Because Billy Gibbons played this song with an alternate tuning; tuning the A string down to a G. Then one can play the third fret B-flat to open G pull off that is the back-bone of the entire song.
Marty, Billy Gibbon's recorded this in open G. He may pull it off live in standard tuning, but go back and listen to the record. Then try it yourself in open G. I think you will get it.
how can i make requests for marty? I would love for him to do a complete lesson on weekend wars by mgmt like the picking and the whole song if possible thanks guys
Anyone saying it doesn't sound like ZZ top hasn't listened the original song "Jesus just left chicago". AC/DC straight up ripped them off, it's exactly alike, and Tres Hombres was 1973 and Dirty Deeds wasn't until 1975.
Turn the A string to G and see what happens. That's a trick. That what you do is far too complicated. Rock'n Roll is easy. :-) You can make it more easily and it sounds the same. Try it out.
It’s July 2023. So this is a little on the older side. I am Stunnned by how many videos you have cranked out to date. Libraries. Truly amazing drive for teaching this thing we call the guitar. Kudos sir
people asking for other types of lessons when he's teaching zz top... now don't get me wrong i love many bands but ZZ top are the shit... Learn them Then move onto other acts if at all possible... if not then you shouldn't be learning an instrument
For playing the C thing: just move the G up to C and play the same thing (requires some stretch of the fingers). In the move to C: Play the low C + the chords without moving your hand: you can put your pinky on the 8th fret C (low E string), while barring the 3-4-5 strings on the fifth frethwith your index, then play : C (pinky) then middle strings of the C chord, then the Em7; sounds great (better!). + you are then playing the same thing as while playing G.
3 years ago I was learning how to play Smells like teen spirit and other punk rock songs... 3 years later, still watching Marty, jamming to some blues...
Surprised he doesn't giveaway cool guitar stuff like pickups once a week.I could use some pickups so could alot of people. He would also get tons of subscribers just for that.
Marty, it would be great if you had an option to order your DVD set without actually shipping the DVD's themselves, so that the content could be downloaded or just watched online. Your lessons are awesome, but I see no need in ordering a DVD if I'm not even able to play it with my laptop =)
How anyone could thumbs down this, is beyond me .. Great lesson, thank you!!

I dont understand why more yutubers don't exaggerate there lifted fingers and strumming patterns. Just dumbs it down In a good way when your learning.
I wish I could cut off the fatty part of my ring finger because I can't stop it from muting the A string. I'll keep at it though.
Thanks Marty ive learned it and thats one of my favorite songes ever
people asking for other types of lessons when he's teaching zz top... now don't get me wrong i love many bands but ZZ top are the shit... Learn them Then move onto other acts if at all possible... if not then you shouldn't be learning an instrument

Jesus just left Chicago is also 3 years older than Ride On.. Sounds like classic, old ZZ to me..
I think Marty has it covered and I certainly wouldn't want to take advice from someone calling themselves "Nugent".
