After a previous bad experience with ashtanga, I was afraid to try Lesley's ashtanga videos. After practicing with Lesley for 3 years, I gave ashtanga a chance, and I'm glad! Thanks to her reassurances, I don't feel bad that I can't do a headstand or float into chaturanga or do crane pose. I can do plenty, and this class was a good, strengthening workout. Many thanks to Lesley and the whole Fightmaster team.

A challenging practice, especially if you are not an advanced yogi, but proud that I stuck with it till the end. Throughout the session, I kept coming back to what Leslie said "Be an observer, not a critic of your practice." It helped me a lot; so instead of cursing my own self and body for not being able to do the poses exactly as my instructor, I simply observed and made modifications: out of breath to do a chaturanga? No biggie, go all the way down and do baby cobra :) Thanks for this class and sending us all to break a sweat!

Great video. Just FYI, I noticed that you have a lovely bouquet of lilies on the ground and that your cat Elmer was roaming around. Lilies are deadly to cats. Even just stepping in a minute bit of pollen can send them to the hospital. Just thought you would want to know.

Leslie, I’m such a fan of your channel, have been following your flows for a couple years now!
One thing I’m a little confused by, however, is the choice of words ‘for weight loss’. Whilst there is certainly no debate over the positive effects of yoga on the body, (as well as the monkey mind!), I find the specific choice of words to sound a little too much like diet culture rhetoric. Do those positive effects on the body need to be related to weight loss in order to be valid?
I recently recommended your channel to a friend who, like me, is wary of dangerous diet culture messaging. I reassured her that I haven’t seen you use such -potentially- harmful language in quite a while. I’m sure this well meaning message of mine is inadvertently inviting all sorts of responses in defence of a person’s right to body sovereignty, including the right to lose weight....but....it just seems a little counter to the message of accepting what ‘is’ and focussing on feeling good in the moment, whatever size body you’re currently living in. The words ‘for weight loss’ implies a preference toward smaller bodies, potentially further marginalising larger bodied folk from getting involved. Particularly those who have worked hard to life a life free from the pressure to shrink their body.
Any natural weight loss as a side-effect of yoga is simply that; a side effect.
Despite always living in a ‘thin’ body all my life, even I fell prey to the dangerous cultural ideals and became quite orthorexic. This hyper-focus on a person’s body weight as indicator of ‘health’ unfortunately caused detrimental physical and mental health effects.
I do believe the Health At Every Size model (popularised by Dr Lindo Bacon) has some truly worthwhile arguments about pursuing healthful *behaviours* rather than simply aiming solely for weight loss as a ‘fix’ to what ails them (which often leads women, and more frequently men, to quite disordered relationships with food and exercise).
The diet industry is currently worth around $72billion dollars and it is a model that works on diets NOT working, i.e women who attempt intentional weight loss have around a 95% failure rate (afterwards putting weight back on and often a little more, with each diet ‘cycle’).
For me, yoga was part of my recovery from a disordered relationship with my body...again, despite not being in a larger body (people in larger bodies face daily hurtful marginalisation in our culture). It taught me to actually accept my *neccessary* weight gain (provided I ignored all teachers/videos which promised weight loss/‘toned abs’/‘sculpted butt’, whatever else!).
It helped me to sit with the perceived discomfort of my body. I still live in a ‘thin’ body, yet I actively accept body diversity in humans.
I see so many yoga flows promising weight loss...yet I only see those teachers in larger bodies (Dianne Bondy, Jessamyn Stanley, Dana Falsetti) promising TRUE body liberation. It’d be so cool to have a ‘thin ally’ in the online yoga community.
I understand the need to draw in clicks and views, to shout about yoga’s physical health benefits, but what if they could NOT buy into the diet culture?
I apologise for the essay. I was just a little surprised to see those words on your video.
I will always continue to support your channel and ‘like’ your flows, but with the crazy year we’ve had this far, I also feel like life is too short to not speak up (so long as it’s polite!) Thank you again. I truly hope this is received with the sincerity with which it was written. XXX

There are a few things for yoga for reducing weight
Find a suitable program locally or online and stick to it
Do yoga with a colleague so you have another person to help you

What does "bunda" (sp?) mean, when you say "engage your bunda"?

    • @Fightmasteryoga
      @Fightmasteryoga  4 года назад

Essentially, bandhas are engaged to gain control and lock your energy - prana, or life force - the way you want. The locks are employed to attain control of your energy system, to direct this energy to the parts of your body you desire it to go to.
The root (Mula) and throat (Jalandhara) bandhas’ function is to seal the upper and lower end of the spinal column. Jalandhara bandha temporarily prevents prana from moving up, while Mula bandha blocks the downward movement of energy and pulls it back towards the navel region. When both are engaged at the same time, it’s like two sticks being rubbed together - with the application of the stomach lock as well, magnifying it to produce the fire of heat.
Bandhas are often first learned and engaged during practices of kriya and pranayama and once mastered can be used in asana practice as well. Bear in mind, it may take some practice until you’re able to engage your bandhas to the most refined degree.
While Mula and Jalandhara bandhas can be performed both after inhalation and exhalation, Uddihyana and Maha bandha are only engaged in Bahya Kumbhka - external retention.
Accessing them can be as simple as pulling your chin in towards the neck to activate the jalandara bandha, or pulling your belly button up and in to support the lower back and engage the uddiyana bandha.
