You didn't cover why a steering wheel would be off-center if the issue is not anything to do with your alignment, suspension, or tires. My 2018 Passat alignment and tires are perfect, car tracks and drives straight as an arrow and doesn't drift either way, but to drive perfectly straight my wheel has to be turned to the right 20 degrees. Very frustrating, especially when the dealer tells you there's nothing wrong with it and won't acknowledge the crooked wheel!
A warped rear axle can do it too. I had that on an Abarth 500. Even just a mm out will be noticable and the rears can't be adjusted enough on most cars to compensate
Some cases you need master mechanics to fix stuff like this and it may require welding and most places just don't wanna deal with it. They will send u on your way if the car at least drives straight
a crooked steering wheel with a vehicle that tracks straight will be because of the steer ahead setting being applied to an already crooked steering wheel. If the wheel is locked straight and central and then the alignment is carried out and the steer ahead setting is verified, this issue will be solved. Basically, this will only happen because the steering wheel was not locked properly straight when it was aligned.
After the 17th "guys" and telling me that I need to check my tire pressure (duh!) I couldn't bear it anymore. For his sake I hope he doesn't speak like that in real life. Bless him 🤣
I ran over something big and metal in my lane on the interstate near a construction area, and couldn't avoid it in time. Now, my traction control lights are on and my steering wheel alignment is off to the right and the steering feels more loose than it did normally. I hope it doesn't cost me a huge amount to fix. 2020 model car...
@@divinelavette2269 oh yea it was a lot unfortunately, front crossmember needed to be replaced, traction sensors replaced, alignment, it cost me like 3500 that included a rental. It was a mess.
I hit a pothole 2 weeks ago, the front left tyre blew and the steering was off. The tyre shop inspected the tyre and advised that there was no visible damage to the tyre, just the air had gone out of it. They inflated the tyre and did the wheel alignment. But the car was still pulling to the right when I let go of the steering wheel and the steering wheel pointed to the right. The tracking was done again, but the problem still persists that the car is pulling to the right. I do not know what to do next. It is really frustrating. Your video is really good and informative. Thank you
@@muhammadtantowijauhari4688 Thank you for replying. No updates yet. They have changed a few suspension parts, but the problem persists. It's getting expensive now
@Shane_Finnegan I went to a different tyre shop to get the alignment done again. They also straightened the steering wheel as this was pointing to the right. My mechanic changed the front left shock, but the correct alignment sorted out the issue. The tyre shop advised that even a slight adjustment makes a difference. If you leave it as it is, the tyres wear quicker and the steering is off. The roads here are terrible. Potholes everywhere. Thank you for your interest and reply.
Hey, when I let go of my steering wheel the car tracks straight, but my steering wheel is off to the left when holding it, if I centre the steering wheel it pulls the car to the right, any idea what is up ? I had tracking done, maybe it was a bad alignment?
My steering wheel is like 90° to the side. I had the rack and pinion replaced and when I got it back it was like that. Would it be likely it just needs an alignment?? I took it to a backyard mechanic, because that's all I could afford at the time. I didn't think it would be a big problem, and at first it wasn't, but now it shakes violently if I get to 30 mph...I just want it back but I don't know what to do!
My steering wheel have to be turned few degrees to opposite of where road is declining. Can it be suspension, ball joint or anti-roll bar? 8th gen Civic.
Hello, my steering is not straight. It is 13 degree off. Will this make tracking light come on? It is reading error "steering angle sensor impulse" Thank you (Y)
Same question but I don't know how many degrees it's off. I know I'm over turning my steering wheel. Just to turn a corner. I just got an alignment in october
@@Undertheseaa94 I've done my second alignment with Firestone but they didn't fix it. I took it back in and complain and they did another alignment again but still didn't fix it. At this point I'm pretty frustrated and haven't drive my truck much anymore. My brother in-law told me to find a legit pro alignment shop instead that are pro when it comes to alignment and I may go that route instead.
How much unaligned is the steering wheel? When you drive are you able to still maintain your driving straight or do you shift off the side? For me I'm able to drive straight no issues but the steering wheel is not straight so when I do position my steering wheel I moved left about 10 degrees. I am not sure if that's safe or dangerous but definitely not normal and it's upsetting. Chong I hope you find the solution to get it fixed soon

My BMW x5 e53 steering wheel was to the left tried everything nothing worked. So I had a bad ball joint had it fixed and hey presto it lined straight now. So try ball joint if this happened to you
My steering wheel is off because my stupid alignment tech doesnt center the wheel and use the lock then do the adjustments. I always have to take it back to them.
THE BRO COOK no use . I take it to the dealer for a week and they do two time wheels alignment and check the steering system no fault . They give me the car same problem,
THE BRO COOK I will try to lose the bolt under steering column and twist it then adjusted from front sway bar . Maybe will works. Because each time I turn that bar adjuster and center the steering then while pull to right side when u drive on highway.
My 08 328i steerring became really stiff after changing the strut, and i had to also re align the wheel and the inner and outer rods were replaced and aligned right before. Any ideas?
I know this sucks to hear but if you change one strut you should always change the other side as well. This is with pretty much any suspension component. Think: if you have a brand new suspension part on one side, and an older and more worn out part on the other side, that is definitely going to mess with your suspension and make it feel sluggish and off.

cant we just straighten the wheels and take the steering wheel off then center it and put it back on? seems like a simpler solution to me
The input shaft on the steering wheel is likely keyed so that the wheel only goes on in one orientation So you probably can't do that..
Older cars you could, newer cars not.
Yea it's annoying. It would be so much easier if you could do that on modern cars.
