I spent last weekend bear hunting in the mountains of S.W. Washington. A storm hit during the night, wave after wave of rain, wind, and HUMID cold off the ocean. I just had a spike camp but, I have a 90% wool blanket made into a chest high footwell with horse blanket pins. Over my core went two 90% wool blankets that my daughter had sewed together for me. Nothing, but nothing, beats humid, driving cold like wool. Heavy? Oh, yes but, a life savor and sleep savor.

Made a discovery while elk hunting in the mountains. If you take a large cotton or canvas game bag it makes a good mattress when packed full of pine needles and leaves. They are cheap. Even cheaper if you wait till after hunting season.

The local Goodwill store can fill the bill on obtaining at a reasonable price. Cook gear, sleep system, clothing, just go check it out. You can refine your gear as you go along.

I'll disagree on the tent selection. The prices of the available WW1 & WW2 reproduction pup tents is comparable to those being asked for Viet Nam vintage pups. Under the "Buy Once, Cry Once" philosophy, the more authentic tent is more economical because at some point, you're going to want to replace that 1970s-80s tent for one that all your buds are using. Air mattresses can be covered with blankets. A wool blanket is a wool blanket, a Nalgene bottle can be put in a pack. But a tent---that's the center of your camp.
I'll also mention some exciting things are coming on the sleep-system/shelter system fronts for Classic Camping. Stand by, its stuff that everybody interested will need to know about.

Thanks so much for giving me a baseline. I am coming from the Ultralight world. I have always enjoyed history and antiques. Therefore, the craft is the perfect transition for me.

Good points and gear. Lanterns are available at a lot of places as well as garage sales. You can set up a canvas tarp. harbor freight has an 8x10 for under 50. I mean a tarp not drop cloth. If you have a yard start by setting up there or a close park where you are not far from your car. If you are doing this with a lady you want to keep going with then add some extras to make her comfortable. If you want to wait til next year to allow time to get gear, try one of those town wide or long drive garage sales where they go for several miles. Make offers. Still try close to where you can bail out if you are not doing well. Probably the most needed thing to this activity is to learn to sew. It wasn't easy for any of us and we didn't have videos to learn from. Like Sarge says it don't have to be beutiful just function for you. Used old sewing machines are not expensive.

I had to do classic camp I had 2wool blankets ,10x10 tarp 2,50ft ropes , swiss knife ,machete and small ax. And a pelet rifle. U used the rope with a blanket to make a hammock when it would rain. I survived.

thoroughly flushed out large Gatorade type bottles wide mouth easy filling, the bulk containers of modern gum, plastic screw top 'jar' type containers suitable for coffee, sugar etc, here's a slightly strange one, make your own match safe ? ask around family and friends do any of them use effervescent tablets, vitamin C, denture cleaning, they all come in airtight watertight tubes use only limited by imagination

Aluminum is carcinogenic, toxic. Also, some vintage military gear could contain hazardous chemicals - fire retardants and waterproofing materials as well.
