I actually slowed down the video and, even easier in my opinion, doing it like Marty: downstroke on the A, then downstroke on the E and then alternate up and down so that you'll always downstroking that E. Waaaaay easier!
@@TristanBaldi Just been messing with this, down for the A hammer on, down e, then up on the D string alternate from there. Seems to work well as you found. I just play what’s easiest.
Marty always pulls out all the little important parts that are difficult to hear but they're there. Best teacher on the Tube...this is the song that made me start playing at 12 years old right here. My all time fav song. Thank you Marty.
This songs been stuck in my head all day - didn't even realize you had already posted a lesson of this on your new channel! You are my favorite guitar teacher!
Just started guitar 2 weeks ago. Felt confident with songs like TNT and Seven Nation Army but this song put me in my place. Very difficult to play the open E between the notes quick enough.
There are quite a few versions of this out there. By FAR this is the best and most complete. Does not have the slide but does have a good substitute and frankly the ones that do cover slice are just fills and not the solo. Marty just really does this justice.
ZZ Top is the most under or non covered music for guitar lessons on youtube, in relation to their body of work. Thank you Marty for including this very excellent song with its so cool riffs and rhythms. Keep em coming !
That was a tight lesson there, Marty. Excellent job. I only have one guitar at the moment, and I hate having to re-tune strings all the time, so I never learned how to play this song. Anything in another tuning but E and I won't bother with it. Now it is within my realm. Thanks, buddy.
WOW 😳 what a difference it was 5 years ago w online channels..it's cool to look back to where they began and see how far they've come when successful.. problem is that it's compounding and the more successful they seem to become the more they need to keep being successful.. everything changes so fast without much control over things... learning to navigate these changes and being multi faceted musician certainly gives u an advantage
Marty! brotha! Been learning guitar for about 2 months now and I gotta say you are a good teacher of the strings! learned pink floyds "wish you were here" and now I'm going to chip away at this jam!
I been playing for 30 plus years… I love your channel.. you are my go to when I need to learn something for a gig .. very spot on… sometimes even for a refresher of a certain song I haven’t played in a while… ❤
ZZ Top ROCKS!!!! Always 😋 their Classic repertoire modulates for the solo, a lot? Seems pretty simple, but there are always twists and turns to play it legit! Great Lesson.
Always trying to learn the songs I like/love. Your hard work, talent, and ability to break down the song to help us grow and strive to be a better player. I will follow your work and teachings for as long as you keep them on the Internet. Thanks for putting me in the ballpark so i can try to work it out my way.
Marty, you are one of my on line go to's when I need to learn a song. I tried to figure out the rhythm under the solo for years to no avail. A guy in a guitar store showed me to play this song, Under Pressure, Blue Jean Blues, Tush and a few more in open E minor EBEGBE, said that BG played them this way. It made these songs that never sounded quite right. sound just right. I would love your comment or any ones about this. I promise I'm not trying to be a AHole, just curious what anyone else might think of this.
Marty. Been watching your videos for a while. Always break things down that’s easy to understand. I’ve signed up to your free online lessons, but going to be adding different packages to my online library. Thanks !
Hey Marty, I appreciate what you do. Your videos are of the most frequent I find while struggling with certain songs. I like your delivery and style. please keep it up!
Your an excellent teacher , one of the best online , and thank you for calling the strings by their names don't like that first , second ,third string etc. makes things confusing in my opinion , keep up the good work.
Hey man, thanks for the lesson. I've tried to play this watching other video lessons, but they just fall short, (or maybe I do), but yours made it work for me. Thanks. Keep on!
Just got ZZ Topped ! Wow Marty you explain these tunes so well. You should get paid. This channel is a dream come true, you keep amazing me, and I am not easily amazed.
I'm so dumb at guitar... But I love trying! Your videos really do help, Marty! It mostly helps me want a burst Les Paul... Maybe if I can learn a whole song first 😂.
Hey Marty! Great job on Just Got Paid. I can do it. I just need to get it perfected & committed to memory. I saw Don Barnes from 38 Special at a show doing this tune. It's a good one like Paranoid. It pops right in! Thanks! John :)
Dude! It's so easy when you can FEEL it! 40 years of playing thought me! If you can feel it you can play it! Please excuse my bad written language! I am a German Moth........! 👍
Hey Marty! Welcome back! I don't know how I've missed the new videos, but certainly glad now that I have found them... I know everyone says it, but you're my favorite teacher.
Thanks Marty your videos have helped me quickly learn some of the cool riffs that have allowed me to really enjoy learning how to play my new Les Paul. I have been a drummer for over 30yrs but now I can’t seem to quit watching all of your videos and grabbing my guitar. Happy Nee Year and keep up the great tutorials.
Nice lesson Marty, I like how you always secretly give us the middle finger!! Love the LP. Not sure if it’s the lighting but the fretboard looks like it needs some oil!!!
excellent work, I suggest hitting 4/2 E instead of 5/7 E as this is more natural flow and a common 6/3 4/2 riff used in many songs also easier flow and pick economy, same note but just snaps better off that 6/3 G
Master of Sparks........Hot Blue and Righteous....Blue Jean Blues........Tres Hombres is a classic 70s album....wore it out....seen ZZ top at Albion college back in 76....before they had beards.
@MartyMusic ZZ Top rules! I'm still waiting for a real lesson of "I'd Love To Change The World" by 10 Years After. No one has done a good job with the solo of that song! Many Thanks!
Hey mate, well done! I love this riff! It might be my favourite of all time. I was missing the low G, now i can play it with the proper feel and groove yeah!!
Pretty simple lick but damn, it's getting the best of me with the open E, anybody else having a coordination fart on this? Thanks for the lessons Marty been watching you from the beginning man!
Nate Weeks I just started trying this last night and it's so hard for me. the first two E 's are fine but getting the last 2 in there and still keeping the speed is quite difficult
I think that chord at the beginning of the song where he stops is actually a version of a B7 chord which is the turnaround chord for a E blues. That’s what my ear hears.
Hey, Marty, It's Michael, again the oldy But goody this is a great lesson this should keep me busy you really make me want to play You explain it so well and take the time to teach your very valuable to us
To me this is one of the best rock riffs ever. Very smooth but heavy, and works just about the same at any tempo
I listen to everything from blues to death metal and I agree. One of the badest riffs ever.
Deffo good ears lads this is a 10/10 riff 💯 @PaulBradley-qi9ss
For anyone who is struggling with this here's a tip... start the riff on the up strum it makes the ryrhym easier to grab
I actually slowed down the video and, even easier in my opinion, doing it like Marty: downstroke on the A, then downstroke on the E and then alternate up and down so that you'll always downstroking that E. Waaaaay easier!
Do all the muted low Es as upstrokes, and everything else down. Best way to master this
@@TristanBaldi Just been messing with this, down for the A hammer on, down e, then up on the D string alternate from there. Seems to work well as you found. I just play what’s easiest.
Thanks! Nice 🤙🤙
My problem is going down and back from the 5th to the 3rd fret fast enough

You sure make it look easy Marty! Very good - I am taking some of your advice to heart: Play it slowly at first.
Can't believe I only found this lesson now.

Gibbons jumps from open E on 6th to hammer G and then to the 4th string E 2nd fret.
It's a typical country lick at the end of the phrase.
