I’m so glad I found your channel! This was the exact cleaner I wanted to see tested. You’ve really made me realize that different rooms need different cleaners. Your format is awesome too. No nonsense and showing the test and results clearly. I’m gonna binge all your content today 😂
Thank you very much!! I try to limit the chit chat and just get to the point of what people want to see! I find it fascinating that some cleaners do so well in one area and not well at all in others. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
Another thing to consider is there are different germs in each person's home. Also, different germs are killed differently.
Absolutely. My channel is only about results from my home, not a laboratory setting, and not every person's home. I enjoy looking at labels because not every cleaner can kill every bacteria. To me it is interesting to see how well carious cleaners perform in different locations.
Love the video! This series is so interesting and helpful! Could you test just the 70% rubbing alcohol alone (and without dilution)?
That is a great idea! I will add 70% rubbing alcohol to my list!! Thank you for watching!!!
@@FieldOfFocus yes please do
This was awesome TJ. I may have to whip that up and keep it under my kitchen sink!!
This is my favorite DIY cleaner by far!!! I love it! It is a good one to have around!
I just tried it on my stainless steel and really takes off the fingerprints. I changed the recipe and used 91% alcohol and 10 drops of oregano. Just my preference.
@@Sensi919how does that smell?
Great video! I'm glad to see the DIY cleaner works, as it's very similar to my own DIY recipe using tea tree and/or other essential oils (same brand you use). I hope you can take this experiment a little further at some point in the future, because there are a couple of burning questions I've had for years and have never been able to find the answer to. Here goes ...
1. I see a lot of variation in the DIY tutorial vids from people touting these types of cleaners with products such as vinegar, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, vodka, and essential oils. Everyone uses different proportions and different types and amounts of water. I don't have time to dig it up at the moment, but I read somewhere about a "study" (official or not? can't remember) where someone put a single drop of tea tree oil in a 32-oz bottle of water (tap water, I think), and claimed to remove a significant amount of bacteria from surfaces. From what I've seen in many DIY videos, I think a lot of people use way more essential oils than is probably necessary, and considering that some of the brands (including my preferred brand) are rather expensive, it makes sense to use as LITTLE oil as you can get away with to get the desired results!
Also, the DIY recipe you used here is the first time I've seen a recipe with equal proportions of water and alcohol. I'm curious what the purpose of that is, though the viewer may not know himself if he just got the recipe from a blog or something. Most of the time, I've seen alcohol (and/or vinegar and/or vodka and/or dish soap) used in a very small amount strictly as an emulsifier for the essential oil(s) and not necessarily for its cleaning and/or bacterial-killing power.
So all that to say, I'm curious to see what would happen if you used different formulas, including, say, one bottle with NO essential oil, or maybe referring back to your previous video where you showed how effective Dr. Bronner's soap is with just water and nothing else, and then adding essential oils in different quantities, starting with 1 drop, then maybe 5 drops, and 10 drops, and see if there is a significant enough difference to warrant using the extra quantity of essential oils.
Perhaps also at least one experiment altering the viewer's formula to use the same quantity of essential oil and water, but perhaps just a quarter cup or even two tablespoons of alcohol.
2. The second burning question is distilled water versus tap water. A lot of essential oil "experts" say that it's important to use distilled water to maximize the window of time for effectiveness of the solution and to avoid bacteria being introduced and/or growing in the solution over time. It also seems like distilled water would give better results because you would be eliminating any potential bacteria coming from tap water and/or the faucet mechanism.
So I'd like to see a comparison of the same solution mixed with a tap water version and a distilled water version.
3. And the final burning question is: How long do these solutions last? I remember seeing a video years ago from someone in the science community that talked about homemade solutions being completely ineffective after a relatively short amount of time compared to the chemical-laden store-bought alternatives. That is likely why we see so many precautions in some of the DIY recipes to make only what you plan to use in one cleaning session and discard the remainder. Having seen that video many years ago, it has been quite alarming to me to see people making up these ginormous bottles of cleaning solution that clearly would be sitting on a shelf or in a cabinet for many months. I have some cleaning bottles that last more than a year (quantity-wise) because I just don't have a need to use them that often. No telling how effective (or not) they are after all that time!
So I would like to see some DIY solutions (both with regular water and distilled water) that have sat around for, say, seven days, a month, three months, even six months (assuming those solutions passed the earlier tests as still being effective) to see how effective they still are after all that time, if at all. This would be very useful for essential oils because they add to the cost, but it would also be just as useful to know for other popular solutions that don't always include essential oil - e.g., peroxide with water, vinegar with water, Dr. Bronner's with water. And the essential oil recipes, too, of course.
What I'm assuming will happen (though I would be happy to be proven wrong!) is that we'll see that after a fairly short time, most, if not all, of these DIY solutions are significantly less effective, if at all. That would then behoove us all to make smaller amounts of the solution to assure that we are not wasting $$$ on DIY products that are not only eating up the comparative savings over store-bought alternatives, but are also not giving us the cleaning or sanitizing power that we have deceived ourselves into thinking we were getting.
Thank you for making these fun-to-watch videos!
~Karen :)
Hi Karen,
Again thank you for the thoughtful response! I love all the suggestions you have!
1. I would love to play around with the amount of essential oil to be effective. You might enjoy the video I made about essential oils. That I did a bit differently from the cleaning videos, but I was trying to establish a baseline for which oils do inhibit bacterial growth so I could try to figure out how to make an effective DIY essential oil cleaner. I am not sure why TJ chose to use equal parts water an alcohol. I love your suggestions of trying different formulas.
2. I do use distilled water for all my cleaning products. I use distilled water to diluted the soaps, using in my steam cleaner etc. testing tap vs distilled is most certainly an interesting idea!
3. The timeline of efficacy is a great thought. I know h2o2 will break down if not in a light block bottle. This again would make for a great long term experiment. Make the solution and test that day, then come up with a timeline for rest, maybe a week, two weeks, monthly… until I see it become ineffective. Great ideas!!! If the DIY cleaners are short lasting then you are correct that there could be a ton of waste and homemade cleaners should be made in much smaller bottles.
I am so glad you are enjoying these videos. There is so much to explore!!!
@@FieldOfFocus I'm late getting back to the party LOL and just seeing your response to my comment. I'm glad you enjoyed my comments and suggestions, and I hope to see some of these come to life in future videos. I know you have a long waiting list of special requests, so I am not holding my breath for my wish list items to race to the top of the list overnight LOL. But all of your videos are fun and interesting, so there's plenty to keep me busy while I'm waiting in the queue! Keep up the good work, and thank you for doing all these experiments to answer all of our burning questions about what works and what doesn't! Also, kudos to the overall production quality of your videos and the fact that you get right to the point and don't waste our precious time with unnecessary fluff. You're the best! xoxo ~Karen :)
wow thank you for making this!
You are so welcome! Thank you so much for watching!
I LOVE this! My DIY kitchen cleaner is veeeeeery much like this one! I’m glad to see that it works this well in the kitchen!😲😲😲
It’s interesting to see how it does in the bathroom too. I don’t use it in my bathroom, but now I know it’s probably best not to.
I was super impressed with those kitchen results!!! I have so much I am working on.. PS Essential oil testing is on the way! Since there are so many potential amazing essential oils to clean with, I am swabbing my dish from the kitchen sink and placing a drop of EO on the dish to see if the bacteria grows! Super interesting!!
@@FieldOfFocus Oooh! I look forward to see the results to THAT!
This is awesome. I’m making some now. I’m trying to stay away from bleach and other disinfectants.
Great! I love this DIY cleaner and I am glad TJ suggested it! Thanks for watching!
Great video.

Hi! I really appreciate how your videos truly test the efficacy of these cleaning products, so thank you very much! I was wondering if you could test either one or a few different UV sanitizing wands and see how well they work? I'm really curious about their results. All the best!
Hello! Thank you so much for your kind words! I love the idea of testing out UV Sanitizing wands, that is a great suggestion!! I will put it on the list!!!! Thank you for watching!

Wow! Thank you so much! So glad to know the results!
Just checked out your patreon (spell?) account…is there a way to make a “one time” donation vs a monthly subscription?
Hi! Glad you enjoyed the video. I am really happy with the results for the kitchen! I have been using your cleaner in the kitchen since I got those results! It is a great DIY cleaner! I think Patreon only has monthly deal. I do have a "buy me coffee" account too. I had a few people email me asking for my venmo.. so I gave them that. I should just put my Venmo in the description too in case someone wants to donate but not monthly. My Venmo is @Linda-Strickland-3 I do have paypal too, that is paypal.me/lincap Supper happy to make that video to test out your cleaner!
This channel is excellnt!!!!

This is why I keep my toothbrush and toothpaste in the kitchen, not the bathroom.
BTW, where can petri dishes be ordered online?

WOW. 🏆👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I was impressed with it!!
Do you think that the differing results had anything to do with how fresh the homemade cleaner was? Since alcohol evaporates, do you think that there would be a positive difference if the cleaner was made, and then immediately used to clean the bathroom?
Thank you for your videos! They’re educational and helpful.
Great thought! It would be interesting to see the efficacy of a home made product with alcohol over time. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Thank you TJ lol
YES! I love TJ's formula! :)
Sounds good for the kitchen but does it actually remove food/grease, actual normal kitchen grime? It must only kill certain bacteria, not the bacteria usually found in bathrooms I guess?
I have used this to clean my stove top and it did work surprisingly well. I also have used it to clean my fridge and dishwasher.. so it does have the ability to clean and disinfect, I just have the tendency to grab the Pink Stuff or Dr Bronner's for more cleaning type jobs that I don't need a disinfectant.

Can you test Young Living's Household Cleaner using the recommendation for normal strength (cleaner : water ratio)?

I am curious how Listerine (or generic) would do.
So using Listerine as a household cleaner or a mouth wash?? Thanks for watching!
As a cleaner :)
The smell is strong, so I wouldn't clean my whole house in it, but I have poured some (the original, brown variety, which has more alcohol) on my faucet and other small area where I didn't want to use chemicals.
Have u tried dollar tree Awesome bleach? I’m curious if it disinfects.
I have not tried that yet. I can add it to my viewer suggestion list!
i use a 1:1 ratio of alcohol (91%) and water with a copycat of the doterra immunity essential oils blend
Interesting! I tested the OnGuard cleaner concentrate I have a video of that. Thanks for watching!!
@@FieldOfFocus you're welcome, i subbed a few days ago and am watching all the old ones lol.
Would you rather use this mixture to clean your entire house or vinegar mixture?
I do not clean my home with vinegar, I just tested it for my viewers. So I would be more likely to use this over vinegar. I really dislike having the vinegar smell in my house. Thanks for watching!
How much is the tea tree oil contributing to the disinfecting? I am not fond of the tea tree oil and was wondering if I could use a different oil.
Hard to say .. but I have tested 91% alcohol alone, as well as Dr Bronners,.. and testing inhibition tests for the tea tree..

Does 70% alcohol need any recipes
I have not tested 70% alone, this video was a viewer request so it was a mixture. I have tested 91% here ruclips.net/video/R5Xg7Zs11NI/видео.html thanks for watching!
Yeah but I would like to see the difference between adding the essential oils and not putting it in.
Because in my mind of course 70%alcohol will kill bacteria....
Yeah I can see that. I was using TJ’s DIY recipe. I am currently testing essential oils on Petri dishes right now and am excited with the results so far. Stay tuned for that video in a few weeks or check out my Patreon for early results (they will be posted tomorrow). Thanks for watching and thanks for your thoughts!
I'd like to see a video on killing all types of viruses. But I don't think you would come in contact with all that. Maybe if you went to a public restroom and then looked at them under a microscope to check the befores and afters. Lol
Viruses is something I do not have the ability to test. I can't grow viruses on a petri dish like bacteria. While it would be fascinating to see those results, just out of the scope of my home set-up. Thanks for watching and commenting!
