Man of Steel was a lot of things but I wouldn't say very many people believe it was the Iron Man-esque Cinematic Universe starting success that DC hoped it would be.
And I believe there are bunch of different reasons why it didn't quite work. Story structure. Character development. Strange choices. But one thing is certain. It would take more than one small change to address them all.
In the Finale, we touch on what might be the most controversial moment in comic book movie history: The Snap.
Well...the other Snap.

The ending of a Superman origin film centering on a regular fist fight in a kryptonian ship is literally the best Superman idea I’ve ever heard
Right? One of the things I didn't enjoy about MoS was that the fights were all just a couple invincible dudes ineffectively slugging one another. Having the final fight take place in a Kryptonite-laced environment? Much better!
Superman: Earth One did it first
@@davindeptuck7905 Then it would’ve been fitting, since that’s one of the film’s primary inspirations.

@@robinsoncallou7937 I think lexcorp is slightly better, there's an added element of danger there
While that would've been cool and helps established a cinematic universe, it's better if the company was Lexcorp
Plus Luthor is from Smallville too.
Lexcorp works way better, both as a call-back to the Smallville TV-series, and because Lexcorp has a tendency to show up in Smallville in a lot of iteration of the Superman storyline. Either as part of some exploitation-project, as part of Lex backstory (when they want to connect him to Clark) or as because they have figured out that something from space landed there approximately when Superman was a kid and Lex want's to investigate.

Thank you for explaining exactly why killing Jimmy Olsen was one of the biggest mistakes in this franchise. I've never been able to properly put it into words myself other than "Clark needs a friend other than Lois."
Also more conclusive proof the Snyder hates the Superman mythos because he thinks he's too cool for Superheroes. Snyder is a repressed nerd closet case who wants to be a badass edgy bully. Of course he hates the depth of Superman's world including silly things like friends.

You've won me with the ending. General Zod would have completely wrecked Superman on a level playing field like the ship, and arguably outside as well given the fact you are using him as an origin villain. His power scale should have him be a mid to late stage solo film villain. But I am both suprised to see Zod won and glad it was the the Army dude who did the deed.

Just imagine a world, where directors and writers have full power in their movies, not greedy studios...
I think you could write masterful outlines for movies even without hindsight. Challenge yourself to write a pitch for Namor or a MCU version of the Fantastic Four. I'd watch that video!
I'm a bit curious if MCU will challenge themselves to try to one up DCEU and Aquaman's success and make the better fishman movie with a Namor feature or continue to ignore him
That action comics reference would have been amazing. It's so sad that this channel makes better decisions than most companies even though he has stated that he has the benefit of hindsight. Still I wanna see this guy actually direct or write one of these movies
The action comics cover is Superman shaking the criminals out of the car.

Gungan Boss What he means is a BvS set after his Man of Steel rewrite series
@@superrknight1858 So we all want a Nando universe
I think BvS's biggest problem is that it was two movies smooshed into one. The BvS stuff should have been separate from the Doomsday story.
that homage to action comics #1 made me so happy
yeah I think that would be a really cute bit of fan-service that's actually worked in well.
That would have been AMAZING
Not gonna lie, when you brought up using a photo harking back to Superman's first ever comic cover, I clapped. That's a great creative choice. You used an organic part of the story you're making to add a little fan service that brings it (the fan service) to life, rather than just sticking out like so many have tended to do. Very well thought out, clap deserved.
I always read Action Comics 1's cover as "Superman stopping some kind of robbery"... Mostly I guess because the guys scattering and running all kind of read as "the bad guys" in the picture. I feel like smashing the car is a little excessive (looks like they're in a desert or something) and there's still so many questions about it, but really that's all I got.
The only thing I would change is to move the "This man is not our enemy" moment to Zod's death scene. After Zod drops, Lois runs to Clark, still recovering from the fight. The general, though, keeps his pistol trained on Superman, saying "Right now I can stop you from ever posing a threat to the world and its people. What assurances do I have that you won't become like him?" gesturing to Zod.
Superman stands up, catching his breath, and faces the general with his arms down. "Only my word, general, but right now a lot of those people are injured and frightened. I can help them if you'll let me."
The general considers for a moment, then lowers his weapon with a look that says, "I'll be watching you."
I'd have another soldier present in the scene, so you can have the other soldier ask "what about the other alien?" and use the "this man is not our enemy" line as the response - by this point in the movie, Superman should have already made his case through his actions, and, as a generalisation, it's better to avoid long speeches and wordy arguments where possible.
Also, having Superman seriously wounded, but recover rapidly once he's carried out feels better than him being able to shrug off the wounds Zod used to incapacitate him.
@@rmsgrey - I'm thinking he doesn't so much shrug off his injuries as he does stand up despite his injuries.
As for why I'm making this "wordier", one problem I have with Man of Steel's implied politics is the way it frames the military as "humanity", as though the military would or should have the final say over the issue of Superman. Not that I'm necessarily anti-military, I just think it's odd that the military is the focal point for Superman being accepted by humanity while the actual _people_ of Earth are treated like a negligible non-issue. The re-write in these videos mostly alleviates that problem, but the "this man is not our enemy" scene is still a lingering vestige of US military propaganda. And I'm not using the word "propaganda" lightly, Man of Steel was subsidized by the Department of Defense for expressed purpose of depicting the US military in a positive light. So my goal with my little change was to do three things: frame the general's decision around the the immediate need for Superman's help (so that the general is forced to _begrudgingly_ accept him), depict Superman "posturing" as someone neither hostile to the military nor subservient to them, and to establish some potential lingering conflict between him and the general that could possibly be explored in later films (instead of framing the people and their government representatives as the anti-Superman element, which is what Batman v Superman does.)
@@f1nger605 EXACTLY. That the Snyder neo fascism creep. He's trying to be Nolan but he's Michael Bay.
My oh my, I always end up kind of sad knowing this is not the actual movie
I loved the rewrite but i take issue with the Zod conclusion. I agree that a spider man/new yorker moment is great to include, especially in a superman movie, but they cant land the final blow. That would be like if one of the new yorkers nailed goblin with a soda can, and he just fell off his glider and drowned. The point of that scene (at least in my opinion) is not that the people should be fighting alongside the superhero, but instead that a superhero can fight at their best with the peoples support behind him. Maybe the general should tackle zod off of clark so he has time to get back up and take him down, but the general shouldnt be the one to put down the movies big bad.
Would make sense if the general's shot isn't fatal, but it gives superman the opening to give Zod a proper stab with that sharp debris he picked up earlier.
I'm sorry but I laughed so hard at the part where you mentioned the green goblin being knocked off his glider by a soda can and drowning. I don't know why but that image is just too funny to me!
My idea is that maybe before Clark leaves the Fortress, Jor-El would tell him about a Phantom Zone projector and how to operate it in the scout ship. Superman tricks Zod into the ship not only to depower him but also to get rid of him. Superman gets beaten up but after a while he manages to get Zod into a position where he is sure to be hit with the projector. Zod lunges at Clark and he activates it, sending Zod back into the Phantom Zone. Zod swears he'll return as Lois and the general arrives on scene to witness the event. This way, we don't have an unsatisfying scene where Superman didn't overcome Zod's ideals. We would have a scene where Superman does outdo Zod and uses his head to do it. The general asks Superman what happened to Zod and he explains. The movie proceeds as Nando suggests after.
@@akaneriyun4774 this!
15:05 I love how you called him by his House of Cards character instead of who he played in this film
What Nolan originally said was the best ending. He suggested that Zod was sent to the negative zone. No killing. Perfect.
9:58 since we know Lex can create doomsday out of krytonian stuff then surely lex can create superboy with those krytonian babies
Damien reign of the supermen was such a missed opportunity and would have been a better justice league origin/darkseid introduction

Thanos: Exactly. **snap**
I'm just mad now. Just so mad we didn't get a movie like this. :(
Wow. "Renovation courtesy of LexCorp". BOOM. Mic drop. Surreal.
Is it weird I'm more excited for these than the actual films themselves? I love you so much man
I like the post credits. I prefer Clark being the one to end Zod, though. IMO, the biggest thing the final battle got wrong was showing stakes. Why "the snap" was necessary. Clark should have been losing. Badly.
When they are fighting I would add Zod mentioning that he has been near a yellow sun before and that he knows how to use the his powers. I feel that it would add more of a challenge for Superman
Fantastic way to finish this up! I had reached out to you on Patreon to share some of my ideas for a rewrite I had been working on for this once you had finished, and now that you did, and you didn't use my idea for your rewrite, I wanted to share it here. It basically deals with the motivation of Zod, and why I think it's important to add a slight amount of sympathy to the villain.
So we are told that Kryptonians are engineered from birth to fit specific roles, and Zod is essentially a warrior, but more importantly, a protector of Krypton. When Krypton is going to be destroyed, his rebellion against the Kryptonian leadership makes sense - they are responsible for the planets destruction in a way that he could do nothing about. His purpose was circumvented.
After he is released from the phantom zone, Krypton is long dead and he no longer has a purpose, until he is alerted to the presence of Kal on Earth. So he and his group of former prisoners go to Earth and discover that Kal holds the secret to remake Krypton, and Zod now has a purpose again. This is where the change comes. Instead of making Zod someone evil who is willing to destroy Earth because it's here and he can't be bothered to rebuild Krypton elsewhere, make it so that Earth is the only place where he could possibly rebuild Krypton. Have a discussion with Kal and perhaps a few of Earth's leaders where the question is asked, "Why not go to another star system to rebuild Krypton, or perhaps utilize Mars or maybe Venus?" The answer would be that in order to terraform whatever planet they use into a new Krypton, it needs to have enough organic compounds that can be utilized. It needs to already have life. Mars and Venus aren't suitable to be terraformed by the world engine because they lack the necessary compounds, and they don't have either the fuel or necessary star charts available to find another host planet. The one area where Zod might have a choice, how he fulfills his purpose, is taken away. Earth is the only option available to him, and he is going to take it - because he doesn't have a choice to not act.
As always, another fantastic video Nando!
Ooh that's a great idea. It actually explains why Zod us so fixated on Earth
Maybe the question is retorical BUT:
In the first Action Comics, Superman is smashing that car because it belongs to a group of criminals he is chasing (the criminals being the guys screaming). He takes the car and shakes it to make the guys come out and destroys the car.
Those comics are REAAAALLLY interesnting and I recommend them
Ok.
If only Nando could travel back in time and managed to get accepted as the screenwriter of the film. The DCEU would not have had a bad start.
I am not going to lie, I really love the original Man of Steel movie. Even after watching these rewrites I still hold that movie close to my heart. Despite that, I absolutely think that your changes would make for an even better movie. I feel like I - and many others - would love your version wayyy more. Wow. I always tear up at the emotional parts of your re- writes. You're a gifted storyteller and you really understand characters motivations. This is my favorite superhero movie. I constantly defend it when people hate on it. You have allowed me to see parts that could have been improved upon and made slight tweaks that make this story even more meaningful, true to character and still getting Snyder's vision of Superman accomplished. I always say after I watch one of your videos, thanks.
As a Superman fan, this re write made me cry tears of joy! Everything is on point. I wish some executive could see this and make at least an animated movie out of it.
Thank you for making this! Great channel!
Hollywood is seriously missing out on a great mind. Hope you get your time to shine man cause you deserve it. This entire rewrite is fantastic.
I've seen a popular fan theory for a way to bring Jimmy back would be to explain the CIA agent as just using Jimmy's press credentials and posing as him as a way to get access to the meeting.
It's interesting that homages to Action Comics #1's cover so often are Superman saving someone. That cover is him smashing up a car against some rocks. Specifically, the car of some gangsters (who had kidnapped Lois), who he has just shaken out of the thing (they're the ones running away on the cover). It's taken directly from his story in the comic itself, just a panel taken from there and also used as a cover. Maybe part of confusion is that, since it wasn't meant to be a cover when first drawn, Joe Shuster didn't think to make it self-explanatory, working better in the context of the story, where the convention of the day was to have a text box accompany a panel to describe what's happening (I'd say they forgot "show, don't tell", but this is more of a "tell while showing" redundancy).
I would love to know what Snyder thinks of your rewrite. Well, David Goyer too. WB/DC needs a guy like you going over the screenplays to tell the writers what they need to change before rolling the camera.
Dude. You’ve nailed it. I have loved all four of these videos and was actually hoping you’d surprise us with an expected part five. Your story really does feel like it had a ton of thought put into it while the theatrical release felt like it was either rushed, or, as you reference in the first one, there were just too many cooks in the kitchen as mandated by corporate. Your channel is awesome. Keep it up, Brotha.

Always amazing and so punctual. Thanks to give us the Supes we wanted! And yeah the liquid silver robot was definetly overwhelming and so empty... just another gray big monster. We will not feel the missing of it. As I said before, everytime I watch your rewrites, it is like I'm back in the movie theatre and I leave fully satisfied! Thanks Nando!
you should do some sort of rewrite for Kingsman 2, not necessarily a multi part series but I feel like if it were reworked (maybe without a cure for being shot in the head) it could've been a lot better
Would you ever consider doing a Batman v. Superman rewrite following up your rewrite of Man of Steel? Then you could tie it to your justice league and make your own “rewritten” universe.
Nando... On some parallel Earth that is not-so-different from our own, there is a version of you making a video like this one because this rewrite was the actual movie on that Earth. Only if what happened in Man of Steel occurred up till that final battle where Zod dies because a human shot him in the chest, then the Alternate Nando would be posting their own fix to that particular choice.
Therefore it is not hard to argue that on several if not all parallel Earths, each different Nando would be doing their own rewrites to movies you have covered where they try to fix or do their own take on the movies themselves if they followed the stories and choices your current self has made.
I LOVE that you found a way for Superman to stop Zod without killing him that fits into the movie having an arc where he is making decisions based on what he wants rather than doing what people tell him to.
The car catch cover homage gave me the "this is awesome" goosebumps.
FYI for anyone who doesn't know. Kryptonite wasn't introduced into the Superman lore until the radio serials. So, Nando's comment about the rock on the cover of Action Comics no.1 possibly being Kryptonite is incorrect.
Bonus fact. Superman was first given flight in the Fleischer animated shorts.
I don't think he ACTUALLY thought it was kryptonite; I took that comment as basically him wondering, if Superman was trying to break through that rock (which is one of the things it looks like he could be doing), why wouldn't he just punch it instead of using a car as a battering ram.
@@elsie8757 At that point, Superman was strong, but not nearly as powerful as he's become. So punching the rock might not have gone well for this Superman.
I absolutely love the way Michael Shannon delivers that "ON A FARM?!" line! Glad it made the cut. Great rewrite as always Nando.
Why don’t they just hire you as a script doctor already? Are you applying anywhere?
Come on, Nando! You know I have to sleep, right? Why are you doing this to me?
we just need a full 'Nando cinematic universe' where you do your own version of this entire film series
Videos by you are the only ones I watch without question or distraction as soon as they come out
These 4 videos were phenomenal, and I think you really captured the essence of Superman with this origin, and a Superman origin movie that has a fist fight in a Kryptonian ship as it's final battle is the most genius thing I've ever heard of, amazing job
I would to see a rewrite of Dragon Ball Evolution
It's called Dragon Ball Path to Power. Not exactly the same plot, but it's a pretty fun watch if you want Dragon Ball in an hour. Have fun
That movie is beyond fixing and rewriting, just leave it and forget it
Is there a reason why Zod couldn't take the ship to Mars and make Krypton there? I mean the ship was going to terraform Earth anyways so couldn't it do it to Mars or Venus? I mean I know both of those planets are inhospitable but that's the point of terraforming the planet right?
The Martians, maybe?
It doesn't matter. He would still have to deal with earth. Especially since earthlings are likely to see most of the solar system as theirs. And also he would never have much power over his people with earth near by constantly picking their noses in his business.
A simple explanatory line could probably rectify that. Still, worth wondering about.
Also, since Clark draws strength from the sun, wouldn't Mars be a much better option considering its location relative to the sun?
Wasn't it earth's atmosphere not the yellow sun that empowers Clark...
I think I said this on your other rewrite videos for MoS, but seriously... MASTERFUL job. Man, that's just quality writing. WB really needs you on Superman.
Also he could have prevented the snap 1 by putting his hand on his eyes 2 flying away with him 3 quickly flying and saving the people 4 just not let zod move his head (i think two hands are stronger than a neck)
okay but then what. You tell me: how else does that fight possibly end?
Well, the post credit scene caughtme off guard. Some part of me thought Wayne Enterprises was behind the repairs (leading to BvS, which I assume would be your next rewrite).
Watching your videos makes me wanna see the rewritten version of those movies on screen. You're awesome.
Am I the only one that wants Nando to make another channel called Nando V games where he rewrites video game stories like the one in sonic forces which had a lot of untapped potential?
Just read the comic. It explains why he is doing that
Anyway

Snyder being obsessed with recreating scenes from DKR I would have loved to have seen AC#1 recreated in live action (better then when Superman Returns tried it)
That infinty gauntlet looks amazing! And I suppose the one on the left looks nice too...

That shout out to Action Comics #1 made me tear up Nando. Lex Corp easter egg was great as well.
I'm already fully invested in the whole rewrite, but extra points to you for the Lucky Number Slevin reference.
I know it wasn't intentional but knowing Swanwick’s true identity from the Snyder cut makes him stepping in to kill Zod even cooler for this universe.
These rewrites of yours are amazing!
But, I can't help but wonder how well you'd do on an original script.

love the back and forths between clark and lois/jimmy at the end!
They said it couldn't be done, but you've done it! This is just excellent. I honestly believe that with this script (and a more sensible color palette) Zack Snyder could have made a wonderful Superman movie that would have become a classic.
I've already said this in previous comments, but GET THIS MAN A TIME MACHINE!!!
Ok so since we may never get a MOS sequel I think you should do it

I watched all four of these videos and now I'm just sad that this wasn't the actual movie... Awesome job.
I was wondering how this rewrite ties-in with your other rewrite in 'Batman V Superman' with Bizarro as the villain. Or is this meant to be a stand-alone movie that will never connect with with BVS.
He basically said "There is no such thing as a nando cinematic universe." So doesn't connect.
Dude, I love these additions. This would've been a much better movie.
If this version was the actual movie, it would probably be one of my favorite superhero movies hands down
It's too bad you actually had Zod die. Because wouldn't he start healing the moment his body left the atmosphere of his ship?
Personally... I'd have had Zod hit the ground in utter pain. A pain he expresses as more of a failure to his people.
Since the ship can obviously control the atmosphere in different parts of the ship, Superman says to Zod; "I'm not like you, I won't let you die either.' Superman has the key and calls upon the hologram of his father. Superman asks if it's possible to heal Zod, but keep him contained?
The ship, on limited power, and is flying to an unknown location.
After some unknown time has passed, we see Zod healed, but sitting trapped within the selected atmospheric area that renders him "normal".
As Zod raises his head to look forward, he sees Jor-El looking back at him with a small smile.
This way, I'd have saved Zod for a future movie.
Thoughts?
Old but beautiful
Sounds really decent. Than Lex could free Zod in the future and use him in some way, something like that.
Zod: Noooooooooooo!!!!!!

I guess whenever I wanna watch Man of Steel, I'll come to watch Nando's rewrite! Great work.
This is pure genius! How you arrived at the classic picture is fantastic! I need to support you on patreon, I always look forward to your videos!
This has been by far the most thorough rewrite you've done...and I don't think it's over yet. I think showing this much of superman saving people and stopping the destruction changes batman's motivations in BVS. And it's clear you want to create a more meaningful arc for Jimmy Olsen. You should just turn this into the start of an outright DCEU rewrite.
Even though I really liked 'Man of Steel', I love your version! Please go back in time and give this treatment to Zack and WB!! I would have loved to see this on the big screen!
I hate just how much better your rewrites are than the actual movies
This was a great finish to the rewrite, thanks. :)
Love the Lucky Number Slevin reference!! Such a great movie!
