    WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS BELOW!
    Hey, I just had this problem, and I was able to fix it. I was told I had to pay $150 for a repair, and they will just give you a refurb and it will eventually do the same thing. It is similar to the towel trick for the xbox 360. So here it goes.
    1.READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING:
    2.You need to take everything out of your playstation 3 BOX, (foam, plastic, etc...).
    3.Put your playstation in FACING DOWN so that the back vents ARE FACING UP AT YOU.
    4.Take a hair dryer and turn it on HIGH, (I had mine running at 125 volts).
    5.Keep the hair dryer blowing into the back vents for 15 minutes, taking a 1-2 minute break every 5 min
    6.just go BACK AND FORTH( Really important) across the back vents. and keep the blow dryer about 4 to 5 inches AWAY FROM PS3
    7.After that, put it in front of a fan or A/C vent,fridge,or fan for about 40 minutes, or until it is cooled off.
    8.Then plug it in, and it should work. and keep it on top of a damp wet rag
    9. If It worked SUBSCRIBE! IT HELPS! Or just watch more of my videos! There Cool. Its the least you can do after me fixing your ps3!
    The reason you do it in the box, is that it traps the heat in the system. What you are doing is creating a conventional oven inside the system.
    Why does this work???
    Because of current laws, electronics are now made with lead-free solder. It is poor quality and is vulnerable to cracks, and once there is a crack, you get the yellow light. When you use the blow dryer on it, it gets so hot inside you actually melt the solder and when it cools it hardens back up with no cracks. I was mad when they told me they couldn't do anything but make me pay $150. This was an easy fix.
    P.S. Be safe, and write back to me to let me know if this works.

    Please don't do this. This is terrible advice. Generally, YLOD happens because the solder that connects the GPU to the motherboard goes bad. The connections break.
    This method "works" because it remelts the solder and allows to reform a very temporary bond with the moptherboard. It also exposes the internal components of your PS3 to very dangerous levels of heat which is very bad for it. If you do this enough you WILL fry your GPU. Guaranteed. It may happen the first time or the 10th time. But it will happen and make it more expensive to fix. It needs to be reballed by someone with the proper equipment.
    Also, rigging something to work long enough to sell it is completely sleazy.Don't be a dirtbag.

    • @Chris619mx
      @Chris619mx 9 лет назад

      Can I just re solder it?

    • @davidveilleux944
      @davidveilleux944 9 лет назад +1

      You can, but you need specialized equipment. It's called reballing. You need to heat the chip to a specific temerture, lift it from the board, take the old solder off it, clean it, attach new solder balls to the chip, clean the pads on the motherboard and then put the chip back on the motherboard. It takes about an hour.
      If you search youtube for PS3 reball you can see how it's done. Honestly, it's much cheaper to buy a new PS3 or pay someone to reball it than it is to buy all the necessary equipment

    Fat PS3 RLOD'd on NYE:-( Followed instructions (fan, hairdryer) but used my PS3 box instead. Worked perfectly! You can see the plastic vents have bobbled slightly, but nothing major. WOW. Had my doubts but this actually worked! Wrapped my PS3 in a towel, blow dried it for about 5 min. It got super hot. Set it outside in the cold. 30 min later hooked it up and it started. It did the thing where it said it wasn't shut off properly, but then started up fine. Let's see how long this lasts.
    Anyways, thanks Lanier.

    Dry or cracked solder points. From what I recall, Sony decided to use lead-free solder (as did Microsoft in their 360s; Red ring of death is caused by this as well) and it's caused no end of trouble.

    You can get a disk out of the non-slim consoles, also may have to be an 80GB model (Im not sure). Turn it off via the switch on the back, hold the power button on the front and then flick the switch on the back back on. This will start the fan test, while the fan is running press the eject button. (So I don't get haters and such, I know this works as I used this technique on my 80GB console, when it got the YLOD)
    May work for the slim, but i dont know how to start the fan test.

    The YLOD is a common fault with the Piano shaped Playstation 3's. You might as well either try to sell it (if it still works) or throw it away (if it has the YLOD) because there's no permanent fix for this problem. You have to buy a Playstation 3 Slim or Super Slim as Sony have built the newer models a lot better! The exact same thing goes with the Xbox 360's aswell.

    This worked for me so I want to give a big thank you! I have a question/idea though. I noticed that the PS3 had to be upside-down for this fix to work and am wondering, would using your PS3 in the upside-down way i.e. playing games with the console upside down, help the PS3 from returning to a YLOD state? Or even on it's side??

    I've just tried it. Well see will it work. One tip for everyone who will try to do it-take out at least your HDD, temp over 60-70* may destroy it.

    I just tried this and it actually worked out perfect, don't know how long it will last but it did turn on. Instead of putting a fan on it I just left it in the fridge for 30 minutes and plugged it up its work n fine for know

    Yeah, don't doubt this. It actually works.
    If you want to recover your lost data, I'd recommend doing this for about 15 mins, then is has to cool completely. What it's doing is fixing the soldering problems inside. This fix is temporary tho, because mine went back out after about 20 mins. Enough time to get ur data tho.
    And no, I didn't watch the video, I'm just posting this :P lawl

    You might want to throw in that it would be a great idea for you to remove hdd + blueray drives before the whole process to avoid any further unwanted damage, and just replace after its cooled

    Well like I said it worked for me. Only lasted a week. But that was plenty of time to do a backup, so I would advise anyone doing it make sure you back it up ASAP after you get it working again.
