    Not sure why Primary Arms doesn't see a market for 2-12. To me, it's the new 3-9. Great for hunting, plinking, target shooting, and tac-tie-cool applications out to 1,000ish. Not the best for ultra precision long range or CQB, but fits nearly everything in between. I'd love to see PA and Arken put out some good competitors in 2-12 in the $300-$500 range.

    • @CDOES

      Joseph - i suggested this very scope to Arken last week via mail as i thought maybe they would be more nimble with new scope lines vs a larger co.. / 2-12, FFP, Locking / Zero Stop Turret, 20ish oz., jap glass, SPR type scope. They basically told me they were working on a LPVO (just what the market needs i guess) and said they would pass the suggestion along. Basically, "kick rocks"!

  • @p47rr

    I bought one two years ago. Fits my PTR G3 clone perfect. It’s as if it was made for this rifle. It’s short enough to clear the charging handle. The front bell is also small so again more clearance. Plus if you pair it with Vortex Pro Series high scope rings you can actually use your iron sights. (They have a cut out in the center.) The glass is excellent for the price. I spent hours and hours searching for the right scope that would fit. Your typical LPVO will work. But wanted something with a little more magnification. If you have a Cetme C308 or a PTR 91 this is the scope your looking for.

    I have to say that C_Does is one of the best reviewers of optics. He certainly took this optic through its paces. I was anxiously awaiting this review prior to making a purchasing decision for this specific scope. While I realize this is an exceptional scope, I can’t get past the fact that the reticle is off. This is like buying a ruler or measuring tape whose measurements are off. If Athlon takes pride in being an American company, then they need to go back and fix this. Otherwise they might as well put 49 stars and 12 1/2 stripes on their flag.

    Using an offset RDO, a primary scope can be used with 4x at the LOW end. If you have an RDO, there's no reason to take a LVPO or MPVO down past 3x, there is no reason to try to take MPVO's down to 1-2x. I would gladly sacrifice the low end for improvements on any part of the optic.

    @roncterry Год назад +5

    I have one of these on my 16” SPRish build. So far I am liking it quite a bit. I think my biggest gripe though is the size of the center dot in the reticle. It’s just a bit too large. Cut its diameter in half and it would be just about right. Not a deal breaker but it makes it a little more difficult when trying to make precise shots on small targets at longer distances.

    • @illestdomer2005
      @illestdomer2005 6 месяцев назад +1

      Thickness or size? Honestly, I think therein lies the “trouble” with an FFP reticle: optimize it for max zoom, and it’s useless on lowest power or vice versa.

    • @roncterry
      @roncterry 6 месяцев назад +1

      Honestly the reticle in this scope is awesome. It is only a 6x zoom so doesn’t suffer from the too small at low zoom/to large at max zoom problem like to see in 10x, and to some extent 8x, zoom range optics. The BDC/Mil tree is visible and usable starting around 4x where you actually start needing it (in fact it’s visible/usable at 2x if you want). The T style stadia lines and the larger center circle draw your eye to the center at low zoom. It’s just the center dot is 3 mil/1 MOA and covers up a lot of the center bulls eye of your target when trying to be very precise. If the center dot was the size of the dots in the mil dot tree it would be better. It’s not a deal breaker at all though because for its intended use in an SPR role where you want fast and easy target aqusition it works just fine.

I have a 16” BCM with a 13” mlok hand gaurd and enhanced light weight barrel. I’ve had the rifle over a year with just irons bc I wasn’t sure what optic I wanted to use on it. I’m hoping the elw barrel won’t prohibit me too much at longer range. We might be crazy, but it seems like a good combo to me. Save the weight on the gun for some additional weight up top. An overall handy, yet effective at varying distance rifle is what I’m hoping is in store. Wish me luck. Keep up the good work. You have great content and really do a thorough job.

    Little comment on the reticle/tracking. Maybe it's a cope. You decide. It's a 12x scope with a sorta fat center dot. Just thinking about what this could be used on, how many rifle/cartridge combos are shooting past 1k before you dial up 10 mils? Can you the shooter determine that a .2 mil difference at over 1k was your scope or would you be more likely to assume environmentals or ammo was the more likely culprit to hitting 2% high? It's not ideal but it's 500$ and probably going on guns shooting ammo in a similar price range.

    I'm trying to catch up on all your excellent reviews and comparisons of the scopes I'm interested in purchasing. Plus, your reviews are so well-done and just so interesting to watch in and of themselves!
    I started off settling on the Swampfox Arrowhead in 1-8X or 1-10X which turned me on to Swampfox as a brand. However, I really don't have the use for a true LPVO with 1x magnification even though you've said that you could view it as a MPVO. That made me lean toward the Swampfox Kentucky Long 2-12X44 as it checked all the boxes for what I needed. The turret indexing issue bothered me though and not having off stops between the illumination settings seems like an oversight. This brings me to this Athlon Helos BTR II 2-12X42 which seems to check all the boxes even harder than the Kentucky Long and apparently has none of its shortcomings. I think I even like the Helos' reticle more because it looks like it'd be more useable at lower magnification than the Kentucky's. That Arrowhead is still something special though. I think that's pretty much where you land on all of this.

    Thank you for your thorough and useful review. :) I've been thinking about getting one of these for my .30-30 lever action hunting rifle. It's precise enough with 160gr Hornady FTX projectiles pushed by LeverEvolution powder that it deserves good glass so I can take advantage of its 400yd effective range, but for whatever reason a lot of the more expensive options are lacking in some factor, in such a way that the Athlon manages to be 90% as good at everything they do while having everything I want, for a much cheaper price point. With this scope being so cheap, I can get it at an accessible price point while I save up to get the Nightforce ATACR 4-16 I want for my 18" 5.56 DMR, so I'm thinking that may be the most optimal way to spend my money for the time being.
    Now I just have to figure out if I need to use 0.9" or 1.0" height rings (Vortex Pro low and medium, respectively) for the front bell to clear the barrel. I think with the low I'll be okay, but I'm not entirely sure.

      If you’re speaking of exit pupil, it’s objective/magnification. 24/10 = 2.4. That’s pretty small and why I don’t own an lpvo greater than 6x magnification. On a 1-6x24, at 6x the exit pupil is 4mm and quite forgiving. For me I want at least 30mm objective on a scope with max 10x magnification.

    Funny you mention the Steyr Scout: I've got one myself and have been thinking long and hard about what optic to put on it. I bought a cheap Vortex long-eye-relief, variable magnification "Scout" scope when I bought the rifle just to see if I'd like it, but that thing has a featureless reticle and the FOV of a drinking straw. It's usefulness to weight ratio is also horrible and obviously that weight hanging out at the front of the gun only makes things worse.
    Anyway: I've mostly been looking at LPVOs, but it's been difficult to choose-- it seems like every optic has its shortcomings. I've been interested by the FFP Primary Arms SLx 1-6, the PLx compact 1-8, and you've had some positive reviews of a couple of SFP options as well (IIRC there was a Sig one you really liked which had been available for like $250 but is now $400-something that looked OK). I'm also keen to see what you think of the upcoming Primary Arms 5x prisms (although I think a Prism would require a creative mounting solution given the Steyr's lack of continuous rail up top). I'm curious what you'd put on your Scout if you were outfitting it in 2023? This looks like a really solid option if you can live without a 1x-- as much as I think it would be fun to work on closer-range snap-shooting with the bolt-action, having done a bit of timed/competitive, varied shooting: do you think a proper 1x is a real necessity for that kind of work, or can you make a 2x work just fine?

    If you are going to run an offset red dot, scopes in the 3-9x, 4-12x, and 3-15x, etc ranges should be in consideration. Lower multiplier should mean the full range gets better image quality for the same price point. Not that 6x is a lot to ask.
