Sold mine just as the cam tensioners started to rattle on startup so depending on what was done in the rebuild (thinking carbon buildup as another issue with these) it should be a safe buy on an otherwise reliable engine?
Fun fact for you…my mate owned this actual car around 15,000 miles, I’d guess 2009 ish. Been in it myself. He was underwhelmed with performance and fuel economy and sold it after a year or so I think….
Yep my old motor. Best MPG I ever got in it was 24mpg on a long run back from your place Ross :-) Think I averaged 17mpg ish... which wasn't worth it for the lack of excitement.... lovely engine noise though.
Love a four seat V8 soft top myself. Looked at S4 and S5 and found that changing the timing chain is an engine out job. So I went for a Merc instead. FWIW my view is that Merc are the best at V8s as they've done them since the 60s. For Audi's the 5 pot is the signature power plant, and for BMWs it's the straight six.
The thing about the Audi's especially around those years is even the top one looks like a diesel s line. And if its only getting 25-30mpg and not giving you the fizz then probably best to get something else
I had a normal A4 Cab for 8 years. It was my only car so was used all year round, rain or shine, sun and snow. Had it not been wiped out by a truck on the M1 I think I would still have it now, comfortable, quiet, good looking and classy especially when compared to the ‘look at meeeeee’ Audis of today.

I feel the lack of speed is just the way the speed is delivered. When I'm in my friend's rs or golf r, I feel like I'm going fast due to the torque and way the turbo pulls. Yet in my s4 it doesn't feel fast but yet there's barely any difference when we race. Although you do also have the advantage of quattro. Which you won't regret come winter, or taking a corner hard.
My dad had one of these, but auto. Sprint blue over white. Such a beautiful car that we enjoyed for 7+ years. Definitely no sports car, but a great cruiser with a nice sound, and you can fit your friends.

Its an EXCELLENT choice!! me and my best mate were looking at getting one of these about a year or so ago for £3500/£4000 at the time and we almost went for it only due to unforseen probelms we couldnt, but that 4.2 v8 is unreal and the interior is pretty decenty for age too :)
Firstly there’s nothing more annoying than when they come with you on a test drive! Secondly, if he’s got about 7k to spend I’d pick up a BMW 6 series. Beautiful to drive, quick, interior is still similar to the new ones and not the worst on fuel.
Usually trade insurance policies do not cover test drives,unless accompanied by a member of selling dealers staff,I have lost cars like that in past either crashed by idiot punter or just taken and joy ridden.
Understandable but you can usually get an idea about someone. If they leave valid ID & look like they’re actually interested then for me i would. I get what your saying but I’ll be personally put off from buying one with someone in the back.
If he's going from a Z4 and wants to stay sporty, why not try an Audi TTS roadster or coupe? Plenty to be had sub-10k and the TFSI engine can be remapped for a couple of hundred quid to give it even more poke. Good running costs too which seems important to your Dad.
I had the 2.0TFSI for 3 years. Loved it to death. S4 is great, but it will need £'s to maintain. Engine on that is bomb proof and as it's a manual then no auto failure worries. Roof needs maintaining or you will be forever having opening/closing issues. A good mod is an auto roof open off the fob. Easy to fit too. Make sure you clean the fabric roof and seal it to repel water.
I had a 54 plate before the kids came along,lovely car, storm developments put a miltech exhaust on for me, sounded beautiful after that! Average of 16 to the gallon with all types of driving, lovely car miss it, but oh if the timing tensioners go😩 3-5k so sold it!
Having owned a lot of turbo-charged cars, I've found that when you go to (albeit high powered) normally aspirated car, there is a certain feeling of it being underwhelming. I think it's just do with the way the power deliver is on any turbo vs a NA. My friend changed from a Golf R (300hp, 2.0 Turbo) to a S4 with the same engine as the one you saw here (but not a convertible) and, despite the higher power, it definitely lacked in exhiliration when accelerating, compared to the turbo powered Golf R.
I had the s4 saloon the speed is there just you don’t realise have it mapped it does give you a massive gain but the response it much better. I averaged 27/28 mpg on a run
Liked your reasoning both had sound points. Cars I thought doubt need "running in" these days? Running in was required because tooling equipment was rubbish basically but we have come a long way since then. If it needed running in why have the dealers not done so?
Well, there's no instant love and an engine that big in this era would just be too expensive. I think, just keep looking. People always feel obligated to buy something they tested, but I think when you buy your daily driver, you should be a bit picky.
Personally I feel like your old man wasn’t impressed or wowed enough by it…just feel for 7k you can get some nice cars so might be worth waiting for something that you just instantly want to buy after the test drive
These s4 Audi's sound nice but are slow, heavy and thirsty. The 335i n54 is the way better drivers car and plenty of tuning potential on the table once you get bored
The S4 is a fast tourer, not a sportscar. It will bring you fast from A to B in ease and comfort. Maybe a roadster is better as long as you dont need rearseats. Maybe a Boxster, SLK or XK is more suited for your dad.
Had a few of these s4’s… good cars but the 4wd becomes a bit boring but they do sound better with a miltek I have gone back to the e39 540 which in my opinion sounds better and is a better looking car, although they are both chains the bmw isn’t as scary to fox as the Audi
i reckon you should get your dad to buy it and then straight pipe it if he's got the cash for it. a bit more power and a bit more noise is needed with that car but other than that its a cracking car.
The Cayenne is one of the ugliest pigs to ever wear 4 wheels, not in the same league as the cars they’re considering. A decent condition SL probably a bit out of the price range, without going for one with “issues”

You should look at/test drive a Jaguar XF or XJ (V8 of course). You wont be disappointed with the sound in those!

Check if timing chain guides / tensioners have any excess rattles: This is one of the major costs / maintenance items on these engines
Don't think that'll be an issue, as he says in the video that this car has already had a full engine rebuild.
Loved my 2004 s4 cab in sprint blue. Milteck exhaust brings them to live and growl.

Have you checked out the CLK's? You should be able to get a 500 convertibles in your price range.
Yeah - CLK with M113 4.3, 5.0 or 5.5 is the way to go. The late gen 2 CLKs are badged 500, but have the 383bhp 5.5.
This was on my list, but I ended up buying a 2009 Jag XK convertible !

M113K - the 5.5 but with supercharger! If only they put that in the CLK instead of the AMG M156. Only two seats in an SLK though.
