Michael O'Donoghue (January 5, 1940 - November 8, 1994) was an American writer and performer. He was known for his dark and destructive style of comedy and humor, and was a major contributor to National Lampoon magazine. He was the first head writer of Saturday Night Live and the first performer to deliver a line on the series.
I would like to feed your fingertips to the wolverines.
Thanks so much! Belushi interviews are so rare
Not a ton of Michael O’donahugh either
There’s like two on RUclips currently and in the other one he’s high
Most of them are Dan Akyroyd cutting him off
You're correct they are very rare!!!
WOW, This is a blast from the past. The NYC I remember.
Who are the other two they are not Belushi or Donhonue????
@@asdfzxcv3617 Going from the right David Brenner, Steve Allen, John Belushi, Bill Boggs (Hosting the sit down) and Michael O'Donoghue...
EDIT: This was from a popular day time talk show called "Midday with Bill Boggs". This sit down was considered "Edgy" comedy during these times due to their reputation (Belushi and O'Donoghue)...
@@GordiansKnotHere Thank you so much!!!!
BELUSHI is the best ever in the 70s on live tv. He touched multiple multiple generation since and even now
Steve Allen reactions is truly epic and priceless!
This is from an episode of Midday with Bill Boggs, a local NYC program. O'Donoghue was one of the most savage writers National Lampoon Magazine ever had. By the time he came to SNL's debut in 1975 as head writer (with Chevy Chase), he had already established himself as, like other Lampoon writer/editors such as the equally legendary Doug Kenney, one of America's greatest satirists. Belushi had also worked with O'Donoghue on the Lampoon Radio Hour in 1973. Most forget that all SNL really was when it debuted was National Lampoon Magazine, the TV version.
O’Donoghue is criminally underrated, and in a world that reveres contemporary comedy so much people should know more about him. They should teach O’Donoghue in schools to children. He’d love that.

Seriously thank you SO MUCH for the upload. Have been wanting to watch this interview since first reading about it years ago. Super funny. O'D is awesome :)
This interview is madness.
Interviewer's name is Bill Boggs...he's the only person still alive on that stage as of 11/30/20
Awesome! This is on my playlist. Ty to the channel owner for posting the Albanian Tasmanian coked up devil!
Holy Moly what did I just watch...? Awesome
A coke fueled circus, and Steve Allen.
One of the most bizzare interviews I've ever seen
THANK YOU so much for posting this
They just light up and puff away...how times have changed
Michael O'Donoghue was a genius
He was also a maniac. I read the SNL book and the stories about him were nuts.
@@snoopywriter3643 Exactly lol
Brain hemorrhage
@@sdovas Unfortunately yes. At his wake, he had pics the x ray that showed his brain on display per his request.
The stuff he wrote for National Lampoon is even better than his SNL sketches. He was just a talented writer in any medium. Even the stuff he wrote for Spin Magazine right before he died was really good.
2:20 “you talking to me” “I’m talking to you there’s nobody else here”
I love Belushi's the Tax Driver reference that nobody else there picked up on!
John Belushi was so CUTE!!! 🥰
Yesss 😍
easy would
Belushi was a legend!!!
never saw this, i thought i saw everything belushi did ,thank you
09:22 John Belushi
“ Nice beard you know the 60s are over don’t you”
That’s 77’ Punk Rock Right F’n there maaan
That epitomizes the Athos of the 1977 CBGB’s punk rock scene that he was part of
shortly after became friends with not only the Dead Boys but Lee Ving of FEAR
Wow, thanks for this interview! At 4:22, they brought performers on drugs and he instantly tried to think of what to say while looking down and at 7:02, talked on how they affect stage presence and at this time he was already 2-3 years into his cocaine/heroin addiction. If only he wasn’t in denial and had the knowledge to stop. There’s not many of like them and won’t ever be. He was so talented, loved by so many, and a huge influence on some of the greatest actors and comedians that have walked the earth.... and so far ahead of his time. I was so hurt hearing he died on the news... He impacted so many. Unfortunately, just like Farley, they both had certain personas they had to live up to on the camera. He was one of the biggest stars in the comedy scene at his time and drugs were plentiful, free (or cheap), and I’m sure he got the strongest of them during the 70s - early 80s. When you are being offered and given drugs almost everywhere became a serious addiction fast and he struggled for 7 slow and, in my opinion, miserable years until his death. With his addiction and the field of work he was in, it becomes a life line for every problem- ie. mood, long hours of work, anxieties, stage freight, confidence, sleep deprivation, depression etc. When you don’t the drugs as a life line, he probably could not see himself as the same comedian and person he was not only on camera but in everyday life to cause an inevitable death. If only he didn’t hang out with Cathy that night, she shot him up with 11 speedballs and finished by injecting him with straight heroin. He is missed by many even to this day and his work will forever be eternalized.
Rest In Peace Bluto/Joliet. Forever a legend.
13 to 18 speedball injections is enough to kill 5 people. Especially since he wasn't used to using the needle. I heard it was 13 shots but some people claim it was as many as 18.
Yes. Damn drugs
But John Was not acting normal
Of all these people Belushi was the confirmed drug user, and he was, ironically, the most correct about drugs. He had no illusions it was related to his comic ability at all.
"claudine longet ski tournament" loved that bit
Wonderful rare interviews of doomed stars. thank you!
I’m watching Belushi being interviewed and then Steve Allen suddenly appears lol
Read Steve Allens book More Funny People which has a chapter on Belushi and mentions this interview here
that unprofessional woman who came on to interrupt things seemed to set Belushi off on a rampage at the end..
Yeah. That was so gauche. Idk who let her do that.
What a RARE FIND !😉✌
water everywhere and table smashed. That's belushi saying: this is what you get for putting me out there.. LOL
Possibly both Belushi and O'Donoghue are so intelligent they need the marijuana to slow their brains enough to focus on one creative thought at a time.
11:18 oooooh, that bombed so hard. Michael was too ahead of his time. The crowd sounds like they're all still Silent Generation or Depression era people. It sounds more normal now.
Odonohue would’ve thrived in the last 10-15 years had he lived.
@@mperrotti76 well, perhaps until his inevitable cancellation.
This interview is very haunting knowing what happens to Belushi
Steve Allen says the best musicians screwed themselves up with drugs while sitting next to Belushi
Weird they're talking about drug use and working and belushi died from an overdose
Miss you John...
Gotta love the dark shades on these guys during the interview .

John getting crazy! Pours water on the host, kicks over/breaks the table.
He learned from Brando how to smash up a set
Is the host confusing Belushi with Andy Kaufman with the demand for an Elvis impression?
Belushi did do an Elvis impression occasionally, but Kaufman actually became Elvis. belushi also did a foreign man character on the first ever SNL sketch, which is another parallel between the two. And when Belushi died, Kaufman allegedly thought he was stealing his bit of faking his own death. Anyway, they're both giants.
Brings back that horrid feeling of cocaine use.
I really enjoyed cocaine, except for the severe panic attacks where it felt like my heart was going to explode. I didn’t like that part.
@@codeblue8922 What a horrible feeling. No thanks!!!
If this gives yo ua horrid feeling ,Then I do not recommend watching the "Chris Farley on Leno Jan 1997" video. That was the year Chris died, he was completely off the deep end in that interview, he would disguise it well due to him being very energetic with his physical comedy but you could tell he was absolutely off the deep end. At 6:20 in that video his nose starts to bleed...it's insanity and eerie to watch knowing what we know now
@@mariusloveless7880 It's like watching someone self destruct, and you can't do a damn thing about it. 😔😔😔😔
@@mariusloveless7880 - Ohhh, I know the exact video you speak of. It's painfully uncomfortable & downright scary. Many of Chris's talk show appearances are. He rarely went onstage not high out of his skull, rumor has it. So sad.
I think just maybe
...these guys are on the dope.
This is gold !!!
Allen and Belushi sitting next to each other in the same interview. A very uneasy one, but a rarity nonetheless.
Were they adversaries at some point? I Was just wondering, I.m a huge Belushi fan!
@@lexhashim8671 If they were I'm not sure, to me this looks like more of a generational gap, John did make Steve laugh a couple times here, and Mr. Allen was all class.
@@lexhashim8671 no. I just think Allen is in a different league. He’s older, a bit more “square”, def straight and sober. He’s still a legend in his own right. Belushi is prob showing off a bit, or trying to show up Allen as he’s clearly all coked up. Apparently, he met and partied all night the host at a club the night before and asked who was on. When he heard it was Steve Allen he said I’ll be there and showed up with odonohue with out being booked.
Find Steve Allens book "More Funny People" he talks about this interview.
@@lexhashim8671 Steve Allen didn't like him.
They did not prebook belushi , and he had been partying all night , so he was a bit worse for wear here.
Yeah I get wired just looking at him
Yeah. The host and belushi met at an NYC clubs and partied all night. When he heard Steve Allen was the guest he said “wow! I’ll be there!” And showed up after binging all night.
@@mperrotti76 Thanks. Is this backstory in a book or video? I always love to learn more about John.
It's never a good sign, when host talks more than his guests.
Steve Allen talks about this interview in his book More Funny People and mentions that Belushi only could project Agressiveness but not charm
What is that supposed to mean??? John had an aura when he was on the stage. Don't be fooled.
@@johnrotten3268 read the book, was only telling what it said
It seems to me Steve Allen had an opinion on everyone but himself. I was surprised to hear him throw Charlie Parker under the bus as well.
@@johnrotten3268 I didn't see charm there. nope.
@@prayingmantis6777 what he was trying to do was change the course of the conversation as was Brenner. Just in case some one was listening and learning. The two were saying, we're famous and have been for years, and we don't need the fix. His point about Parker was giving him credit for being a genius without the drugs. Nope he was not throwing him under the bus.
5:09 haha. Everybody knew Carson did blow.

Michael & John with the deadly tobacco drug which helped kill both of them AND David Brenner, too.

Mike was a king
Chainsmoking, in sunglasses. When wasn't Belushi totally high? 😒😎
Probably in middle school
Belushi and O'Donoghue both from Doug Kenney’s National Lampoon.
Y’all remember when SNL was funny!!

This is not the perfect audience for high octane John. More of an intervention.

Def not weed. Def coke.
Will Ferrell hosting
Michael O' Donahue doin" the Hunter S. Thompson bald short hair look of the 70's.
These guys are beyond full of themselves. Steve Allen is smarter than anyone else sitting there.
Two telling things about Belushi; as soon as female performers/writers were brought up at 2:00, he said "forget it; they won't come, they said they don't like you". According to Jane Curtain, Belushi went out of his way to prevent women writer's material from being used on the show, saying "women can't be funny", right in front of their faces; including Jane Curtain and the others. The Only female performer he didn't insult was Gilda Radner, for some unknown reason. Also, at 8:00, Belushi says "You're overemphasizing this whole drug use thing".
Belushi got to the point where he was so stoned he could barely perform during the show, and died from a heroin overdose four years after this.
Here's the eerie part: they wrote a part for Belushi on the show called "Don't Look Back in Anger", shot in black and white, where he plays an old 80 year-old Jewish version of himself, at a cemetery, where all the other SNL performers were buried. He'd outlived them all. He goes over to Garrett Morris's grave and says "poor Garrett; died of a heroin overdose in 1980". He got a big laugh from that. John Belushi died of a heroin overdose in 1982.
Coke feeds egos. I’ve seen it.
He was basically Murdered by a stupid girlfriend..... But yeah drugs are bad ......turns out so are some people what a great girlfriend!.....
You could see the changes in John because of his drug use. Very sad
