- Every year, thousands of tourists descend on Point Pleasant in September for the Mothman Festival, hoping to catch a glimpse of the big guy and his glowing red eyes. In 2023, I was among them. But there’s much more to this story than just looking for creepy cryptids.

The Mothman legend began in the 1960s with a series of sightings and encounters reported by residents of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and the surrounding area. Despite a lack of credible sightings since the ‘60s, Mothman continues to capture the imagination of people in West Virginia and beyond. I wanted to figure out why.

In 1967, the Silver Bridge (which connected Point Pleasant to Gallipolis, Ohio) collapsed during rush hour. Forty six people were killed, and Mothman was never seen in Point Pleasant again. Who, or what, was Mothman? Harbinger of doom? A misunderstood warning? An elaborate prank? Let's find out.
