Another way of cutting holes in the rubber mat cleanly is using a sharpened metal pipe. Either way is fine really, but if you need circles instead of holes and have the right size pipe, then it's a useful thing to know.
I hadn't really even thought about a vacuum bag being homemade. Really cool.
You are correct, I was opting for that, but could not find a small enough pipe to make the hole punch. Thanks for watching and commenting
definitely gonna steal that trick as well.. thanks
@@bellevuesnekkeri In my chemistry lab courses, it was common to use a small diameter brass tube-shaped cutter/borer to make holes in corks. Perhaps check a lab supply site or store - and ask someone at a local university?
This is so genius yet so simple. Can't wait to build one of these for my own projects! Thanks for showing this build!
Thanks for watching and commenting
I work with this vinyl on a daily basis building custom boat canopies. If you use a plastic welder (harbor freight) you can actually weld this vinyl together permanently with some practice and will guarantee a true seal. I use 30guage glass because it is very rigid and resilient. Just a thought.
Thanks for the feedback James. Unfortunately there are no HF in Norway, but there I might try to bring a bag to my dayjob where we have heat sealers for plastic wrapping the woodpanels that we produce, good tip Sir
Great video. This is exactly what I need to vacuum acoustic guitar backs to braces to form a violin style back. Then, instead of about 60 clamps to glue the front and back to the sides. do it all at once with this vacuum bag.
Thanks Ted. Vacuum is a great clamping method
Could someone explain how the bag keeps the negative pressure even after the hose is disconnected? Is the brass fitting a 1-way valve?
The bag stays connected to the running vacuum pump during the hole glueup
it would be nice to give a link to the actual brass fittings you used here. That would complete a very practical/useful youtube video! Thanks Doug
Hi Doug. It purchased it in a local hardware store here in Norway,
@@bellevuesnekkeri could you please return to the hardware store and find out exactly what that fitting is called and what it's normally for? i can't find anything like it online without knowing what it is.

Tx for the video. Nice workshop you have!
Thanks for the kind feedback, and for watching Paul
Thanks man I'm getting into some projects and this will help me tons.
Glad you found it useful Andrew
Hi! I've been reading the comments for the past 15 minutes looking for the explanation of why the bag stays in negative pressure when you disconnect the pump. When you replied in a comment " The bag stays connected to the running vacuum pump during the hole GLUEUP " - the " GLUEUP " means that both sides of the bag touches so there's no more air that could get through ? I'm not familiar with vaccuum sealing yet, I just got into the field to create reusable bags to hold large foldable items during camping (car cover, sleeping bag, etc...). So If my understanding is correct, that wouldn't work for my requirements, I'd need a one-way valve ? Thanks in advance for your time, it was a great video that really inspired me !
No, a glue-up is the process of gluing wood together. He means that the vacuuming machine stays on during the entire gluing until it is dry, as you need as much pressure constantly to get the best results. The bags aren't perfectly sealed, so turning it off when it seems vacuum would result in worse results.
Great video , what thickness of material did you use ? Thanks
Thanks.I used 0.40mm. Rough, but might be a little thick for delicate narrow curves
@@bellevuesnekkeri Thank You
Very nice!
At 0:36 , what is the brass fixture and where can I get one? Thanks!
Thanks. Its a brass bulkhead fitting I found in the marine section of a local hardware store.
@@bellevuesnekkeri Ha! Thanks!
Try using one of those space saver bags.. The ones you use to store cloths in using your vacuum cleaning...
Still use your homemade valve to remove the air.
Should be a thinner bag. Easier to move the excess bag around and prevent bridging over the object inside the bag..
Great video as usual......
Thank you for the kind feedback. I have been using one of those up until now. But i poked a hole in it a few times and figured I would need something stronger. I actually used it my latest video, and you can see it here: ruclips.net/video/qzziJOSYEhU/видео.html
Stem Valve... if anyone has any Ebay, Amazon or other links for this... you'd be an amazing person for sharing! 👍🏼
Want to build boards with some youngsters so could really do with making the bags to save money for other things 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Can you put a valve on the stem to close off the bag in case you’re working with more than one glue up?
Sure, no problem. I use push in fittings, and these are available with a valve, or you can put a threaded ball valve on the stem. BUT I need to make more bags then:)

Thank for your youtube, its great
Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for watching
Good video! Do you mind telling me where you got the brass screw with a hole in the middle to build your stem valve? Thanks.
Thanks. I got it from the marine section of a local hardware store. Some kind of bulk fitting for water cooling, i think
this may or may not be of use (I haven't made one yet, but just got the material): extra heavy duty clear PVC shower liner might be more readily available and/or economical for some - assuming it works that is. I'll let you know whether it does when I make the bag.
Thanks for the input Gordon. you are correct, it is more readily available, and another advantage is that it is more flexible, to give better pressure to tight curves.
I have made a bag of the same material, it worked great, but mine might have been not heavy duty enough as it punctured a couple of places. It can easily be fixed with a patch, but if you are careful and not have any sharp corners, I guess it should be no problem. Let me know how it works out, and good luck on your bag build
@@bellevuesnekkeri - thanks. I'm hoping the weather will cool here soon so I can get back to work in the shop. no AC suuuuuucks, especially when working with materials that react poorly to contamination by sweat.

Can I use 0.25mm vinyl and glue them together with PVA/PVC glue?
You can use most material thicknesses, but it will affect durability. You need to use glue meant for vinyl/soft plastic. or use contact cement
Thank you for the instructions! Can you tell more or less how much you paid for the pump?
Tha vacuum pump is a free compressor from an old fridge that I salvaged
Awesome. Somebody just gave me a veneer vacuum pump and I'm looking at bags, but as always, I'd rather make my own...this is incredible timing. What kind of glue are you using? Cheers! Chris.
Thanks Chris. First I used some plastic glue that is suited for vinyl. But I ran out, and glued the second side with contact cement. Glad you found the video and timing useful😀
Great work, very interesting
Does the pvc seal works well? I mean: can you leave it overnight and the vaccum is still there?
It works great, I use an old refrigerator compressor, and just leave it on during the whole glue-up. Its very quiet
So nice👍🤩
Great tutorial on making a vacuum bag. Thanks. Could you please tell me where you got the valve stem? I cannot seem to find one that can take the male hose adapter.
Thank you Sir. I purchased in the marine dept of a hardware store here in Norway. It is meant to be put in the side of the boat to connect to cooling water or similar. this is the smallest one, I could find and it has 1/4" pipe threads. Someone in the comments section called it a bulkhead fitting for cooling water,
Bellevue Woodshop Thank you for the quick reply. I will have a look around to see if I can find one.
Another type of valve stem is a threaded shraeder valve for automobile wheels. They are available in straight and curved versions. Here's one source: www.kurveygirl.com/shop/product_info.php?cPath=169&products_id=71&osCsid=12jh4s43h1ujb8kfq54d0ih1f3 For this application, just leave out the inner valve.
Really nice! I need to make one of these for gluing guitar tops.
Very smart!!!!!
Thanks
Very good video of making the vacuum bag! I may need to make one and your video will guide me.
Q1- Could you link us to the “make a vacuum pump from a refrigerator compressor” video you made?
Q2 - Doesn’t the vacuum bag method of gluing prevent the glue from drying correctly? I’m only asking because I know temperature affects drying properly and was thinking that lack of enough air or O2 might affect the glue adhesion properties?
Thank you SIr. I did not make a dedicated video , just showed it in my video on assembly table accessories part 3. But it is pretty much just a case of taking any refrigerant compressor and cut the 2 pipes to the coil. One of them will suck, and the other will blow. Some suggest adding a few drops of oil into the inlet once in a while, but I have never found it necessary. I do not know very much on glue physics, but the glue dries for me, and I use regular woodworking glue. Thanks for watching
Bellevue Woodshop Ok. Thank you!
Very nice
Thank you Sir👍😄
Boat vinyl plastic? That stuff seems a bit pricey to use for this purpose?
I got it at a great price from a local store. It is extremely durable
Great video. It gave me some good ideas. Thank you
Glad you liked it, and thanks for watching and commenting Joseph
Great work as allways
Thank you SIr
Can i lock the bag by pipe for 4side without glue or
I mean 4 sides seals with plastic pipe
Hi. I dont think it wold be possible to use pipe sealing on 4 sides. It would be nearly impossible to get airtight in the corners
Next time use "bulkhead fittings" they are essentially what you made there. And boat vinyl is just thick vinyl. You can use vinyl, rubber or other flexible materials.
Unfortunately I could not find any locally
What's the gauge or mil of the clear canopy used on like to know
The one used here are 0.3mm. It is a little thick for complex curves, but very rigid. I have another bag of the same material that is 0,12mm. It is more flexible, but also more fragile
@@bellevuesnekkeri thanks for replying well I guess I'd have to see what a happy medium would be any videos of the other material?.
What size PVC pipes were used? Great video.
Thanks Dennis. I used 16mm for the inner one, and 20mm for the outer one😄👍

Thanks for watching and good luck on your cajon build
Add a manual valve between the stem and the quick connect and you can vac it out, seal it up and take the pimp off.
That could also work, but then I would have to make sure that the seal is 100% air tight. The compressor is super quiet and low power consumption
Bellevue Woodshop generally, if it's water tight, it's also air tight.
what glue and what is the fix all stuff?
Its a glue meant for vinyl and plastic, some kind of contact cement like stuff. The fix it all stuff is like denatured alcohol or some other thinner stuff, just for cleaning the surface before glue up
err that rubber sandwiched between 2 pieces of plywood is a trick i could of totally used a few weeks ago.
I will try to time my uploads a little better in the future 😀
Would love to know where to get the brass fittings or what they are called. Can't seem to find anything like that.

what is the gauge of vinyl? Is the stem valve the same as the car tire one?
I am not sure. I just purchased the thickest they had. It is vinyl meant for boat canopies. It could benefit from being thinner to more easily form around objects, but it is a compromise regarding strength. The stem valve is a bulk fitting for cooling fluid used in boats.

What's the tape you're using on the fittings?
Its a teflon tape meant for threaded fittings
Fantastic video, am loving the "Wood Workshop", it looks as tidy as a kitchen! I can tell a lot of thought has gone into how to pack as much into that space as possible, will definitely learn from that.
One question: Any ideas what hose connector(s) I'd need to adapt this for camping use? It would need to be a much lower profile connector (kind of like a tank connector fitting) but be able to use a bike/hand pump to deflate somehow. You get huge negative pressures and I'm just wondering if that could be done "In the field" so to speak.
Cheers again, I've subscribed! 👍
Thaks for the kind feedback, and for subbing. I now some people have used angled car wheel rim valves, but you need to find a way to secure it to the bag. i know some brands have a threaded stem. But as you are not in need of a heavy duty bag for extreme use (my guess) there are multiple bags w/pump on ebay, meant for stuffing away pillows, cluthers and other fabric like stuff
What thickness of vinyl is that?
I am not sure, I just purchased the thickness window making material they had at the place that sows boat canopies. It is a little thick, and tight curves might be an issue, but it is extremely rugged👍😄
The pushin fitting on top of the take off looks like a standard pneumatic fitting. These are not usually suited to vacuum applications.
Maybe not, but they work for me
Man if it's working.... It is! WTF.

Bagging tape is cheaper and faster, and if you’re doing curved surfaces you should get some PVA bagging materials and pleat it do you’ll be able to suck the bag down to the part with no voids

@@bellevuesnekkeri Well that's good to hear. Just figured I'd ask. You're one of RUclips's hidden greats.
Well thank you Sir for the kind feedback, it is much appreciated. Feel free to share any time:):):) Have a great weekend
Google says 20mil = 20/1000" (0.020"), but that 'gauge' is very inconsistent.
I guess a new bag is needed for each project?
No, the bag can be reused for as long as you can keep it from puncturing. Normally these last for years
Bellevue Woodshop I’ll have to give it a shot. I’d like to make one for fiberglassing.
It should work great for fibreglassing as well. Just make sure you tr to protect the bag from the resin getting all over it.
It depends on the material you use, but i could get stuck. Use some wax paper for protection
Why not just heat weld the vinyl sheet? Seems like that would be easier, quicker and probably stronger than the glue.
I was not aware of this option. Is it easy to do?
I've only done polyethylene sheet, which is lighter, but there are plenty of youtube videos on welding vinyl sheet like this, too. For Polyethylene, I've typically used an iron and some heavy paper and it's reasonably easy, but you need to be careful not to overdo the heat. Looking at other people online, using a heat gun seems more common with heavier sheet material like the vinyl you're using. I'd suggest doing a search for heat welding clear vinyl sheet and try it out on some scraps if you're planning to do more.
@@brettski74 dude that is unreliable and can have undetectable leaks
