That was NOT the point of the question that we don't have better upscaling solutions
Many last gen games looked wAAAy better because they avoided using technologies that were simply beyond the scope of the hardware(RT) and spent time and effort into making the game look and perform well using the technologies that worked well with the hardware

    • @bollywongaloid
      @bollywongaloid 4 месяца назад +3

Exactly! Upscaling is just companies trying to find cheap shortcuts. Also the argument that back in the day ‘the ps3 struggled to hit 720p’ is irrelevant when you consider the vast majority of new HD TV’s that released back in ‘05/06 were only 720p and 1080i at best. That’s why 1080 was originally labelled as ‘full hd’ because it was a selling point of the better ones available at the time.

    • @JohnSmith-bt4lf
      @JohnSmith-bt4lf 4 месяца назад +7

RT isn't actually for the players' benefit. At least on paper, it's supposed to reduce manual work for developers, who can let players' hardware do the heavy lifting. Yes, non-RT modes are hard to distinguish from RT today, but that is the result of months and months of manual rendering and testing that the devs want to eliminate. The fact that the RT result looks more realistic is just a bonus.
As game development costs skyrocket I don't blame devs for wanting to get a head start on RT. Yes, the current consoles are not quite ready for it. But it's also important for the devs to build up experience so that when better hardware becomes mainstream (hopefully next console generation), they will be ready to quickly push out good-looking games without having to learn from scratch.

This is the first console generation in a long time where many games have a 60 FPS performance mode. I want it to stay that way regardless of resolution going forward. Options are always nice, so if people want higher resolutions, allow them to do that with the graphics mode. That said, developers should keep 60 FPS performance modes around, too. I understand that people don’t like lower resolutions, but I don’t mind them if that means my game can run at a higher frame rate which I care more about. Plus, games with performance modes are future-proof for later generations that support backward compatibility as shown with the Series X and PS5 running Xbox One X and PS4 Pro games at their maximum resolution on performance mode at 60 FPS and still look phenomenal.

Honestly people need to understand we're in the middle of a double render-paradigm shift.
No only are we shifting to Ray Tracing, but we are also shifting to compute geometry (Mesh Shaders). Both of which allow for extreme amounts of flexibility in the work that can be done for the developer and theoretical very high-end returns visually. But they come at a cost.
It's like Fixed Function -> Programmable Shaders. There was a time where things had growing pains, TSR solutions are the attempt to mitigate said growing pains.
Downside is AMD sort of was on the backfoot every time this generation (RT, Mesh Shading, and Upscaling) so they are far behind NVIDIA and even Intel in the "Next Gen" featureset, DLSS and XeSS 1.3 look extremely good, the former able to reconstruct as low as 360p into a viable 1080p image for example if the implementation is good. Not to mention how far ahead the Ray Tracing Deployment in Ampere/Lovelace is versus the anemic RT capability of RDNA2 (legitimately, 1 Ampere RT core at 1GHz actually may have more RT Acceleration capability versus the whole 36 Ray Accelerators in the PS5)

Ray Tracing and 4k are the biggest mistake I've ever seen Sony and Microsoft do with their consoles. There is absolutely no reason at all for consoles with like an RX 6700 level of GPU to be using Ray Tracing which struggles on all but the best PC GPUs, and 4k which requires either a 4090 or DLSS on lower tier GPUs to run at 60fps.
If they were targeting 30fps then it made sense, but to me they should have been pushing the visuals in other ways. The 2080Ti would barely play games at 1440p with RT, the 3090 was able to comfortably do it at 4k with upscaling, the 4090 can finally do RT without necessarily using DLSS, but PC is still little bit away from RT running well at 4k on mid-range GPUs. The current gen consoles had mid-tier components compared to PC at the time in 2020.

I always feel like DF is maybe a little high on their own supply when it comes to resolution - especially for consoles. I was in NYC this weekend, dropped by the Nintendo NYC store and they had Princess Peach Showtime playing on a 16-foot screen (or rather a wall-sized LED array) with 4:2:0 chroma subsampling (not even smoothed on decode) and nobody cared. Every imperfection was on display larger than life and it was fine. It looked good, even.
Myself, I finally got a 4k TV and I've been playing Immortals of Aveum and I absolutely cannot see on my TV the stuff you all pointed out in your coverage. It's too far away and it moves too fast.
And, hell, I've been playing Kingdom Come Deliverance on Switch and it's, again, just fine. Nice looking, even, at times. The lighting is FAR more important than the resolution there.
Like, I get that the goal of your work is to analyze this stuff, and I love seeing the breakdowns and explanations, but when you sit down and just play the game, do you really notice? Or have you just trained yourself to notice after poring over hours of HDMI capture video?

Using the 360/PS3 as a scapegoat about people not complaining during that generation is bunk. People were playing on shitty 720p/1080p LCD's back then, not 4k120 panels. It simply mattered less if the game was running at lower resolutions because they were much closer to the native resolutions of the panels. Also, it's just flat out not true. Plenty of people complained about the fact that later era 360/PS3 games ran like crap. It's partly why PC had a resurgence because it was relatively inexpensive to build a mid range rig and it offered a much better overall experience and games were cheaper.

4k ruined gaming. I remember playing Horizon Zero Dawn and Uncharted 4, etc. on the PS4 on a 1080p tv, and the graphics were crisps and sharp. When 4k TV's became the norm, I got a PS4 Pro, then the introduction to temporal upscaling, checkerboard, etc. came into play. That's when things started getting blurry. I have played BluRay movies and 4K movies on my 75" 4k Sony TV, and can barely tell the difference, though I am viewing from a distance. The standard should have been 1080p native, then add all the graphical bells and whistles. Today I output my PS5 and Series X to 1080p, then let the TV do the upscaling. My thinking is you get a 1440p image, supersampled down to 1080p, then the TV upscales to fit the screen. To me games look better, and at the minimum they don't look any worse.

It makes sense when you're just a few feet away from your computer monitor to have the highest resolutions possible but I just don't see what the point is when you're sitting on a couch a significant distance away from a large TV set. People are enamored with the IDEA of playing games in 4K or even 8K. The REALITY though is it makes little difference. Using modern processors to run gameplay essential uses of ray-tracing or even more ambitious uses of layers upon layers of transparency effects would be better for gaming but you probably won't get that with higher resolutions as it really just compounds the problems associated with running such effects.

I think RT should be ignored on consoles entirely, and we clearly lack developers that care for optimization, the baseline should be 1080p, if you can't reach 1080p 60fps on a hardware like the PS5/XBOX Series S/X you don't have a project that it's "too big" or "too complex" you have an optimization problem.
The PS3 had The Last of Us, or Destiny 1, Final Fantasy XIII, the vast majority of Assassin's Creed games, heck you even have games that came out "recently" like COD Ghost, and MGS V, and it runs them, maybe not at 60 fps, but they are playable, but it clearly shows the lack of optimization we've been seeing since we touched the x86 systems and we have an standard hardware between sony and microsoft, devs have become complacent and rely too much on engine tools that allegedly do the work for them, and that has provoked that devs have stopped thinking in how we can push this hardware further.
We have a fairly recent case: Kaze Emanuar, remaking the Mario64 engine, the dude is achieving gamecube graphics ON THE FREAKING N64, Immortals of Aveum has no right to look and run as bad as it does, on a hardware like the PS5, when right now we are are managing gamecube graphics on the N64, we have Wolfenstein The new order on 360/ps3 and it looks way to similar in quality, there is an entire gen of consoles between them.
Another case: Killzone Mercenaries on the PSVita, how the hell did they manage to do it? i don't fucking know, but that's an optimization milestone if I've ever seen one.
Now everyone relies on upscaling to "fix the game" for them, na boy, if you can't run FFXVI at minimum 1080 native 60fps you have to fix it, if Dragon's Dogma 2 can't achieve 1080p 60fps native you have to fix it.
Heck we recently had a video by Taki Udon showing the Nintendo Switch, running games AT NATIVE 4K.

I want it to be up to spec as that's what I expected buying the console (and got from last gen games at 60fps). Solution is simple tho and already on the way - just give console players higher tier console Apple style for those who are willing to pay premium. Lower resolutions on consoles results in LESS headroom on PCs. One of the points of waiting for a native PC port, is that the extra headroom on the PC can overcome poor optimization for a stable locked 30 FPS on PC, for when that was not accomplished within the console spec. 720/28 FPS on console becomes 720p/30 FPS on PC at the mid-range.

I think people will have to accept that if they want native 4K 60Fps to become standard these console are going to have to become more expensive so they can be more powerful. The increasing power demamds of games is keeping pace with the power increases in console hardware and making the console more expensive to make them more powerful is the only way to bridge that gap without breakthroughs in game dev techniques and engine optimization. I think $100 more is reasonable, $200 more is a push, and $300 is too much.

@@user-sx3pc4dj3r The problem with QHD is it sits in a weird middle ground.... so I can understand why it was skipped. I almost got a QHD monitor (for the size) but just cannot afford the HW to go along with it and a 4K monitor in 1k mode is apparently still not good enough.
You make a good point but I would add that it seems more likely that the hardware manufacturers were locked into multi-decade planned obsolescence production which got disrupted by the introduction of higher res output.... or AI got too good too fast and they needed some way to slow down genpop capacity to keep profits flowing.
In the end we can only speculate as to why they are stubbornly playing catch up. As it stands the HW is simply too slow, too hot, too power hungry and too expensive. I don't even want to think of what it would take to properly drive 8k.

The problem is that developers take the easy way out nowadays. They don't rely on clever solutions to deal with limitations like all previous gens (especially up until the 7th gen). Instead, they just let the over the counter solutions available in modern engines to do the heavy work, and hope that consoles having similar architectures compared to PCs to deal will make do.
Publishers have been ruining the game industry, but modern devs have their share of fault as well. And if this trend continues, it will only get worse.

I think the reason we see games have such low resolutions, is because the divide between console generations have been blurred more than ever before, especially with the PS4 Pro and One X, so developers have felt pressured to use more cutting edge effects to try and distinguish current gen games from the previous generation, which has resulted in image clarity being sacrificed.
I think its clear with current-gen hardware, the tradeoff of having these advanced visual features for image clarity and performance isn't worth it. To me, I think developers should have always used a native 4k 30 FPS as a MINIMUM baseline (1080p for Series S) for this console generation. You can go down to lower resolutions like 1080p-1440p for or use upscaling tech like FSR 2 for performance modes or cutting edge visual features like ray-tracing, but I feel like there should be at minimum be at least one native 4k option.

Who cares if I get incredible looking shadows or reflections or global illumination if the entire image output is the size of a postage stamp pulled through a shitty upscaler and it all looks really poor in the end anyway?
The best example is still Jedi Survivor which has a bunch of high resolution textures (inflating the install size to *150 GB*) but it's impossible to tell how high resolution they are because they all get upscaled so poorly anyway in the final image output. They could probably have used textures half the resolution because the final image output is such a blurry mess anyway.

The screen tearing in 60fps is unplayable in my opinion and when switching to 30fps I expect a consistent framerate, but it drops regularly. There is also a lot of collision errors that are laughable in cut scenes. The state of AAA gaming is very poor atm, yet a game like Helldivers at £30-40 rrp, comes and blows the triple A developer games at £60-£120 out of the water!

There is SO much that goes into AAA games today to narrow it down, not least of all is the quality/experience of the dev team on top of what things corporate is shoving down their throats or interfering with the creative process.
It's gotten too big, bloated and spoiled with excess. It's hard to keep a machine that complex running smoothly and efficiently.

-do i have a problem with little bit of tinkering and getting know how ?
