Picked up a couple & couldn’t wait to try them. It was windy Sunday, so instead of going anywhere, I tossed it around my neighborhood pond for 30 mins or so when I picked up a 2 pounder. Stuck with it a bit longer and pulled out a 6 pounder: best one I’ve had all year🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m sold now. It reminds me of a little rodent swimming with its head sticking out of the water. The bass seemed to like it when I was changing up the speed. Hope this helps! (Oh yeah… Central Illinois & has been below freezing most nights)

I saw Miles talking about those a few month back. It reminds me of a cross between a chatterbait and an old Cotton Cordell Boy Howdy. The type with the weighted back end and not the one with the props. Our water is still well over 70 and the topwater bite is is very much on. And you know I'm buying all the colors. The universe dictates it must be so!

I predicted cell phones like we have more or less as a kid in the 70s because of Star Trek communicators and because dad's cop cars had mobile computers in the 80s. It was obvious that a phone, tv and computer would be combined. I thought they'd be tablet size.

I think it could be really good in pressured water where the fish have seen everything. Otherwise, it seems like a plopper or a smaller buzzbait would do the trick. The buzzbait has the advantage of coming through cover well and the Plopper floats so you can vary the retrieve. Personally not something I'll use, but I can definitely see the use in this bait for people who fish pressured water

Hey Matt, I’ve had a few of the Hellraisers for about a month and I had the same reaction and wonderment ,but I love it. I’m not sure what are the best conditions, but I tried it last week in a club tournament and after 50 casts and no bites I changed techniques, but I still feel like it’s fun to throw and I need more time with various conditions. I did have a backlash, and while getting it out the bait sank quickly and I felt lucky to get it back and it was covered in spinach 😂 I love your authentic reaction and surprise and delight when you first tried it out, I felt the same way 🍀🎣🍀💯

I don't like lures that torpedo into the depths upon casting, they tend to grab weeds too much. In weedy condition the best topwater is a wide body wake like the yo-zuri 3DS or kvd HC, those two you can land in a 6" hole in weeds with 8 inches of water below them and they won't turn into an anchor.

Matt if u check out the jackall riser 009 bait its a very similar concept but. Instead of having the chatterbait style blade on the rear its actually molded on the face or front of the bait and doesn't move it also has a prop and intake mouth. Thats similar to the popmax and with the combination of those three features makes the exact same noise as the z-man hellraizer and it even sinks like the hellraizer its a very interesting bait and wonder if z-man or whoever helped design it has used this bait before.

I was coming off the lake the other day and happen to talk to a fellow fisherman at the boat ramp, and we were talking about using top waters, and I’ve been catching mine off whopper ploppers . And so he proceeded to tell me about a fishing trip two days before that and was telling me he was catching them on top waters, and he decided to use this new Topwater. He had gotten an happened to throw this new bait beside to lay down log and he ended up catching a seven and three-quarter pound bass on it. I said well if you don’t mind me asking what kind of new top water are we talking about? He told me hell raiser I said what in the hell is a hell raiser so we walk over to his boat he pulls one out and it was the weirdest looking Bait I have ever seen, but after hearing how it walks on the water, and I had to have one . So when he had caught this fish, the water temps were running about 67 to 72° and this was in northeast Texas lake of the pines. So I got mine this week from my local tackle supplier and I am anxious to try it out this weekend.

I wonder how it would behave if the weight was removed? Obviously it would float better and be even more of a top water bait. Now that I think about it, because it does sink it can also be used as a mid-depth bait. You probably could also get some good action if you pop it like a jerk bait.

    • @MattStefanFishing

i dont think youd get the action without the weight...but only one way to find out

I've fished it for a few months and have had decent results but back hook isn't durable because decent fish have pulled it out of the body. Won't use it in tournaments for that reason.

I haven't purchased any yet but most likely will. Unique baits are entertaining at least and you never know. I fished the upper Potomac today with topwater, buzzbait, poppers, Vixen, propwalker and wake bull and I Jack. Not one bite. Water is clear but temperature ranges from 56 to 63 degrees. Floating eel grass makes topwater fishing tough. Maybe it's time to put them away. Sucks.

I don't know about this 1, I really hate spending more then 7 dollars on a lure, I used to complain that hardbaits were like 4.79 30years ago, now seems like most are at least 7.00. That said 15.00 is just a lot for a bait. I may break down and buy one, after I see some videos with people catching larger bass on it, but yeah it's hard for me to spend 15 or more on a lure that's not a large fancy swim bait. I have a lot of lures I bought 25-30 years ago and am glad I bought them when the price was about five bucks.... jimi
