I liked everything here except the initial meeting between Clark and Zod at the farm. In my mind Zod wouldn't reveal the full evil of his plan initially. Rather he would look to befriend Clark, like a brother, with the goal of having Clark join him. As Clark has never truly felt like a human he is open to this new kinship with a fellow Kryptonian. Zod's deception plants a seed of doubt in Clark's mind as to where his allegiances really lie. Jur-El could reveal Zod's true nature later. Clark's recommitment to mankind at that point would carry that much more weight then. It would also set-up Batman v Superman better as Bruce Wayne could view any time Clark spent palling around with Zod as reason to not trust Superman.

That idea is worse than what we got which was far superior ...Zod revealing his plans to Clark set up Clark's big choice and conflict with Zod...The choice between New Krypton or Earth ...Which would carry weight given he spent years exploring mankind while searching for who he was... To be happy to find out your heritage and then to have to sacrifice it by making a hard choice is very emotional and impacrful . And it wouldn't work if Zod friended him over time (which he briefly did anyway) .... This choice needed conflict first ... It was executed brilliantly the way it was.
And how would Batman know he pal'd around with Zod?

While I am a big fan of a more optimistic Superman, part of this just rubs me the wrong way, having Zod be responsible for Krypton's destruction, the entire point of Krypton's destruction to me has been the tragedy of it being a diabulous ex machina that while it could be foreseen, could not really be blamed on any one single person. By having Zod's actions be directly responsible for the destruction of Krypton, it feels like it cheapens the emotion behind the planet's destruction it becomes less "there but for the grace of god go I, for even this powerful civilization was brought low by a horrible disaster" and more "supervillians always be screwing things up for everybody"... does that make any sense?

    • @thebatman4991

I also think that Krypton's destruction not being caused by a specific man, or woman, but rather the entire race and being due to how they operate us beings show why humans (representing free will) is superior to kryptonians (representing fate).

    Zack Snyder's Clark Kent:
    * Saves about ten kids and a bus driver from drowning
    * Protects bullies from his own wrath (instead crushing fence)
    * Lets Jonathan Kent be killed by tornado (to protect mankind from possible global devastation his secret becoming public knowledge might cause)
    * Saves rig workers trapped on rig
    * Saves rig workers and helicopter crew from collapsing rig
    * Tries to protect a waitress from harassment by drunk trucker
    * Protects drunk trucker from his own wrath (instead taking out his frustration on said trucker's truck)
    * Saves Lois Lane from a robot
    * Saves Lois from internal bleeding
    * Chooses to protect mankind by surrendering (and making sure Lois isn't mistreated by the military) and willingly being handed over to General Zod
    * Saves Lois from plummeting to Earth in a damaged space-pod
    * Protects Martha from Zod's wrath (in a reckless way that endangers Smallville)
    * Tells the locals of Smallville to get inside
    * Saves fighter pilot from Faora
    * Saves soldier falling out of helicopter (probably the very soldier who just shot him in the face with a minigun)
    * Saves Colonel Hardy from Faora
    * Saves Earth's mankind by destroying the World Engine (fully aware he would be weakened in its presence)
    * Protects Lois, Hardy and Hamilton from Zod firing at plane they're in by ramming himself into scout ship
    * Chooses to wreck the scout ship (including the Genesis chamber, possibly the last hope for the Kryptonian bloodlines) for the sake of Earth's mankind
    * Saves Lois from falling to her death
    * Protects as many as he can from Zod by keeping Zod's focus on himself (Zod having sworn to kill everyone on the planet.)
    * Saves Earth's mankind (again) by killing Zod (since he can't exactly sit on a fellow Kryptonian until one of them dies of old age)
Haters gonna hate but jeez, people.

Dude, no one denies that Superman saves people in Man of Steel; the main problem is he's portrayed in a dark, edgy, overly serious, and overly realistic manner when the Man of Tomorrow should be shown in a much more vibrant, colorful, cheerful, and overall up beat light since he is overflowing with kindness, positivity, optimism, and most importantly hope.
Also all of the scenes where Superman saves people get overshadowed by all the death and destruction that happen during the final act thanks to the World Engine and the final battle between Zod and Superman.

Also the crystal tech is iconic to Superman, due to the Richard Donner Superman; this was not a part of most of the other interpretations (or the comics).
Also, the Kryptonian continent was something from Superman Returns. That didn't work there, and it probably won't in MoS. Part of the reason why is that idea of it makes no sense (much like Zod's idea of teraforming of Earth onto New Krypton). You'll never have a 1:1 conversion. From Earth orbiting a yellow (actually white) sun, to the gravity of Earth compared to Krypton; it doesn't make sense.

I would personally try to find a sort of halfway point regarding Jonathan And Clark's conversations; maybe when a young (say, about eight to ten years old) Clark starts realising he has superpowers, he wants to immediately start using them to help his dad on the farm, stop bullies at school, etc. But Jonathan takes him to the barn and shows him a calf (I think the Kents are cattle farmers, I'm not sure) that sadly died, Jonathan says something like "I tried to help it breathe, but I hit it too hard". Clark, starting to see what his dad's saying, picks up a rock and crushes it into dust - in his mind's eye the dust becomes blood and he realises that he could be a destroyer if he's not careful, resulting in several years of him trying to figure out when he should and shouldn't take action. And give Jonathan a proper heroic death - he's still alive when Zod and his lackeys come to Earth and Jonathan takes a stand (as much as a man with a shotgun can) against them (this is part of a wider thing where a mob of locals try to fight back against the Kryptonians and inspire Clark to realise that yes, this world is worth fighting for); Zod kills Jonathan and mockingly asks "Now you've lost two fathers, Kal-El - is this really worthwhile?" Clark growls "YES" and kicks Zod's ass.

      "By destroying Krypton?!"

I would have fixed this movie by firing the color blind costumer, Superman doesn't wear dark blue, hiring John Williams to do the score including the iconic Superman theme, firing the casting directors or slamming copies of The Flash, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman down saying "Find me THESE people!" (or is that B v S?), making Pa Kent NOT be an asshole, maybe have him give the speech, "There's one thing I do know Clark and that's that you are here for a purpose!" Clark should have saved Pa. That would have really given him the impetus to leave home. I wouldn't have Clark go to some rando preacher, but go to Jor-El, he gives the Brando speech and tells Kal that if Zod is allowed to stay, he will try to conquer Earth and enslave and kill the people. Write that script so that Kal feels that he is Clark, from Kansas, Earth is his home and he'll defend it. Jor-El tells Kal how to send the ship back to the Phantom Zone, before it even touches down on Earth. Kal tells the Kryptonians Earth is under his protection, to leave the Solar System. A super-fight ensues on the dark side of the moon, Clark "flees" only to go to the ISS which is holding his pod in it's robotic arm. He smiles and waves to the astronauts, activates the pod throwns it at Zod's ship and they are gone. BvS was a mistake of a movie and never should have been made, the right context was never there for that movie, Superman saw Batman kill, he felt Batman try to kill him, he would have grabbed him by the cape and dropped him from a mile up! Fight Over!

    • @zhengyingli
      @zhengyingli 5 лет назад +2

      "Superman doesn't wear dark blue"
Superman wore dark blue in the 40's Fleischer Superman shorts.
"maybe have him give the speech, "There's one thing I do know Clark and that's that you are here for a purpose!""
Jonathan did give that speech in Man of Steel: "And I don’t blame you, son. It’d be a huge burden for anyone to bare, but you’re not just anyone, Clark. And I have to believe that you were…that you were sent here for a reason. All these changes that you’re going through, one day…one day you’re gonna think of them as a blessing. And when that day comes, you’re gonna have to make a choice. A choice of whether to stand proud in front of the human race or not. Somewhere out there you…you have another father too who gave you another name. And he sent you here for a reason, Clark. And even if it take you the rest of your life, you owe it to yourself to find out what that reason is."
"I wouldn't have Clark go to some rando preacher, but go to Jor-El."
Clark doesn't trust Jor-El after Zod's message. What are Clark's first words to Jor-El when he sees him on Zod's ship?
"Is it true what Zod said about the Codex?" Not, "Thanks" but "Can I trust you?"
Any way you color or interpret it, Jor-El was an extremist and he was wrong. All Clark has is Jor-El's word and that's immediately suspect and undone the instant Zod conveniently shows up just days after Jor-El says there are no Kryptonians left. Kryptonians showing up and threatening the Earth right after Clark meets his first Kryptonian completely shatters Jor-El's credibility. For all Clark knows, Jor-El was straight up lying. Or Jor-El is a complete loon, crazy enough to make such insane claims. Even if Jor-El is just mistaken, by his own admission, he refused to save himself, his wife-mother-of-his-child, and others just so Clark could be raised ideologically pure of Krypton.
Jor-El commands a star ship filled with robots capable of restraining and hurting Clark. For all Clark knows, going to Jor-El means getting restrained and shot into the stars again as this extremist abandons yet another planet. That's the common sense view. Going back to the ship would be the point in other stories where someone unwisely confronts and accuses whodunnit and, of course, meets an unfortunate demise. Importing your knowledge of Jor-El's trustworthiness is non-critical thinking. Clark has no way to know what you do.
That said... even if Clark trusts Jor-El and bears him genuine affection, he wouldn't go to him for the exact same reasons he doesn't go to Martha. Clark wasn't raised to war. To him, the choice is whether to surrender or not. He's not planning or staging some sort of one-man-army-suicide-mission against Zod, what farmer would? With those options, it would be utterly callous, heartless, and inhuman to shift the burden of that moral decision onto his mother or his father. Given those two options, it's either asking a parent to tell their child to condemn himself... or asking the parent to deny the world and force Clark to defy them. Jor-El had already abandoned Krypton for the sake of Kal-El, if he demanded Clark save himself, there's no value in that input, moreover with a star ship and robots, Jor might be able to compel Clark to do it.
"He smiles and waves to the astronauts, activates the pod throwns it at Zod's ship and they are gone."
That wouldn't have worked because the Phantom drive inside Zod's ship needed to be active, which it was not in space.
You need to watch the movie again. The facts aren't on your side.

I love the concept, and definately agree that there are improvements to be had, but some parts of the story in the movie I found to be better. This creates a better timeline, and most of the characters get a more consistent tone, but I particularly found that Zod would be downgraded. Zod's motivation in the movie I found to be better, and the planet's undoing due to their systematic ways is more interesting. This also leaves out the final fight, even though it makes Superman more vulnerable. I noticed the same thing in the Batman vs Superman version, but unlike there, I think it would serve an important purpose.

There is a reason Zack started Superman out dark. Also, it's fine for Christopher Reeve's Superman to kill a person and feel no regret, but it's not fine for Henry Cavill's Superman to kill and completely regret it and even scream and cry. Because that's not hypocritical at all.

u screwed up from the top. krypton should have been revealed toward the end of the movie. clark should have had no idea where he is from. instead, that should have been the journey for all of us to discover. The goverment should have taken Clarks baby pod, so he's on a mission to find it out what the Gov know about him when the Government finds out how to switch it on accidentally sending a beacon beyond the stars that tells ONE Kryptonian Zod where he's from. This Kryptonian is a war criminal who has a pentient for wanting to rule with absolute power. Clark when seeing a new Kryptonian arrive on Earth, wants to know him, thinking he may possibly know of his history. He sees the all powerful alien Zod and at first Zod pretends he wants to help the world but then we realise his true goal. Become ruler. Then finally when Zod is near defeat, he offers to tell Supes where he's from, saying all the info of his origin, why he's here is contained within the ship. But Supes to ensure the safety of humanity sacrifices this knowledge to send Zod to the phantom Zone, (where Zod tried to send Supes after a big fight realising they were to invulnerable to physically beat eachother) forever losing his chance to discover his origin.
However a second strand of the movie is a Lex Corp spy who has broken into Government Star Labs discovering about Supes origin. He is the one who switches on Kal El's ship. He speaks to a hologram of Jor El who tells the employee his history. We find out right at the end of the movie this guy is a mole for none other than Lex Luthor. That's how the audience discovers Supes origin and we're teased Lex as villain.

    • @ThePeterBluth
      @ThePeterBluth 7 лет назад +1

True, but I thought about it a little more and I think if you show that his heroics are few and far between, you can establish that underneath a guy who doubts himself and doesn't buy into what his father is saying, there's potential. He wants to hide, but the person his parents raised can't do that. He would rather be left alone and, for the most part, is left alone, but the DNA of heroism is bubbling at the surface. When Zod and the others appear, that's when he makes the transition, knowing that his father was right and that he can't run away from the kind of man he is forever. I think that's the effect they're going for here. I hope I was clearer with that.

    • @MJfp6lx
      @MJfp6lx 7 лет назад +2

there's 0 transition into heroics. what are you talking about. Here he's raised by a guy who says let ppl die. Don't use ur powers but still helps him control the powers. Superman as as result is jerk who causes property damage and kills off people's livelihoods

Why did you try to make your own version of krypton's origin??? It's clearly stated, Zod ATTEMPTED a coup and failed, Kryptonians harvested the sun, as a race, it was the council's decision, AND THAT'S WHEN ZOD ATTEMPTED THE COUP. Like, were you even paying attention to the movie? Yes, i get it, it's your "streamlined" version but Krypton's origin story DOESN'T NEED ANY CHANGES. Also, Jor El wouldn't try to overthrow Zod, let alone lead a rebel force because HE'S A SCIENTIST BY DEFAULT. Being involved with science is HARDWIRED in his genome, his "BIOS" if you will, his ROM, his circuitry is made to do SCIENCE. He wouldn't lead a rebellion or even a small task force against Zod because he wouldn't be able to think as a leader or behave as one, and he wouldn't have any motivation towards that goal. Your version of the story doesn't work because you don't take into account the actual story, you'd have to change core elements of the lore. Now, why the fuck do you wanna change Clark's growing up? His "father" didn't want him to do what he can do because, reasons and it works fine. Why do you have to "fix" it? Why must you change shit?
Also, about Superman of old compared to modern day Superman. SUPERMAN STARTED OUT AS AN AMERICAN SYMBOL OF PATRIOTISM.. He was literally saying he fights for Truth, Justice and the American way... LIKE, DO YOU EVEN LOOK UP YOUR SHIT BEFORE YOU CRITICIZE? A Kryptonian, fighting for the American way? A literal ALIEN being an American patriot? Seriously?
And now that DC actually decides to make a proper Superman origin movie and they redesign the character with MORE REALISTIC personality traits and characteristics, you say he's "cynical" and untrusting? HE WAS A REJECT FOR ALL HIS LIFE AND HAD TO CHANGE NAMES AND IDENTITIES ALL THE TIME. Wouldn't you be cynical and untrusting if you lived through that? Old Supes was supposed to be overwhelmingly optimistic and friendly BECAUSE HE WAS SUPPOSED TO REPRESENT AMERICA'S "PATRIOTISM" AND THE AMERICAN WAY! So don't compare the new actual Character of Kal El to an American patriot propaganda. For fuck's sake!!!
They made a character from scratch, they gave him an ACTUAL personality, shaped by his experiences and the events in his life, like all personalities are shaped, and threw out the propaganda that shaped supes since his creation. The movie is fine and the character development was long overdue and we finally got it and it was good. DEAL WITH IT!!!

No no it shouldn't, coming of age...noooo. We already seen that time and time and time and time again. I am so sick of origin stories. Every superhero reboot is ALWAYS a origin story. How many times do we have to see superman growing up in Kansas or peter parker loosing his uncle in spiderman etc etc. I love that Man of Steel decided to not go with that. Plus i liked the darker tone the movie took, it was unique and different and gave us a superman that had actually grown up in a human culture and had developed human emotions and had to wrestle with the good and the bad inside of himself to eventually become the superhero that the world needed. I think this is possibly the best iteration of superman that i have seen, the older campy superman was so boring and dull.

It wasn't "dark and gritty" it was realistic both from the world's perspective & Clark's inner struggle/decisions. This was a perfect origin movie for this incarnation of Superman that would've had a beautiful 3 part story arc (MoS, BvS, & JL 1&2) had WB not fucked it up.

Pretty pretentious of you as well to claim to be able to "fix" movies.
