OMG - I LOVE EMMA JONES!!! I am so happy you will have her on. I love making quilts, but I've watched her channel and embraced her 'slow stitching' world as well - some nights it's where I go to unwind from the chaos of the day. Her patterns are also wonderful...I've made a full set and love them - I use them all the time. Your channel is simply WONDERFUL, Karen ~ and I hopefully everyone will watch your session with Emma and learn the peace and joy of slow stitching.

Purple thang is also a bodkin. The slit is for threading elastic through a casing. You can push corners out with the pointed end without a sharp point cutting through your fabric. I have one but actually never use it. 😉

Hello Karen. Lovely lot of answers. If on your Alaskan Cruise you are heading to Skagway a beautiful quilt shop there called “Rushin Tailor” is a must. It is one of the best quilt shops I’ve seen.
I use a wooden skewer to help with sewing on the machine. Certainly helps hold fabric down right to the end of the seam.
I’m from Sydney, Australia, and we’ve just moved into Spring 🌼 here and into our twelfth week of lockdown/curfew. I’m getting lots of sewing done and watching previous JGID videos. Thanks Karen. You’re a gem

I love my 'purple thang!" Thought I'd share how I use mine most of the time. It fits right into the loop when I use the feature to auto thread my sewing machine needle, and when pulling up thread from bobbin. Also it helps maneuver the seam on the bottom when it gets turned the wrong way while sliding toward the needle. I keep it handy and use it all the time.
Also the self-threading needles are awesome and very handy when burying threads. I had no idea that there were needles that had slits on the top until I started quilting.
Thank you, Karen, for your tips and tricks. Love your videos!

I did a twilla pink quilt for my granddaughter . The twisted sister design.. And used each sisters bodice in each square..I did the freyed edge technique on each block. And she loves it . She said it was soft and cuddy. And the freys just keep getting better and better each time it's washed. And softer.

  • @lynnroberteddy

I've been leaders and lenders while working on my 100 Days 100 Blocks squares. It helps avoid slightly uneven (non-straight) stitch lines as you start and end your seam. Also eliminates those awful thread "nests" that happen as you start a seam. But the biggest thing I've discovered is that they save thread! Who knew!?! Sewing those tiny pieces together uses lots of thread when you stop and start. I thought my bobbin would never run out. Got to Block 46 without winding a new bobbin! I use small (1 or 1.5 inch pieces) and reuse them till they are full of stitches.

Oh the slit in the purple thing is for putting ribbon or twill tape or cord in. It's excellent to use when making drawstring bags.
I made 60 for the hospital during the pandemic and you can thread the cord into the bags super quick with it!! 🙂

My hoop frame is for hand quilting and yes I would hand baste with thread or safety pins for hand quilting. Do not use spray basting for hand quilting. Unless it can hold tension on the entire width of the quilt, it needs basting.

Hi Karen, always nice to see your smiling face. In lockdown we need as many "friends " as we can get and it will be so good to be able to catchup with sewing buddies again.
As to the question about how to build your stash- well it just happens. Buy new fabrics for each new project and inevitably there will always be leftover pieces. After a few productive years, you'll wonder just how it all multiplied. 🤣🤣🤣
So jealous about your cruise, don't forget to post lots of videos.
Beautiful spring day here in Sydney.

The little purple thing ,that little slot you can use that to put through something that you're trying to feed through like for when people make masks or anything you need to feed through Ribbon or elastic the little purple thing also can aid in turning things you make and also pointing out corners when you've turned it.. I've used it and I find very handy.

Hi from Australia’s locked down east coast. I have just had a chance to watch this and loved it. Thank you very much Karen, I love your channel and I have learned so much since I subscribed a few months ago. Especially about colour I should add. I have made up a folder which includes my colour wheel and can’t wait to show my son and his wife. They are designers and don’t need it; I just want to impress them. 😊
My other son and his wife gave me a beautiful piece of fabric screen printed by an Australian First Nations woman a few years ago and I couldn’t bear to cut it so used it as a centre panel for a King Size quilt for our bed. One of the borders is a 1” checkerboard (so cut 1.5”) and I pressed all the seams to one side. The small squares nestled beautifully and it simply adds a bit of texture to this border.

What block is that block behind you. I like that. Thank you for sharing. Is there a tool to help thread your sewingmachine needle, I have automatic but it won't work and numb hands and hard to see is so hard for me. Ugh I see you answered about the quilt behind you.

Also if you sew through the purple thang it won’t damage your machine or break your needle

The one time to be sure and purchase a bit more fabric than you think you might need is when you are high end fabric shopping in India. If you think you might like a piece of clothing made up when you get home, be sure to order more than you are advised. There’s no going back for more!!!

Always clear and informative and good tips
You are so right about not buying fabrics in too large quantities
Did you make videos when you went to MSQC?
Would love to see if you did

The slot in the purple thang is to thread elastic through to pull elastic through a narrow channel

My stash grows from impulse buying fabric remnants where I work.🙃 Right now discontinued fabric is 70% off and I want to buy so much

@@JustGetitDoneQuilts guess I’m more of a buyer/hoarder than a doer lol. I did make 20 pillowcases with a different colored cuff for a school service project. I usually ask people what they make when I cut their fabric at work and once a customer said “I’ll figure something out or else it’ll go in my estate sale”

I have a hard time sewing down binding with 2 threads, they are hard to hide. I’ve tried the thread conditioner and that hasn’t worked either. Any advice?

Does anyone know what the basting powder is made of? It doesn’t say on the listings online. I also checked the website, I’m having a hard time finding the ingredients. Love listening to the q&a’s! 💜
