"If you're not familiar with AK rifles..." If someone isn't familiar with AKs, they're probably gonna need an introduction to what a firearm is to begin with.
That's highly fucking offensive. What if I just don't like AKs, so much so that I refuse to figure out what commie magic makes it work.
What if I'm just a hard core AR guy and just don't even have the time to get into a new series of toys that at the end of the day are just comblok milsurp rifle.

@@callsignsleepwalker7231 your name is spelled wrong.
Shame the only people that will get this rifle for the next 20 years will be American civilians and Spetznaz.
Fun fact: The Prototype AK-12 also known as the "AK-200 series" has been used more in video games labeled as the "AK-12" than the actual AK-12 has.
A much better rifle from the looks of it. But considering that even the dumbed down officially designated AK-12 is too expensive for general issue, the chances of that prototype getting off the ground are slim sadly.
@@lilchlor1ne832 India just started manufacturing the ak203 as it's primary assault rifle.
@@homijbhabha8860 The current production AK-200 series of rifles is not the same as the AK-200 prototype that was slated to be adopted as the AK-12.
False
@@ranranpoopants source: "trust me bro"
The coolest thing is that 74 years later Russia is still using and further developing the AK platform. We've never had a service rifle platform for that long, none the less in almost the exact same profile and action as the infamous AK platform.. Well done Father Kalashnikov, well done
To be fair the M16/M4 platform isn't THAT much younger than the AK.
Also thanks to capitalism/defense contracts
That's true
Because a decade makes such a big difference... Also the AK has stayed the same, because the Russians don't have the same budget to constantly field new and improved versions.
@@Totemparadox yeah man but seriously have you seen the modern day AK rifles? They're laser beams practically. Very minimal recoil even with the 7.62x39mm cartridge, 5.45 aside. If it was up to me, and I had to outfit a bunch of troops on a rifle choice, I would sleep easy knowing I chose the modern AK over the AR family of rifles. Don't get me wrong I love AR's I own multiple, but AK's are so much more suited to battle conditions. You can't tell me I'm wrong. Each have pros and cons but in battle circumstances I'll take the AK's cons over the AR's...
To understand some of the design choices, think about operating a rifle in -30C weather, snow, thick wool mittens.
Severely underrated comment. Not a hater of the AK by any means, but have never looked at it from this perspective. Bravo, good sir.
@@Testostebro Yeah, they are great in the winter. Things like the AR15 mag release freeze, and they are simply unusable in Arctic conditions without ridiculous precautions. There is an alaskan test somewhere giving evidence of this.
All troops are in the Middle East right now and most Russian forces still use the AK74M as their standard military rifle so I don't think they would focus on the prospect of capability of cold weather
@@bigdawg6308 I've seen many AK 105s too.
Rashid Karimov what if your not in those conditions
Some missed points from Russian viewer here:
1. Those "spikes" on muzzle device also used for cutting(or rather shooting) barbed wire.
2. Muzzle devise connected to barrel through bayonet joint(not sure if correct translation) and not threaded like one on AK74. So it's not interchangeable.
3. In case he didn't make it clear - AK12 has free-floating hand guard. If you grip it with a lot of force - it will not affect your point of aim.
4. Magazine has a small flat section at the bottom that is parallel to the barrel, this way rifle is more stable when you rest it on the magazine. It also has indicator at the bottom that sticks out if mag is full, so you can check which one is fresh in the dark.
5. Hand grip contains cleaning kit - it's not a container for batteries or anything. Guys from military that already have their hands on AK12 say it's very easy to lose this kit.
6. Cleaning rod is in the buttstock tube in 3 pieces, so no container there either.
7. QD sling swivel made for this rifle is slightly longer, so you can't attach your sling swivel to AK12, but one made for AK12 will work with your magpul mount.
You'll never see an American saying that the AK series are 100% cool. For them there's only the M series and STANAG
@@LuisFelipy That's quite an assumption you have made there. And as I actually greatly prefer the AK series to anything related to the current US issued weapons, that would make your assumption wrong.
@@LuisFelipy Well they are the first to shout that an AK is "just a copy" of the STG-44 while they REFUSE TO EVEN NOTICE the obvious fact that the M16 looks and built much more closely following STG-44 mechanical concept than the AK. The irony.
@@mihan2d looks? Stg 44 looks a lot like AK to me.
Mechanically? My opinion is irrelevant there.
@@Ag3nt0fCha0s If you see both of them partially disassembled and the parts layout than you'll immediately see what I mean. M16 is built much more closely following the STG-44 "overall pattern" than the AK (while obviously neither of them are even close to being "just a copy"), that's not even worth denying.
One of the best rifles in bf4, glad to see it actually got adopted after so many years or testing and such. It's a beauty
Me & the boys excited to play with this in BF2042!
@@delbertvemarsomgudsen7389 yeah I hope it makes a return. Being a modern weapon I'm sure it will, or a futurized version of it. Looks like we get an ak24 or something from what I've seen of the play test stuff
@@thefuzzysheep3859 Seeing how the 74 and 74M are only now on the way out, the AK-12 will be the main rifle still in 2042. Maybe even in 2050 UNLESS the Russians go the US route with a hotter 6.5 rifle.
@@Totemparadox interesting. Hopefully we do see it in use or some version of it in the game then. I just love the rifle and the newer ak19 they've proposed

Its so neat to study Russian engineering. Because of the cold war they pretty much designed everything in a vacuum with the only outside influence being from espionage, which is a really slow way to get information into new designs. So from that, the West and the Russians came up with completely different designs coming at it from different angles. The Americans went for accuracy and ergonomics while the Russians went for cheap and ultra reliable. I hope I can go to Russia someday and learn some of the history of their military arms. I also wish I could get my hands on an actual Russian make AK.

It’s funny hearing that the safety selector is somewhat antiquated because the point is so valid that it takes a moment to come back to the trigger - but then you watch GarandThumb’s frozen rifle series and you realise that safety can break ice so easily vs the AR systems that on the balance of things (Russia being cold and all) it probably makes sense to keep it for a while longer 😂
During development, the AK-12 prototypes were at one point built with an AR-style safety. This was abandoned for the traditional AK-style safety, to criticism from AR fans. One of the stated reasons for the final AK-12 being more traditional than prototypes was reliability issues with more AR-like features during testing.
In general, a lot of criticism directed at the AK-12 comes from a very identifiably American-civilian point of view. This rifle was built to be manufactured for the Russian military. The regular infantry, to be specific (spetsnaz are issued more specialized rifles). The Russian infantry needs a very reliable rifle which is not complicated or expensive and functions well in cold conditions. It doesn’t need an overpriced sub-MOA rifle with potential reliability issues and compatibility with American stocks made for the AR platform.
American military rifles are good, but they were designed to meet American military needs. Russia while developing the AK-12 tried an American military approach and concluded it was unsuitable for Russian military needs. American civilian needs never even entered the equation. The AK-12, at 1-2 MOA is as accurate as any military assault rifle needs to be. It doesn’t need to take AR stocks or slings because Russians don’t use them. It’s not intended for special forces so IR pointers are less of a concern.
I don’t have a real AK-12 but have spent quite a bit of time with an airsoft replica (the one by Arcturus). The ergonomics, weight, etc are identical.
If I were designing an AK, there are only four things I would change.
1. I would reconfigure the firearm so it has one solid rail on top instead of a dust cover with rails.
2. I would bring back the AK-105’s stock locking system, I don’t like the wobble when folded.
3. I would put a quad-sided railed longer handguard on.
4. I would, if it’s possible to do reliably, replace the magazine well to one which can accept magazines inserted directly. I’m not a fan of rocking the magazine into place.

Russia released an updated variant in August 2020. It has a new grip, buttstock and some other changes. All existing AK-12 rifles will be upgraded to the new variant. You should try and get a hold of the updated version.
Why not just try to get the upgraded components and swap them on this rifle? I'd say it's much easier than making a whole new rifle out of already rare parts kits.
I think the main reason AK pattern rifles get a bad rap for accuracy, is because most of the AKs being used against us have outlived there serviceable life expectancy, by a few decades. Their reliability, and the fact that many of the users (in certain places) are children, are their own undoing when it comes to that reputation. While I was in Kuwait, some of the Teams guys were showing me some of the rifles they captured, and they were older than dirt, no finish left on the metal, wood furniture worn down to nubs, and shot-out barrels. Aside from that the Kalishnikov rifle is one of the best designs for a military rifle, and they sound fantastic (as long as they aren't being used on you).

Another thing about any AK design, Kalashnikov himself always insisted that extra bells and whistles stay off. So by not going with the spring release for example, didn't just save money it removed another part that could fail or make the gun more complicated to build/use.
In arctic conditions the mag release and forward carrier assist are the first to fail.

In my opinion, the prototype of AK 12 was much better than the production model. But the Russians abandoned it for reasons such as: complexity, expensiveness, etc., because simplicity and cheapness have always been among the main features of the AK series.
One thing that should be mentioned about the magazine is the flattened rear corner on the bottom, allowing for more stable firing while prone.
Papercut I didn’t even see that. Nice attention to detail. That’s something I always wondered why they never did that. Do the engineers not shoot prone enough?
@@patchesthehyena7825 Thanks, appreciate it, it's actually quite a valuable detail on the AK-12, most of the time a soldier fires while prone. The Russians really focused on practicality in combat, which is why to me I feel like details about fire selectors and magazine releases are secondary.
@@patchesthehyena7825 "why they never did that"
Because they never asked to. Russian AKs were always designed with the military's requirements in mind, which are rather strict, especially then it comes to the complication of parts.
@@speedyguydima how come only the generals or leaders know the mission and troops don't? Kill leader and you have a bunch of free kills so idk but not saying your wrong
@TheOtherWhiteBread0 CAF. The design on the AK-12 is fine with regards to magazine removal. It's not easy to do all of the fast reloads while laying down in a couple dozen kilogrammes of gear.

I hope the government quickly chooses the next generation rifle for our soldiers. Our soldiers need a rifle that is an over-match for anything the Russians produce. The Russians don't have a laborious acquisition process like we do. They just seemingly make the damn things and see which ones their military will buy. The AK-12 is one of many variants out there. It is only a matter of time before our guys and girls have to confront weapons like this. That new rifle with 6.8mm sounds great, but it just needs to be issued out sooner then later.

What's what is going on in this country I fully believe there are only two ways out of where we are. One, hand everything over and be like every other nation and become a total shithole. Two, do our duty as individuals in our nation. The only problem with this is that we must hope if this happens Russia or China backs the people and doesnt try to invade our nation in the process. If they decided to take an offensive position, we would be credited for starting ww3.

Agreed
1. prototype is more expensive to manufacture
2. less reliable than ak74
3. It is easier to make a tuning kit for ak74, than to change conveyor equipment for prototype manufacturing

AKs are only inaccurate for people who don't know how to shoot. At 100 yds, I get solid results with my Maadi's iron sights in comparison to my AR with ACOG. There's NOTHING wrong with AK accuracy.
And there is really no "good" place to mount optics on an AK. You're basically either looking at the handguard or the top, which is basically a glorified dust cover, both of which move around. At least with the iron sights, the front post isn't drifting off anywhere.

Another reason the Russian military is sticking with the AK format is operational reliability in extreme cold environments- as in minus 40 degrees F!
which is also the same in C
@@tangerinepaint3643 Oh I agree!
Cold will kill you faster than enemy in -40
Correction: minus 57 degrees F. It must be operational between +50 and -50 degrees C. And they test a few random rifles out of every single batch prepared for delivery for reliability. Modern AKs give 2-3MOA out of the box with basic military ammo. At least ones made on IzhMash.
Only reason they stick with standart AK format - is money. There are bunch of great rifles in the world, which are reliable in the same enviroment. And which they don't even look at.
