Royal Oils and Crowns of heritage previously did a sweepstakes for a chance to win one of 50 African Ancestry DNA kits. Let me know if you received one!
My hair story began the way I imagine most natural hair journeys begin in America; a lot of curiosity, anxiety, and confusion. I unfortunately, could not trace my lineage back to its roots so it left me with a lot of questions about who I am and what my hair actually looked like without a chemical relaxer. The biggest question of all was, could I love my true appearance regardless.
There’s been a lot of shame surrounding black people’s hair primarily since America’s involvement in the slave trade began in the 1800s. That criticism let to a lot of systemic racism that led to poverty and low self esteem for many people of African descent. Of course that’s the simplified version, but it’s also the truth.
I’ve decided to tell my hair story not only to invite you to understand my relationship with my hair, but to illustrate my connection to the stories of millions of black and brown people across the world.

Here we go with some dumb thumbs down. Why? What's to dislike about another person's journey? That makes me so mad!
ANYWAY I came to share and remind you of how pivotal you were in my confidence to stop relaxing my hair. While we did that show (before you relaxed again) we had many conversations, including about your mom's feedback...which also made me mad, but your knowledge and that gorgeous hair really helped my perspective. During that show I was wearing twist outs; when the show ended I kept doing that as a way to convince myself I didn't need to straighten my hair. 6ish months after that show I did my chop. It was my third intention to go natural and I have you among those to thank for me finally doing it. I haven't looked back. So, thank you, again.

So my whole life I've constantly heard people say that I didn't get the "good hair". Well, they're wrong. 4C hair is beautiful and unique. Everyone also needs to learn that It's common for African Americans to have different hair textures within our immediate families due to a mix of Native American ancestry and the horrors of forcible violation during U.S. slavery.

Only a very small percentage of Black Americans have Native American DNA and the majority of Black Americans who have European lineage do so because of interracial marriage, not because of rape. Also Black people are the most diverse group of people. People in Africa with no admixture have a range of skin colors and hair textures. I don't know why people insist on attributing our beauty and/or diversity to race mixing when the MAJORITY of Black people (including Black Americans) are not mixed.

Truly ST all the way the FU you ignorant twit who I wasn't even talking to. Like it was said, I don’t want to go too far from the intent of this beautiful video either.....There is though, a part of your comment @Blaze Hot, that needs correcting.
RAPE is the primary cause of the racial diversity that is buried within the #dna of most Black People.
Slaves weren’t even “allowed” to wed each other lawfully. Interracial unions absolutely weren’t ordained by any church, and even less occurring; were those couples; the couples what we see represented by interracial couples today. It was the “Passing” community of Black people that were more likely to be in interracial relationships.
So although it MAY have happened; not nearly in the numbers that would have been necessary to account for the consistent presence of European/Other #dna found in most Black Americans.
FYI....approximately 20% of the average Black persons #dna IS from “non-African” origins.

    • @NinaBaby210
      @NinaBaby210 3 года назад +1

Self- reported African Americans averaged to 0.8% Native American ancestry.👀

There is something so interesting about finally chopping your hair... then going back to the perm, then it just not feeling right, even though you have had it with your natural hair... then chopping it off again... then back to natural..... there is just something about having said to yourself..."this is my hair, how it grows... this is who I am"... the perm, just never feels right again....even though now and then it makes its appearance on your head!

Thank you so much for posting this! Even while natural I still struggle with what looks good or acceptable. Due to so many generations before us having the debate of good vs bad hair, I notice that my family only will compliment my hair when its a twist or braid out and not a wash n go style. We as a community (and myself) have a long way to go.

Please also recognize how "WE" talk about ourselves in reference to "good vs bad" hair "light vs dark" skin etc. It makes a difference. The title did jump out and caught my attention to write this comment. I do enjoy your content. I commented after I watched the video. Great job! You addressed the generational trauma and please delve more into this which is why the natural hair movement is and was so important to our health as well as healing from systematic oppression too. Your mom's comments were are just as true as your journey as well especially due to your profession in the dramatic arts and her experiences as a hair dresser for people in that field and many others before our generation.

Loved this! Someone told me I shouldn’t go natural because I was blessed with such a beautiful head of hair.....well I had to give up relaxers to embrace my real texture of so called ”blessed” hair. Some of us have been so brainwashed to believe that if our hair is kinky it isn’t amazing. Once again, thank you for proving them wrong. I cringe when people reference loose curly hair as “good” hair. If hair is healthy....then it is good! Regardless of the texture and curl pattern.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED this video! The 2010 clip of you talking about going natural looked like an audition tape for like MTV or ANTM lol....wait? Did you try out for ANTM??? It was the vernacular for me. The 90s...what a time to grow up! This was such a great video. The head and shoulders does good on your hair. I know a few friends that have active scalps that swear by this.Thank you for sharing a little history of yourself.

Thanks for sharing the shadow side of why BW are obsessed with our hair. We are ASHAMED of our kinks. Which is a great travesty since hair is so connected to our self esteem as women in general and BW in particular. I started locking my hair 2 years ago and haven’t looked back! I finally feel at peace in my spirit when I’m not constantly fighting my curls!

Western ideas of #beauty🤦🏾‍♀️ It is just A FACT, that a large percentage of #us Black Women, don’t even realize our motivations for the things we gravitate toward.
The affects of Western #standards have permeated our very cores, and in ways that we can’t or don’t want to acknowledge....How we feel about our #crowns is a major example of this.
I LOVED this video! I wish for EVERY Sista, this kind of appreciation & love for who #we are, and how it IS more than enough! Peace & Love🖤🖤🖤

It was your hair blown out being as long as that weave in the beginning for me. Natural hair is one of the most beautiful and unique things that God created. I admire you so much for sharing your journey. Your road was harder than most because you had no one who paved the way for you. But look what you’ve done for so many other little girls that won’t have to go through what you did. They won’t have to wait until they’re an adult to be able to love that part of themselves. They will know they are beautiful from day one, and that will be all. 🤍

So I understand where you coke from ,I went natural because every time I got a relaxer I would get horrible nose bleeds my dad said no more relaxers for my child I enjoyed not getting my scalp burned and not having nose bleeds every month. After my hair transitioned to natural I got bullied so hard because my hair was so big, long and kinky I started hating it and myself. The self hate continued so much I started losing my hair then started locs to save my hair. From 15-20 inches of hair ending up to 4 inches over hating and neglecting my hair. Grew my locs for five years and cut them last year. I felt so naked took time to like myself with short hair ,got irritated with shrinkage and tangling but now a year later I like my hair more than I did when I was a teen

Growing up as a white kid in rural Texas, I never even heard the term "good hair/bad hair" until I was an adult working at a beauty shop. It breaks my heart to know that kids grow up being convinced that they shouldn't love themselves the way they are. Knowing what I know now, all I can say is, this stigma needs to stop. ALL HAIR IS GOOD HAIR

Omg I also went back to relaxers four years ago and it took my hair out. I told myself that if I didn't know how to manage my own natural hair, what makes me think that I can take care of my hair while relaxed? Four years after relaxers, I finally realized that it's not what products I use, but what ingredients I use. It's not how do I grow hair, it's how do I retain my new length. My new beauty supply store is the produce section now. I'm now more excited for my journey than I have ever been.

I'm so glad you chose to follow your own mind and not to listen to anyone else about going natural, we've been conditioned to be ashamed of the hair that grows naturally out of our scalp, but you knew better because you felt better about yourself, you had pride in your African heritage and now look at you you're rocking that gorgeous hair, peace and good health to you and your family :)
