This is 1981, at the Montreal Jazz Festival....it is from the soundtrack to One from the Heart. On the soundtrack, there is a montage of two instrumental pieces, Tango and Circus Girl, they run the pieces together. This is a live version of Tango. There is nobody quite like Tom, and I feel fortunate to have been alive to experience his 50 years of subtle genius.
The piano was quietly retired after this show and now lives peacefully in a home for the highly strung. She sometimes talks about the experience but only after a couple of beers and a joint. Do take care though, the nurses will throw you out if they catch you.
This is my favorite video to show my nieces and nephews come the holidays when we're shaking the dust on the grandparent's vibrobox and people complain "that's not how you play". Bullshit. That's exactly how you play - maybe with some pattern and idea, but they already have the technique down perfectly. It's my favorite thing.
The Montreal Jazzfest is probably my favorite to watch and listen to. I've seen him live at least 10 times but none were this early plus I always enjoyed seeing him play with Greg on bass.
yea my daughter turned me onto him about a year ago and he is mostly all i listen to now and i have tons of cds from other bands i will put one in for awhile but always come back to waits
i hope the piano has been drinking, caus that foot is hitting hard hahaha! Tom has always liked to get us out of our comfort zone wich became very comfortable along the years.... what a genius!
Thank the Lord for the likes of Tom and captain Beef heart they don't follow what's hip or what's the current musical in thing. They do their own thing and are all the more respected for it
He hates playing the exact same thing at shows, and he likes to shake things up, literally, at each show. Best example in my opinion would be “Lucinda” from the Glitter and Doom concert
The piano has been drinking. You'd drink too if Tom Waits beat you like a cheap rug! Yowsah that's some merciless piano ass kicking!! Fan-dabby-f*ckin-tastic!!!
I think this show is where Tom also plays kettle drums....amazingly, all to Pasties and a G-String. Why he never touched them again, after showing such mastery, I'll never know. How about that bass? I miss that sound in his later albums...the forward sound of the bass.
Does anyone of you know which year is that? Tom seems to be so young here! Great performance! I love the pose he's making at the end! His movements are just perfect.
In case anybody wants to learn the piano to the piece this is based around, you can find it here: ruclips.net/video/Y5IGN-OO1A8/видео.html Video has sheet music, and walks through the whole piece. Just found out that this tango was based on El Choclo, found a good video for how to play it, thought I'd save someone else the trouble by posting it here!
Forget Salgan, Pugliese and Di Sarli, this is the way to play the tango. It reminds me of Fresedo when he wanted to have some fun and played a fox trot. Or when I get some bullshit and use it to shine my shoes...
Only Tom Waits would have the guts to do this in front of a paying audience ! Pushing boundaries

Yeah he smashed the tango wit that , piano , there's literally nothing that can be done without mr waits version on TANGO , he owned it
This was good to know. Poor thing was slapped around like a $10. hooker on a Friday night.
This makes me smile like a total goofball. God, what a man. Or, rather, man, what a god.
or perhaps even better, not a god but an Odd lol
The name of this piece is "Tango Circus Girl", for anyone interested. 😎
What a great showman! Love the comedy and the drama of this performance! Tom Waits is a musical genius and amazing songwriter. Love it!
I am undone... This sound is unraveling to the soul...
I love how he curls into a Nosferatu position before the fade to black... Fucking love this genius man.
Wow, great reference. Good job pointing that out.

That piano probably went home and cried in the shower after this
This guy is a god.
tom waits never disappoints me oh god i love him
the king and god of music.
Greg Cohen: "I heard Mozart used to play so hard he broke piano strings..."
Tom: "Hold my beer"
Guess he's been holding that beer for a long time.
Bourbon
Gotta let out what’s been bottled up, then you crack open the beer.
@@indiemovie4life427 i doubt it, tom would never let alcohol go undrunken.
tom and the piano....best music from usa i know is tom waits....thanks tom you are so lovely
thank you for the music Mr Waits.

false notes have never been so beautiful and important
“To play a wrong note is insignificant, to play without passion is inexcusable” Ludwig Van Beethoven
i hope the piano has been drinking, caus that foot is hitting hard hahaha! Tom has always liked to get us out of our comfort zone wich became very comfortable along the years.... what a genius!
это уже не просто музыка, это отношения. Класс!
a truly magnificent man.
amazing I am a fairly new fan but i am completely addicted to his music now!
Sick and beautiful. Epic Tom Waits is epic.
Thank the Lord for the likes of Tom and captain Beef heart they don't follow what's hip or what's the current musical in thing. They do their own thing and are all the more respected for it
Fortissimo hell, this is FOOT-tissimo!
This guy is so good, I think he's bored with his own talent! That's why he goes to extremes.
You get it
Good point.
He hates playing the exact same thing at shows, and he likes to shake things up, literally, at each show. Best example in my opinion would be “Lucinda” from the Glitter and Doom concert
I have add this to favourites and watched it many many many times. This is awsome. Thankyou. x
A Genius!!
Hendrix lit his guitar on fire, Waits eviscerates his piano . . .
it's on youtube, montreal 1981 :)
It's like he reinvented the tango and piano at the same time.
thank you, I thought I could love no more than I already do yet .. . .
Grand artiste. Pas ordinaire mais extraordinaire. Je l'adore.
Impecable. Encontré mi elegía.
It's an instrumental track, "The Tango", from the soundtrack to "One from the Heart" (but he does quote "Tango till they're sore" briefly)
Saw Tom in 74 Tower Theather, explained " Who was the drunk,,drunk,,? Loved the drunk,,Still feel that way
only tom waits can beat the shit out of a piano and make is sound goddam amazing!
what a performance..
"piano is generally considered to be both a stringed and a percussion instrument"
thank you so much for this. a masterpiece.
Way too good.
Super musiker, heisse stimme ❤❤❤❤❤❤
WOW!! Loved it!
The piano has been drinking. You'd drink too if Tom Waits beat you like a cheap rug! Yowsah that's some merciless piano ass kicking!! Fan-dabby-f*ckin-tastic!!!
Love the Monk in his piano!
holy crap that was great!
Meanest funkiest tango I’ve ever heard
@BennyBobzify You make it sound so easy.... " Nah... Was wandering around at home and stumbled over this AMAZING PIECE OF MUSIC HISTORY...."
This is much more than nice!
Fantastic!
This, Ladies and Gents, Is my inspiration.
Tom Waits is why I do what I am doing today! :3
que bueno ésto, gracias por subirlo!
beautiful melody ---- smashing random keys
Just adding that the full name of the track is "Instrumental Montage: The Tango/Circus Girl". Awesome whatever it's called though. :)
It's impossible for me to watch this without stomping my feet.
Artist is an oft abused term for musicians not in this case. He walks through Monk's garden an emerges unscathed.
Spenser not many people can play the piano with their palms and have me enthralled about it
his fingers are a horror story
he is Enjoying so much while he Playing .. tahts called Real Artist ... He dont care wat other think .....
This tango number sounds like the one from the film he scored "One From the Heart".
+Minespatch the channel of course this is el choclo: the most famous tango of the world
+minoterino It doesn't sound like any version of el choclo to me.

Then, later that evening the piano could barely walk straight.
Does anyone of you know which year is that? Tom seems to be so young here!
Great performance! I love the pose he's making at the end! His movements are just perfect.
Montreal, 1981.
32 years
Till they’re sore!
Schräger liebenweter satyriker❤❤❤❤❤❤
Nice piece....Indeed! Thank you :-D
Tango till they're sore...
that's how you play grunge on a piano :D
Like a street version of Stravinsky
Amazing! How many piano does it take to learn stuff like this?
One piano per practice session as seen above.
Smashed it.
this is the best.
Tomas !! son un grossoo!!

Holy smokes.
Wow!🎉🎉🎉
That is indeed a nice piece.
Agitated but fuckin beautiful...
superb
I would love to dance this one
Forget Salgan, Pugliese and Di Sarli, this is the way to play the tango. It reminds me of Fresedo when he wanted to have some fun and played a fox trot.
Or when I get some bullshit and use it to shine my shoes...
This is amazing!!!! Please...more information. When? Were?
I'd like to see Rudolf Valentino dance to this - in a bar in Buenos Aries, preferably.
TO Jest A R T Y S T A , Wierzcie mi ,,,ARTYSTA PRZEZ W I E L K I E A
that's what tango meant to be
Do u guys think that tom waits made a pack with the devil
I think the devil made a pact with Tom :D
Vesela Simeonova lol
He smoked a pack with the devil.
