    How utterly fantastic! This reminds me greatly of the cable cars we have in San Francisco: particularly the first, street running section. Of course, those cars have the ability to grip and release the cables to control their speed, and thus are able to make stops along the streets, but the tech is very, very similar - including the pulleys for the cables and rail design in general.

    • @TheTouristLine

Never been on the tram, your video going up the hill gives a good impression of how steep it actually is in places, photos never do it justice. Amazing that pro cyclists rode the entire thing in a couple of minutes.

      They are all provided with big thick modern coats these days branded up with the tram logo etc (I only remember this because I left my coat in the car not knowing how cold it would be at the top and spent half the day wishing I had one) but you are right, on a bad day I can't imagine that is a pleasurable experience.

    As good as any in the world or even better.. Had a good rail trip up the Conwy Valley line, taxi from the station (£3.80) and then on the tramway.
    Lucky with the weather on a rain filled week on the North Wales narrow gauge steam railways. Even just before the school holidays they were full and the improvements since the 60's and 70's were amazing. Of course, the EU helped.

    On the first part of the descent, the driver in the corner of the screen looks like he's been superimposed like a presenter on top of his video presentation.
    How lucky there just happened to be a bit of dual track where the two trams met!

I started filming these videos with attractions I can drive too but next year I plan on going all over the UK and I will be factoring in as many hotels as I can just to try and help out (and enjoy myself, who doesn't like a good Irish bar). Great video, thanks for sharing. I used to go to Llandudno in the 1970s on holiday with my parents, this brought back some good memories. I actually remember there was a cable attached to the blue poles and the trams had pantographs. Do you know why this is no more? Also, at the very beginning of the video you'll see a square-looking white house up to the left distance. This was a guest house called Tudno House, and it's where my parents spent their honeymoon in 1958.

    • @TheTouristLine
      @TheTouristLine  3 года назад +10

      That's a brilliant story, I have just checked out the house and it's nice to know one of the memories attached to it. There used to be a cable but it was purely for communication (if there was an obstruction the pulley has to be stopped centrally). This has been replaced with modern mobile communication.

      You have stumbled upon my great dilemma when making these videos. I need them to look good, and I need them to show off a location, but I also need to leave people wanting to visit in person (as visitors keep these places open as we all know), without taking too much enjoyment away from the people who can never really visit for various reasons. It is a balance 😂

    Excellent! Thank you for the video of the entire system and the last short section showing the cables and pulleys working. I would have liked to have seen the cable traction wheels in the engine house but I expect they were out of bounds? I’ve never ridden on the tramway but seem to remember that the trolley pole on the roofs of the trams were actually just used for the telephone between the driver and the traction cable controller?
    I didn’t see any of the famous goats…but that might be because numbers have been reduced by sending some to Bournemouth where, I can tell you, they’ve settled down on our steep cliffs and are very happy indeed. Magnificent animals and so relaxed! Thanks fir the video again, I really enjoyed it! Rob, in Bournemouth.

    • @TheTouristLine
      @TheTouristLine  3 года назад +5

      Thank you for your kind comment! The engine house in the middle does have a glass viewing section and you can see the big cable drums for each side. Sadly as I had to run between the two trams and attach the camera etc I didn't have the time to film the middle section. As I had to have special permission to attach my camera I had to keep to specific trams. You are 100% correct about the trolley pole, it was always purely for communication and electric lighting before batteries took over.
      The goats are a sore point, the drivers told me they had seen some earlier that day so I was full of optimism but sadly they didn't want to make an appearance. I have been lucky enough to see them on a previous visit with the family and they are magnificent animals. I was unaware some had been sent down to Bournemouth but if they have been sent to East / West cliff I can picture them enjoying it, you definitely get better weather than the Orme!

    Llandudno was the place for our annual holiday when I was a kid as my father was a tram fanatic. I’m sure the Great Orme Trams had a trolley then. I think the trolley was for lights and communication. When did the trolleys go and how is the lighting powered now?

    • @TheTouristLine

    £8.50 for adults £6.50 for children and family tickets available that I think are valid all day.
    A beautiful pier with friendly staff a short walk away from the embarkation station, beautiful views from the summit and if you are travelling into or out of North Wales along the A55 some fantastic gentle family friendly, sandy beaches well worth stopping at along the way/way out. Each to their own but imo far better than spending £400+ for a family of 4 to take a 2minute zipline ride at Bethesda.
    Edit to say: Of course the fantastic copper mines near the summit as well!

    for a few minutes my brain couldnt work out the track arrangement for the rails and cable in the upper section of the lower half. but watching the tram come down the hill i was able to work it out. though a question still remains, the passing loops are not dead center between the halfway station and victoria station and halfway and the summit so is the cable continously moving and the trams can attach and detach from the cable, (similar to the ones in san francisco)

    • @TheTouristLine
      @TheTouristLine  2 года назад

      The trams are permanently attached to the cable, I have had my measuring tool out on Google Earth and all four sections are exactly 0.25 miles from start to passing loop. I checked the time stamps on the video and some sections do take longer than others, this can be because of more weight on one tram than the other, making tiny adjustments etc. Length wise, they are identical.
      I enjoyed looking in to that one!

    Given that "The lower section is built in or alongside the public road and has gradients as steep as 1 in 3.8 (26.15%). The track throughout this section is laid as grooved rail within the road surface, and the cable lies below the road surface in a conduit between the rails. The bottom half of the section is single-track, but above the passing loop it has interlaced double track." I would kindly like to know who operates the switch (point) that leads to the "Interlaced double track". Grateful for the attention given to me, I would like to take this opportunity to extend cordial and sincere regards

    • @TheTouristLine
      @TheTouristLine  Год назад +1

      Hi, the switch points are completely automatic, the tram will always take the left path. Because the trams are attached to the cable at a fixed point, they will always pass at the same point on each journey making sure they don't collide.

    • @Luigi-uj5ml

    • @TheTouristLine

      Interestingly it has always been powered from the central cable drums. The old electric towers at the side of the track used to be used to power lights and communication only (both battery powered now)

    It is clear that the tram cars of the Upper section must inevitably change the side to which they are attached to the drag rope which forms a closed loop on itself, before making the journey in the opposite direction to the previous one (going up or going down ), otherwise, once they reached the spring switches of the central loop, each of the two tram carriages would move onto the right track while the cable would continue along the other track of the central loop. I would therefore like to kindly know how the tram carriages in operation along the Upper section unhook from one of the two sections of the drag rope which forms a closed ring on itself and engage the other segment of the same rope. I hope I have conveyed the idea. Thanking you in advance for your availability, I would like to take this opportunity to extend cordial and sincere regards

    • @TheTouristLine
      @TheTouristLine  Год назад +1

      Hi, I can answer this one for you. The cable isn't on a 'loop' as you expect. There is a drum one side of the tramway and they wind it so far to send the tram up to the top, and for the reverse journey they do just reverse the drum, meaning the tram uses the same cable up and down.

    • @Luigi-uj5ml
      @Luigi-uj5ml Год назад +1

      @@TheTouristLineThank you very much for the answer, but if each tram used the same cable used for the ascent to the top, on the way back, having reached the central loop, it would find itself on the other track, i.e. the cable would run along the top track. left, in the direction of descent, and the tram on the right track. This does not happen in the single-track funiculars with two balanced cabins that cross each other at the central loop equipped with switches without moving parts designed by the Swiss engineer Carl Roman Abt. In order to travel on this type of switches without moving parts, one of the two cabins has wheels with a double flange on the left side and without a flange on the right side, for example in the ascending direction; the other car is instead equipped with wheels with double flanges on the right side and wheels without flanges on the left side. Here in Genoa we have two funiculars with this type of wheels as well as a rack railway, probably the only case in the world of a rack railway equipped with switches without moving parts of the type designed by the Swiss engineer Carl Roman Abt. The horizontal / vertical lift of Monte Galletto is also equipped with an Abt type switch and the wheels of the two cabins are flanged as mentioned above.
