DIY Veneer - Using a vacuum pump for veneering large panels

- I show you how I veneer large panels using a vacuum pump, vacuum bag, and plank sawn veneer to create a custom piece of plywood for use in furniture construction. Tools shown in video are vacuum pump, vacuum bag, Veneer glue roller, Titebond Glue, Blue tape, and a Festool cordless track saw. Veneer and pump were purchased from Veneer Supplies online.
you made it look easy, i know it’s not because i did a 3ft x 8ft fire door but had help from my son, good job
I have never heard of this style of veneer, thanks for the info! In Canada that plywood is known as MDO, Medium Density Overlay.
It's a great choice in breaking up the typical "veneer" look
thank you for posting this. Definitely my cup of tea as well. Reminds of my days as a apprentice in Germany. Especially the glue up roller. 👌🏻👌🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the awesome video, some very good info!
Thank you!
I realize that the "must veneer both sides" has been commonly said for decades - but I very much doubt it is true in most instances.
When building plywood it is true as you start with a core and placing more laminates on one side will cause warping... BUT...
Consider - if you are placing a 1/16" or even 1/8" veneer on one side of a 1/2" or 3/4" plywood - how is that going to warp it. The veneer would be more likely to crack or split before it would ever have enough strength to move the 1/2" or 3/4" of wood it is attached to.
4:09 - you can see the plywood is cupped slightly upwards.
5:29 - you can really see it.
8:20 - the glue or veneer on one side is not causing warpage. The plywood was already cupped, and it is easier to see when you flip it over and the cupping is now down instead of up.
Things get said, and repeated, and repeated... but sometimes we need to step back and consider it with common sense. It happens in a lot of things - especially woodworking and wood finishes.
In some cases, it could warp it, in most cases it wont.
That commercial plywood looked like it had slip matched veneer, not rotary cut. Slip matching veneer is what gives you that repetitive pattern. Regardless though, you produced a great, high quality panel here - good core, good veneers, & good assembly work.
Thanks for the info
It was
Thanks!
If I use a non waterbased glue like epoxy, would it be ok to do only one side?
Thank you for sharing! Very imfirmative. I hope I can purchase the vaccum kit if you can share the store link.
great video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video James. How do you keep you mesh netting from coming out when you pull the plywood out?
Is there any rules for placing smaller pieces around your platter? I’m going to attempt my first veneer bag press soon, two humidors pieces at once , the bag is 4’x8’
Nice!
I’m looking at the same Venturi pump. How do you like it? Deciding between that and a dedicated pump. I have a nice compressor setup so that’s why I originally considered Venturi.
I've used both, they both get the job done however the venturi is super loud until the full vacuum is achieved
Jim - Very good video. Who makes your scissor lift? I need one like that.
Thanks, it's vestil
Hey James, thanks for this video. I’m hoping to get a vacuum pump from the same company and am trying to decide between the EVSsystem or the Venturi. Is yours that Venturi? I guess the EVS doesn’t need the compressor but also the pumps run either continuously or off and on. Does yours work with the compressor and if so how big. Compressor r u using? Anyway thanks again for the great video (beautiful piece of veneer btw👍). Also, I saw you had the writing desk from the Epic Woodworking channel. I recently joined the “neighborwood” and love his teaching. I have that set of plans but am still setting up my shop. All the best, chris
No problem! Thanks for watching. I've got both types and the venturi can be a little more annoying setup
Awesome video. Thanks
I appreciate it!
If you are using 3/4” full MDF do you still need to do both sides?
Doing research for my upcoming veneering adventures and this was a great explanation. Lots of other videos say you need to sandwich it between other sheet material, but you just have a net for airflow on the top of the bag and It came out great. Is a second board on top redundant?
That’s right mate. Top is redundant if using a mesh breather
Do you mind sharing the brand and name of your scissor lift- do you recommend it? Thank you
Just the video I needed. What is the way to clean the glue applicator? I am considering putting it in a plastic sealed bag in between glue ups. Thank you again for the great video.
It comes apart into pieces and wash it up with hot soap and water. All of the pieces are mostly plastic (the hopper) and the roller is firm rubber or silicone. If the glue happened to fully cure before you washed it then the dried glue would just peel off. I have a smaller version of this roller I use for epoxy.
Hot water and soap work great
Do you recommend applying both veneers at the same time? Or is it acceptable to one face on day 1, then the second face on day? Will the warping go away?
I've done it that way with failure. I think before the glue cures would be acceptable but still not idea l
Thanks for sharing! Where did you get your glue roller?
Amazon
What type of plywood is that? Thanks
i’m not a fan of that ply because the internal veneers are overlaid rather than just butted, moisture could cause the ply to swell and crack the face veneer at the overlay
I purchased some combo-core walnut veneer plywood for the first time about 3 years ago and I didn't realize until I got home that it had that noticeably repeating pattern. I immediately hated it and as I loaded it back into my truck to return it i noticed that the OTHER SIDE had the better grain pattern!😅. I've purchased the same product a couple times since and now i know that one side is the "good" side while the other side is the side that looks like they used the photoshop clone tool haha.
Ha, too funny!
I’ll attempt to ask a question but from what I can see you don’t really answer your subscribers. Where did you purchase that plank matched veneer from? Thanks.

@@jameswesleyfurniturehell ya!! You answered. Thank you!!!!
Great video but looks like dude doesnt answer any questions on this channel.
Never do
