    8:38 Learn more about potassium!
Let’s talk about the importance of potassium and what can happen if you don’t get enough.
Your body requires a lot of potassium. The daily requirement for potassium is 4700 mg.
Potassium is important for the sodium-potassium pump. The sodium-potassium pump is like a battery for your cells.
Vegetables are the best source of potassium. One cup of leafy greens provides between 500 and 800 mg of potassium. If you consumed five to ten cups of vegetables daily, you would get plenty of potassium. In comparison, a banana only provides about 300 mg of potassium. Bananas also contain a lot of fructose.
Unfortunately, the average person is not getting enough potassium from their diet-and potassium supplements typically only give you up to 99 mg of potassium per tablet.
Potassium deficiency is often overlooked. It’s difficult to diagnose, and symptoms of a potassium deficiency are sometimes vague. Early symptoms often include difficulty breathing, fatigue, and heart palpitations.
A more severe deficiency in potassium can lead to the following:
    • High blood pressure
    • Increased risk of stroke
    • Fluid retention or edema
    • Bone loss
    • Kidney stones
Causes of potassium deficiency that go beyond a lack of potassium in the diet can include:
    • Penicillin
    • Diuretics
    • Steroids
    • Chronic stress
    • High insulin (high-carb diet)
    • Refined or processed foods
Even the keto diet and prolonged fasting can lead to a potassium deficiency if not done correctly. You will lose potassium as you lose water weight on keto. Consuming enough potassium on keto and taking a potassium supplement while doing a prolonged fast is crucial.
Eating too much too quickly after a prolonged fast or consuming too many carbs after a prolonged fast can also cause a severe potassium deficiency, which can be dangerous.
My challenge for you is to start consuming a lot of foods high in potassium, like leafy greens, for one week and see how you feel. I think you're going to notice a big difference.

I still eat about 3 medium potatoes per week. Zero muscle cramping is the result. Leafy greens don't cut it AFAIC. I used to gobble magnesium and salt the hell out of everything, ate salad etc, still degenerated to cramping.
I'll cope with the starch, thank you. The secret is to use your muscles sufficiently to deplete the glycogen stores so that they can grab the carbs. A potato has an ingredient list like health food, compared to grains.

I will take his advice over Western medically "trained" (brain washed) Doctors any day! Been there, done that, got the t-shirt. In fact, since taking Dr. Berg's advice, I have lost 134lbs, lowered my blood sugar, increased energy levels, removed many other symptoms and issues and feel better at 53 than I did when I was 35. He has literally helped 1,000's of people at the cellular level, not at the "let's treat this symptom with a pill" level, like the Med School trained MD's and other "Doctors" in the U.S. Western medicine has it's place, but it should not be relied on 100% imo.

Dr. Berg, I have been studying your page for a long time, and this is the very information that saved me. I don't think I would be here today if I had not learned this from you. Following a tornado, we had to be put in housing by our insurance co. till our house was rebuillt. We were eating in restaurants and I started having very high blood pressure. Many trips to the ER, I started studying on your page taught me about it. I have a large beautiful plate of brightly colored vegetablles every morning, and Avocado. for breakfast now. I stay as far away from the whites as I can. I do still love ice cream, but I know it is pure poison, so I try to steer clear. Thank you for all your good information.

I've found, for myself, that a good way to quit something "bad" in your food consumption -- i.e., to overcome a food addiction (or "emotional eating", as some would call it), such as ice cream (which truly is a nutritional disaster, IMHO), is by substitution. Best done in a "cold turkey" way. Especially for something as diabolically bad as ice cream. Don't try to quit it gradually. Immediately replace it with another "buttery" (high fat) food treat, such as cream cheese. Gourmet cheeses, eaten slowly and intentionally savored, perhaps slathered with high quality (grass fed, organic, etc.) butter, with a little beef jerky on the side. Flavors that your mouth will love. Whatever's a treat for you, food-wise. Keto coffee, a.k.a. butter keto coffee might be another example. Half and half, sour cream, high fat yogurt of ultra high quality. Even a brief dalliance with occasional cheesecake. As long as you don't go getting addicted to something new. The key thing is to break the evil ice cream addiction. Break its back. Then celebrate your victory, and new freedom in your diet. I broke my long standing dark chocolate habit, after learning about how terrible oxalates were (from Sally K. Norton). I did it primarily through substitution: white chocolate for dark chocolate, then I gradually quit the white -- because its high sugar was undesirable, and it was an unnecessary expense. Not worth the supposed "pleasure". There are so many other foods to enjoy! We don't have to be a prisoner to any one of them. God provided us with a great many different foods to enjoy. All the best, on your health journey. Congrats on coming so far, already.

@@gentleoldmoviefan5680- Really good advice. Sometimes the texture and 'feel' of a food is just as compelling as the flavour. I find tea with organic heavy cream really helps me avoid ice cream and other treats. Cream cheese, chèvre, and sour cream are wonderful, too! I must admit though, I love a tiny bit of very dark, high quality chocolate! I just returned (cold turkey) to keto a week ago. I lost someone I love this year, and the 'emotional eating' really spiralled out of control. Glad to finally be taking good care of myself again. All the best to you!

@@mutteringmalesome people have thyroid problems, hormone imbalances or other health conditions that might cause weight gain. Certain medications cause weight gain.
I agree that people should be more health conscious and make better food choices. In my opinion it should start with educating yourself on healthy food choices and then be disciplined enough to stick to your choices.
Another problem is affordability. Conveniently fast food/junk food is more affordable than buying quality meat and organic vegetables. Fries/chips make you feel full fast. Although it’s crap. Vegetables are not anyone’s favorite. Fruit juice is an alternative to fruit treated with added “chemicals” from pesticides, fertilizers and chemicals to preserve fruit.
I lived in a country where rice, potatoes, vegetables 1 sweet and 1 salty was served everyday. At age 45 we immigrated to Canada to a small town in Alberta. There is only one supermarket. Everything was almost double the price than in the nearest town that was 100km away. Fresh produce was not so very fresh anymore. Meat was crazy expensive. People worked long hours and would support A&W or Macdonalds on their way to work.
I don’t approve of junk food or bad food choices but understand why low income people buy the most affordable food.
We should not be judging others.

4 times as much potassium as sodium is needed(Potass 4-1 sodium). The average person has this switched😬. They usually have a sodium to potassium ratio of 1:4. They’re very light on potassium & very heavy on sodium intake🥴. Normal potassium level tests check the blood outside the cell. Only 2% of potassium reserves are present outside the cell. 98% of potassium is inside the cells & the tests don’t look there. A special test for intracellular potassium is needed to really see the potassium levels......

Great info! It's such a blessing to have Dr. Berg give us this info. I'm a nonsecretor and GAD65, with a number of autoimmune diseases. In my early years, I was stationed on a toxic military base, had 12 immunizations in one day like most military people, and was a nurse for many years having to have more immunizations to obtain jobs. Just grateful for every day I'm still here. I am prescribed 80 meq of potassium a day, which adds up to about 32 over-the-counter pills daily. Doctors don't have a clue about my body. I have hyperoxaluria due to damage from celiac and working in a moldy government building more recently. I think I lose more potassium when I'm dumping oxalates. When I mention it, they look at me and treat me like I have mental problems. I start to not feel good when my potassium levels get on the very low edge of normal for some reason so they see me as a hypochondriac. I'm sure I have potassium highs and lows even eating the same diet. I have to stay aware of my body's signs. Information from Dr. Berg has surely helped me with my health challenges. If I didn't have this info I no doubt wouldn't have made it this far.

The sodium-potassium pump is a special protein in cell membranes that helps maintain the right balance of sodium and potassium ions inside and outside the cell.
It works by using energy from ATP to move three sodium ions out of the cell for every two potassium ions it brings in. This creates a difference in ion concentrations, which is important for many cell functions.
By doing this, the sodium-potassium pump helps cells work properly and stay stable.

    1. Introduction to Potassium:
    - Daily potassium requirement is 4700 mg.
    - Potassium is crucial for the sodium-potassium pump, essential for cell function.
    2. Sources of Potassium:
    - Vegetables are a primary potassium source (500-800 mg per cup of leafy greens).
    - Bananas provide about 300 mg of potassium but also contain fructose.
    3. Potassium Deficiency:
    - Common due to insufficient dietary intake and inadequate supplements (typically up to 99 mg per tablet).
    - Difficult to diagnose with vague early symptoms like difficulty breathing and fatigue.
    4. Symptoms and Risks of Deficiency:
    - Early symptoms: difficulty breathing, fatigue, heart palpitations.
    - Severe deficiency risks: high blood pressure, stroke, fluid retention, bone loss, kidney stones.
    5. Causes of Potassium Deficiency:
    - Beyond dietary lack, caused by medications (penicillin, diuretics, steroids), chronic stress, high insulin, and certain diets (keto, prolonged fasting).
    6. Keto Diet and Prolonged Fasting:
    - Potential for potassium deficiency due to water weight loss and inadequate potassium intake.
    - Emphasizes the importance of consuming enough potassium and supplementing during fasting.
    7. Health Challenge:
    - Encourages a potassium-rich diet for one week, focusing on leafy greens to experience potential health improvements.

I absolutely love your videos and appreciate your knowledge and ability to help so many people. I have many deficiencies and ailments but whenever I eat nutrient rich food or take supplements to correct those deficiencies and attempt to feel better, I become sicker and cannot function. My dr says I have digestive issues and cannot tolerate the nutrients but even the supplements for correcting digestion make me ill or give me migraines. I wish I could make an appointment with you! ❤ I'll keep watching your videos and maybe one day I'll crack the code to wellness. Thank you for all you do.

Pray. God is the only healer. Nutrient deficiencies you may have, but see how prayer takes away all the symptoms. Diagnosis is a big stronghold against people. If you didn't know what you had, you wouldn't care how you got better. Maybe just 1 prayer and you would be better, but since there's science to tell you why you have what you have then you don't use a prayer of faith to get better, you run to the recommended remedy.

I have to tell you, from the very beginning I said to myself, "Don't buy into this BS" but I had one so i could be around my elderly Mom. The second one was mandatory or "Lose your job"
I'm now a former Nurse. With that being said, "I'm woke."
The sad thing is, I've never seen so many young people in the Cardio's office. I was shocked! I told my Son not to get it. He didn't. And has never been sick.
Unfortunately, I was one of the very first people with the original "Covid" I had all the
"Symptoms" such as, couldn't breathe, chest pressure, could barely walk my dog, heart failure. I could go on. I went to my primary care Doctor and they did breathing treatments on me along with inhalers and a bunch of other stuff. It took me four full long months for me to recover. Oh, my hair fell out too. That picture you see is after a really short haircut and growing it back.
Anyway, I have learned to follow my own instincts now so the answer is Yes. I have learned.
It was all a big lie. There, I've said it. It was simply a bad flu like I had back in the 80's.... I was very young back then and bounced right back.
Moral of the story, "GO with your gut."

I have Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis. My body depletes itself of potassium and I become paralyzed frotmy neck down. Sometimes fully body paralysis, sometimes it's just my legs or just my arms. I was hospitalized for it many times starting in my early 30's. It took about 6 or 7 years until they figured out what it was. Luckily a Dr on call in the ER knew about my disorder when I was there. My older brother started getting it in his early 40's. It a rare genetic disorder. 99.99% of Drs and nurses have never heard of it.
Once the paralysis slowly goes away, the muscles become extremely painful, especially in the joints, hips are the worst. I've yet to meet anyone with it, besides my brother who just recently found out.

My significant other does too. His heart doc and he both figured out independently of one another what he had. Then we did a lot of studying. Over the last 3-4 years we've come up with our own homemade electrolyte etc mix, however after watching this we'll be doubling the amount of potassium we put in it. He used to go to ER with this, but during the lockdowns the doc usually didn't get around to him for hours. The last 2 trips after being told it would be 6 hr wait we went home. Then started dealing with the episodes on our own at home. Episodes used to occur from once week to every 3 months. Because of our mix his episodes are few and far between and last 30-60 minutes. No more ER visits. Long story about dealing with rough uneducated ambulance personnel and pushy rude know-it-all docs and nurses in ER. They know nothing about this condition nor how to treat it.

I, too have hypokalemic periodic paralysis. My brother and I got it from our dad, though our sister doesn’t have it. My brother has 3 kids and 2 also have it. Over time my father and myself both have permanent muscle weakness. My father can no longer walk and has been in a wheelchair for many years now. I’m in the stage of falling a lot, even when not in the middle of a low potassium episode. I can take anywhere from 1 to 4 or 5 potassium bicarbonate (25 mEg | 978 mg) effervescent tablets when I’m having an episode of severe weakness, and 1 or 2 just to maintain on a good day. We’ve done a lot of research and found a few branches of our family tree in other parts of our country, that also have HKPP. The key is to avoid having episodes or attacks by maintaining your potassium level and avoiding sodium. Movement during times of weakness eventually causes permanent muscle weakness. We’re always explaining to doctors about our disorder as it is so rare. You need to be your own advocate for sure.

I would never have noticed if I didn’t get my pressure checked because you just feel the same.

A few years ago the recommendation was lowered to 3400 mg for men and 2600 mg for women. No average person was eating 4700 mg, very hard to do without supplements. (powder potassium, can be dangerous if not diluted. Take it with food or dilute it in drink.))
Potassium need depends on lifestyle and other circumstances. A 250 lbs man who is a physical worker (sweats a lot) needs double or more compared to a 110 lbs woman who works in an office.
