    Sharing Dr Berg notes:
    Vegetables have numerous health benefits. They are packed with important vitamins and minerals and are high in fiber.
    Vegetables are also loaded with phytonutrients, which are hard to get from other types of foods. Phytonutrients have a range of incredible health benefits, from protecting against inflammation to fighting cancer.
    Raw vegetables grown on soil even contain probiotics, which are friendly bacteria. Organic vegetables have a higher diversity of friendly microbes than non-organic vegetables. But keep in mind that the more you cook a vegetable, the more you’ll lessen the probiotic effects.
    It’s important to note that not everyone can tolerate high amounts of vegetables. If you are immune compromised or have any inflammatory condition in the gut, you may have difficulty consuming vegetables.
    If you consume raw vegetables and you feel worse, you may do better on the carnivore diet for a while. However, you could also try fermented vegetables or cooked vegetables.
    When you cook vegetables, you destroy many of the vitamins and enzymes in them. Heat also kills the microbes in vegetables.
    However, if you lightly steam or sauté your vegetables, you won’t lose minerals or as many vitamins. Steaming or sautéing vegetables may actually enhance the phytonutrients-but the data on this is inconsistent.
    As far as raw vegetables vs. cooked vegetables, I believe it’s best to consume a good portion of your vegetables raw. But, certain vegetables should be cooked, like Brussels sprouts, broccoli, and cauliflower.
    The worst thing you can do as far as preserving the nutrient content in your vegetables is to fry them. You can still consume fried vegetables but don’t think you’re getting a lot of nutrients from them.
    Thank you Dr Berg!🐱👍🏿

Both cultures do not eat so much raw vegetable on a daily basis. I am Japanese and I decided to do plant based diet and started eating lots of salad with raw vegetables. My dad who was 86 had to eat raw too because I cook for him. Turns out his prostate cancer PSA number which was creeping up went back down and improved so it surprised the doctor. (this happened within less than 2 months!! because the checkup was every 3 month) The ONLY change was his diet. I always cooked the vegetables before but my big question was whether serving the vegetables raw made the big difference. I believethere must be some nutrients we can take when we take them raw.

    We do eat a heated soup with squash, veggies, and meats after work. It is sort of a stretched OMAD eaten within an eight hour window. The meat is not grass fed and finished (yet), but the eggs in the salad are pasture raised.
    I would love your opinion on this regime.

      "The meat is not grass fed and finished (yet)," indicates clearly that I have heard, and agree with, his teaching on this matter. This understanding was further clarified when I said, "but the eggs in the salad are pasture raised."
      So, you see, there was no question of the importance of grass fed and finished meats at all. There was a question; regarding his opinion of the basic diet I presented, with the clarifications regarding said grass fed and finished meats:
      "I would love your opinion on this regime."
      That was the only question proffered. If you would care to comment on that, your words would be much appreciated.

      @NoMoreCookiesSorry Yes, he did, and I love eggs sunny side up, but that does not go as well in a salad. Too messy! LOL
      But, thank you for this comment. It was a good reminder of that fact. I soft boil the eggs to keep the yokes from being too hard, which seems to be good, as you have just reminded me. I may even take a minute or two off the cook time as a result.
      Again, thank you...sincerely.

    In the UK we have had quite a few instances of elderly people (mainly in care homes) getting sick and some dying from Listeria infections after consuming vegetables. I personally think this is due to vegetables and fruits not being washed properly before consumption in addition to weak immune systems. Not sure if similar occurs in the USA. Cucumbers for some reason seems to be one of the main culprits, but of course there are others. In the UK it is not normal to peel many vegetables and fruits prior to cooking/consumption (bananas and oranges being the obvious exceptions).

    Hi Dr. Berg. Multi-part question in regards to consuming veggies. I’ve been putting all my veggies in a blender and drinking it. Is there any loss in nutritional value when the vegetables are blended?
    2nd part: when drinking your vegetable smoothie, does the rate of consumption affect how much of the nutrients get absorbed in your body? For example drinking 24oz of vegetables in 5 minutes, vs drinking 24oz over the span of an hour.
    Thanks!

    I was raw vegan for over a year - I can tell you from experience the way you feel for the first year of going raw is amazing - the energy is off the hook however I could not sustain it because for me I needed some meat because I became depleted - not much meat and yes I’m O- and suppose to be the meat eater, well that theory isn’t always true for all people - I don’t need much meat however I do need some of that kind of that protein. I eat a credit card sized portion of meat and because I live in an area where grass fed is not available because it ALL goes to the big city - I supplement with powdered paleo protein in my smoothies that I purchase online. - and it’s FABULOUS! I take almost all of Berg’s products because I can’t eat enough food to get the nutrients I need - I don’t suffer overweight because I am omad with a prolonged 3-4 day fast 3x a month. I’m an invalid and mostly wheelchair bound so I have to be very strict with myself - no cheating and NEVER touching grains or sugar EVER. So for me I eat both cooked and raw and for heaven’s sake y’all don’t boil your veg without cooking off the SMALL AMOUNT OF WATER you added to the pan don’t pour off those vitamins. It’s all about technique in cooking and you owe it to yourself to be autodidact 💚☘️💚

      The best way to retain the nutrients when cooking vegetables is to steam them, and the Legumes should be cooked in a pressure cooker. If your Dad is having problems with tolerating Legumes and vegetables, please don't exclude them!, A plantbased diet truly is the best for your Dad's health!.
      You just need to include them in his diet very, very slowly, the gut is like a muscle, to make it stronger, you need to build up slowly over time the enzymes in the gut to be able to digest and tolerate them!. A carnivore diet longterm, would cause serious health issues for your Dad, and is very bad advice!.

    • @Robin.2226
      @Robin.2226 Год назад +1

      Studies keep showing that complex carbohydrates you'll find in whole fruits, veggies, Legumes, and whole grains are anything but inflammatory. They're actually anti-inflammatory. But we rely on our gut microbiome to process them, and if there's damage to the gut then it's also impaired in carbohydrate processing, which leads to digestive distress. That's not inflammation, that's just sloppy processing. It doesn't hurt you beyond the acute symptoms. But what does hurt you is the effect that you see from animal product consumption, less short chain fatty acids producing good bacteria, more inflammatory bacteria, increased intestinal permeability, release of bacterial endotoxin, creation of carcinogenic secondary bile salts/polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons/N-nitroso compounds/heterocyclic aromatic amines and vascular disease- fueling TMAO. Yes, it is easier for our body to digest and process meat. We don't rely on our microbiome as much for that. So you may not feel any discomfort, but keep in mind what's happening inside you. Silent but deadly!.

    • @Robin.2226
      @Robin.2226 Год назад +1

      The source of protein, whether from plants or animals, can have very different effects on the microbiome. For example, plant protein increases the growth of anti-inflammatory species like Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus while suppressing the destructive ones like Bacteroides Fragilis and Clostridium perfringens. The result is correction of leaky gut. On the flip side, diets high in animal protein have consistently been associated with increased growth of inflammatory microbes like Bilophila Wadsworthia, Alistips and Bacteroides. These bacteria produce toxins like amines, sulfides and secondary bile salts. Amines cause food sensitivity at baseline, and then when you char meat it turns them into carcinogenic heterocyclic amines. Hydrogen sulfide has been associated with ulcerative colitis. Secondary bile salts have been associated with cancer of the colon, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, liver, pancreas and biliary tract. No surprise, this consumption of animal protein results in increased intestinal permeability and inflammation!.

    • @Robin.2226
      @Robin.2226 Год назад +1

      In a groundbreaking study by Dr's Lawrence David and Peter Turnbaugh, a group of people cycled between a completely plant based diet, which was rich in grains, Legumes fruits and vegetables, and a animal based diet, which was composed of meats, eggs and cheeses. This "animal based diet" could also be called the Keto diet, extremely low carb, very high fat. It could also be called the "carnivore diet" 100% animal products, no plants. There were dramatic changes of the studys participants in the microbiome in less than twenty four hours. It didn't take long. The animal based diet saw the disturbing emergence of inflammatory bacteria like Bilophila Wadsworthia, Alistips putredinis, and Bacteroides. This was expected with the high levels of saturated fat and animal protein. Remember, these are the bacteria that produce toxins like amines, sulfides and secondary bile salts. Meanwhile there was starvation and recession of the healing microbes like Roseburia, Eubacterium rectal, and Faecalibacterium prausnitzii. Simular to the Paleo diet, this is a shift away from health towards disease. Perhaps the most disturbing part is the rapid emergence of Bilophila Wadsworthia, known to produce hydrogen sulfide, which promotes inflammatory bowel disease. Its alarming to consider that in less than five days the foundation is being laid for the development of Crohns disease or Ulcerative Colitis with this diet.
