherwise it sounds great.
I'm gonna get this when the Switch physical comes out but I'll be playing it on Game Pass tomorrow!
I tried the demo and it was ok, didn’t quite hook me…
However, as a french canadian, the quebec language filter was probably the funniest most fun experience ive had in a demo haha
This game is gorgeous and plays like a dream.
Really want a physical release of this
Absolutely amazing pixel graphics. Can't wait for the physical to be released.
I didn't know that the dev studio is from Québec. I'm definitely gonna try it out
I'm slightly confused about giving it a 9/10. In the leadup to the conclusion, I was fully expecting a 10/10, or at least a 9.5/10. I really don't see how some minor pacing issues are enough to take a full point off the score...
Great review dude. And from what I've heard, this game is amazing. Also, Rise of the Third Power did the whole party levels up as a unit thing last year. Underrated masterpiece that game is. Doesn't get enough credit.
I am so excited to play this game. Unfortunately I’ll have to wait a bit. I’m still playing Baldurs Gate 3 and then Starfield.
I'm so stoked for this game, but I am waiting for the physical release.
I'm not big into JRPGs but I have this on my future play list. Visuals and music seem stunning.
Oh, and no room for Felix's personal thoughts? :( Ok..
This game is absolutely gorgeous to both play and look at and it deserves far more recognition!
The music in this is just too good, it even inspired some of my recent music on my YT channel. I can't wait to play it!
If anybody is sensitive to spoilers it seems like they show a lot of stuff in the footage. I stopped watching (but kept listening) halfway through but i kind of wish i hadn't seen a lot of it.
Seems neat but I've gotten burnt out on JRPGs and I'm playing Baldur's Gate 3 which kinda lets me do whatever. I doubt this game is gonna let me stack up bombs, lure people over by playing a song, turn on turn based mode which freezes them in place, walk away and then light the bombs up.
I will definitely play it but on PS5 cause will be free via my subscription as it will on xbox.
It's shame that many games if you want to play them on Switch have to pay a hell lot of$€£ when on other platforms are free and on steam are always cheaper with many ways to get them.
I love my Switch but the cost for the games is unbelievable high :(
I had high hopes for Chained Echoes and while it was a fine game it wasn’t great. I’m hoping this one is great.
Can't wait to play this tomorrow!
im so hyped for the game! Great video Felix!
I'll never understand why modern RPGs generally haven't gone down the route of time based combat, it literally makes the games way more engaging and it's such a simple addition.
Mario RPG was my first RPG, I played RPGs for years thinking they had timing based combat, only to be disappointed going back when I was older to find out that they didn't.
Such a simple solution for a pretty common problem with jrpgs
Torn between waiting for the physical copy next year or double dipping with the digital now. The review stating "to play as soon as you reasonable can" definitely persuades me.
It must be done
I can't wait to play this SNES-style JRPG by Sabotage Studios! Just need to clear my backlog and wait for a sale 🤩🤩
If any of yall are saying this should have Action RPG combat, you really don't understand what this game is about. Turn-based combat is a staple of JRPGs and it isn't going anywhere.
Not only that but this is not your traditional turn-based combat and is very much like "turn based combat for people who like action RPGs"
If anyone has any idea when the physical edition will be released PLS let me know!
i just finished chained echoes yesterday, so i'll take some days off before starting with this.
I've already preordered this and im ready to play it tom! Will there be any kind of local coop on this? I seem to be getting mixed info online. I was hoping to play this w my wife hehe
I played the demo and found the writing to be stilted and the battles to be tedious, especially in comparison to classic square stuff. do the battles improve?
Just got past the intro finally, slow start indeed but enjoyable. Can't wait to keep playing.
That being said, I know this is a Nintendo channel but it's free on PS5 if you have PS+
