In this video, we’re going to talk about the problems with eating kale.
There are a lot of really amazing benefits of kale, such as:
• It has potential anti-cancer effects
• It has potential anti-estrogenic effects
• It can help clean up the liver
• It’s loaded with nutrients
But, there can also be a few problems with eating kale for some people.
1. It can deplete iodine (sea kelp may help counter this issue)
2. It can have too much fiber (try other vegetables) *if you’re bloated because of too much fiber, it can be difficult to lose weight.

I have had 4-5 cups of raw kale for lunch everyday, for 4 weeks. Only side effect was green turds.
Big Bird13
Don’t blame the kale 🥬 birds tend to do that 🤣

Thank You
Right?
I thought I'd stumbled upon a Leprechaun's outhouse...
😂😂😂😂
I ate 2 big bunches of kale 🥬 in two days but I dried in oven for 35 min in minimum heat . I put olive oil and pepper.
Best Crunchy snacks ever I try.
@Free My Grandma I’m not too much fan of microwave for myself.
I heard microwave change molecular structure of food and is not going to have same effect in body like dry food in oven.
That leaves little pieces of green specks all over my teeth😉
Crunchy sure, literally the only way to enjoy kale - yes. The best? Dude.
@@aleftav4691 it does and so does Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is microwaves.

Try following Dr Ken Berry advice. Don`t be surprised if in time all will be cured!
I've been eating kale for a week (So far). It's very delicious and it doesn't upset my stomach when I cook it or juice it.
You're lucky. I bet you're used to eating greens ?
Kale...... delicious ????? lol ok
@@sarahX.. Exactly... I'm definitely not taking that comment seriously
@@sarahX.. grocery store kale is gross. But the kale I’m growing in my garden this year is amazing. I thought I hated kale too LOL.
@box2bliss927 how do you grow it....
WHAT IN GOD'S NAME SHOULD I EAT TO BE HEALTHY? Eliminated all the conventional meat and dairy, replaced them with organic staff. Eliminated all the grains and sugar, replaced them with green leafy vegetables. I have been chewing spinach and in one of your videos you said it contains oxalate, which causes kidney stones. Fine, switched over to Kale and now this video ...
I have been struggling with acne for many years and I know only one thing that does not cause the break outs - WATER. Don't take me wrong, I don't mind drinking water but you know ... I need some food as well. I am 22 years of age, don't drink alcohol, don't smoke, swim, practice judo, workout. I AM A HUMAN BEING FOR GOD'S SAKE AND I WANT TO EAT LIKE ONE AND STAY HEALTHY.
LOL, not sure if you are serious but I am SO feeling you with this comment. I'm like GEEZ I don't know what to eat anymore or where to even start with all the different info out here. Don't get me wrong I do enjoy the shared info but it can become overwhelming for a beginner like me who is trying to start a healthy lifestyle regime. I'm just saying lol
He is clueless. Not a nutritionist, just a chiropractor.
No Name Well, I personally don't believe he's clueless because I don't know the time and energy he puts in studying the info shared:). Him being a Chiropractor doesn't eliminate his knowledge and intelligence on knowing what he knows regarding health and nutrition :). I'm sure he have helped alot of people. :)
There is no simple answer to healthy eating.. whatever you eat there will be healthy and unhealthy effects on your body. You can change this ratio by changing your diet. However it's impossible to completely eliminate unhealthy effects. So stop worrying too much. Just keep your diet as healthy as possible.
Alex Thanks!!!!
I find removing the stalks, then squeezing some lemon juice, few drops of Olive oil, and a tiny sprinkling of salt, then gently massaging fresh kale before eating makes it much easier to digest...it takes seconds to steam. Perfect!
I have been removing the stalks too and guess what ? My problems with it are solved!
@@otaviomoraes9941 So much Oxalates in stalks.
Eat it at it's organic form
Spring mix with baby spinach and a few kale leaves...Top with MCT oil, pink salt, grated cheese, red wine vinegar and a bit of your favorite dressing. Maybe add some grilled shrimp? Bacon? ...or grilled chicken?

I've started using my juicer again recently in order to get more potassium whilst avoiding too much fibre. A combination of cucumber, celery or kale, lemon and a little ginger makes a quite pleasant start to the day (but not every day!).
Dr. Berg by far is the most thorough, easy to understand medical and keto expert on the net. His presentations are short enough and easy enough to take notes on. I am benefiting from his videos so much ! He has over 2,000 on RUclips. I have been recommending him to my friends and loved ones. He's a NATIONAL TREASURE.
THANK YOU !
Yes. He tells the truth and does his research and ADMITS when he's said something wrong which almost no one does nowadays.
I agree! His wisdom has changed my life. He has me eating 7 - 8 cups of salad every day now.
There is alot of praise.. Are you his relative or promoter ?
Every time I consume kale I notice my head is clear. I like it.
Yep, I am one of the 20% who can't digest kale. I was on a kale kick last summer and made a juice of kale, carrot, ganny smith apple, fennel and ginger. Well after 4 days of stomach indigestion I learned my lesson. No kale for me. I learned that kale is in the cruciferous family which I can't digest any of them as well. I take a probiotic but nothing was going to digest that kale.
I make my green shake with organic powdered wheatgrass juice. I use spinach in my quiche recipe and in salads, but No kale!
Extreme of anything is bad!!!
This is why I only eat a hand full of portion of kale
Wow Doc, I had a few kale shakes and got constipation... Thank you so much, I won't overdo it anymore.
Me too!!!! Wow!!!
Kale actually helped relieve my constipation tremendously. I cook it fresh with half a teaspoon of olive oil, hymalyan sea salt and pepper. Just fry it for a 3-4 mins so it keeps its crunch and its lovely
You can eat it raw too right? No problem?
Kale is super healthy but if you are not used to a rich fibre food I would introduce it first in small amounts. Not only kale but all sorts of green leafy vegetables, broccoli, beets, beans lentils etc… as your gut flora adapts to the higher fibre content you’ll feel less bloated. :) just be persistent and always eat in small amount all types of vegetables and as you get used to it you can increase the quantity. :)
@@eliaspkay oh yes. You can make smoothies out of kale or eat it raw in salad. But because the leaf is a bit harder some people might not like it much. You can steam it to make it more tender.
It's bitter as he'll raw
@@coryvincun5424 there are plenty of other vegetables. If you don’t like the taste of the kale just go for something else. I mean kale is healthy but it’s not the only healthy food.
Now I know why I’m getting constipated with kale. Thanks your videos are so helpful
Great information Dr Berg! This happened to me, added loads of kale to a smoothie and two hours later I was so bloated. I’m going back to spinach, I might try adding kale gradually because of the great benefits! thank you 😊
I started eating it recently. A few days ago I "discovered" kale chips and I ate a lot. It actaully had the opposite effect of constipation in me. Thanx for one more great video by the way.
Same with me
One the best way to fix those two problems is to steam it rather than eating it raw. Especially if it is affecting your thyroid.
Cycle between spinach, collard, kale, lettuce, parsley and other green leaves.
I always steam a bit and it even tastes better.
Ben Hayat I was hoping not to hear that. I'm a trucker trying to eat raw healthy non refrigerated foods. Do you have any advice for me sir?
Bleedinggums roberts;
Raw kale may not affect everyone the same way.Try it with small amount to start with. IT IS the best green vegie with lots of minerals, vitamins and even protein. So, I'd not brush it off.
Or you can use Swiss chard and Spinach. These are my main vegies.
when you are home, work up to more raw. you can always pack a cooler with salads and juices, especially if you have an electric one you can plug into in your truck. you can juice and freeze, then put in cooler and will last a few days at least. otherwise, snacks like raw nuts and seed that have been soaked and dehydrated are good. takes prep, but worth the effort. try to focus on small changes otherwise you get overloaded. and stay hydrated!
I have hashimoto so kale isn't good for me?
I blend about 3 cups of leafy greens in my smoothie and I rotate them each week...but I always like them mixed so I will get different varieties each week....this is my favorite 1st meal with my Avocado and blueberries....creamy delish!!!
been eating 4 cups of kale for almost a week, feel great!
Mix it up and eat other greens as well.
You sill keeping it up or did you, give up yet.
I stopped this 1.5 years ago, i do raw foods now.
@@ChristIsLord229 that's awesome

Thanks bro, been eating Kale everyday for three months straight. And have had issues sleeping because of extreme bloating and constipation. Gonna stop eating Kale now and see if it helps.
Rotate your vegetables, variety is always good. Juicing them is also help full, save the fibers in the freezer to make soup with, or add when making bread, looks rather interesting with little bits of green and carrot bits as well. 🍞🍞🍞🥖🥖🥯
Only the juice.
You're obviously not chewing your cud properly, yes ?

Marten Dekker Fiber is a "bulking" agent in the bowels...so yes too much can cause constipation...is can cause hyperkalemia which a symptom is constipation (even impaction if severe) I know it sounds counterintuitive...it did to me too b4 nursing school.
Kale used to just be the garnish we'd decorate the buffet with back in the day...
Yes yes. We need some greenery on the scenery
😂 I always used to think they had to be fake
I find that cooking the greens in butter and olive oil and some ACV or balsamic helps a lot. I can’t consume a raw salad as easily.
My wife and I enjoy dicing garlic and onions and lightly cooking in olive oil, then adding fresh kale, a pinch of salt, and fresh cracked black pepper then cooking the kale just until the color brightens.
Marvelous side dish.
love kale.
I think moderation is the key.
My garden produces enough kale anymore I’m make kale bouquet arrangement centerpieces 🤪
That makes sense. I did feel constipated when I added kale to my morning shake. And I always thought constipation was because of a lack of fiber
That's diarrhea
You can get constipated from too much fibre for sure. In fact it can be the leading cause of constipation. If your having problems with your gut, make sure to thoroughly research the difference between soluble had insoluble fibre. 9 out of 10 GP's will just tell you "eat more fibre" without having a clue of what they are talking about. You need to speak to an expert for real advice or research your own. A GP is like your local mechanic. They can change your oil but you wouldn't trust them with your Rolls Royce. Your body is your Rolls Royce 😊
@@alexallen4138 most people treat their body like a lawn mower.
Very true, lol. I am learning.
Also, need to make sure you are drinking plenty of water. Can't just simply load up on fiber.
Yeah, fiber can actually makes things worse in some cases if you don't drink enough water.. like if you have chronic constipation and take lots of fiber, but don't get enough water.
Ive been smothering kale in hot butter. Makes it taste better, go down easier and I believe digest better.
I don't know if this is normal Dr Berg, but Kale gives me a massive headache. I have tried it over and over again both cooked or raw and it still gives the same results. A headache that lasts for days. Could it be that its too powerful for me. Chocolate does the same thing to me also.
I was fine with kale for slightly over a week. Then I started to get very nauseous drinking it. Perhaps it was oxylate overdose. The experience also put me off spinach, but I'm still fine with cabbage, broccoli, zucchini, etc. Herbs are more nutrient dense in that a lesser amount of herbs provides the same potassium as a larger amount of green vegetables.
There is nothing beneficial with vegetables, and the horrible taste as well as the things it does to destroy your digestive system are further proof of this.
what about the high levels of oxylates that kale ( and spinach) contain that are a problem to certain ( many ) people
Apparently kale is very low oxolate unlike spinach which is very high.
Kale is low oxylate
What is the problem with oxalates? I don't know if that is good for bad but I love spinach more than anything else.
"anti-cancer", "fixes the body"... bruh. People really need to learn to be more critical about buzzwords and phrases like this.
Tomorrow I was going to begin drinking lots of smoothies with kale in them. I'm so glad I watched this because I will now moderate the Kale drinking for some time as I have only eaten kale a few times in my life. Thanks Dr. Berg.
kale is a must.
i eat kale and baby spinch every day, those are my 2 go-to greens for smoothies.
i also use them in smoothies with other fruits like banans and blueberries to mask the taste. the spinach is OK, but the kale is to bitter alone.
i also use pure maple syrup and nuts and seeds, makes for a delicous and fatty meal with plenty of calories for the day.
1 smoothie per day thats all i eat.
doinig the 16:8 fast, sometimes 18,19,20,21, and 22 hours ill fast in a day. all depends on how i feel, however i do use a lot of herbs.
seamoss, kelp, bladderwrack, moringa, black seed, black seed oil, chlorella, spirulina, all of them everyday.
burdock root, dandelion root, stinging nettle leafs. great stuff.
Thanks Dr. Berg, your videos are short, simple, and sweet. You explain everything in a few minutes which is awesome. Very informative and helpful video. 🙏🏻 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Can u talk about greens that contains oxalates? Greens like Swiss chard are high in oxalates. For some this may cause problems. I've been looking into eating more edible weeds but many of them are high in oxalates. Because of this I find I can't consume much of them😞
Kale in a salad makes my stomach ache like being stabbed, tried it several times, I didn't like the taste. Tried baking it like chips, didn't taste good either. I'm hypothyroid, guess I'll stick with spinach, which I love. Thank you for posting this great information.

Dont believe everything you hear even from a doctor they just read a lot everyone with a pea brain knows greens are healthy if they are organic.
"you're"
Mr.Berg: as far as I know the cruciferous vegetables are full of iodine. It was an old mistake by someone many decades ago, and many ' specialists' just took over this info without controlling it in a lab.
I watch Dr. Berg’s videos every single day. I love them, they are just enjoyment
Since I deal with hypothyroidism and want to eat kale for fiber what did you say I should take I just want to make sure I heard you right
I will lose it seriously! Everyday something come up. I make a smoothie everyday with collard green, kale, flaxseed, apple, parsley, basil, mint, carrot and then afternoon i use hemp seed, chia seeds, avocado, garlic, and all those organic with almond or coconut milk and i don't know what to do anymore cause one day eat kale the next day eat spinach. Zeynep Busbee I think what your doing is awesome! I took a snap pic of it so I can copy you. 👍🏻 it’s basically all in moderation...I had this friend who I told that garlic is so good for you. Over the next month she ate so much garlic..I’m talking like 6-8 raw cloves a day! She was having massive stomach problems...she cut back to 1-3 cloves a WEEK and her skin is amazing and she feels great.
That all being said..I bought a pre packaged mixed greens on 2 different occasions in the last few weeks and I get Huge stomach ache. Something in it is bothering me..I don’t know what. It has a host of different greens. Think I’ll stick to spinach or kale.

I feel the same way. It’s like wow life was easier when I just ate whatever the heck I wanted
You should also point out that, like spinach, Kale is great in terms of phytonutrients . . . but it does contain oxalic acid, which in excessive amounts may cause kidneys stones, gout, rheumatoid arthritis. The key is to consume kale (here's that loaded word again) in "moderation"; don't over do it. Listen to your body (if you feel funny afterwards, cut back) . Also, lightly boiling, steaming or fermentation reduces the amount of oxalic acid.
Massage your kale before putting dressing on it--massaging the kale leaves breaks up the fiber in it and make it easier to eat and digest. Of course, remove and discard all the thick, hard stems.
ExtraordinaryLiving that’s hot
I’ve read claims that kale is mostly insoluble fibre, and that it’s wonderful nutrients can’t be taken up by the body because we can’t digest it anyway. ??
I like to eat the Southern Green mixtures that include spinach, turnips, and collard greens. My mom used to boil them to death until I'm sure there was no nutrients left in them, but I cook them in avocado oil until they just turn color.
I'm glad I watched this. I just cooked 2lbs of creamy kale (butter, garlic, onion, coconut milk, heavy cream, salt and nutmeg). Gotta switch up to creamy spinach next week. Thanks Dr. 😁
I just enjoy learning from your videos, Dr Berg.
Sadly I have had to cut spinach out of my diet due to kidney stones and high oxalates in spinach.
Thank you! Finally! could you also talk about how RAW kale vs. COOKED kale ALTERS THE THYROID NEGATIVELY?????
Can't do spinach. Histsmines. But choose romaine salads and kale but not daily. I serve kale lightly steamed. Found a nice source of frozen organic kale i use. Moderation works and variety of veges something different at altering meals

Spinach is very high in oxalate, which can indeed cause kidney damage. Some spinach is ok, a lot is not.
Would integrating fermented vegetables and ACV into the diet helps with better digestion of kale/ too much fiber?

Thank you for pointing out the constipation/ bloating issues. If it were to happen to ME I might think that the kale was NOT the instigator.
I cooked Kale yesterday trying to incorporate it in my diet and omg....i was in pain all day and all night, my stomach is just round and sensitive I am so dang bloated and uncomfortable i can't even fathom eating another thing today despite being so hungry 😭😭😭

Thanks for this video. I'd love to hear more about digestion. You focus on health first weight loss follows which I totally love. I've noticed many assume everyones digestion is fine and their heartburn is from spicy food or acne eczema or constipation is from not eating healthy foods and fiber. But maybe they have a digestive system thats out of wack. Anways love your knowledge sharing, keep it up. And the Adrenal body type supplements worked great for me... when I followed healthy diet. I'll get back on it, just gotta say no to that sugar, its so evil :(
I eat baby kale in my salads every day and luckily for me I have normal healthy bowel movements, even on keto. I do Natural Calm magnesium citrate in warm water every night too though....but I think after people give it some time, they get more used to fiber. In the past I had problems with kale too, but now I can eat cruciferous like a champ with no bloat, no constipation, no upset stomach, no gas. My observations were that combining kale with fruit sugar or any other sugars was what caused me to have these symptoms. Also, eating raw kale after eating cooked foods caused these problems. The raw was digesting too quickly and couldn't get past the slow digesting cooked foods causing gas and discomfort from the gas. Thanks for the video!
Oh no, and here I was eating even more kale to try and rid the constipation.
You are exactly right - I eat the proper foods - but I tend to get constipated. Introducing spinach into my diet seems to balance the problem.

Why does kale hurt my gut? It feels like eating card, not that I've tried card lol I simply cannot digest it. I'll stick with steamed spinach. Thank you Dr Berg.
Yes I noticed in-between my 15 and 20 cup of kale I didn't feel to well

In the Netherlands it's a very common vegetable and has been for many years. The traditional way to eat it is to cook it and mash it with cooked potatoes and eat sausage with it. Tastes way better than making juice from it.

I have Hypothyroidism/Hashimotos, will eating Kale twice a week deplete my Iodine?
Please help
Probably. I’m Hypothyroid. It affected my Thyroid big time, but I can only speak to my own experience with it. Perhaps Dr. Berg’s suggestion of taking Sea Kelp with it will help you though. For myself, I just stay away from it now.
i thought fiber increased bowel movements not constipation
I think improperly digested fiber is what causes constipation.
As he said, the microbes in your gut can only consume so much fiber. Without them, we can't digest it. So if they're overloaded, the rest is left undigested.
Fiber is great, but too much of anything is bad.
Low bile, poor liver and gall bladder function and dehydration can also cause constipation.
The more you eat fiber regularly, the more you can intake, but take it gradual.
I am thinking like you too. I drinking kale juice for two months .
I had consipation it goes away. Kale makes me go twice 😀
@@WakeUpDontTakeTheMark too much meat causes constipation.
Doctor, Instead of drinking kale, can we just steam it and eat it with lots of freshly squeezed lemon olive oil and sea salt...?
Eh...how can anyone eat kale? I tried some that was organic and it was so tough and hard. I won't eat any of that again.
Hey I was facing the same problem with kale so find some solutions you can check it on my you tube channel i.e. creamy kale,Garlic kale.
Cook it?
I LOVE kale sauteed in olive or macadamia oil with chopped garlic and Himalayan salt and then sprinkled with apple cider vinegar. I treat them kind of like collards or turnip greens except I don't cook them to death. Every time I eat kale, though, I get bad bloating and then diarrhea the next day.
Kale, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts are all the SAME PLANT. It is a weed called Brassica oleracea. These are unhealthy and unnatural. Humans were never designed to eat them. There is a reason they taste bitter, because that is a warning sign that it isn't good for you. These are Genetically Modified Organisms and while it is promoted by the low carb community for its low carb content, that doesn't make them healthy to consume. Just ask yourself, would you EVER eat this weed in nature? Why don't we ever seen a natural field of these plants? These are manufactured by agriculture. The Keto community is still holding onto myths that were invented by the same people who created the FDA food pyramid. We do not need fiber to have healthy guts. We do not need to consume plants to get nutrients from.
Funny how a vegetable becomes the "best thing on the planet" , but give it enough time and people will look for something to condemn it. Kale was, is, and always will be good for you, you just can't do what most Americans do, and that's take it to extremes. That being said, we are all bio-identically different, and foods have different effects on different people. Listen to your body, but I will bet a rational amount of kale in the diet will be in your best health interest!
birage so it will be best to mix kale lettuce spinach and other foods? I'm trying to find the best solution here with raw foods.
Absolutely, remember that we need diversity in our diet. Mixing greens will give a broader spectrum of nutrients, rather than just eating a lot of one particular type of green that may be strong in certain nutrients, but lacking in others, hence the reason to include many different types of vegetables (providing you don't have an allergy or reaction to any sort of food). Also, cruciferous vegetables, as well as most vegetables are better digested when cooked and eliminate the goitrigen factor that allegedly suppresses the thyroid. If you have a strong digestive sytem you may not have a problem with raw vegetables, but people with SIBO, for example, have a hard time with raw and should stay with cooked. As they say, listen to your body. If you get gassy, crampy, etc., you may need to cook your greens. Good luck and be healthy.
Exactly, people hear about one veggie that is "good" for you and go nuts on it. A variety of veggies of all different colours.

Also try to fast for 12, 14 or 16 hrs everyday. Evening... Something like eggs because its easy.
I did get a huge ton of gas, so I am going to try less of the kale. I hope my body will tolerate it because I need healing. I don't do spinach, it's high histamine.
I literally... Just ate an ENTIRE BAG of kale straight.
CryptPixel lol
Bless your soul
Unbeleivable! To me kale tastes like grass. Am I a cow!!?
@@deborahmorton547 It tastes like grass, it's frekin uneatable. But if you put milk, a banana, add kale and mix it. Suddenly it tastes like heaven. (Then you can add all the other healthy stuff too, makes it taste even better. It's pretty weird and awesome xD)
sitting on the throne now. 2nd time within 2 hours. thought it was just my fasting
For the first time ever, I’m in the higher percentage lol! I have chronic constipation and eating 4-6 cups of kale a day has been great for me. 👍
That was funny how you emphasized fiber. Fie - Burrrr. lol
Lol
I probably will never experience problems with eating Kale.
Hi dr Berg, aren’t you concerned about Thallium? Kale is the best at pulling out thallium from the soil. And it doesn’t matter if it’s organic. Have you ever been tested? Could you please make a video on this topic? I love kale 🥬
..first internet video i've seen that expresses the potential negatives of Kale. I get sooooo locked up with Kale.
...even cooked? (2yrs later I know)
@@brothercaleb 😂 I have no problems with it if its cooked.
@@lovelyeyessee I’m doing steamed as well. Otherwise It is jail time down there 👇🏾 for me too🤪

I have a Kate apple satsuma banana porridge and water smoothie in the morning , and then I have tomatoes and scrambled eggs on toast with a green tea , then burn it off doing a hard physical job
Love kale 🤗
Watch out for the high oxalate levels in raw spinach.
