I saw that people are dressing up to take out their trash nowadays, I can't help but think how awesome it would be to see historic costumers turning up at the supermarket in full period get-ups. Nothing like a hoop skirt to enforce social distancing.
I have dressed like that in public, it is who I am, most give odd stares, but some find it interesting. This last Fall, I went to a tea luncheon for Downton Abby and dressed with a bunch of Ladies in period clothing and went to see the movie.
I wear 1890s clothing every day, even to the supermarket.
I love the idea that some guys thought women were actually shaped like this and were super surprised on their wedding night
One of the romance novel series I read has the men always thinking 'oh yay that's real girl under there and not padding! this is EVEN BETTER!' quite regularly when our heroines trip or need helping into carriages, y'know. for plot reasons. :P (Loretta Chase is the author if you like your romance with some excellent research and costuming.)
I love Loretta Chase!
This concept never fails to make me laugh! Imagine actually BEING in this situation. Not even getting married, just like some dude friend you have being like “wHAT!? YOU ARENT ACTUALLY SHAPED THIS WAY?” And you the rest of your lady friends have a good laugh over it because you all just KNOW
That's the old joke. On their wedding night, the bride takes off and puts away her hip pads, bust enhancer, corset and hair extensions. Her new husband looks confused and says "I don't know if I should jump into the bed ---- or the dresser draw"
@@tegansutherland7299 Sounds great! Can you recommend a few good ones to start with?
Its not teasing my hair needs, its shouting at😃
Hahahaha! Whatever makes it puffy is perfectly acceptable :)
Those are well constructed pieces. Edwardian women had the concept of layering down. The hat is lovely too 😁 The ladies walking at the end with you were so lovely too.
I love your train! Someday I'll have a skirt like that. As a child I would wrap myself up in sheets and pretend that I had a train behind me.
I always did the same thing haha!
Make your own and show us! I've been aggressively making clothes since this whole quarantine thing started, it feels fantastic to wear your own handiwork, even if you can only go to the grocery store right now.
I always felt positively imperial when I walked down stairs in my houpeland (medieval gown with a full circle body, tho I did it in an ovoid to get the longer train).
I've never seen anyone style Edwardian hair like you have here and I'm so shocked that I never thought to do it like this hahaahaha
So easy!
oh be careful with the bowing of the bones in that back! that can damage the corset. you want to make sure the gap is parallel even if u have to leave it a bit looser top and bottom.
You strike the perfect balance in showing someone how you put a look together and also encouraging them to experiment and figure something out on their own. It’s like getting dressed with a friend!
Thank you, friend :)
Watching all the layers and pieces of this outfit come together was so satisfying. Y’all looked amazing in the end, it makes me want to try this for myself!
Yay! It's actually one of the easier periods to start with because fitting isn't as critical for some of these more casual styles like this!
Dames a la Mode thank you for the information. it’s always hard to know where to start but now I got the time to try it 😂
Always love the fur baby cameos. 😻 Glad to see everyone has gotten some camera time over the last two posts. 💜 I loved this video. You gave me major Diana Barrett vibes, while brushing your hair.
I was thinking the same thing! Totally Diana Barry vibes! :)
She was my absolute goals as a little girl (even in my imagination I couldn't have red hair!)
How lovely! 💕 Your entire outfit is beautiful, especially the vintage lace you found for your shirt collar and cuffs... but I just love your skirt! The color, and it's swooshy in the most flattering way. I think you did a very nice job creating this outfit. 💝🌷💖
Thank you! Isn't it amazing how beautiful high-quality wool can be? It has such lovely flow!
@@DamesalaMode It certainly amazed me! Before when I thought "wool" I thought "scratchy blanket, lol.
"If you have fine hair, you may have to tease more agressively"
Tell me about it.
Wow 😯 so many layers 😱 ( I wonder what would have happen Back then if the woman woke up and found out they only had 2 minutes to dress themself 🤯🙄 ) . But is is very very pretty ! Love the shoes , hey what can I say I am a shoe kind of girl ! I love that you showed all the layers . You sometimes forget how Complicated dressing up was back then . Social distance greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 ( Anne) Miekje ( I can see we have the same hair problem that is the full reason I cut it short shoulder length , it got so heavy that my neck started to hurt )
I love your hat!! I love your whole outfit! I used to dress up in Victorian clothes that I sewed for myself, when I was in my late twenties, and early thirties. Now that I am 60 years old, I long for those good old days! Thanks for sharing your video! Remember to stay 6 feet away from other people, Wash your hands, and stay at home! We are all in this together, and we will survive COVID-19! God bless! ~Janet in Canada
I really love the pintucks on the skirt front and the sleeves on your blouse. The hat is gorgeous!
Now all you need is a pretty brooch and an umbrella to finish it off and a pretty shawl
Best walking club ever! 😊 🌷
What’s not to love! The dress, the hair, the hat!!
Omg. U had me at sacrificial layer
Ok that is a brilliant thing with your petticoat because I've noticed that all of my hems are going bonkers from wear. A petticoat that's long enough to take the wear! Genius. Love the video, love seeing the layers come together. It's such a simple and beautiful look and so so so effective.
Thank you!
The victorians used a 'balayuse' that buttoned onto their petticoats to make laundering and replacement even easier
We need a "making of" that Edwardian skirt. It's soo beautiful and you did such a nice and neat job. And then you turn around and that train is like BAM! I love it.
Thanks! I made this long before I had a youtube channel so I didn't think about it, but I have another Edwardian skirt on my to-make list so I will definitely film that one :)
@@DamesalaMode Yay!! I can't wait to see it, always looking for more Edwardian sewing inspiration since I am not that good 😂
Thanks. I think you are your friends look amazing. I want an Edwardian skirt like yours but am starting to realise that it’s not just the skirt you need to make but also the petticoats and corset...This could take some time...
I really like the shirt, its not too lacey, not a fan of super puffy sleeves, those ones are perfect. Buttoning up the front is a must for me due to range of motion issues. The collar works because its not tight against the throat due to asthma.
My hair was this thick one year ago...also. March of 2021 I have now got a gallon zip lock bag full...gonna stuff something with it...maybe the knitted toys I make...seems fitting. LOVED your whole outfit!
Lovely, thank you!
Thanks for making this! It was really helpful for giving me an idea what garments I’ll need for my own ensemble. I do have one suggestion though. You should be careful to lace your corset evenly, even if that means making it a bit more loose than it can close in parts. While corsets of the time were usually laced all the way shut, it’s better for the corset to have a bit of a gap between the laces than to be in that () shape. Thank you again!
You are so gorgeous, the perfect Edwardian lady! Thank you for showing the easy way to get a puff in the hair without a rat or ten million pins! So glad I found your channel and a like minded historical lady and cant wait to see more videos!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Here I am, walking around in just one petticoat and with no bum-enhancer! The shame! Unfortunately, I lost my hair due to illness. It’s back now, but has only reached an overgrown, spiky mess! I can’t figure out what to do for my Edwardian garb, aka my whole wardrobe, save for maybe buy a wig.😢
So many layers!
Everyone should dress like this! 💚
Well a little elaborate for everyday use, but I certainly enjoy doing it on occasion!
Were you strolling on the walking/bike path? I live in RI and the path is literally 50 feet from my door. You'd never see any lovely Edwardian "Dames" here though, sadly.
Gaaaahhh! I love this so much! You have inspired me to start working on my Edwardian ensemble! Thank you!
I'm so glad!
💓I love the point detail on your blouse cuffs and the outer skirt trim and tucks are gorgeous. Nice to see someone else does the shake, toss and catch wjth their clothes ---I did a double take when I saw that part. 😁
Thanks! The best way to get dressed haha!
Wow 😲 this was absolutely amazing. Your outfit looks stunning, the amount of time and talent you have, I’m so jealous. Love your channel so much, thank you 😊💖💖💖
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Such a beautiful period of dress. You do it justice.
Thank you!
I really like this video! I like seeing all the layers, in their proper order, to make the outfit. Guess what? I've been doing Edwardian hair all along! But I switch it up with a hair stick instead of pins at times. And I definitely need a hat like that... furry assistants I already have.
If only we could teach our furry assistants to make hats!
That hat is everything!!!!
It really makes the look!
Love this! So many crucial details! and cats :)
Lovely
You make the hair look so easy! I'm going to have to try that approach!
It's quite simple, especially once you have done it a few times and get the hang of it!
Looking very elegant! Thank you for sharing
You are so welcome!
Very beautiful!
I loved seeing all the petticoats! With the drawstring closure, does the drawstring go all the way around the front of the petticoat too? It seemed to be a flat front waistband. The belt really does complete the whole ensemble! Love it!
It's totally flat in the front so there isn't unnecessary bulk. The drawstring just starts at about the side back.
@@DamesalaMode Ahh thank you! I didn't even stop to think that drawstrings can start at the side back!
Do you make/sell blouses? I'm in love with the one you're wearing in this.
No, I only sew for myself
Loved this! Have you done a how to make that hat video? Loved the music, makeup, watching the dress layers and hair! So much in one video. Did you make all the outfits at the end? It looks so fun and peaceful with all the gals. P.s. I would have been happy to watch 2-3 ads to help you monetise your work per half hour video.
I didn't do a video on the hat - it is so simple! Just a band of fabric and some faux flowers and ribbons! Each of the other girls made their outfits. They are all so skilled!
Such a lovely ensemble! I have this Wearing History Edwardian blouse pattern printed out, and you've inspired me to finally cut into some fabric and get started. I love the blouse modifications you've made...buttons in the front are very practical, indeed. Is your collar the high neck with points version just turned down rather than buttoned up, or did you create a new collar altogether?
It is a high necked version that I just left open and turned down. It's similar to the WH pattern, but it doesn't have a pointed collar - it's just flat
Helpful. Thank you.
great video! Thank you!
That is amazing. You are so inspiring! I have a skirt and top from the ww1 era from Folkwear. Do you think that brand is good?
I haven't had any personal experience with that brand, but I think they are generally well regarded in the sewing community. Good luck with your project!
Your outfit is lovely and I especially love the skirt. At the end, everyone looked wonderful in their outfits. I do have a question - What do you do to protect the underside of the skirt's train and keep it from getting dirty? Thank you for sharing this.
The last petticoat I put on is longer and trained, so it is usually what is touching the ground and gets most of the dirt. But...hems just get dirty! It's the reality of this style.
@@DamesalaMode Ah, I see. I am a early Middle Ages re-enactor so I wear the basic under dress instead of petticoats, but I still love learning the fashions of other periods, as well as some very good sewing tips. I appreciate all of the hard work you ladies put into your outfits and your channels. You all look simply wonderful in your gowns. Thank you for your response and keep safe.
Wunderschönen 🌸🌸🌸👌
I was wondering what pattern did you use for your chemise? It's simple but looks perfect for multiple outfits (day and evening/ball).
It's actually a modern sleeveless cotton dress! One of my costuming cheats!
@@DamesalaMode Oh! That's brilliant! Less sewing required. 😉
bonjour, j'aime vraiment beaucoup
i wan to dress like this. How do I do it?
Where are your pockets??😀😀
No pockets in this outfit!
Lol looks hard
Cat!!!
Is this a circle skirt
Oh no, it's got shaped pieces and has much more volume in the back than the front.
