I am a guy but I just love edwardian dresses and skirts. I've made myself a nice walking skirt, and I find that it blends better into my cross-gender wardrobe when I take liberties with the fabric itself. My favourite combo is my walking skirt and a tank top under a highwaisted denim vest I have with tons of buttons. it makes me looks very tall XD
My sister and I were in target and a black late Victorian/early Edwardian top was well stocked throughout the store. We called it the war widow The war widow now lives in my closet.
this morning i had a stupid argument with my mom about my vintage style and how she thinks i look like a drag queen and should look more "natural". i'm a 21 year old woman with my own apartment! as if i can't make my own choices... i really needed to hear that first part of the video, so thank you rachel 🙏 here's to not giving a fluff!!!
Rachel, I honestly appreciate how laid back you are with historical-vitage dress. You're not gate keeping, you're just here for the aesthetic, love of history, and fun of ol' dress.
The lace top + shorts combo looked so adventurous! Like an early 1900s explorer trekking the jungle in style! (Also the Neverending Story song in the outtakes was 👌🏻)
I have slowly been adding more and more renaissance into my modern fashion, and I SO love that you are doing the same with edwardian ❤❤❤ More historical influence for all!
Her recent video about making a Masque of the Red Death dress is very imaginative. I'm sub'ed to both Rachel and BB for the same reason: they're extraordinarily classy.
I have, the past year, incorporated lace tops into everything (I have one I pair with a cute pair of denim overall shorts) and even though people sometimes stare, I feel like a LADY. I was once stopped by an older woman who was just so fascinated and kept telling saying "why are you so pretty".
I'm learning to not give a fluff about what people think of me. I finally went to the thrift store and found some 40s pieces that I can't wait to wear. I'm so excited to try Edwardian now too!
When you mentioned Bernadette I squealed. I don't know when I became that person but apparently, I did. A RUclips Creator that enjoy mentioned another RUclips creator that I enjoy so obviously that's worth a squeal. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing more Edwardian inspired looks from you as Edwardian and Victorian are my jam. I do love the 40s too but like you, I love lot's of different vintage/historical styles. With me everything has an edge of the 16th-century woodsy witch as well.
Rebecca Stockwell I grinned when she mentioned her. I think RUclips recommended me just because of following her and other historical dressmaking youtubers.
The fact that they are friends makes me so happy! 🥰 I want them to adopt me!! I don’t know how I became this person either.🤦🏻♀️ Until recently, I was just the nerdy girl who watched history docs on here. Then RUclips recommended Bernadette’s channel, and now I’m a fan of a few amazing youtubers. 😅
I feel like you would really love Gunne Sax stuff from the late 70's and early 80's. The designer Jessica Mcclintock was heavily influenced by the Edwardian time period. A lot of it is expensive and highly collectible now, but you can still find blouses and skirts for not too much from time to time online.
I've been trying to find a sewing pattern for an Edwardian blouse. I think it would look great with skinny jeans to add a bit of floof and drama. I've made an Edwardian skirt (ten panels that go into a slight point at the top of the back) and wear it with a tshirt. I wore it to visit Highclere Castle and felt like a Disney princess as I swept down the stairs. No one else noticed but it felt so damn good!
If you haven’t already made one yet (or for anyone else interested), my favourites Edwardian and Late Victorian blouse patterns come from Black Snail patterns on Etsy. They have a few to choose from. Additionally, there’s also Truly Victorian and Folkwear Patterns, and they have some lovely options too.
Through you I’ve learned how to reference different eras and styles and no longer just refer to every style as “vintage”. I feel smarter because of you so thanks!!!
I am a trans guy who loves your channel. Since I adore historical fashion, I can always take some elements of the women's styles you introduce and transform them into men's styles for myself (it also helps that you gravitate towards shirts, trousers and sometimes waistcoats). However, I would be so happy if you could one day make a video about men's fashion as this is so rarely talked about and I can't be the only guy who enjoys vintage styles. (No worries, if that's not something you'd ever do. You're amazing)
"I don't give a fluff" is the perfect life motto! I've actually come to love social interactions about what I'm wearing over the years; I've been lucky that most of them are innocent and friendly, and it's a really fun conversation starter! And being told I remind someone of their grandma when she was young is THE BEST. I want to incorporate some more Edwardian styles into my wardrobe, and these are great tips. Man I need to get back to curling my hair! It's such an easy way to do vintage or Edwardian or earlier hair with little effort!

I'm a mature woman that has been history bounding her whole life. It just didn't have a name back in the day. I was just that weird girl in the 80's wearing victorian Folkwear patterns that I sewed on a treadle machine. I absolutely love you and keep making great videos!
I find your approach to evoking an era so refreshing! I'm in awe of the talent and dedication some vintage fans show in perfect duplication of historical costume. But I've noticed there is sometimes a slight snobbishness about total accuracy. I'd much rather incorporate my favourite vintage details, like lace, skirt shapes, high necks and bishop sleeves into my own personal style! Your vintage philosophy is v refreshing 💃
I have stopped feeling silly about mixing up the decades/centuries. My favorite outfit is a lace and silk white Edwardian blouse from 1890 with a neon scarf, high waisted jeans, and lace up tan leather knee-high boots. People compliment it almost everywhere I go so that gave me confidence to try other pairings.
Thank you, not just for the information in the video but for your thoughts on doing your own thing and dressing in a way that makes you happy. I often dress in very Victorian/Edwardian style clothing when not working. Being immersed in those eras is a relaxing and cathartic form of therapy against this overly-modern and interconnected world of ours. Inasmuch, I'm nearly as used to the occasional critic (who is usually someone guilty of sartorial blasphemy themselves) as I am the people who comment positively on the look. Keep up the good work, young miss.
Loved this! I did this in the 1980's in high school, the Belle Epoque revival was big then too, as was early Frontier (carried over from the late 70's with Little House on the Prairie, The Waltons, etc). Lacey blouses, long tiered skirts, and granny or western boots, depending on the era you wanted to channel. Even in the mid 1990's the Victorian revival was amazing, with lots of velvet, buttoned frock coats, killer boots, and big hair. Thank you for posting this video, it brought back so many great fashion memories, and inspired me to incorporate Belle Epoque back into my wardrobe again! Hugs from Toronto, Canada! XOXOXO
Everytime I watch your videos it makes me want to go watch the Anne of Green Gables movies...you remind me so much of Anne in the second movie when she's grown up... love you and your videos! ❤️
"Who gives a fluff?!" *will* be my new life motto 😘 I never thought much about Edwardian fashion, thought it was too bleh...but I love your approach to it!! It's great that you're a "live and let live" type of person, and not somebody sooo uptight about historical accuracy. Because, fashion is fun!!!
I've found my stile, that's been very 40's-50's for years, to start to get inspired by edwardian in either a "feminine modern princess" style, or "femme dandy let's make Oscar Wilde proud" style. So this video was a welcome inspiration for me ^^ And the words "I don't give a fluff" should be printed on tote bags and pins.
Do you have recommendations for modern male edwardian and vintage styles? Or influencers that style that way? I love your channel, but i dont fancy lady styles on myself.
- Zack Pinsent (instagram: pinsent_tailoring) he does a great job with historical fashion! - (Instagram: the_vintagearian) he does a great vintage style! - (Instagram: doberandman) he does great vintage and some more historical outfits! - and you can search Vintage mens fashion on Instagram tags and find some more great people! I know I’m a woman but I feel like it is kind of the same for men, if you want to find great inspiration just look at old photos or modern peoples interpretations! I’m sure you could also find clothing on Etsy! It’s the vintage treasure chest! I hope this helped some! -
Yesss I was gonna suggest Pinsent and doberandman! Unfortunately it is definitely a bit harder to come by which is a shame because I LOVE historic men's fashion! So if anyone has any suggestions please leave them! ❤️
Hi Kyle, beside those ppl already suggested, check out these two guys on Instagram @vintagebursche from Germany, and @masu_mb from Japan. They both wear classic 1920 to 1940s men's wear.
No influencer recommendations but a style: My favorite favorite favorite era of clothing is the Teddy Boy fashion in the 1950s. London teenagers (mostly boys but there were some girls as well) would take Edwardian cloths (aka Edwardian "Teddy" Boys) and cuff the pants, add colorful socks, wear creepers (a brand of shoe that became popular I believe in WWII which then in the 1990s became popular once more) and then adorn the outfits with velvet bows or ties (and you can't forget the slicked back Elvis hair!). It's really cool because it looks modern because it's just a suit but when adorned with the accessories and hair it really just adds to the ensemble. (also The Beatles were Teddy Boys before they became famous in the 60s and turned to Modern "Mod" fashion)
I love your videos! I decided to do medieval inspired hair/outfit for work today and I was amazed at the support I received from my coworkers. They loved it and thought it looked really good. I love picking different influences and let that inspire an everyday look.
I love this video so much. I have gotten really into Edwardian fashion this year and have slowly been trying to collect blouses that suit. Bernadette’s videos are also so fantastic to show those traditional ways of sewing , I’m always speechless at the time she takes for hand sewing.
As always love your bloopers at the end 😂😍 Also, on the topic of wearing what you want, I was hesitant to wear 40s 50s, but only get huuuuuge compliments on m. My niece of 1.5 y.o. couldn't stop staring and forgot about her food (she never forgets about her food, food is love), which I found the biggest compliment I could ever get! So, long story short! Dress how you like, if you feel good, you look good and it'll surprise you how positive people react to that 💪🏻❤
Amen girl! I occasionally like to wear Steam Punk inspired clothes. And my friends always enjoy when I dress up but say things like "I could never pull something like that off" and I always tell them you won't know till you try and as long as you feel confident in what you're wearing other ppl don't really tend to care.
One of the best bits of fashion advice I’ve ever gotten is that anything you wear will work as long as you’re confident and love what you’re wearing other people will love it as well
Every time I see photos from the Edwardian era, i'm reminded of the photo's I've seen of Swedish teachers during the 1800s and early 1900s (the industrial revolution came a century later for us). Super great video! I really like the "Don't Give a Fluff" segment, and it's now my new motto.
I love the Eduardian throwback pictures of my ancestors! Especially my mom’s, mom’s, mom’s, mom who worked in the Italian Royal palace as a lady in waiting. To me, this is the definition of true glam!
I did a Gibson tuck for my wedding hair!! Made the 3/4 sleeve lace dress seem appropriately vintage but still modern enough to not be costumey. I'm gonna have to try the others though, that Lazy Gibson Girl hair is super fun. Edit: Omg the Never-ending Story Dance Party XD I feel both old AND validated
This video is a lifesaver, currently trying to research Edwardian women's clothing for a film I'm working on which is a period piece. Also! Thank you for the 70's does Edwardian tip, this is going to save my crew a lot of time and money on costumes! Love from a student filmmaker (UK)
This may be my favorite of your videos yet! My vintage style obsession started with Downton Abbey and has evolved to more 40’s but I’ve always wanted to try more Edwardian! I love what you said about the long skirts and how it makes you feel! I feel like I could skip through a meadow! Also I love what you said about rocking your style. I always feel over dressed at mom group because everyone else is in sweats, but I love my vintage style and I love your confidence your style!! Love your channel!
I'm always shy to dress up but like you said, you should never give up doing something just because others don't like it. Thanks for the reminder and btw loved the edwardian style tips you gave!
All of these hairstyles are super beautiful, most excellent execution! Especially the front of that braid, such lovely balance of floof and swoopy curl, very A Room With a View. It's quite nice that one can kinda just pile some curls around and get a very romantic and quite accurate look with this era. American Duchess make wonderful Edwardian shoes for any non-boot occasions, though really, boots are for all occasions as you say :)
When I was just out of high school ...mid 80s , you could find similar styles right down to the ankle lace up boots...a little more Victorian with a dash of Edwardian and it was my favorite way to dress...this brought back so many memories!
Edit: Because of repercussions from a severe concussion I just got to watch this again for the "first" time! I'm new to this channel and this was the PERFECT answer to my questions. I have so many clothes and wanted to turn them into Edwardian outfits by mixing and matching. Thank you so much!
I really love the idea of playing with style and would love to incorporate a vintage vibe😉 into wardrobe but have no idea where to start and at 46 years old I also worry that I would just look old and out of date rather then intentional 🤷♀️. I love that you do you, and I love your channel 🥰 thanks
YAS THIS MY ERA 🙌🙌🙌 I loved this video! I've started wearing my flouncy Edwardian tops with dungarees as I like that kind of industrial/historical maah-up kinda look 👌
I remember going to the Gunne Sax outlet store back in the 80s in SF to shop for all of those pretty lace tops! Had such a good time rummaging through the bins of factory "rejects" and finding gold! I found some great stuff for super cheap, like $2-$5, and if something was wrong with it, I grew up with a seamstress grandmother that taught me sewing, so I could fix just about anything. And the "dressing room" was just one big room with no individual stalls for privacy; it was literally a portion of the factory that was reserved for us bargain shoppers. So here we all were in our under clothes trying on all of these garments in front of each other, but I didn't care, I wanted those clothes 😊😄😆 You carry this look very gracefully and elegantly, it really suits you. 😊
My style is 1910s and 1930s. I'm afraid of sticking out too much and I find it hard to make it blend in. This episode is perfect. I love your channel, it's my favorite vintage channel.
I absolutely adore this look on you!! As a creepy gal, I tend to favour Victorian-meets-modern clothes in darker shades. But you're right- it can border as costumey if not done correctly. Such a great look and some wonderful advice.
Yessss!!! Thank you Rachel for discussing my favorite historical fashion era! Slowly but surely incorporating more edwardian vibes into my style, and this video was full of inspiration 💕💕
Just in time for my life! I just recently got in to edwardian style and trying to work it in to my every day life without looking like i walked off a movie set I love this!! I'm glad you dont feel pressure to stick to one decade.
I have always liked the Victorian/Edwardian look, too. While I was in College, I used to wear a blouse like the one you wore in the video, and a calf-length skirt. People asked me if I was studying Theatre, and I would say, "No, I just like this style." After the other students got used to the way I dressed, no one bothered me. Today, though, I'm more into the 40s look. Now folks say, "Hey! You look like Rosie the Riveter!" Yup, that's the last time I wear that head scarf turban-style! Kidding! I like putting my hair up in the 40s turban style when I'm grocery shopping, and my hair's a mess, and when I'm at home vacuuming. Sorta keeps my hair from getting into my eyes. LOL! You looked so cute in all of your Edwardian outfits! My hair is growing longer, since I can't get to my hairdresser because of Covid! I liked the way you curled your hair, so I copied you. (God, that sounds creepy!) Stay safe, and take care, Rachel! ~Janet in Canada
Two More Tips to consider for a Edwardian look; 1) Wear a simple cotton petticoat under whatever skirt you own. It helps to balance out the look of the skirt by preventing your legs or bum clinging to the actual skirt fabric. If you look back at old photos a key aspect is that the skirt itself creates something of a "mystery" by not adhering to the body passed the waistline. It seems like it's an object unto itself that doesn't really hint at the wearer's body shape. No matter what your skirt's hem is, this simple under layer really helps to ensure, even if your skirt is very modern, that the fabric "sits" right on your body from a historical perspective. A cotton petticoat is really just a tube of fabric that cinches in at the waist enough not to fall off; no matter what sewing methods you choose it makes for a good beginner's project if you don't want to buy one (it's a great project because no one will see it so no one will know if you're stitches are messed up). 2) Cover bare legs with socks or tights. If you are going with a skirt not to the ankle, wearing socks or tights to hide the flesh of your leg really helps. Edwardians and Victorians had a lot of hang-ups with human anatomy and creating an outfit that "acknowledges" those phobias helps give it a more historical vibe. I also notice they were scared of collar bones, thought wrists were a bit iffy and were terrified by knees. KNEES! Oh what has the world come to?! Somehow they had less problems with areas that were more "fleshy" or rounded and less boney / veiny. My theory is that science was a real curiosity at the time, but people still wanted to imagine themselves as being slightly separated from the natural world.
In 1982, theyear I graduated from high school, I made a Victorian/Edwardian blouse with all the ruffles and leg-o-lamb sleeves and 36 button holes(and buttons) and paired it with my aunt's 1955 black corduroy calf length skirt and black flats. Did my hair up with the bun and curls. Got lots of compliments and dates!
So happy to have found you. I am slowly incorporating Edwardian men's clothing into my every day wardrobe and appreciate that there are others who enjoy dressing in other than sweat pants and a hoodie :) Merci mon ami
I love the message that goes with this video! It's very freeing to wear what I want, from whatever era I fancy. I hope that others who are maybe a little shy, can break out and wear those vintage/vintage inspired clothing they have yet to wear. Love this video!
Late to the party, but between you, Ms. Banner, Ms. Donner, and everyone else in the CosTuber community, I’ve leaned in hard in “I don’t give a fluff.” Edwardian vibing... a little, sort of... but with modern fabrics. Floor length black wrappers with yoga trousers under them for warmth in Nebraska winters, over black bodysuit leotards for scoop neckline, topped with close-fitting vests that give a silhouette like a corset would, hair bound up and pinned into a beret... choice bits and bobs of my handmade jewelry, plus makeup... and a black wool cape. Every where I go, I get appreciative looks and questions, and I feel great and like my most authentic self.
You look absolutely gorgeous in this style and I love how much love and care you put into your videos. With all the little outfit options and mini hair tutorials etc, it just shows how passionate you are about the things you love and are with sharing it with everyone else!! Your videos are always my favorite way to end my day ❤️❤️❤️
I love your insights into fashion, the way you incorporate different eras into your daily life is so inspiring and fun! Thanks for being you and sharing your thoughts with all of us. I look forward to your videos so much!
Thank you so much Rachel!! I start my first job this Friday at a Victorian/Edwardian shop and this really helped me figure out what I should wear to make a good impression. Thank you!!
I'm in love with this look, you're killing it 👏🏼👏🏼💖 Also I'd love to suggest a princess bride look book! I think it's be fun to see you try all the diff main characters!
How is this exactly what I needed?? I'm the same, the older I get the further I venture into the depths of vintage fashion.... And lately I've definitely been gravitating more and more towards the Edwardian/Victorian era. So thank you for this!
I'm in LOVE with your top. That's exactly what I want to do, mix edwardian with modern styles. Also I really haven't ever given a fluff what people think about what I am wearing, been dressing "weird" since I was in high school and I'm now 32.
The blouse you are wearing is exactly what I've been looking for. Been searching etsy for weeks and I can't seem to find the right one. This video is exactly what I needed, since I'm trying to dress more edwardian inspired 😄 thank you so much Rachel. You are such an inspiration! ❤
I'm here watching your videos and I can only think that you were definitely are some type of time-traveler, as you look stunningly beautiful in any style you try from previous centuries 🖤
Edwardian was my first proper venture into vintage dressing back in the 80s when Out of Africa changed my life. (If you haven’t seen the movie, treat yourself) I had an ankle length beige skirt and stole one of my father’s linen jackets which I wrapped and belted to look more safari and ankle boots with heels and laces. It startled the small market town I lived in but I loved that outfit! :)
I am super excited to add more Edwardian chic to my wardrobe. I have an Edwardian cotton vintage inspired swimming costume, aka swim dress with bloomers and I adore it so much!
Omg when you let out your hair before putting it up, when it was super floofy. I immediately felt like I want to see you cosplay as Merida!! Both movie version but also as a part of "but make it vintage"!!
OMG, this came at the best time ever!!! I'm planning a Mary Poppins cosplay (literaly started today) and here you are providing me with ideas of how to dress edwardian 😍😍😍 Great video and information, btw Rachel! Many thanks 💗
Hoory for Bernadette mention, Im so glad you like her stuff too! Have you seent he stuff her buddy is doing for Lady Watson? Super fun! I think the phrase "How you choose to decorate your meatbag is up to you " is now in our family lexicon. Also, needs to go on merch.

Rachel's humor is so specifically exactly the humor I enjoy I feel like she just popped into existence right out of my mindhole
same here it's simply the b-e-s-t
mindhole.
when you were talking about the skirts i was just waiting for bernadette banner to be mentioned, haha
Mom: "What are you doing? You're going to be late!" Me: "I'm trying to figure out how to decorate my meat bag!"
There's just something that feels just that little bit _extra_ with a long skirt.
@@katherinemorelle7115 I was going to suggest black snail as well!
"I've said this before but we are just a bunch of meatbags. The way you choose to decorate *your* meatbag is up to you." (9:33)

This is very extra, and I love it. Thank you so much.
Love this decade on you, the natural makeup and curly updo looks Amazing.
Bernadette Banner is honestly the best, so interesting and great to watch!
"The way you choose to decorate your meatbag is up to you." - Rachel Maksy
Truer words were *never* spoken.
Hehe definitely! NO RUUUUULES
That green maxi skirt and ruffled blouse totally gave me pirate vibes 🥰 you should do a grace O’Malley costume 🤗
You could wear anything from any time period and you would look amazing
You also have the blog "vintage dancer", they have articles about men's and women's fashions from the victorian era to the 1970s :) !
I love the high waisted loose pants tucked into boots with the Edwardian top! It comes across kind of steampunk/historical AU
I love this video so much. I have gotten really into Edwardian fashion this year and have slowly been trying to collect blouses that suit. Bernadette’s videos are also so fantastic to show those traditional ways of sewing , I’m always speechless at the time she takes for hand sewing.
As always love your bloopers at the end 😂😍
Also, on the topic of wearing what you want, I was hesitant to wear 40s 50s, but only get huuuuuge compliments on m.
One of the best bits of fashion advice I’ve ever gotten is that anything you wear will work as long as you’re confident and love what you’re wearing other people will love it as well
Yees the video I have searched for for so long, finally done by the best-dressed and funniest youtuber! So excited to watch the video !!
Ahhh thank you sweetest 😭
Notification popped up and I just immediately smiled! Love when we just don't give a fluff
Every time I see photos from the Edwardian era, i'm reminded of the photo's I've seen of Swedish teachers during the 1800s and early 1900s (the industrial revolution came a century later for us). Super great video! I really like the "Don't Give a Fluff" segment, and it's now my new motto.
I can imagine a girl in the 1940’s digging through her mom and grandma’s old blouses to be the vintage chic girl of her day.
I can't believe that the blouse you are wearing in this video was made in the 70's, it looks so perfect.
Vintage Laura Ashley is a great choice for Edwardian inspired clothes.
Dawn Lovejoy It’s so good and so expensive on eBay though
The “Edwardian bandwagon” graphic made me laugh out loud, thank you for that😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I really love the idea of playing with style and would love to incorporate a vintage vibe😉 into wardrobe but have no idea where to start and at 46 years old I also worry that I would just look old and out of date rather then intentional 🤷♀️. I love that you do you, and I love your channel 🥰 thanks
YAS THIS MY ERA 🙌🙌🙌 I loved this video! I've started wearing my flouncy Edwardian tops with dungarees as I like that kind of industrial/historical maah-up kinda look 👌
as soon as you said meatbag my brain immediately took the initiative to overwrite the lyrics of teenage dirtbag in my head
CUZ IM JUST A TEENAGE MEATBAG BABEEEEY

Two More Tips to consider for a Edwardian look;
1) Wear a simple cotton petticoat under whatever skirt you own.
This reminds me of the 50s Teddy Girls, who mixed Edwardian blouses with utility trousers, one of my favourite vintage looks
Your videos are always my favorite way to end my day ❤️❤️❤️
I was like oooh I hope this is the Rachel vid when I got the notif- and it is! I love your hair and you suit vintage so well!
❤️❤️😊😊😊😊
Total Anne of Green Gables vibes at the beginning
I love your insights into fashion, the way you incorporate different eras into your daily life is so inspiring and fun! Thanks for being you and sharing your thoughts with all of us. I look forward to your videos so much!
The Edwardian bandwagon was worth the effort - it made me smile 😊😘
Thank you so much Rachel!! I start my first job this Friday at a Victorian/Edwardian shop and this really helped me figure out what I should wear to make a good impression. Thank you!!
I'm in love with this look, you're killing it 👏🏼👏🏼💖
Also I'd love to suggest a princess bride look book! I think it's be fun to see you try all the diff main characters!
i want a shirt or a pin that says "Who cares what the weenies think."
💁😊😊😊
Or "I just don't give a fluff!" :)
Oh my goodness BOTH! That would be a great merch pin set! 😉😉😉
Or "we are all meat bags". I can't decide which one I would prefer lol
Here for this merch
3:11 Now I know that Sophie Hatter's style in Howl's Moving Castle was inspired by the Edwardian era ❤❤
I love you! Seriously, I'm inspired by your attitude on who gives a fluff! People should dress how the feel best about themselves.
I love watching you, even when you're not talking about something I'm not particularly interested in. You're just very entertaining.
Thank you love! ❤️
