The Master in his element. One of my favorite songs. Someone once said to me there are no Tom songs you don't like, only ones you don't yet understand.
What a fine way to explain whats make me sobbing over and over. Have listened to Mr Tom For moore than 30 years now , seen him live on "Raindogs" And he´s lyrics pretty much defeny my lifestory..
A great thing about Tom is that he seems to perform in a manner that pleases him in the moment. That means you can hear his recordings and listen to a number of performances of the same song yet they don't always sound the same.
Most of his songs are essentially lullabies. If he sang them with a nice voice they would be absolutely cheesy. He knows he must camouflage the songs so that they have depth and pass muster with sensitive listener.
"...one is never completely certain when you drink and do drugs whether the spirits that are moving through you are the spirits from the bottle or your own. And, at a certain point, you become afraid of the answer. That's one of the biggest things that keeps people from getting sober, they're afraid to find out that it was the liquor talking all along." Tom Waits on drinking.
I was pretty stunned to find out that Tom Waits is a native of Los Angeles, that's the last place i ever would have expected him to hail from... I'd be honored if some Waits fans would take a listen to my acoustic keyboard & vocal RUclips performance of THE HEART OF SATURDAY NIGHT in tribute to the boss. Live acoustic with no digital enhancements. Peace out and stay safe.
There's actually a Cookie Monster mashup of God's Away on Business and Hell Broke Luce. If you haven't already seen them you should check them out - they're perfectly done.
WOW! Check out the drum player, don t recall his name ( anyone ? ) but when he appears on this video; please look at his eyes and his face expresions, i mean the guy plays with Tom and he is just triping out with the song and blowned from Tom s performance just like anyone of us!
To the unfortunate soul who cannot read the room, screaming CHOCOLATE JESUS, as delirious fans tend to do at these shows, may you find patience and peace, and listen to Frank's Wild Years some more for solace.
I like live versions of any singer. It is just so raw, but then again I have an extensive vinyl collection and love the imperfections. Mr. Waits is my fav live singer by far. I am sorry I do not have him on vinyl.
@brin3535 i shot myself in the face twice, and it still sounds great! a highly unusual voice, great music, and class a lyrics to top it all off, whats not to like?
Love Tom Waits, but I much prefer his voice on the recorded version. Just too difficult to listen to this version. That said, saw Tom back in the 80’s, one of the best concerts I’ve been to. If I remember right, Leon Redbone opened the show.
kowtpr187 Soa estranho, mas eu gosto pois é original, não conheço nenhum outro cantor com esse estilo, um grande exemplo dessa jeito é Bob Dylan que a pesar de não ter uma voz boa, é original e todo mundo o conhece pela voz
He's absolutely for real!! He's one of the most covered artists ever, sells out entire tours in 10 minutes and been going strong for almost 40 years!!!!
I love Tom Waits, and this song. But I have to say something about what I heard there. There was a time when his voice was his strength, his way to be original and great. But by now, listening to this, I just feel like I'm listening to a sick man mourning. What a pity... If you don't know this song lyrics and recognize them in this live, it's such an performance...
its 1 am and I am going through a Tom Waits binge..this man has been with me through the thick and thin..
Funny you say that, I'm in cottage country at 1:19am listening to this while I watch the meteor showers
It's 2:26

For the last 30 years this song keeps me going on. Of course it is Tom, but also the BASS. Those bass beats keep me on track.
It’s only 21 years old....
@@richardmcgowan7344 😊
@@richardmcgowan7344 Probably just felt like 30 years due to it being released in 1999
Tender Tom sings from a broken heart. Love you Tom. Thank you

The best Death Metal vocalist evarrrrrr! =D
I saw him in NYC on this tour! My most favorite concert of my life, and I went to quite a few.
I love this. Thank you for sharing.

How does a man who sounds like he smokes tires and drinks gasoline make such beautiful songs?
It is in a good manure that the best strawberries grow.
Simple .... he is pure genius !
Because his voice comes from his throat and from the depths of hell, but his lyrics come from his soul.
He’s a storyteller 👍
Most of his songs are essentially lullabies. If he sang them with a nice voice they would be absolutely cheesy. He knows he must camouflage the songs so that they have depth and pass muster with sensitive listener.

Truly a one of a kind, amazing and original artist
This song cures my soul every time ..
The Bass part always brings this song home for me. Perfectly played.
Just checking to see if this song still kicks the living shit out of me. Yep.
Tom's voice, (especially in this live version) brings me great comfort.
YES INDEED!!!!
Stealing a living.
Good ol' Tom. Always unloading some extra gravel off the truck for the live performances.

Man, a parody video of cookie monster singing this but using this same audio track would be fucking hilarious.
There's actually a Cookie Monster mashup of God's Away on Business and Hell Broke Luce. If you haven't already seen them you should check them out - they're perfectly done.
Saw the mule variations tour.. sept 99 at the beacon on broadway n.y.c...to dance like that 10 below..

Sung in the key of the Cookie Monster?
What's not to like? Tom Waits and his Cookie Monster like voice.
ESTÁ MUSICA É LINDA DE MAIS. 👍BANDEIRA DO BRASIL.

That's his son
There's something oddly soothing in his mix of gargly voice and sweeeeeeeet guitar pickin'.
Lovely Song ❤❤
Forever amazing
As I've felt before, great beauty doesn't have to be pretty.
Walking Dead season 3 episode 11 brings me here
Love you Tom!!!

Beautiful!! The musical answer to Charles Buchowski!! Love u Tom
very good!
Who is that on guitar? Ribot?
Il est allé loin et profond, en toutes choses : ça se voit, s'entend, et se ressent.
I think that's a Martin guitar, but what model???
Looks like it's a D-15M
000-15M, or 00-15M
Waits empezó cantando como en el álbum , después reaccionó y la transfotmó
What happened to all the Cookie Monster comments?!?
Epic death metal vocals
I sang like an octave above him and got goosebumps
Got to hold on, hold on...RAWR!
This big blue world !!!
come to ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
here come the Walkers!
Check out a song called "Nirvana",it is a Bukowski piece set to waits music, its great!
Great
That's the walkers singing if you know what i mean lol
One of those songs you can just relax and play guitar to. Hang on to notes and phrases longer or not, it just works.
Me in the shower than my throat gets scrtatchy after a verse fu lu
Insta like!!!
Why does this version sound like the Cookie Monster
there is nothing this man can't do
Country heavy metal for y'all
I prefer Tom's (whisper) voice on this tune....his grumble voice works better on Rain Dog type tunes..
think he smoked a pack of reds and drank a bottle whiskey before this performance....but I still love song!
I think there's plenty of autotune bullshit on RUclips you can listen to. If you need a link, ask the closest 12 year-old.

@ShaneMacgowanFan93 this is very true, but the show must go on i guess, each to their own!
Лучше Тома может быть только Билли Новик,исполняющий песни Вэйтса.
I smell vocal chords burning,,,,, 😲😲😲

@ShaneMacgowanFan93 you misspelled the word IDIOTS!!! You used too many letter!!! :3

Hold On....Rick and his team will win this fight against the governor the only thing what they have to do is Hold On so are we.... xD
1 person doesn't appreciate life.
wtf this is black dahlia murder style...or well i find voice way to heavy then its on record, like an orc xD but its still nice song!
the voice is heavy? thats what unique about Tom.
bangon son it's more the fact that I find it way different then it is on the record version, i am used to heavy otherwise ! still this is great song
bangon son
it sounds terrible...and he does the same thing when he does bottom of the world and other songs....No cookie monster mr waits....thank you
kowtpr187 Soa estranho, mas eu gosto pois é original, não conheço nenhum outro cantor com esse estilo, um grande exemplo dessa jeito é Bob Dylan que a pesar de não ter uma voz boa, é original e todo mundo o conhece pela voz
