The VZ. 58 (VZ 58) is probably among my favorite rifles chambered in 7.62x39, and it has perhaps the most interesting history. It 100% showed the world the prowess of the Czech's to make a strong, simple and reliable weapon despite being a smaller country compared to the Soviet Union and their venerable AKM.

I’m from Slovakia, former part of CzechoSlovakia. We still have vz 58 in our arsenal, although civilians go more towards AR-15 these days. Source of cheap, surplus vz 58s and ammo is gone.
Anyway, you know the word Pistol came from Czechs? Yeah. In medieval times, there was an uprising against the church which they wanted to be reformed (same as Lutherans later). Warriors of the group called “Husite” (named after reformer Jan Hus) used a pipe filled with gunpowder and rocks, which they called “píšťala” or translated “a flute”. Now from word Pistala you know where the word pistol came from. Also word robot is of czech origin, coming from a book of czech writer Karel Capek, named RUR or “Rossum's Universal Robots”.

My Czechpoint/ CSA Sporter (VZ-58) has used 4,200 rounds of ammo. I bought the rifle here (in the US) in 2019, nib / new-in-box.
Zero issues, very high quality! 98% of the ammo has been fed from only two (2) plastic magazines..Even these magazines are still very rugged and 100% reliable.
My wife "Mrs. Liederlover" and I drove from Munich to Passau last September, then to Cesky Krumlov. This is in the southwest area of the Czech Republic.
Very nice medieval town with friendly, hospitable people. We stayed on the main street in the Old Town.
A military surplus store on Cesky's main street, near the Castle, keeps a deactivated VZ-58 outside the front door during business hours.

Greetings from Czech Republic. We do not took any construction issues from AK for doing vz.58. Externally the vz. 58 resembles the look of AK, but its completely diferent gun. As you already know, vz. 58 has short-stroke piston, different bolt locking and firing mechanism+accessories like magazines, bayonets and others. It shares no parts with AK. Vz. 58 is sort of evolution branch of the vz. 52 semi auto rifle, which was formerly ussed by border guards and is still worn by Czech and Slovakia Castle Guard. Both of these guns supposed to be in different cartridge than 7.62x39mm. Originally were constructed in more powerfull Czech made cartridge 7.62x45mm, but we were forced to use 7.62x39mm.. Czech here :D Vz. stands for VZOR, in english Mk. - mark 58. It is always nice to hear something nice about a product from our country. From my point of view, the best thing about this gun is its simplicity. During one of our workshop in students organisation, I had to disassembly and assembly it. I did it once normally (my first time ever), second time blindfolded. Due to small amount of moving parts, blindfolded one took me just 58 seconds (no pun attended, just coincidence). :)

The Czechs are honestly probably my favorite country in firearms design. They made the VZ-52 rifle for Soviet conscripts but when the rifles showed up alongside the ammo from another Eastern Bloc country, they werent even the same caliber. (The rifle was chambered in 7.62x45) they had every intention of chambering their delayed roller blowback pistol in 9mm but were told "NYET!" and had to put it in 7.62 tokarev. The 58 is the epitome of the Czech people giving big middle finger to Russia. Just like they did 10 years after this design was complete, when they protested Soviet occupation. They, to this day, still loathe their own government that has deep ties to the Communist Party. I love these people lol

I don't know why you were offended by Russia, but I can tell you that no one showed us the middle finger. And rightly so, for few can withstand more than one nuclear warhead.

Great rifle. Sadly, banned here in Canada along with all our modern semi autos May 1st 2020. They have to be handed in or destroyed. Don't ever give up the fight for your firearms/self defence rights.

I did my my national service for Armed Forces of Slovak Republic. This weapon was a great joy to train with, maintain it, disasembly&assembly super fast. I remember ending up no. 8th out of 160 fresh recruits on the shooting tests. Night shooting in a snowy winter using lighting bullets was also cool.

Excellent firearm I've got 3 in fact. One 10" in 7.62 one 10" in 5.56 with the AR mag conversion and a long 18" in 7.62. So many good high quality aftermarket parts made for them that a guy can totally have different setups. The long ones aren't chrome lined tho...found that out after a few mag dumps!

Wow. I never liked this specific version of 58 with this incredibly short barrel but DAAAMMNN - it looks deadly AF with silencer on.
Also, thanks a lot for this review. As a czech patriot, I learned to love VZ58 (even though the original design/aesthetics is ugly AF) and have always been looking forward to you reviewing this gun. Too bad you could not show burst fire... VZ58 has beautiful and sexy rate of fire. Simply love it. It cuts any target in half.

Yes "Strikeback!" Loved that show! I was like, man i never wanted a VZ more than i did watching them use those in that phenomenal show. The newer ones weren't quite as good, but were still pretty fuckin awesome imo. Definitely that 1980's/90's-esque goofy over-the-top vibe, along with almost as many sex scenes as it had shootouts. Great show. I miss it

The 7.62x45 cartridge of the CZ52 rifle is such a well balanced combat cartridge. If only the Chechs had chambered the CZ58 in that caliber! The CZ58 design is hampered by the 7.62x39 cartridge since it's actually a more accurate rifle than the AK. The CZ58 in 7.62x45 would be the bomb.....

  • @CzechoslovakGunStories

I always say it is a kind of a compromise between the AK and AR platform. It is a bit more ergonomic and lighter than the AK but still soldier-proof and built like a tank... :) Should I choose one gun for SHTF situations this would be it :)

That weight savings vs the AK platforms is actually pretty cool. Definitely like the manual of arms, last round bold hold feature, and the safety more so than the AK. One or two of these rifles will be making it's way into my collection in the future.
