After working 3 months on an oil rig in Malaysia flying back to the UK around the time this was released it just resonated as one great song, totally minimal greatnessIt was Singapore Airlines I must thank for introducing me to a song that will stay as one of my fav. ever for life and I mean that.

Guy was a 17 year old bike messenger who worked for the record company Elton was signed to at the time. The story goes, that Elton had a dream about his own death and while absorbed in the melancholy of that thought came up with this song. He later found out that Guy had been killed in a motorbike accident on the same day. A tragic tale.

Elton John said this in the sleeve notes of the 7" single: "...As I was writing this song one Sunday, I imagined myself floating into space and looking down at my own body. I was imagining myself dying. Morbidly obsessed with these thoughts, I wrote this song about death. The next day I was told that Guy (Burchett), our 17 year-old messenger boy, had been tragically killed on his motorcycle the day before. Guy died on the day I wrote this song."
I remember this whole event at that time. It is particularly poignant for me because at about the same time I had a young mechanic working for me in a motorcycle dealership in London who was killed at around the same time on his motorcycle. About the same age too. Listening to this beautiful music brought it all back tonight. Such tragic losses in both cases. Thank you for the music Elton and thank you sydlivy for posting.

+Cheryl O'Kane Actually, it's not. It was written by Elton about his own thoughts/feelings and he found out the day after it's writing that the young messenger was killed. It obviously clicked with him, and that is why this song was named for the young man.
