( www.TFLcar.com ) It's not too often we get to test a fun manual car on the track, let alone four of them! In this video, we pitch the 2020 Mazda MX-5 Miata against the Honda Civic Si, Mini John Cooper Works GP and the recently updated Honda Civic Type R to see which is the quickest and the most fun in a drag race, and which one we'd actually buy with our own money.

I've never seen anything like it. Honda probably made it as difficult to crack as Fort Knox because a large proportion of Civic or Si owners are probably 18-28 years old. But I can't picture a FWD Civic swinging it's tail out that easily. You'd have to drive like a total hooligan to do that. It's dumb.

@Mikie Jones stock is 306hp/295lb so about ~300hp at the wheels is average stock. With basic bolt-on parts and a tune you're looking at anywhere between 350 to 400 but the tune is essential to get those gains. The ECU in the car is smart enough that if you do FBO parts without a tune you will see minimal gains... maybe 320-340 as it's going to automatically compensate for that change to try and keep you in factory specs. A simple drop-in filter will give you +10hp in this car, where a $1400 intake will only give you +20hp. That same intake with a tune and you're looking at +50hp. With a totally stock car + tune you can easily get an extra 40-50hp out of this car depending on how aggressive you are with the tables.

I don't know why they wouldn't have the Veloster N? If you check the stats, it runs within a tenth of a second up to 50 mph against the Type R. It isn't until higher speeds that the Type R really starts to pull on the Veloster N. It can run very close to the Type R is a short drag race. It's also $5K cheaper (leaving you plenty of money for a full exhaust and tuning which would bring the "N" right up to Type R straight line speeds.

What's funny or not, you can get the new LT1 Camaro (455 hp LT1 engine - but not with the SS package) for less than a Civic Type R. It runs low 12s @ 116 mph in the 1/4 mile, which absolutely destroys the Civic Type R in a drag race. If you want to go fast in a straight line, it can't be beat for straight line speed. You can also spend a couple grand on wider wheels and tires for the LT1 Camaro and it will fly around a road course.

Just a thought Roman - have you ever considered doing rolling acceleration test? I know there is a limited amount of straight track to allow cars to fully extend themselves and rolling starts could limit that even more but maybe you can have two cars together coming around the last turn at, say, 10 mph in 1st gear or something similar and then hit the gas at the starting line. You could eliminate the issues that some traction control systems have on cars and still have enough track length to effectively see which car is faster before running out of room.
Jus something to think about adding to your battery of test.

Traction control in my 6MT 2.0L Civic only requires a simple press of the button. Granted, it's still there if the car is going to spin-out, but it'll let you fry the tires bald if you wanted. I guess a car with sunroof and a cushy ride doesn't expect real performance maniacs behind the wheels.
