Let's Light a 100 Year Old Camp Stove: Primus 100!
Thanks. The grill rost and baking "dutch" oven are usefull extras! Did this inspired cylindric Stanley 1 person cooking sets?
I have one of frist XLs . Really like the up grades of the additional zipper and strap adjuster. I have to upgrade
I would have like to see you use the items, not use talk about them.
7:41 next video: using Mason jars and twine to access natures fridge: the creek. It cracks me up that fellow backpackers ask “HOW did you get cold Cokes up here?” My secret? A couple synthetic mesh poke sacks, some bank line and a rock. Bring along a couple well sealing Tupperware containers and you’re eating crisp salad, cold condiments and scrambling fresh eggs. There’s a trick for leaving every type of bag of Mountain House crap where it belongs: on the store shelf. After slogging up a mountain all day you deserve fresh, real food
6:29 there’s ice and then there’s ICE. For years I thought that once water was frozen that was that. Not so. Ask anyone who has worked as a Hawaiian shaved ice vendor. Man I HATED making shaved ice. And back when I had to make them we had machines that spun blocks of ice over a blade. We packed the “ice snow” by hand into paper cones. Then poured god-awful flavored syrups on top. Anyhow when the ice first came out of the industrial freezers in the mornings it was so rock hard the blocks would fly over the blades and cleave nothing into the cones. Zero. Those blocks of ice were the size of Cool Whip bowls. Frozen to a hard, cloudy white, impenetrable steel. It required minimum 45 minutes before a block would shave even slightly. Ideally 120 minutes sitting on a concrete floor would make the best blocks for shaving. On a hot day with zero insulation it required 4-6 hours to melt a block to water. With sawdust one would have lasted until sundown. When I see people shaving an ice block with a scraper in old movies? I always think “serves you right; you should have been a bank robber”
That was interesting thanks
You paid for a water “purifier”. Might as well say it and get creds for your good sense. Good vid. Thanks!
Great video
Do you have the pattern for the pack
Great job!
There is one thing that my Grandfather taught me about keeping cold water on the tractor in the summertime and that was he had a gallon glass jug wrapped in what was like a quilt wit a canvas cover . He would fill it in the morning with cold water and would soak the cover well , and told me to stop and soak the cover every few hours . Later that day I got thirsty and took a drink of water that was probably 42F ... it was as cold as the water straight from the well . Later he explained that he learned it from his father in the 1920's . I use quilted covers on my single wall ss water bottles when I camp and in the winter keep the cover dry and fill with hot water especially just before bed to use to warm my blankets and have some water not frozen in the morning.
Those are interesting and information is scarce although the Smithsonian has an aritcle. I should add it would be fun to make from a picnic basket.
That's where the term icebox came from
Mr. Dyer, Thanks for talking about Grandpa's secret to keeping things hot and or cold. Very Interesting and Happy Trails at your Squirrel Camp!
I always wondered what the point of using a picnic basket for picnics was since a backpack seemed more practical. It turns out the modern replica baskets aren't insulated like the old ones and like a cooler is. Pretty neat.
I am a modern guy, love polar fleece for a mid layer and when it get down to the low 40’s , I throw on a toboggan and I’m good for another 10°.
I just ordered a safari and this video will help me out tremendously! This was one of the best instructional videos that shows everything you need to know hands on , i appreciate the time and effort you put into this video . Thanx
You are welcome, I am really glad it was useful! I hope you enjoy your Haven as much as I enjoy mine!
this was an awesome early mess kit !!! Amazing !!! as close to perfect from way back then !!! $5,000 back in the day was NICE fortune....I'm so glad the mess kit was sold to the public and Scouting at a GOOD fair price for those days....Bless our brilliant inventors !!!!!
It is a compact kit but the pot and cup are not as usable as I would like. They sold quite a few!
I like your honing kit, I might just do that for myself for basic blade maintenance.
It works pretty darn well. The compound is a bit hard to get out.
Thank you for showing us the Stopple/Upton Kook Set! James Bender ( Way Point Survival ) describes how to make one, with easy to find materials.
No problem and he did a fantastic job!
Its to me situational ive always walked out on my porch and dressed accordingly . Had a littel extra roled up in my day pack in the car
You're right! Ultimately the situation dictates it and experience will make it second nature.
I'm old and don't get around very well , and I miss going to the backwoods . What would be the best gear for me for over Knight hikes ?
For overnight hikes, based on how you are describing your situation, lighter the better and probably not classic gear, it will be heavier than modern materials. Get some cheap dry bags from Walmart or get ziplock bags to keep you gear dry and organized, a basic pack that fits your needs, a fleece blanket for warm weather, I adore my Haven XL hammock tent because I like being off the ground and sleeping on my side but a hammock isn't for everyone. If you take a tent, take a mattress. Always take 3-4 pairs of hiking socks even if it is overnight to change out throughout your hike in and out. I love the Grayl water purifier, it takes care of the clean water issue and is foolproof. Take at least a gallon of water with you. Wear good boots, take a hat, first aid kit and medicines. Don't forget about the moleskin for blisters and sleep aids/ear plugs if you need them. Take foods that don't need refrigerated and can cook up easy. Map, compass, Whistle, lighter, matches, tinder/fire starters or a backpacking stove with fuel. Take a buddy, avoid camping or hiking alone. Tell loved ones where you are going and when to expect you to return. Share with them your hiking and camping plan. Check for water sources along your trail, and test out every bit of gear at home before you leave, including preparing your food so you know how to make it. Take a little extra food such as calorie bars and sugar food to give you the extra energy if you need it. Drink mixes are also a great thing to take.
Im in South Texas...its 90 degrees at night and 100 in the day. We also have near 100% humidity. I wish it was colder.
Yeah, I don't envy you but Texas is a pretty state!
This kind of old-style gousset/pocket compass is such a long way from a more recent baseplate compass... No direction arrow, no rotating bezel, no doghouse, no baseplate, and it seems the needle will take forever to settle... But, thanks to show anyway how to actually take advantage of them. Thanks to your quick example, I can think of ways to implement the main baseplate-compass use-cases with such an old compass : calculating a bearing on the map towards a destination, marching following this bearing, and even triangulating (taking bearings towards several remarkable points to determine current position). You will need a protractor and a ruler though. And yes, looks like its definitely less forgiving, because you need to remember the bearing when you march (no doghouse to "record" that on this compass and no easy "always needle in the shed" while you walk), and taking a bearing with only the compass lid as a viewfinder, you'll have to do (basic) math to calculate the bearing = the angle between the lid plane and the north arrow. I guess I'll have to buy one of these old scouts compass and try navigating with it. I'm sure I'll love my baseplate even more after that, but that would be a lovely side-challenge during a hike.
It's really different and having a map with a clear understanding of topography and noting natural or man-made boundaries goes a long way to using them and being safe. In Ohio country and the Eastern woodlands it is not so bad. I would be in real trouble in the plains or desert.
Thanks. Good video. Here in Namibia for the largest part of the country or winters work like this. At night it may go down close to 0 degrees Celsius, or under. By lunch time you are most days stripped down to a longsleeve shirt, or even your t shirt. I work outside most of the time, so I have worked out my system as follow. T shirt, long sleeve shirt, wool army jersey, sleevless jacket or light jacket and then a heavy coat. My heavy coat has for some years now been a German military jacket. It is canvas with a wool liner that can be removed. With that goes a wool cap, gloves and wool socks. My legs I dont mind the cold. As the day progresses layers come off, as evening comes closer they go back on.
Solid system friend! Those temperature swings are crazy!
Mr. Dyer Thanks for the video about clothing and layering. Keep up the great work and Be Safe!
Thanks, you too!
Well done! This guy that made his trapper Nelson pack a sounds like a real class act!
Thanks bigfoot!
I was sure you were saying Woolrich, are those vintage shirts ? I Googled Woolrich and got a modern company that charges extortionate prices for clothing apparently aimed at the young
Yeah, sadly Woolrich has lost it's way. It was premium outdoor gear from Pennsylvania until about 10 years ago. They sold out like Abercrombie and Fitch.
Good ideas. This is the weather old timers wore sweaters. Longjohn shirt wool shirt and a sweater. A vest was like your shirt in always wearing one. It has to be in the 20's before I go for a insulated vest because I work in one. That's good to zero if I am moving around. This fall weather with rain I prefer waxed canvas or really any water proof you have. Wool is better than cotton in the rain but I prefer not to let my upper body get wet this time of the year. The only thing worse is wet snow.
Solid advice that goes with experience! 👌 I need to get some period canvas outerwear for my use, Duxbak has had my interest for awhile now.
I recently acquired a boy scout mess kit (the cooking pot, lid, & skillet) 1950-1960. Wondering if it is safe to use? How would one find out? Are the materials it is made from safe along with the amount of time that has passed? I really want to use them, but I am unsure how safe it would be. Please advise.
Many people would say no due the carcinogenic factors of aluminum. You will need to determine the risk value for yourself. I use them and believe my minimal and intermittent use does little if any harm on myself.
Walther P38 pistol and P51 Mustang fighter plane. P38 Walther was made of stamped metal henceforth the name P38.
Thank you, I never knew that! I appreciate you sharing it for us!
Enjoy your work. 73 had a few health problems don't get around much anymore. Do lay in my own firewood. I am curious what pants are you using or do you recommend? Keep up the good work! Brings back some times I enjoy in my youth. Love canvas!
For historic wear I love the comfort, durability, and movement of breeches. I own a pair of cavalry ones from What Price Glory that I sewed some buttons on for braces even though they have belt loops. The historic Scout ones I own have both and you should wear them around the navel or natural waist. For modern camping I found at Walmart Wrangler cargo pants that resemble the material of the old US Air Force BDU's of the 90's/early 2000's. Lightweight and durable although I wear a size larger than normal because the legs are cut weird. Hope all is well my friend!
Thank you for making the effort to reply. It is appreciated
Also in Ohio. Today is 88 degrees!
Hey, we finally got some rain! I don't recall the last time there was a forest fire in Ohio, Hocking county forest caught fire over the weekend.
Depends what you are doing. I like pure wool because of its versatility but I can get away with only two layers unless it is really cold. This evening I was wearing a lightweight wool pullover under a thick Swedish Army surplus jacket and moleskin trousers. I have various options, sometimes it is a merino T sometimes a pendleton shirt, sometimes a wooly pully of various thicknesses. I like your cap BTW I recently got a new one, Welsh wool woven in Wales, like my previous one. Some of my clothes are genuine vintage and some are just timeless.
That works well my friend!
What material is the over shirt made of? Also love the channel and content, thank you for continuing to put out quality info
Thanks! It is 100% wool. Not worsted wool or flannel. An undershirt is advised. It will get softer with use but will not get as soft as flannel.
First of your videos I've seen. 2:57 into a 14 minute video is a looong lead-up to your subject. Prior to this point you've told me that you've shown a lot of mess kits on your channel. That's not relevant or interesting. You've told me that you won't say one is better than the other because you believe in choosing the right tool for the job. Uh, okay. You've also told me which of the previous kits you've shown is your favorite and it's not the subject of this video. At this point, you've nearly convinced me to not bother watching the rest of the video. That can't possibly have been the reason for that intro.
I bought a CampCraft made Milbank bag for my Grayl. They are sized to hold the bottle and are available on Etsy.
Thanks for the tip friend!
Sent mine back after 4 days of just 40° degrees froze my butt off in that thing and it wasn't comfortable at all . I ended up ordering a double layer warbonnet ridgerunner hammock. Ridgerunner is super comfortable, and you can lay flatter than the haven ,sleep on your side ,and ya Don't have to lay 2 feet off the ground. Definitely not upset over my purchase.
Dude that sucks! I haven't had any issues with mine, I like the height but it is a bit noisy. The insulated cover helps quite a bit when I use it.
Dave Canterbury hinted around at possibly reproducing a stainless steel BSA style messkit in 2025. I'm surprised nobody has made a better version of this kit yet. I'm hoping to see one with a carbon steel skillet sometime in the future.
That would be cool! I can't wait for Dave's carbon steel folding handle skillet
What is your opinion on using old vintage canteens? I have and old WW1 canteen. It is of European origin. It is my favorite canteen. I use it all the time. I had someone tell me that it may be leaching aluminum or lead into my water. I had never thought about that.
If there is a soldered seam you can pretty much guarantee it is lead solder. Aluminum is now known to be mildly carcinogenic. I never use anything I suspect of lead solder, aluminum I am a bit more tolerant of. You can get reproduction WWI canteens from What Price Glory but you will still need to wrestle with the carcinogenic aspect. Delve into the most up to date studies and research to make your judgement.
@@honorableoutfitters thank you for taking the time to give your thoughts.
I wonder if we have those avent up here in Canada
If nothing else you can start your own and if you need help and guidance join the Campcrafter's Guild, we will support and help you! Www.honorableoutfitters.com/jointheguild
I remember as kid back the 1970s camping and sleeping in a canvas tent and makeing shelters and cooking over a opened fire and carvaing stuff out of wood and in elementary school we would sleep in canvas tents and make shelter and cooking over opened fire and making stuff out of wood . They need to bring this back into schools again
Man that would be awesome! I'd gladly give up my indoor classroom for an outdoor one!
bushcraft to me is just more nature based camping/outdoors skills, using minimal premade tools, making your own tools, building fires with natural resources, cooking on the fire, its more about skills then tools overall. i hesitate to allow the gatekeeping to creep in, if you want to make your fire with a modern knife, scraping fatwood, and hitting it with a spark instead of just crumpling up a wad of papers and lighter fluid under a pile of precut plastic wrapped tinder youre practicing skills. ive camped at almost every level of technology and currently use a healthy mix of skill based low tech stuff before sleeping on a modern air mattress because im just not gonna sleep on the dirt on a wool blanket and pretend thats the only way to do it unless its an actual emergency and im lost in the woods away from my camp.
I think Dave Canterbury did a great job articulating bushcrafting in his response video. It is about skills with few tools and survival.
Where do you go to get state park maps? I live in Parma, Ohio.
Stop by the Ranger's office or you can often find them on the map sign post. If you want nice quality Topo maps I go to Mytopo and order them in 1:24,000 scale.
Shalom
Bushcraft 2024: take your sleeping system and camp in the woods. Maybe whittle a spoon. Jokes aside :) Where, in your opinion, is the difference between your definition of bushcraft and survival? Just the outcome? Like staying alive to eventually be found OR to sustaining yourself off grid? Survival, to me is more drastic than bushcraft. Bushcraft, however, does not mean to go off grid into the wilderness and purposefully staying there for months on end. If it would be that, pretty much all settlers would have been bushcrafters. The question arises: when did they stop being bushcrafters and become settlers? Bushcraft nowadays is more and more understood as making due with what you have (as little as possible) and building small projects on weekends. Alone is a survival format, not a bushcraft format, maybe this is why your definition does not appear to be 100% fitting imho.
In defining bushcraft I look for what aspects are unique to it and don’t overlap into other defined practices. Survival I think would be the practice of staying alive and getting home, or back to civilization, in the event of something going wrong. Bushcraft seeks to be comfortable in a sustainable way. That’s why I wouldn’t put Alone in the survival category so much as the goal is to live out there without the need to go back to civilization. It’s an incredible test and we’ve seen Jordan Jonas thrive. Jordan seemed like he could’ve lived out there for the rest of his life, he wasn’t just trying to get by longer than the others. That’s why for me bushcraft is the alteration of nature to improve one’s situation. I can camp without practicing bushcraft. I can practice survival without practicing bushcraft- use a get-home bag for instance. I can historical camp without practicing bushcraft. However I can also do bushcraft in survival, historical, or car camping.
You say military, well the founder of Scouting was a General in the British Army, troop, patrol etc.
Still have my YUCCA pack and Scout mess kit from 65...... Still Scouting at 70 yrs young....
Cool 😎
