Tom waits writes some of the most beautiful songs that no one will ever hear. It's bittersweet but for those of us who find it. It's quite a wonderful diamond in the rough.
My all time favorate Vocalist , Had the Pleasure of watching him live one evening ..I spent 45+ years at Sea and his line in Matilda has forever been one of my Bi Lines as it fits my lifestyle all these years " A Batterd Old Suitcase to a Hotell someplace and a Wound that will never Heal" ..Thanks to Tom for his lifestyle songs . Great lyrics and stories of life .
Tom Waits is a Great American, a genuine Artist and a true Poet! He is so authentic and his songs so beautiful. The bands he's been playing with were excellent too. Hard to beat such features and professionalism. Thanks for the post.
The bats are in the belfry the dew is on the moor where are the arms that held me and pledged her love before and pledged her love before Chorus: It's such a sad old feeling the fields are soft and green it's memories that I'm stealing but you're innocent when you dream when you dream you're innocent when you dream Chorus I made a my love promise that we would never part I gave my love a locket and then I broke her heart and then I broke her heart Chorus Running through the graveyard we laughed my friends and I we swore we'd be together until the day we died until the day we died
I feel so lucky to have met him. I watched his concert from back stage and hung out with his wife Kathleen Brennan. She was the polar opposite of him. Where he is dark and grumbly she is light and bubbly. I remember being all calm cool and collected when I met him but was screaming like a girl at a Beatles concert on the inside. What a cool guy.
@@coreycox2345 I totally agree. They were like a yin/yang in people form. I've met and worked with many "big names" but these two were one of my favourites as their coupling is beautiful
" This is a song my dad taught me when I was a kid... that's a lie. This is a song I learned from some kids in the alley behind the theatre-- that's a lie too. I learned this from Gregory Peck-- that too is a lie. They're all lies. The whole song's a lie. No it's not." Brilliant.
each time I listen to toms songs I find something new in them and in me, even the rambling introductions are crafted by his grace and wit, and in this glorious threnody tom has transcended the restraints that limit mankind......and touched that thing which we call 'a soul'
I had a dream that I was getting ready to play a concert, but I could not find my guitar. As the crowd grew uneasy, Tom Waits stepped up to the the stage and said; "Man I'm about to cry."
This song is so sweet. There is only one Tom Waits and even if his music is not "mainstream", there are still enough people who are understanding and respecting his way of making music!
I wish he'd get his rump out ANYWHERE so we could appreciate his art/stories/love/whisky and wonder LIVE! A true original treasure for all of us to drink in. Thanks Tom.
I feel I'm a sprite, dancing in Tom Wait's garden after midnight... really I'm in the sweet, sweaty, living room of my apartment, dancing with ebb and tide just in jeans, barefeet and bracelets... and closed eyes, emotion... Tom carries a song like an emotion you weren't sure you wanted anyone to know about, and drags it lucidly but wet, down a mountain of hope... into a question mark. Leaves you there, walks off stage... I will appreciate his existence forever.
Don't you see and hear his uniqueness? Don't you marvel at his poetry, his humanness? Or if on the other hand you want to enjoy this man's talent as the Cookie Monster, go ahead and enjoy that too.
@LandoftheShanks Man you are not the only one! Im 24 and I love Tom Waits. He is original, he sings with the most amazing feeling and the most important he sings stories not songs. He is amazing!
I feel so blessed that I think this man is brilliant . I,m so glad I,m not coming on here and slating him as some people do.This man will remain one of the top 3 singer/songwriters, for the next 8 centuries. Immense !
Thanks for this...Really amazing...! Tom is a National Treasure a genius, original, prolific and my fav...He will be Playing in the lounge Bar "Hotel Believe" Berlin i Heard... Love Waits......

He's so sweaty and combined with the lighting and the video quality, he looks like a living oil painting. And his hat looks like it was buried in the ground. Beautiful.
I appreciate people covering Tom's tunes-I've done it myself, but really, I have a hard time listening to anyone else sing them. It's his delivery that's just as unique and moving as the songs themselves.
All of the great creators like this genius...are mostly underappreciated ..but not by me..Tom..and his Guardian angel..Kathleen..er St.Kathleen...such an amazing story for GOD
Yeah, it was actually me who included Van and Dylan when Tom asked me who my other fav songwriters were , and in my opinion these are the top 3.Tom waits though seems to hold my attention though like no other artist I,ve heard, he amazes me.On The Nickel and Tom Trauberts Blues are 2 masterpieces I can listen to all day! Genius full stop .
I got to do something cool with Tom. I'm working for promoters "The Gary's" in Toronto . One of the promoters,( friend Gary Topp) made a job for me. Gary knew I was devoted to Tom's work so, Gary says, "Go get him at the airport" Being a musician, Gary figures I'd be Tom's assistant. This is the tour behind "Nighthawks at the Diner" - the cover featuring Linda Rondstat's tush: ripe & round, back to the camera, in a diner. Tom was deep into living the whole "Grapes of Wrath" 24/7/365 during those years - I could smell him coming. Doors open, he stumbles through, hits a post, sinks to his heels, goes to sleep. I intro myself as his ride and assist, he says, "Hey, man, can you scratch me up a guitar? For Tom, I'd sell my sis into slavery! A Telecaster, '57 Martin D:18, Gretch 6120. Nope. I found this busted ass, dry old Gibson, B-25? Perfect says Tom. How much? $325 Cnd. And Tom just couldn't raise it. A very revealing day. He was intense, sincere - a decent guy. Amazing performer.
The other two may not have been born yet ,but if they have it would be Bob Dylan and Van Morrison ,but in my opinion this man outshines them both ,he,s the real deal ! But what do I know I,m only a tuppence ha,penny karaoke singer ! I do truly believe though your witnessing one of the greatest songwriting brains ever .
agree, dear Johnny (Mc)Cash! TomRAFC has a point, too, about including Van Morrison and Dylan among the greatest Had the chance to hear them live in Switzerland last year, (the former at the Montreux Jazz Festival) Both of them with stupendous performances
Ahh, that was great! It's almost bedtime on a Sunday night, and I've got school tomorrow, so I should probably shut this down and go to sleep! *Clicks replay* Okay, one more time...
I don't believe this! Brutal honesty......this is magic, am I dreaming? tears and my pillow now...better place on earth with Tom here! Goodnight.

He's like no one before him, and there will never be another him. Seen him live a few times and the guy is a genius with words and sounds.

It's a cliche that "behind every great man," but I have always imagined them working as one, Symr B. Their collaborations are beautiful.

I love Tom Waits and I love the smell of gasoline. For some reason, that statement explains it all in my mind!
Oh Jesus, Tom... How do you tug at my heartstrings so terribly? The American Jacques Brel.
The voice off smoke. A cloud for mine ears and mind. Love it.
Wishing the very TALENTED and ORIGINAL ARTIST, the GREAT TOM WAITS: A VERY WONDERFUL 😊 New Year--- 2023------- LOVE ❤️ Evelyn O'Connor
Tom Waits is the evidence that there is a Loving God who will provide Joy and Goodness to His people!!!
There will never be anyone else who moves me like tom,he's from another place I'm sure..!!!

You would never wonder who the singer was when gravel voiced Tom Waits sang. Great storyteller.
I had a dream that I was getting ready to play a concert, but I could not find my guitar. As the crowd grew uneasy, Tom Waits stepped up to the the stage and said; "Man I'm about to cry."
Great dream Michael...

Tom is my good night storyteller. He creates songs, like documentaries
Of all the world's ,history.
Why I love and respect him? He's the one and only singer who sings by his soul and he tears his and your souls apart.
He's got the melodies you never forget. Tom Waits is fantastic
Wonderful. Beautiful song and Tom is utterly peerless. Entertainer, poet and auteur - in that order.
I wish he'd get his rump out ANYWHERE so we could appreciate his art/stories/love/whisky and wonder LIVE! A true original treasure for all of us to drink in. Thanks Tom.
I hope I get to see him live once. Then everything is complete.
Bravo Tom W. eine stimme wie der sound eines der Guten alten Ford Mustang GT 1967 V8🍀🌻🍻
It's so beautiful that such delicate lyrics are crafted, dispersed from so un-delicate a voice.
it's a good feeling to know that younger folks dig Waits' art too!
WOW! Thank you for posting this..I have looked for this track here for years...
This touches the magic.
I worship Tom! I have traveled far to see him live. My dream come true.
look at his fingers
I simply love him

One of America's true musical geniuses!
true or not it's beautiful, fragile and flawed, whilst being over sentimental. Thank you Mr Waits....
Nostalgic.

Very beautiful. Quite "the real human hero", just like that. Thank you, for posting this piece of art
I play several musical instruments, mostly stringed things. I admire Tom Waits immensely, in fact I admire anybody who sings better than I do.
Simply perfect! A great song sung by a genius!
The one and only Tom Waits.........God broke the mould.......
WOW. GOD I LOVE THIS SONG. so beautiful.
Tom you are such a Beautiful soul
simply a poet!!! Thank You Tom
He's so sweaty and combined with the lighting and the video quality, he looks like a living oil painting. And his hat looks like it was buried in the ground. Beautiful.
He is a genius drumshan...theres no argument. Where most of artists today lack personality he has it in abundance.

What a song, and no other voice could do it justice.
I love the crackly video! Makes the whole thing sound like a vinyl.
Tom Waits is beautiful.
I'm in love with his Voice !!!
yeah tom you are the best and we are all alive so far
Is there another artist anywhere like Him?Tom Waits rules. He is unique.
It´s such a beautiful song...i loved it
What a unique voice......Love it x
This song was at the end of a Harvey Keitel Movie called smoke. It grabbed me and I needed to know who sang it.... and so began my love for Tom Waits
beautiful song. And love the Vaudvillian style here
You keep mentioning Tom in the past tense....did he leave us? OMG. I will light a candle and cry like a baby.
I know that taste in music is all subjective, but if you don't see pure art and beauty in this song, then you are seriously missing something.
Ever the true artist, and just as wonderful live {although I never had the privilage}
I can see myself in 30 or 40 years sitting in a tavern, nursing a glass of beer and singing this tune.
Meet You There. What a blast!.
i honestly think this is the best song ever written
As a singer, I get sympathetic vocal strain listening to Tom singing, but I have to because it's so beautiful.

Too bad about the "I'd sell my sister into slavery...." Otherwise, a nice story. .........
Guess Armand would sell his sister into slavery, as well. What the heck, even wonderful Tom Waits draws his share of creeps........
Get Real..... Waits is 1 of a small handful of genius songwriters to have come down the pike in decades......if not longer.
such a great and beautiful song, I loved it in "Smoke"
now THIS is music !!!!
brilliant song, brilliant singer

The wisdom belies the whimsy, and the whimsy belies the wisdom. Peace out
