  • The most obvious way to expand the interior size of any camper would be to throw in a couple of slide outs, but since these mechanisms are quite pricey, we usually see them on gigantic luxury models that already have plenty of space inside. Luckily, this isn’t always the case and, in this episode, we gathered a lineup of the smallest trailers with slide outs that make this fun feature accessible even to the owners of the most compact towing vehicles.

    #1 Mobi Lodge Cotinental and Liberty: mobilodge.com/2020-mobi-lodge-liberty
    mobilodge.com/2020-mobi-lodge-with-continental-spec
    Mobi Lodge is a South African family operated manufacturer that introduces a new concept of traditional small caravans, by maximizing the size of your base camp to the fullest. Their current 15 ft flagship, Continental, has a large slide out.
    #2 Forest River R-Pod Travel Trailer: forestriverinc.com/rvs/travel-trailers/r-pod?RegionSelected=1
    The major reason to consider the R-Pod travel trailer family from the Indiana-based Forest River is the ultra-wide variety floorplans developed for the model. Including dealers-specific builds, there are 2 base and 11 expandable models, with the latter featuring a single slideout each.
    #3 KZ Sportsmen Classic 181BH: kz-rv.com/products/sportsmen-classic-travel-trailers/photos.html#181BH-photos
    Currently a part of Thor’s Industries, KZ RV has been in business for almost 50 years, offering a wide selection of travel trailers, fifth wheels, and toy haulers. The Classic is the smallest and the lightest model in the company’s range, while its 181BH floorplan is probably the most versatile trailer in the mix.
    #4 LANCE 1475S & 1575 Travel Trailer: lancecamper.com/travel-trailers/1475/ / lancecamper.com/travel-trailers/1575/gallery/
    Established in 1965, the California Lance Camper is known for making eco-friendly campers, using the industry’s latest technologies, such as Azdel and Lite-Ply. However, if you are looking for the most compact trailers from the brand with decent interior room, the 1475 S and 1575 models are the way to go.
    #5 Jayco Hummingbird: jayco.com/tools/archive/2020-hummingbird/
    The Hummingbird range of travel trailers consists of five models, out of which 3 come featuring a side slideout and measuring almost 20 feet in length. Each is constructed on a Norco frame and is equipped with an American-made Dexter single axle with rubber-torsion suspension.
    #6 BeauEr X: beauer.fr/en/?lang=fr
    If other trailers from this lineup only expand their premises via mechanically controlled body extensions, the French Beaur 3X is basically a one-piece slide out all on its own. This caravan previews how the future Moon and Mars colonies.
    #7 Coachmen Catalina Summit Series 7 coachmenrv.com/travel-trailers/catalina-summit-series-7/172BHS/4640#m-Gallery
    Yet another RV manufacturer from under the Forest River Inc umbrella, Coachmen, rarely goes small with their campers. Within their roster, the 20 feet Catalina Summit Series 7 is the smallest model to feature a slide out.
    #8 Hitch Hotel Traveler: hitchhotel.com/
    Hitch Hotel Traveler is an expandable travel trailer with two wheels, that measures less than 39 inches wide when folded. The Traveler features a single slideout, that effectively doubles its interior room, allowing it to sleep two.

    Would you consider a smaller trailer equipped with a slide-out or should this space-increasing technology be reserved to larger, higher priced campers?

    • @rickstokes2239
      @rickstokes2239 3 года назад +7

      I’ve been hoping smaller campers would become more accommodating with these types of feature. Don’t like dealing with the bulk and maintenance of larger campers or care to own a truck just to pull it.

    • @stevenbathurst7027
      @stevenbathurst7027 3 года назад +2

      You can only go so small, I don’t like wet baths, too hard to clean.you need a decent fridge for food storage, a small kitchen but most of all fresh water storage, gray and black. The smaller you go the less storage of your liquids.. I like to travel and boondock and a small trailer would not be practical.

    • @Erin-Thor
      @Erin-Thor 3 года назад +2

      Yes! But you need to warn people about these ripple sided trailers. Manufacturers used that type of siding because it’s cheap, and buyers don’t know the downside. The downside is it’s almost impossible to seal, most have 18” strips, and the seams, as well as the corner seams are literally impossible to seal. Add that the cheaper trailers have wood frames and wood rots, and you see the problem. If you understand that driving at highway speeds in the rain is like taking a pressure washer to your trailer, water WILL find a way in, either through the uneven corners or through the side slat seams. Your wood frame will rot, but not in the first year, that’ll happen in 2-4 years when your warranty has expired.

    • @rickstokes2239
      @rickstokes2239 3 года назад +2

      @@Erin-Thor While true that some cheaper ones might have rippled siding, many now have solid fiberglass or Aluminum bodies. But even for rippled siding, the materials being used inside are no longer traditional wood, but lighter and stronger materials that don’t decay.

    • @Erin-Thor
      @Erin-Thor 3 года назад

      @@rickstokes2239 - Yes, the siding has pluses but the frames are wood, and you cannot seal the seams. Drive in the rain and the clock starts to their death. They are literally disposable campers that cost $25 grand.

    We have truly enjoyed 18TO with large slide out. Forest River builds poorly but no major problems yet. The trailer pulls very well with Tundra, as home is northern California mountains. I wanted it small for off road camping and so it works excellent and most camp sites are 20' or less in mountain. We have added lots extra power and gas. It's an awsome floor plan for two people and off road camping...
    Be safe and drive careful, have fun!

    I've had slides on a 28' 5th wheel. Did not like them; they were just one more thing to maintain and some campsites were just too small to allow them to fully extend. I now have an 18.5' Springdale mini with no slides. It has more than enough room for two adults and two dogs and is by far, my favorite camper!

    I like the HR slide out just because it seems much more practice for me. I can’t travel for long because of my job and prefer to be out in nature when I can. Hotels are ok but can get really expensive. All I want is somewhere to sleep where I feel more secure about where in sleeping in, not a tent. Especially when traveling alone. And it’s light weight is something my sedan can pull!! This will get a lot of younger people wanting to go out and camp.

    If you graphed the cost of the camper, what you get for the money, and who can afford it, you should realize most of these campers are a mistake.
    Someone that needs to live in it probably can’t afford it, and if he could afford it then the tiny amenities are inconvenient. A rich person can afford it but will use it 4 times a year.
    The tiny trailer for 6k is affordable for most but no standing room or bathroom.
    In the end expensive or new campers are for those who can afford them and mostly for recreation. The talk about practicality of new campers should reflect that.

    I'm looking at all the SMALLEST trailers. Nothing is a gimmick now days. What you should ask your subscribers is, how many of you are considering living in one of these? We are officially living in an age where people are turning to these for housing. So many can't afford standard housing. I hate it, but these are easier to deal with than a TINY HOUSE. That's something we need to change, as a PEOPLE a collective. The US has thousands on the street. & Millions on social security, who payed in all their lives. Who are now too disabled or too old to live on the street. But certainly can't afford the rents in most of our states. So I'll take all the GIMMICKS I can get. But what every city really needs to do is open their eyes & hearts to the zoning laws, allowing TINY HOUSE, including these, communities..
