  • In this video, we capture 46100 Royal Scot on 8th May & 9th May 2024 on a Steam Dreams Excursion from Colchester to Barrow Hill LIP & return diesel hauled by Class 47 47828 on 8th & heading on a LE plus support coach move from Barrow Hill LIP to Southall Loco Services Ltd the next day on 9th May, all captured at Chesterfield.
We start the where we capture Royal Scot hurrying out of Chesterfield on the stretch of her day working from Colchester to Barrow Hill LIP, after dropping off passengers to look around Chesterfield or head off to Chatsworth House by coach. We see the Scot making a quick departure at Tapton, just north of Chesterfield Station where she whistles to the bridge sounding very nice indeed in her home territory!
This would be the first time Royal Scot has stopped at Chesterfield since the 1960s meaning this was a first for preservation!
We then fast forward to the next day where we capture 46100 racing and whistling through Chesterfield Station on platform 2 heading from Barrow Hill LIP to Southall Loco Services Ltd after spending the night at the last functioning roundhouse in the UK whilst the famous Crooked Spire bell rings for 10:45am as she passed through 4 mins early.
Originally she was suppose to come straight from Barrow Hill to Chesterfield but a last minute change meant she was going via Sheffield meaning the chance of a pass through platform 2 on the Midland Mainline. I was originally on Tapton Bridge but having seen the last minute change, a quick 10 min walk to Chesterfield Station to take the risk of her coming through platform 2 and being on the correct side for the sun and wanting a shot of her with one of her home territory stations in the background certainly paid off as she was due on the UBH (the slow line next to platform 3 if you know Chesterfield Station) where she would be on the wrong side of the sun. The quick change of plan was certainly worth doing!
Overall it a great two days getting one of the finest steam locos in preservation in her home territory of where she would've worked London St Pancras to Sheffield services etc was certainly very nice indeed!

Thanks very much David! I was very happy with the first location, it's great for getting steam there when they're departing from platform 3 :)

An excellent clip, and I would have been impressed by that start, if there had been no diesel pushing at the rear.

@@JD0G69 Wrong! No Royal Scot that I have ever heard or seen could accelerate a train of that weight, from a standing start, in the way that this one did. And I grew up with them in the 1950s and 60s. The diesel may not have been pushing by the time it passed the camera, but you can bet your life that it was beforehand.

@@user-cw9qn1nb2n It’s downhill out of Chesterfield heading northbound, so it will be faster than normal. I also grew up with them and my father use to drive them along the Midland Mainline, don’t discount the Scots for their pace and power. Also a good friend of mine was on the station to see it leave and told me the diesel wasn’t pushing so you’re the one who’s wrong! 🙂
