In my experience of getting wheel alignment, none of these tyre centres are using the clamp that fits up under the bottom of the steering wheel, and the top of the drivers seat. This clamp obviously hold the steering wheel in place, while the mechanic carries out the wheel alignment. It's very frustrating. Tanx for the very beneficial upload !!! 👌
thanks for the video. ive taken my car many times to align and the steering wheel always crooked. mines the same as your vid it drifts to the right when steering wheel is straight gonna try it home later!
I did this today it only need about a half a turn - I would say I was at 11:30 probably on the steering wheel. One turn on most cars is pretty drastic. Nice video thanks for posting
Wanted to say thank you! Like you and many others I had an alignment done after having my rack and pinion changed out in my 2012 Toyota Tundra. Like yours my steering wheel was slightly cocked right driving me nuts but not so much i felt like spending half a day at the dealership correcting it. Only difference between my truck and your Audi, much larger tie rods and they were kinda tough to get that nut loose. One small suggestion to others. I started with a half turn as opposed to a full turn. After test driving the steering wheel was cocked the other direction. Jacked the truck back up and reversed it a 1/4 turn and it’s now perfect. 1 full turn is quite a bit depending on the vehicle and how off the steering wheel is. May want to start with a 1/2 turn and go from there. Thanks again, great video!
Glad it worked! Yeah different cars will differ. On my Supra I did about a 1/4th turn to fix it. The Audi just happened to need a full turn. Easy fix tho for sure!
I needed 2 full turns on either side the first time. Then after tie rod replacement to pass MOT it was 5/6 of a turn. I did 1 full turn and it was a tiny bit off in the other direction, so sighed, jacked it up and took the wheels off and subtracted 1/6 of a turn.
Thank you for the very instructive video. My steering wheel "points to" 1 o´clock (slightly right), and I want thus adjust it counterclockwise to "noon".
Thank you Bros 4 speed for your explanation. Note if the tie rod ends are infront of the centre axle, the adjustments are the opposite way round. Same principle.

Thanks for this vid! Here in the UK they do a rubbish job too and it’s never straight after getting alignment done. I’ve got OCD and my steering wheel needs to be straight! I’m going to give it go 👍
I have the same problem with my Nissan Quest and Toyota Camry. I thought it was an alignment issue and would have taken the car to the shop. But with this video's help I'm going to fix it myself.
Make sure your alignment is good tho first. This fix is geared towards cars that just got an alignment and now the steering wheel is off. If its been a while since you've had an alignment, this might not fully solve the issue
Installed a new tie rod because of rattling going over bumps, and vibration when braking at higher speed, mechanic couldn’t figure out what was causing it, so I replaced the tie rod myself and was able to get the steering wheel back to straight again from being off centered. Holding it at 12:10 to drive straight was killing me. So I adjusted the set screw and within a couple try’s, my wheel was straight again. Saved time because I would have taken the entire tie rod off again to re count the 14 rotations or just add/minus but your way was much faster 🙏🏼 thanks again!!!
Yeah just look at which way your threads go and either shorten or lengthen the tie rod end of the desired direction to turn the wheel. I did this on my Supra and everything was the opposite way from the S3
I’m having the same issue with my duramax! I’m gonna try this. Dropped the truck off to get an alignment done today, drove the truck, still had this issue.
I hope you are changing your own oil, brakes, plugs, and other maintenance as well. Good you are using a torque wrench on the wheel lug nuts. I would put a little of threadlock on that tie rod.
I did tie rod assembly replacement in my E150...Hopped in for test drive and steering wheel 90 degrees off, doh! Took me three attempts to get it really dialed in level while also aligned, but it's doable in the driveway with a little trial and error.
Well we need the car driving straight! Did this on my Supra too since I had the same issue. Check out tomorrow's video. We ad midpipes on her new RS3. She's a car girl, so making these cars more fun is always good to go!
Yeah it's my OCD no doubt. Hate it too. Unfortunately, I caught a bump hauling ass around a corner yesterday and now my wheel is at almost 1 o'clock with the car headed straight. Doesn't pull or anything so I'll have to try this. THX.
I can't wait to try this! My wheel ( after a recall ) has been slightly down on the left which is really annoying. Thanks for a great video. Subscribed.
I had my car aligned recently and it was slightly off brought it back the guys said yeah it was a bit but its now fixed, it wasn't so im left with doing it myself, thanks for the explanation will try this soon, its driving me nuts have the steering slightly off in the motorway
The road does have a pitch to it in the middle, so you have to account for that. Your steering wheel could be perfectly straight, but it will then have to be tilted slightly to the left driving on most roads to account for the degree to which the road is tilted to assist water runoff. There are no perfectly flat roads IMO.
Yeah thats what I tested it on the flat spot in my street. That way I was in the middle of the hump. But on every single road Im on, the car drifted. So the car was for sure going in the wrong direction
Because most shops are terrible, they set overall toe and not individual toe. Ask to see the computer print out, your overall toe can be in spec but individual toe out of spec. 95 percent of shops are toe and go shops, good alignment shops are hard to find.
Interesting. But the shops I go to do individual toe. Each wheel they make right and make sure overall is set. It's just when they line up the steering wheel, sometimes they do it crooked. Just had my Supra aligned and the wheel is straight
I have had this issue recently but some things make sense like if it’s set to factory setting at a dealership but the steering is off it might be worn bushes or shocks but you end up having to replace everything to get it perfect lower arms bushes top mounts 😞 the other is to take the wheel off and adjust it that way 🤦
It will depend on the threads. Look at the direction they go and determine if you need to expand the tie rod or make it smaller. One side will need to be expanded, the other side will need to be made smaller
Unless Audi has some different threads, I did that on my 2016 Ford Focus and my crookedness was similar to the one depicted in the video but all I needed was just 1/8 of a turn to make the steering wheel straight so one full turn I agree seems to be pretty drastic.
Like I mentioned in the video it will depend on your car. Not every car will be the exact same amount of turns. On my Supra I had this issue and did about 1/4th turn. So trial and error until you get it right
My SUV has the same issue but I noticed something too... when I brake and leave my hands off the wheel, it drifts to the right while the steering wheel is turning straight (I have the same crooked wheel issue as you had, its crooked to the left a little bit), do you think it has to do with this issue too? Hopefull you respond as I've taking it to allightment 2 times and it seems they don't understand my problem.
My dealer managed to offset the steering wheel an entire 10 degrees during an alignment when replacing the front subframe under recall. It's not even like "oh, it's crooked".
I gotta try this I have the same problem. For the driver's side I need it to be going left so I turn it clockwise or anti clockwise. The passenger it clockwise.
Thanks for the vid, so.. ive had my bmw 428 alignment done two time now and the shop says perfectly fine. However 95% of the time im driving with right hand down, you can see the padel shifer are a perfect reference for this. When i let go of the wheel the car tracks fairly straight but wheel remains kinked to the right. Like you say is driving me insane. Any ideas?? Cheers.
Yeah as long as you know your alignment is good, this is how you can adjust the steering wheel to get it straight. I did this on my Supra after doing a new wheel as well
Just did this! Thanks for the video. It only took 1/4 turn to move my Volvo steering wheel about 5-10 degrees!. Had to do the procedure 2x. But I am happier now. Do you think the alignment will be off ?
If your car is drifting left with your steering wheel straight. You need to turn your steering wheel towards the left. Also make sure you've had a professional alignment done first. That way you know the alignment is good. Then if while driving straight your steering wheel is crooked, make the adjustments to straighten it out
Hey man, how much should you torque that nut? You kinda skipped that part. Is it like just hand tight around 35 foot pounds or as tight as possible using two wrenches, one to hold the rod from spinning? Does that sound about right?
Hello you probably won’t see this comment but will this work on a 2006 Honda pilot because every time I drive it goes to the right as well when I keep it straight it’s annoying trying to keep it centered when I’m driving on the road especially on the free way
Yeah every car should be like this. Make sure you do have an up to date alignment tho. And then from there, its it's still crooked, you can do these adjustments to fix it

I learned this from my local tuning shop lol
They did this on my last Supra so when the problem popped up on the S3 I knew how to fix it
Yeah it's my OCD no doubt. Hate it too. Unfortunately, I caught a bump hauling ass around a corner yesterday and now my wheel is at almost 1 o'clock with the car headed straight. Doesn't pull or anything so I'll have to try this. THX.
Oh dang! You might want an alignment first tho. That bump could have got things out of wack
Glad to help. Yeah it drives me crazy too!
You earn my sub bro thanks from philippines
Thanks for the sub!
Keep bring it to the steelership and they keep telling me that it was straight 🙈 no it is not, now I will fix it by myself, thank you!
lol yeah thats why I like just doing things myself. I know I'll do it right the first time
The road does have a pitch to it in the middle, so you have to account for that.
So basically equal turns on both sides is the easiest way to fix this. Got it thanks
Yes! As long as your alignment is in check, just keep your turns equal and you wont mess up your toe
Straight to the point. Well done. Get some real wrenches that Audi and your knuckles will love you. 👍
Yeah easy project to knock out. I have a lot more tools since making this video lol
I have had this issue recently but some things make sense like if it’s set to factory setting at a dealership but the steering is off it might be worn bushes or shocks but you end up having to replace everything to get it perfect lower arms bushes top mounts 😞 the other is to take the wheel off and adjust it that way 🤦
Do you turn the wrench the same direction when adjusting the tie rod for both sides? Or do you have to do the opposite direction?
It will depend on the threads. Look at the direction they go and determine if you need to expand the tie rod or make it smaller. One side will need to be expanded, the other side will need to be made smaller
Thanks very much for sharing this! Much appreciated!
My pleasure!
Can you do this with the tires on the vehicle? I have a Nissan Titan Truck and have the same problem.
It might be harder, unless you can reach around and get access to what you need too.
So trial and error until you get it right
Omg i thought it was just me.. i'll try this myself
Its a great tip for sure!
Thank you very much for the detailed video
Glad it was helpful!
Great video buddy👍🇨🇦🇨🇱
Thanks 👍 Great tip to know!
Just did my tie rod ends. My steering wheel is off at like 2/3 oclock. Im surprised its off so much considering i made sure it was the same as it was
Interesting. Are the new tires rods the same length? Might just need more adjustments.
Why did you get an alignment in the first place? Thank you.I have a V8 RS5, don't let any strange hands touch it.
Oh wow! Don't know how they dont catch that
I have BMW 2022 330E! will it be the same instructions?
Should be very similar concept
@@BrosFOURRSpeed thank you bro, I took a look n I saw the same piece u turned so I’ll do it wen i have time. Thanks 🙏
Thank you, this helps all lot😁🤙🏽
No problem 👍
I gotta try this I have the same problem. For the driver's side I need it to be going left so I turn it clockwise or anti clockwise. The passenger it clockwise.
Make sure each side gets the opposite turn direction. One side will need to be shortened and the other will need to be lengthened.
@@BrosFOURRSpeed Thanks for the info
@@MIKEYSREVIEWS no problem!
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Any ideas?? Cheers.
great stuff
Thanks!
Just bought a Honda civic and this steering wheel is pointing to the passenger side while driving straight lol
Oh dang. This should help!
I have to turn my steering wheel to the o'clock position for it to goes straight after my alignment. Any suggestions?
I just changed my steering wheel to a aftermarket one and I have that exact problem can I do this to fix the problem?
Yeah as long as you know your alignment is good, this is how you can adjust the steering wheel to get it straight. I did this on my Supra after doing a new wheel as well
Just did this! Thanks for the video. It only took 1/4 turn to move my Volvo steering wheel about 5-10 degrees!. Had to do the procedure 2x. But I am happier now.
Do you think the alignment will be off ?
Nice! As long as you did equal turns each side it shouldn't effect the alignment. Provided your alignment was already good.
Thank you brother!
So remove the tires and lift the car the best way to do? My crosstrek front left tires dift slightly to the left, which way should I turn it?
If your car is drifting left with your steering wheel straight. You need to turn your steering wheel towards the left. Also make sure you've had a professional alignment done first. That way you know the alignment is good. Then if while driving straight your steering wheel is crooked, make the adjustments to straighten it out
Is it mandatory to take the wheels off?
Nope. I did this on my Supra and didn't need to remove the wheels ruclips.net/video/4vVlbeEkVf8/видео.html
I just hydro planed into a wall in my Miata and my straight is 76 degrees right now. You think I can do this myself? 😂
I'm sure you could make it better. But you should probably have a good alignment done first
@@BrosFOURRSpeed yea I’m going through insurance. That shit was terrifying man lmao. Just lost all control and I have nearly new tires. Dope vid btw
Oh I bet! Just crashed one of my cars on track. Slick ground left me with no brakes. Not a fun feeling for sure! Glad you liked the video
Hey man, how much should you torque that nut? You kinda skipped that part. Is it like just hand tight around 35 foot pounds or as tight as possible using two wrenches, one to hold the rod from spinning? Does that sound about right?
Yeah just hand tight. Probably around 30-40 pounds. Yes two winches is ideal to tighten against each other and not spin it
Thanks. What is it with these alignment shops?
Just how some people line up the wheel. Or the wheel could move a bit when they do the alignment. So it's hit or miss some times
And then from there, its it's still crooked, you can do these adjustments to fix it
do i need to turn on the car while adjusting or just leave it off and the steering wheel deadcenter
Leave the car off. It's all a mechanical adjustment. So super simple
I wish my car had threads this fine.
Yeah not every car will be identical
