    One hint about your small complaint about the VZ mags being more difficult to load than an AK. If you look at the VZ bolt face, there is a rectangular notch cut in the face. That is the same width as a 7.62x39 stripper clip, and is, in fact designed to be used to load the VZ mag. Put an empty VZ mag in the rifle, pull the bolt back to lock it in place, push full stripper clip down through the bolt face slot, and push the rounds down into the mag. Voila! The VZ "speed loads!" Just one more thoughtful design innovation the Czechs engineered into the VZ.

    It's true AK-47s are prohibited in Canada, which doesn't make any sense as the CZ V58 is an unrestricted rifle. Restricted guns have to be registered with the government e.g. hand guns and AR-15s, etc. Unrestricted guns do not require registration. So, the AK-47 is prohibited, my AR-15 is restricted along with my handguns, and the CZ V58 is unrestricted. So, can you tell the people regulating firearms don't know firearms?

    • @fdsdh1
      @fdsdh1 9 лет назад +43

      +Matt Cole be glad they don't, in the UK they tick every box and check it twice, there are no loopholes.

    • @fdsdh1
      @fdsdh1 8 лет назад +6

      *****
      there is a Vz 58 with a mars action trigger which is pretty cool. It is sort of semi-auto but still compliant. You need to pull the trigger twice for each shot. After each shot the action locks open, then pull the trigger it locks closed, pull it again and you fire.
      ppl have straight pull Ar15s, but tbh they are completely pointless and overpriced compared to other bolt actions.
      There are less rules on suppressors and stuff too. And most restrictions on handguns only applies to centrefire, so you can get BP revolvers (idk about BP pistols though).
      (all with an FAC ofc)

    • @matthewdeancole
      @matthewdeancole 8 лет назад +24

      You should know that the civilian models of the AK-47 available to the public do not go full auto just like the civilian models of the M4/AR-15 are only semi-auto. No full auto or burst fire. So, the civilian models of the AK-47 are no different than a SKS or CSA V58 - semiautomatic rifles that fire the 7.62 x 39 round. Again you should know this.

    • @matthewdeancole
      @matthewdeancole 7 лет назад +33

      Unfortunately it isn't the Canadian government who is determining what is un-restricted, restricted, or prohibited. It is the RCMP, who have no constitutional authority to do so. The RCMP is there to enforce the law, not dictate it.

      Stephen N: The Vietcong used both AK47 and VZ58. Czechoslovakia was a communist state and supplied North Vietnam and Vietcong with weapons. Yeah, and a ceirtain ingredient of Agent Orange (2,4,5-T) was also produced in Czechoslovakia. So we may say that Czechoslovakia fought alongside and against Vietcong in the same time.

    Do you know guys, that this rifle is actually a submachine gun? Its called "Samopal vzor 58" or "Sa VZ 58" for short. And "samopal" translates to SMG. This is not a mistake, but intention. We were not allowed to produce and use AR because of the Warsaw pakt. So we called it a SMG and problem was solved. :D

    • @JozefBogin
      @JozefBogin 8 лет назад +70

      The reason this was not called an "assault rifle" (as it should have been) was, because the ČSLA in the Warsaw Pact fought for "peace and socialism". Hence, no "peace-loving" force has "assault" weapons in their inventory.. :)
      But you're right, the term Samopal means an SMG or a machine pistol nowadays. Back then, the term was used to describe any automatic small arms, except machine guns. The name "Samopal vzor 58" literally means "Self-firing [gun] pattern 58".

    • @petervansan1054

    As far as your issue with loading the magazines on the VZ58 goes, the clip guide installed on the bolt allows you to charge your magazines with stripper clips like you do on an SKS or a Mosin, with the added benefit of the magazines being detachable in case you have a malfunction with the magazine.

So to compromise, I say leave it to the states. If a majority liberal state doesn't want guns, let them ban it. If a majority 2nd Amendment state wants guns, let them keep them.

However, a rusty gun made in 1970 got us through about 340 rounds of semiautomatic before the receiver stuck open, we gave it a kick and had no malfunction since. It just shows how genial the Czechs were at designing and manufacturing firearms. And boy you should try the vz61 škorpion.

So this gun still bears a laboratory name of "samopal vzor 58" or "submachine gun model 58" I believe it would be translated. And many people think including me that it is a Czechoslovakian variant of an AK. I did not know the details behind it that you have mentioned in this video.

The AK-47 and all variations appear to be prohibited, so one needs to be creative in the AK-type firearms that they procure, or risk the RCMP taking them away. Valmets and VZ-58s or 2008s are very sought after, everyone and their dog has an SKS.

    I have this rifle. It's my favorite shooter. I even prefer it to my Daniel defense ar. The balance is perfect, and it lays on the shoulder perfectly with no adjusting. Plus, with the triangle shape dust cover, it literally lined up on target just by looking down the rifle. For quick, off the cuff shooting, I've never shot anything better. For running rifle courses, I use my DD. For defense, I would grab my VZ first without hesitation..
    On a side note. I installed the ambidextrous safety, and mag release. If a red dot is wanted, get one that is co-witnessed. Gave me the best of both worlds..

    Hickok up here in Canada the Vz 58 is the closest we will ever get to owning a AK 47 since our government has deemed them illegal for importation sale and even owning one on the grounds of it can be easily converted to a full automatic weapon even if made for semi auto fire

  • @jm9371
    @jm9371 7 лет назад +5

    I live in Canada; Hickok is correct, AK's are prohibited here because they are an 'EVIL' gun.. even though they fit the same criteria as many guns with the same characteristics. It is just a paradigm that people have, if you have an AK, you must be a terrorist even though you can buy any gun with the same lethal potential.
    I really enjoyed watching this video as I have a CZ 858 on order. The VZ 58 imports were also prohibited initially, but the RCMP has deemed that they are not easily converted to full auto, so i want one before they change their mind again. In Canada, they come with 30 round mags that are 'Pinned' to 5 rounds each (maximum allowed on a semi-auto rifle in canada). Sounds silly as a pinned mag can be easily unpinned but it becomes a prohibited device... Like a terrorist cares. So our goofy laws regarding magazine capacity make little sense.

      A bit late, but that bolt staying open has a purpose: if you aren't using spare magazines to reload it, you can use SKS stripper clips to just load directly into the magazine. Keeping the bolt open makes one less step in reloading if you're doing that.

    Hey hickok45,love the vids. I'm a Canadian and I own one of these for some years now. You can get them like the one you shot here but it would fall under the restricted class.I made sure I got the non restricted model ( about 2 inches longer in the barrel). They call it a CZ 858 Tactical. You can take non restricted guns out to the sticks and shoot them. Restricted guns can only be fired at a range and prohibited are just that except for some old timers that still have some full autos until they pass on. It is a real nice gun.Very reliable and fun to shoot.The AK47 is prohibited here and it makes no sense. Same round,same all around look,still would have a 5 round cap because that's all we can have here for semi auto center fire. I also just this month got a Type 81 which looks even more like an AK than the CZ 858 and also fires 7.62x39. Find a picture of a CZ 858 a AK47 and a Type 81 side by side and tell me what's the big deal with the AK........Nothing. Just one of our dumb Canadian gun laws that make absolutely no sense at all. Keep up the good work on them videos and be safe.

    I think the VZ-58 is probably the better overall rifle. The AK just has ease of manufacturing and parts commonality on it's side.
    I remember being so excited when hickok released this video. It's hard to believe that was almost two years ago. Time flies, man. : (

    ive had a few of these here in Canada. Great shooting firearms and very reliable. AK's are prohibited by scaryness factor but having one of these make it sting a bit less. Great video!

    Recently got one. By far beats the AK at its own game. Feels incredibly solid and well made, but also so compact and light that you almost forget it’s chambered in 7.62x39 and not .22lr. You have to hold one yourself to realize how much smaller, more ergonomic, and lighter it is than an AK. Awesome rifle. Also accurate and very durable. Would recommend getting a Czechpoint made one over the CAI parts kit imports

    It’s cool how this is like a legitimate alternative to an AK. Being a different weapon but with the same purpose, cartridge, and general form/aesthetic. With its own benefits and availability in some AK-ban areas to boot. Feels like it’s from some weird alternate reality or video game
