Braveheart is packed with errors, literally from the first sentence of the opening narration, which has King Alexander III dying without living children in 1286 -- actually, he died four years later, and both his sons were alive as well; to the closing shot, which has Robert the Bruce starting the Battle of Bannockburn immediately after hearing of William Wallace's death -- which had occurred nine years before that battle. My favorite bit of nonsense in the movie has Wallace having a one-night stand with the Prince of Wales' wife, Isabella, and possibly fathering the future Edward III. In fact, the two never met -- Isabella didn't come to England until after Wallace was executed, and his one visit to France occurred when she was a baby. Moreover, Isabella was a child of eight when Wallace died, and Edward III was born seven years after Wallace's death.

That is true to most depictions of people, either books, documentaries, poems, or movies about famous people are only going to be the understanding of that person's character from the perspective of the person who is depicting him or her.

Here's one. "Glory" Robert Gould Shaw. Shaw was the son of abolitionists who commanded the 54th Massachusetts infantry, a unit of black soldiers, in the Civil War. There's a scene where Shaw, played by Matthew Broderick, orders a deserter, played by Denzel Washington, tied up and whipped. In reality the U.S. Army in the 1830's had banned whipping as a form of punishment and there were no reports of unauthorized beatings taking place, on either black or white soldiers, without the commanding officer being punished. It is certain that Shaw would never order a soldier whipped, especially a black man, but the filmmakers wanted to tie the story more closely to the outrage of slavery. Don't know if Shaw's family took any legal action.

After much reading, I believe that most shots fired were by the 5th Officer using his own pistol, a .32 Browning. There is also a mysterious gap in Lowe’s account of his activities.

Many things Debruin did were portayed as Dengler's actions. Debruin stayed behind to take care of a POW too sick to leave, this cost him his life. The RN actually had two reserves for officers, the Royal Navy Reserve was for men who had Merchant Marine tickets, and so would know navigation and ship handling. The RNVR was for everyone else. The ribbons on his uniform are for the Order of St Michael and St George, which he got for his service at the Foreign Office, the Order of the British Empire, which he got for his code breaking work previously, and the World War I victory medal.

Then it is clear, that he did not commit murder in the film rather than desperatly trying to mentain order to save lifes. And that he is remoresful for accidently bringing the death of two people makes him a tragic figure at worst but in no way do I see his reputation as ruined. He more seems to be an honorable officer, a human being who tries his best in an extreme situation. If only more could show this courage in real life like Murdoch has in the movie. :/ But I guess in real lufe it is not that simple.
