In Belgium, cyclists have way when they join the road when the cycling path they're on merges onto the highway. It's not an explicit rule, but it's because you have to give way to the right on junctions. So legally, they would be in the wrong.
And I myself do quite agree with this ruling. Cars should preferably give way to joining cycle paths. But I'm not saying you shouldn't watch out for cars as a cyclist in that instance either.
Right, I've said my thing. You all have a great day!!!

I hit a long tailback on the motorway pretty much every morning and have done for years. My strategy if you can call it that is to relax, hang back from the car in front perhaps 20 or 30 feet and travel at the average slow speed of the traffic in second gear just to ease stress and strain on my brake lights, clutch and overall sanity. I like to sip on my nice cup of tea while I am at it. This overall behaviour seems to absolutely infuriate some drivers (quite often lorry drivers) who will tailgate me trying to push me closer to the traffic in front even though they are not getting anywhere any more quickly. Some drivers also don't like the idea of me "letting the occasional driver pull in in front of me" either. They don't seem to understand that the 3rd driver is either going to pull in where he/she just has or is otherwise going to drive on and pull in somewhere ahead anyway thus making very little difference to the overall equation of time and stress. Also, it's quite strange how fast tailbacks actually travel if you slow down and let the traffic evaporate in front. People need to learn to relax in the morning not get unnecessarily wound up.

Regarding the Silvio clip, I'm not sure how else I would have approached the roundabout differently as a cyclist except being a bit slower and more cautious. In general, I find roundabouts are especially tricky for cyclists due to cyclists having a thin profile making them hard to see as you mentioned due to A-pillar blindspots. I think it would be a great topic to cover in a video to learn how to safely approach and navigate a roundabout as a cyclist.

    • @kevelliott
      @kevelliott 4 месяца назад +10

Tom Scott did an excellent video about a cyclist killed at a New Forest junction layout which induced 'A' pillar blindness in an oncoming driver. The oblique angle of the junction meant the cyclist and the car approached the same point without the driver ever being able to see him. A tragic.accident, resulting in a re-configuring of the junction.

I think criticism of the 1st rider is correct, he just pulled out to do a poor overtake giving the overtaking driver no chance to adjust.
Additionally the criticism of the 2nd Rider and his behavior "after" the car pulled out on him was wrong... However, I don't think the rider was in the wrong to be on the right of the roundabout as it said straight ahead both lanes, additionally you cannot assume he didn't provide a hand signal.. the pulling out of that car was dreadful and dangerous. I don't think you can blame the cyclist for that.
There is no excuse for pulling out there if there is swiftly approaching oncoming traffic regardless of the lane. The cyclist could have been in the left hand lane but the fault and initial poor driving was from the Mercedes driver....

On the second clip, the Mercedes could be slowing as that's where the fixed speed camera zone is and the satnav may have chimed. It's only a 20 zone, within a cyclist's speed window, and it's just by the camera that Silvio overtakes (into oncoming traffic...). Once past the camera (and the zebra crossing's zigzags) the Mercedes increases speed and overtakes. Then they both catch up with the van maintaining 20.

But the white car is on the middle of the (small) roundabout. There are white markings there. Is that allowed? To me it seems the white car is cutting of the road, then realising the bus is a bit in the way. How would the situation be if the car stayed on the correct lane / part of the road? This would have taken more time, space. Also he wouldn’t have been so close to the cyclist due to better cornering. Maybe then also the cyclist would have ended up behind the car ?

chap on a bike. How can someone complain about a car being 'a bit close', when he is the one closing down the space. Sylvio, (on S. Croxted road). I didn't think did much wrong at the roundabout. But his antics afterwards were, well, stupid really. I'm guessing the car put the brakes on because his sat nav (or car), told him there was a speed camera further down, so braked to get down to 20 MPH. Which would mean Sylvio was speeding, the car then sped up again after the speed camera, (like many car drivers do). I don't think the can specifically wanted to get in front, they probably just thought 20 was too slow, so put the foot down after the camera. Sylvio just has a bad attitude.

Was the Merc braking due to 20 mph area? The cammer also puts themselves in a number of dangerous positions. What sometimes appears to be a must get in front overtake, could in fact be good planning for further down the road, that is not instantly obvious at the overtake and it can also turn out not be be an overtake, that does not lead to someone making ground and it appears as a must get in front overtake.

Typical bike rider arrogance, each and every one wants it all their own way.
Dangerously passes another bike, because he has to get in front. No thought about the safety of the other bike, or any willingness to slow a little and tuck in behind the bike.
Same in the congested traffic, squeezes between a bus & car. What would have happened if the car started to move as he tried to squeeze through?
Bike happily rides right to the front of the queue then holds everyone up. No consideration for the road users in front. He could have slowed down when approaching the lights, so as they changed, cars in front could safely move away.

I ride 2 days a week in C London. One of the things other cyclists do that annoys (and endangers) me no end, is choosing to overtake other cyclists at the WORST POSSIBLE TIME. They so often do it at traffic lights where everybody is already bunched up in the cycle lane (and people turning both left and right at the junction) and yet STILL try to squeeze through where you could hardly get a cigarette paper between one lane and the other let alone a bike. They also LOVE to try and muscle into the people on the left of them (I always stay to the left, hugging the curb keeping out of the way) to avoid the people coming towards them. I had to shout at a woman on Tues for almost knocking me off as she tried to squeeze through between me and the people coming the opposite direction (who were also overtaking). They love to shout at motorists about 1.5 meters but often give other cyclists less than 1.5mm when passing. Today I was driving along a stretch of road with a bike lane on the left. Completely empty as I'm driving along, but there's a Lycra lout steaming down the outside of me. He passes the car in front of me as traffic slows and sweeps across the front towards the bike lane and nearly hits a mountain biker who is just trundling along minding his own business and riding responsibly. These are the kind of people who give ALL road users a bad name.

Nearly dooring that other cyclist by stopping in the middle of the road and flinging the door open wasn't great either. Filming for hits and likes……… usually anonymous cyclist.
In a fair number of these incidents, both or either are to blame. The difference being, the driver has a proven ability to control a vehicle, the vehicle has passed a roadworthiness test (MOT), VED has been paid and a statutory minimum level of insurance is in place. The vehicle can be traced back to a keeper and that keeper can be fined for not clarifying who was driving.
The argument put forward is that some or all of these rules and requirements are routinely ignored. If so, ANPR means the chase is on and the miscreant is pursued.
The cyclist is anonymous. No legal requirement for anything.
Level playing field, it is not.

He got out of the saddle, putting a bit of a shift to catch the car, and then cycled on the wrong side of the road to make a point. What a gent. Meaning even the cyclist coming from the opposite direction took a minor change.
And the first one. What a condescending gent. If he comes and and said he was a gent, I'd have nothing more than absolute admiration.
This... 99.9% of cyclists are mint. When I cycle, I don't want a close pass. But neither do I really need 1.5m. I mean, if I did. I probably shouldn't be cycling..

      I think you do.
At say 18mph - not fast - you are running at 8m/s and a hazard can appear very quickly, say a pothole.
You need space to manoeuvre around that safely.

On 1.5m, it's simply yes - we do.
My experience is that a significant % of drivers are effectively asleep, and don't look beyond the end of their bonnet. When cycling, I always have a Pass Pixi (reflective speed camera type sign) on the back of my cycle, so I'm running Schrodinger's video cameras, and it makes a big difference.
If overtaking motor vehicles need to dart anywhere to give as much space to a cycle or motorbike as they would a car, it is not a safe overtake and they should wait. That's classic "Must Get In Front".
I can see no overtakes in the first clip; there is the other cyclist on a separated cycle track, and a motorist in the carriageway alongside. It would be better with a median, of course. If it is an overtake then the motorist is overtaking through a traffic calming feature, which is frowned on by the HWC.
The painted cycle lane is a mess; they increase collisions and casualties (we have the evidence) partly because they encourage driving to the near side of the lane. It would most probably be safer without it. I'd argue that that street should perhaps be one way, and the network adjusted.
Chaponabike obviously tightens it up too much.
BTW, I like your standing jump; I'm part owner of a Crossfit gym.

@@mattwardman If you are travelling so fast that you cannot anticipate a fixed hazard, you aren't paying proper attention according to the law. That works for all road users. No-one should be swerving suddenly. Cyclists don't pass wide either, yet a car could swerve.

    • @mattwardman
      @mattwardman 4 месяца назад

@@fakecrusader I think you're missing it - in the scenario under discussion the cyclist has seen the fixed hazard and we have the 1.5m clearance to drive around it.
Motor vehicles swerve suddenly if the driver has not noticed something until the last minute, and they habitually go far faster than cycles.
Unfiortunately it is impossible to tell whether a random driver in a random vehicle will not swerve suddenly as they "should", or will even see something straight in front of their nose.
They drive into lamp posts, they drive into the front room of people's houses, they drive too fast into a setting sun when they should be at walking pace, they drive into pedestrian refuges, they drive straight through lights on red because they "do not see".
They drive into things directly in front of them - from pedestrians and cyclists right up to police vehicles in full livery with blues and twos running.
Then they lie to the police about what happened. Then they lie to the Court. Then they lie to themselves.
Vulnerable road users can't trust that, which is why we have the 1.5m rule. Fortunately people who violate it are more likely than ever to get 6 reward points to display proudly on their license, which is a very good thing.
Sorry for taking such a blunt position, but that's where I stand.

You certainly don't give way to both lanes when entering a roundabout in New Zealand.
There should have been no intersection of traffic in this encounter but the cyclist did an unsignalled lane change or at least a change into another roadway (different lane different roadway) where another vehicle is present.
It is not often you will see me criticising a cyclist over a car.
The one reason to give any praise to the cyclust is that they made themselves visible but they should have done that from the right of the left lane, not the left of the right lane.

    • @nuntius1933
      @nuntius1933 4 месяца назад +1

Fully agree. I suspect it may even be yet another one of those local driving myths that the roundabout has to be entirely free before entering, given that multi-lane roundabouts are beyond the scope of the HC. It should be sufficient to ensure that the lane you wish to enter is free. Common sense also dictates that you try to avoid mid roundabout lane changes and if unavoidable owing to poor road design, you are always going to be the give-way vehicle. Little wonder that by far the majority of roundabout collisions in the UK occur at exit.
It has to be said that the British don't do roundabouts well.

Wrong; people shouldn't ever get out of their car.
I'm a motorbike rider and a bicycle rider; anyone, car driver or otherwise, that comes marching up to me with a stern expression and breaches a two metre exclusion zone gets a free trip to hospital.
If I had a car, I wouldn't get out of it to get in someone's face. I don't ever get of my bike to confront someone, no matter what has occurred.

Squeezes between the car and the other bike then complains about the space he put himself into... just be aware of what is around you! Beep deserved.

What the entitled idiots in the first 2 clips fail to realise is that THEIR behaviour affects how motorists view cyclists, and that the next cyclist the driver meets probably suffers.
Roads are shared, and if things are going to get better then this kind of rubbish has to be stopped. All it does is dilute the message of genuine bad driving by highlighting bad cycling and aggressive stupidity.

Silvio has to learn to use hand signalling instead to put whole blame on others. He was in the wrong lane and confused the driver. If he signalled that he is changing the lanes and the driver ignored it then it's cyclist's behaviour acceptable. Both are the blame and the kids stuff after the incident was mindless
