  • This week we look at and discuss one of camping's simple luxuries, the reflector oven! Simplistic yet immensely useful in a camp that bakes fresh bread, cookies, cakes, and more! You will get to look at one that breaks down with ease and we read from an advertisement from Abercrombie and Fitch from 1900!

For horse camping it’d be alright to bring along. I’d like to get one eventually.

I made my first baker in high school metal shop in the late seventies, using plans from Boy’s Life Magazine. It was a huge hit on canoe trips and overnight camping trips. Brownies and cookies (using pre-made dough from a sausage-like tube) were very popular.

Nothing brings the troop round' like something freshly baked for cracker barrel! ☺️

That’s a brilliant design! I’ve made reflector ovens from disposable tinfoil pans and binder clips to bake brownies, which are always well received. I wonder how much difference a solid shelf makes versus a rack (which is what I use).

While baking , you have to turn the item 180 degrees when half way thru the baking .
During my research on reflector ovens I found referance to a drawing made in the 1400's of roasting some meat on a " dangle" in front of a reflector oven .
The picture I had seen before many times ... when you see it you will probably realize that you have seen it too in many books about camp cooking.

I use to have the pattern for making this as well as a couple more. Okay for a weight that doesn't trip but then you could take a dutch oven or my favorite a Coleman oven which does require a two burner stove. Base camp setups or canoe trips are fine. Then again the old Scout two wheel cart did as well. Townsends has one for the hearth I believe.

I bought one of these for canoe camping. I agree you have to be really dedicated to this item backpacking. I didn't Amber Combri and Fitch made this type of gear. We are talking about the clothing line that is worn by teens and early twenties, right?

look like a very compact to carry oven.i have a very high end one that the maker stamped a number on.only used on car camps because it's too heavy for canoe trips.
