    I am honestly shocked that this worked! I paid $190 for a reconditioned unit when mine had the blinking red light and that unit just did the same thing. I kept my old unit in the hopes that I might be able to take it apart and fix it. So, I tried this and my granddaughter is watching Netflix on it as we speak! Thank you so very much for the post.

    I just wanted to say that I just recently experienced the YLOD. My Playstation 3 was one of the original 80 GB systems. I've had it for 7 years to the day when it started the YLOD. I had the same situation as you did. A game in the console and my precious data held hostage. I looked up a lot of videos and read a lot of forums on the subject and was worried that I was going to be forced to disassemble my PS3 and reapply the thermal paste to the CPU and GPU to get my data and game back. I saw this video and decided to give it a try. It took me 3 different attempts to get it to finally work. The first time I heated it for 15 minutes and cooled it for 20 just like the video but it didn't work. I think it's because my machine didn't get hot enough. So for the second try I put it in a box with a towel over it. Heated it for 15 minutes and cooled it for 20 minutes (towel removed from the box during the cooling process). It came on long enough to get the game out and then promptly started the YLOD again. For the third attempt I once again used the box and towel but this time heated it for 20 minutes, cooled it for 10 minutes in the box (the towel removed), took it out of the box and cooled it for another 15 minutes, placed it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes, and lastly took it out of the refrigerator and let it air cool for another 15 minutes. What can I say? I wanted it to be completely cooled. So far it's been working fine. I was able to sync my trophies and move my data to a USB. I'm on my way to buy a new PS3. I just wanted to thank you for this video. It really did help me out and for anyone who tries the steps in the video and it doesn't work the first time try it a couple more times and vary your heating times. It might be that you're not getting your system hot enough for this to work. Also make sure that the machine is completely cool before start up. Thanks again and God bless.

    I know a lot of the comments are looking for details past a single “it worked!” comment so here’s mine- it did work, and my CECH-E01 backwards compatible model was well and truly YLODead. I used my hairdryer on a slightly lower speed, for 17 mins, and left a box fan to cool it for 20 mins. I’m still playing it and it’s holding well, PS2 and PS3 games still make my fan very loud, but PS1 and some PS3 games like Sonics Ultimate Genesis Collection don’t max out the fan.
    I’m currently playing Skate and the system has been on for 3 hours without issue.
    Will update this comment when it dies!

      fatpreacherman - thanks for the tutorial!
      Unfortunately I’m here to say it died the next day...likely because I did a full system restore to start fresh which took 5 hours, that was 5 hours of gaming time I could’ve spaced out in small bursts.
      I’m going to try the method again and hope for the best!

    I can't believe this worked. My PS3 was put in a cupboard 3 years ago after the flashing red light came on and no sign of life. I tried this as a last resort before making the decision to through it away. I tried the hairdryer trick for 5 minutes (because I was impatient) and it worked...for a few minutes. I then tried for the full 15min plus cool down time and I still can't believe its working. THANKS

    SUCH A LIFESAVER !!! I tried it and it worked like a charm with just one cycle perfectly for about eight months, it just happened to me again so I had to look back to this video to repeat the steps and I'M FINE with taking care of this once every 8 months hell, its free AND works so why not !? this is one of the greatest fix it yourself hacks!! thank you again so much for posting this!! 😇

    • @MirandaBlood1987
      @MirandaBlood1987 9 лет назад +2

      BTW: There is another way to get the Disc out even if you already have the YLOD!
      1. Switch the console OFF (Button on the backside! Not just Standby-Mode!)
      2. HOLD down the eject-Button (until step 4!)
      3. Turn the console ON (Again: Button on the backside!) and wait until you hear the fan (it's really loud, don't panic!)
      4. Press the eject-Button repeatedly (about once per 1.5s, no buttonmashing!) until the disc comes out
      I found it in the official sony manuals, but can't find it anymore.

    My poor PS3 has finally bit the bucket. It ran like a champ though, it was an original 60gb fat ps3. Good thing I have PS+ and all my saves are in the cloud. I guess that in itself was worth the fee.
    Edit: Tried this method and it worked perfectly! Was able to get my game out and back up all my data. My new (refurbished) slim should be arriving in a week. Hope it lasts another 8 years.

      You can still do this to the original model ps3 and get it revived but it isn't a permanent fix and you're better off using the time it still works to back up anything like saves so you can continue after replacing it.
      This was an old comment I made I'm surprised I still get notifications for it. I still tamper around with ps3 systems here and there so I'm able to say it still works and your mileage may vary with how long you manage to revive the system for, I had about 5 months of extra life before it gave out

    I did this with a towel wrapped around my PS3. it took a total of about 7 or 8 attempts. after the 4th attempt I was able to boot my PS3 but only lasted about a couple minutes. after trying it several more times I was able to keep the PS3 up long enough to do a backup of my all saves. woohoo! that's all I wanted. drove to GameStop and bought a slim 250 with a free game and an extra controller for $160, killer deal. thanks dude, this saved me big time... lots of save data recovered.

    After the first try my PS3 turned off again after a minute. Long enough to eject my game that was stuck in there. Second time it wouldn't turn on. After each power press the red light just keep blinking. I thought maybe it was too hot so I cooled it down by pointing a small fan at it. About three minutes. I plugged it back in and it worked.

    IT WORKED!!!!! I have a fat PS3 from 2008 - great console - never had an issue with it and I logged heavy hours on it! I loved it so much I got a PS4 but the lack of quality games lead me back to playing my PS3 - after of over 500hr of Dark Souls 2 I got the dreaded YLOD / blinking red light - I never backed up my data like an idiot and thought all was lost - saw this video and thought I would give it a try - I pulled the hard drive and wrapped it in a towel - approx. 16 mins of blowing in the rear vents and then popped it in the fridge for 15min it actually turned on - got about 5min into my backup and it failed - 2nd attempt same thing but I used blow dryer for 21min and put it in the freezer for 10 and then fridge for 10 - let it sit for a couple hours and whatta ya know! it worked! fired up like a champ! got all my game data off it and powered it down! Sony will replace it for $80.00 - not a bad deal considering my first one lasted for 6yrs - THANK YOU FPM! this video was a life saver!!

    FYI---IF you want to just retrieve a stuck disc then.....1.Turn off power in back. 2.Hold down eject button and power button in front at same time while turning main power button on back of system to the on position. This should temporarily turn system on long enough to push eject button to retrieve disc! it will only stay on for about 10 secs!

    fatpreacherman, thank you so much! I had a very old 80gb reverse compatible PS3 that just yesterday received the dreaded YLOD. When I googled it a number of options came up. I ended up not tempting fate and immediately traded it in for $75 after retrieving all of my game files. Thanks again!

    With the thermal compound dont forget to replace the thermal pads and to reflow/reball the board also (since you are going to have it open).
    Also, I don't take Jesus as a joke, nor do I joke when I tell my viewers that I hope Jesus will bless them, and if Jesus can fix a broken down shell of a man like me, I can't even imagine the wonders He could do with a broke PS3, probably turn it in to a portable version of the PS4!

    Ok, I did it twice already. Heated for 15 and cooled for 20. In fact it got worse. Back then I could've gotten to the XMB and now I can't even do that. So I guess I am in the 30% failure. Is there ANY way to save data you know of?

    • @JaWa-ob3xk
      @JaWa-ob3xk 10 лет назад

      Wolf Lovel Then it says you have to format. which will delete all the system storage... So where from there. How can you even save the data then?..

    • @BenandNikki
      @BenandNikki  10 лет назад +1

      Jacob Watts If you listen to my commentary on this video, what wolf told you will not work. The data has to be saved/moved from the ps3 that it was created on, so if your system is down YOU MUST GET IT TO WORK at least temporarily and then move the data, that hdd from the system is useless, unless you don;t mind loosing the data and just want it for a hdd in another system. If my method doesn't help you may need to take it to a computer repair shop, or do the full repair (reflow/reball).

    The problem is that the thermal compound/paste is old and not conducting well. You need to open up your PS3 and remove and replace the paste/compound from the GPU and CPU on the mother board. The problem with the old paste/compound is that it's over heating the PS3, which causes the PS3 to flash telling you that the system is over heating. Thermal paste/compound can be from 3-10 dollars which isn't that much. It's an easy fix.

    • @_-_.7
      @_-_.7 10 лет назад

      This in context of someone that has a yellow light, not just flashing. The red flashing usually is a sign of a over heating system if you didn't know. This method fixed my PS3. The thing is that every type of system is completely different, so the repair might be different on your end.

    What i did is, unplug the system, remove the HDD or you'll damage it, use the hairdryer during 15 minutes, let it cool off for 40 mins (20 mins was still pretty hot).
    Before you even think on turning on the console, PLEASE PUT YOUR HDD IN YOUR CONSOLE, so it won't try to format it.

    IT WORKS! I have a modified PS3 80GB Fat CECHE01 reverse compatible version with an 500 GB hard drive currently in it. I had the RLOD last year. So I did send it to Sony to get it fixed. Well after an ENTIRE YEAR it crapped back out on me. Of course, Sony wanted another $130.00. So desperate times, bring desperate measures. I did however, use an commercial blow dryer like the Hair Salons have by Tools Science. Instead of, using the cooler on the dryer it was still kind of hot. So I took the advice of the guy with the refrigerator deal. Popped it in for 25 minutes actually. Got it out pulled in the hard drive, booted it up. And BOOM... It was on. 6 HOURS and 30 MINUTES to backup and transfer all my data to my external hard drive. And that bad boy is still getting it. Best damn 1 hour I spent every using Cajun ingenuity. Thanks you very much fatpreacherman I really appreciate it. I very HAPPY Pharrell Williams - Happy (Official Music Video)‎ and content. Because, I have all my CONTENT!! (Get it) Thanks once again!

    This got my PS3 phat working long enough to get my data off! I tried it once and it only worked for a few minutes before dying again, but on the second attempt it stayed on for a few hours - long enough to get a full backup and get PS Plus to get my saves into the cloud. It's still working I suppose, but I don't have a lot of faith in it continuing to work for much longer.
    Anyway, thanks for the video!

    Hello!
    I followed your indications exactly (console placed upside down, hair dryer across the back vents, 15minutes hot, 20minutes cool), and it worked - the console is running now, no more YLOD :D.
    I don't know how much it will last, but I will stress test it in GTA5, for a couple of hours, after replacing the thermal pads and thermal paste. To be honest, I was not confident that this solution would actually work, but it did.
    A note to people that plan on trying this: I used my hair dryer on max flow and max temperature settings for 15 minutes, as indicated. This caused the top (if the console is placed in vertical position) plastic case part to warp slightly, due to the heat. Your mileage may vary.
    @fatpreacherman Thank you again for this video! :D

    Actually worked. Failed on the first, blow dried for 15 then let it cooled naturally by the window for an hour. Next day tried again, blow dry for 15 on high then cooled it with the dryer for 20 on low. Hopefully lasts until I get the super slim model. Thanks for the video

    Worked for me. Just came alive. Not sure how long it will last, but thanks for the hope.

    This works. I just did it today. I used the hair dryer for a total of 20 minutes with a 1minute break every 5 minutes. Then let it sit for 1hour outside in the cold.
