  • Mark Sisson sits down with his co-author Brad Kearns to discuss the topic of metabolic efficiency and why he thinks he doesn't eat all that much for someone of his size and activity level.
    In Mark's recent "What I Eat In A Day" video, many people commented on how little Mark actually eats in a day. This video is a bit of a followup and addresses why he thinks that is.

    I do 20/4 IF and have never felt better. I don't tell most people because they look at you like your crazy. I exercise early and don't eat till 12-1pm. I think the body thrives on this system. I sleep better, my menopausal hot sweats have all but disappeared and I have no aches or pains. Life is good thanks to people like you guys👍❤

      20/4 or 22/2 is my preferred fasting schedule as well. I love it, I’m never going back.

      so 20/4 would be 2 meals ? What time do you eat ? 12 pm and 4 pm for eg

    I often spend hours a day watching videos on paleo-primal-keto-carnivore subjects ... and then I come here and get ONE 10 minute video with Brad and/or Mark that changes my life.
    I am intrigued by the 'closed loop' body system that you have begun to talk about lately and would love to hear much more about it.

    Wow, you can really tell he has learned so much from years of trial and error, and is speaking from experience. What he talks about makes so much sense, as I reflect it it my own experiences and struggles. I so appreciate and am inspired by this man

    I lost 20 lbs in 8 weeks. I am now 13.5lbs away from my goal, healed my gut of colitis and borderline Crohn’s. I have always had some kind IBS even as a child. My liver enzymes have come down after yo-yoing in my blood work. THANK YOU MARK SISSON. you saved me from a 700$ medication a month med to suppress my immune system. There is always hope you guys.

    I can’t think Mark enough for sharing his knowledge. I’ve been following his advice for sometime now and I feel better now than I have in many many years. Also at age 49 I’m looking pretty damn good thanks Mark!

      I' the exact same age, found this channel 3 weeks ago, dropped 10#s from 196 to 186, on the way back to the weight I lived at for most of my life, 155-163, eating 2 meals a day, and on the way back to the athlete I always was.

    I have been on a low calorie diet for the past year and eating pretty much a similar diet to what you explain in your video. During this time I lost a lot of weight and body fat feel great However, I have been told that living on a low calorie intake is bad for your metabolism and I have been concerned that I am doing damage to myself. After watching this video I am happy that I can continue on the same path without fear and the whole "closed loop" makes sense. Thank you Mark and Brad for this video.

    🌺 So incredibly true. I could not lose an extra 20 pounds for 10 years that had accumulated.
    I now IF and have 2 low carb nutritionally dense meals and I am losing weight, have tons of energy and I’m enjoying my food. Love this way of eating.

    62 years old here, I discovered keto about 16 years ago from my then doctor Cate Shanahan when she was a physician here in New Hampshire. About a month ago I added in time restricted feeding IF with a strict 3 meals a day, no snacking. I'm 135 lbs, 5'11 small boned. I exercise every day 30 to 45 minutes of calisthenics or power yoga, plus time on my bicycle (with a trainer attached for foul weather). Breakfast is always three free range eggs over easy with about 2 oz. hard Italian cheese, then lunch is 3 slices of Swiss cheese and 2 slices of Turkey with Primal Kitchen mayo and maybe a small serving of fermented sauerkraut. Dinner will be some kind of meat like burger, steak, chicken, fish, or other seafood, some kind of green vegetable or salad. The salad gets the Primal Kitchen Caesar. A couple oz. of 90% dark chocolate to finish dinner off. A few times a week I will have a glass or 2 of wine at dinner, or 1 beer. 20 to 30 grams of carbs total for the day. I push those carbs to only dinner time so I have only 1 insulin event each day. This keeps my energy level high and constant throughout the day, and my mood very calm and stable.

      Have you tracked your cholesterol throughout this phase? I've done keto a few times and my doc thinks my cholesterol is high due to this...

      @@stephenpatterson2204 no i haven't because I wouldn't change anything. The lipid theory of cardiovascular disease has been thoroughly debunked. It is sugar/carbohydrates tyat scar your arteries and cause problems.

      ​@@stephenpatterson2204cholesterol goes up even if you eat nothing.. it goes up if you're losing fat. Cholesterol level changing isn't an indicator of health. If you look and feel healthier, you are healthier.

    This video right here, folks. This is how it's done. There are countless videos on RUclips describing keto, weight loss, etc., but this one sums up the winning strategy perfectly. I lost 100 pounds long before I even discovered Mark Sisson or this video, but I'm here to say that this clip perfectly describes what worked for me. As Mark said, it's about being able to "access stored body fat on a regular basis." He hit the nail on the head at the 4:14 mark. I think it's inaccurate to call keto a "high fat" diet because that seems to imply the necessity of eating a lot of fat. Rather, it's a lifestyle of adequate protein to maintain muscle mass, and adequate good fats to feel satisfied. It's "high fat" only in the sense that you are eating more fat than protein. And you can have some low-glycemic vegetables if you'd like, and a little bit of low-glycemic fruit as well (i.e. berries). When you do all this, you end up with a ~2000 calorie lifestyle, low levels of glycogen and glucose, and a body ready to tap into fat every day. You can go from being fat, to being skinny fat. Then if you tweak this lifestyle a little bit and start lifting weights, I think you can get on a path to looking like the bodybuilders of the 50s, 60s and 70s (muscular and lean). I would think this would require more protein, lifting weights, and possibly replenishing the glycogen storage before a workout, while keeping everything else the same. Any thoughts?

      It doesn't matter if you eat high fat or high carb diet. As long you are in a calorie deficit. Body can not store a negative energy balance at the end of the day.

    I definitely have to pay attention to calories on OMAD ketovore in combination with regular exercise. If I don't eat massive amounts of calories from fatty foods, I'll lose too much weight and my energy will tank. This doesn't involve counting calories but stuffing as many into my mouth as possible. Of course, I also do some occasional fasting, including extended.
    As is common among many hunter-gatherers, I follow a feast and fast pattern. I had to expand the feasting side a bit because I couldn't fit in enough calories if my feeding window was too narrow. So, my OMAD is typically 3-4 hours, during which I eat multiple times. I also eat freely on weekends when my exercise routine is more intensive.

    Turned strict carnivore 4 months ago for health and weight loss reasons and it's exceeded expectations so far in several areas including weight loss, mental clarity, energy level, carb addiction control, and most importantly what it has taught me about WHY I eat. I got the Audible version of "2 meals a day" yesterday and really enjoyed the first hour or so I heard. I do want to be able to include some non meat things here and there, because I am doing this to have more quality time with my family, and for better or worse, we live in a culture centered around eating. I'm not going to exclude myself from the celebrations I did all this to be around for by missing out on things like having a drink with my daughter on her upcoming 21st b-day, or future wedding, or one of my wife's prize winning choc chip cookies once or twice a year with my girls while just watching a movie at home. Quality of life and food are important. For me it really boils down to treating processed foods and sugar like what they are - Very tasty poison. Eat a little, very infrequently, and most will be just fine. Make it a lifestyle choice - and you will get metabolic disease. Fortunately for most, if we stay at it, and are diligent and purposeful, we will feel better and get metabolically healthy and live long and prosper.

    I tried 2 months of no carbs. I started to lose weight, but I couldn't function. The gut aches I had made me want to double over in pain, and I had to give it up. People kept saying it would eventually go away, but it didn't. Going to have to try and meet the plan half-way I think with some healthy carbs.

      I'm about 65. Have put on 6lbs doing keto'ish with BFR training (blood flow restriction) over past 12 months. 1600-2400 calories at 145lbs now. Plenty of muscle definition tho not quite like his abs. Can pick up my 6yr old boy about as easily as when he was 3. This is 1st time I've heard such a theory. I'll try it out with a bit of rigor and see what happens.

    I was just talking about this earlier at the gym!!! I can’t understand how I can push my body everyday running 5miles, boxing, S&C, 35-45 in the sauna & not be super hungry. Yesterday I wasn’t very hungry. I don’t eat usually until 2-3pm. I train fasted always have. Maybe my body is using food from the last day or so?? Because at some point in the week I will totally smash food. But sometimes I’m shocked with how little food I need. Assuming I need to eat more considering the training. I do focus on a balance of protein & fats & carbs. I love broccoli & kale. Idk maybe I’m metabolically flexible!!!

      @@tndgu both are fine, I do supplement my body with electrolytes through out the day. D3, Greens powder, magnesium at night & I’ll randomly take a sleep supplement if I need it. As long as I sleep well my CNS should be fine & libido & stress levels are good.

      Sounds reasonable to me. Physionic does a video on how basal metabolic rate can drop with exercise so that total calories burnt don't equal the exercise plus the base without exercise. You sound healthy to me.

      Your body is burning fat via gluconeogenesis. Training fasted improves fat metabolism, i.e., how much energy / glucose you can generate from fat per time.

    Interesting in that in recent interviews / podcasts, Mark has been more apt to mention calories then he has in the past. Although it has been proven that our bodies treat calories differently depending on their source, I think the old adage if you are eating KETO, you don't have to worry about the amount of calories your are consuming is falling by the way side. Both quantity and source play a part in weight management and health.

      Oh I can pack on the weight eating any form of low carb just as easily, perhaps even more so, than higher carb. Never in the last 25 of my 60 years have I eaten good food and just get away with eating till my heart’s content. During my first 35, staying trim was purely magic. Now it takes food awareness and sometimes begrudging activity. My hats off to those over 40 that can maintain there weight eating till there hearts content. I don’t believe most of you. I think you’re often fooling even yourself.

    Recently started doing this. Stopped trying to eat bunch of protein for muscle and stress out about calories. Just eating really good food in a comfortable quantity at strategic times.

      IF is great for this. I've been doing it for 5 months, lost 15 kg and fully metabolically flexible. I never feel hungry anymore. I generally fast 18-20 hours per day. Sometimes less, sometimes more.

      ​@@andraslibal You don't need to rush. Give your body time to adapt. It's completely okay to start with 12 hours of fasting per day and then slowly extend it over the weeks/months. Whatever feels comfortable for you. Of course you will be a bit out of your comfort zone whenever you try to go further than before, but it's only a matter of adaptation for your body. After 2 months of intermittent fasting my body was completely adapted to OMAD and 2MAD, but I noticed that I dont really need to fast 20-24 hours and eat only one meal per day. I was losing weight faster by eating between 12-18 pm, so thats what I've been doing last 2 months. I generally eat 2 full BIG meals. One at 12 pm and one around 6 pm. At 3 pm I drink a coffee and some snack just for the enjoyment of eating something good. Half of the time I skip eating at 3 pm and just drink a black coffee. I'm also not strict with the time. It's +/- 1 hour when I eat my 2 meals. During weekend I switch it up and eat whenever and usually breakfast as well. I've noticed that this boosts my metabolism and I lose a bit of extra weight. It's also nice to eat breakfast with the family :). Good luck!

    Very interesting to incorporate the biopsychosocial model in direct relationship to our society of “hungry ghosts”, as Dr. Gabor Maté defines.
    Underneath the disconnection in ourselves and the pain.
    Food can be a way to self-soothe.

    It's interesting to recognize the structural importance of protein for body functions, but deny the importance of glucose. The brain, nervous system, bodily mucosal lining all require carbs. Yes, gluconeogenesis is possible.. but not advisable for all glucose needs.

    There's also a highly overlooked factor - sleep. Unless you are sleeping 8 hours of quality sleep, all of the lifting and starvation will be for nothing

    Um…what if I just like to eat? (Not junk food etc) vegetables, seafood, Mediterranean style, food tastes good I just like to eat 😅
    People’s desire to eat is not gonna change so thinking “what’s the least amount I can get away with” is very difficult in most of people. But thanks for showing us your insight :)

    To put into perspective how old Mark is, he was born in July of 1953. That means he could have driven a car to Woodstock at age 16. Picture that. Picture passing a legal driver headed to Woodstock back in the 60's, and in 2022 if you passed the same guy, he's got 6 pack abs and could probably destroy 95% of college boys in a workout tomorrow morning. Yea...I'll listen to his dietary advice lol.

    I have a problem i'm around 3-4% body fat so i dont have a lot of stored fat is eating 3 times a day enough? Also i get realy hungry from time to time like crazy hungry and i dont eat over 100g of carbs. (I bodybuild 5 times a week) any advice ?

    I have a microbiome theory of obesity.
    The more complex carbohydrates you eat, the more you feed species like klebsiella pneumoniae and rumminococcus gnavus - which convert tryptophan and phenylalanine into serotonin and dopamine. These bacteria keep you addicted to food to ensure you are constantly feeding them, but keeping you inflamed and depressed.

    At the end of your excellent Sprint video, you list sprinting in addition to weightlifting 2 days per week & low-level cardio two days per week, like the sprinting is its own separate day. So by "sprinting" do you mean one 50 yard dash & go home? Or do you mean a sprinting routine? For example: Ten 1-minute sprints with 30-seconds of resting in between sprints?

      Sounds like HIIT. I've always hated running, long hikes. Turns out I had severe A-fib/flutter (both). HIIT--windsprints, esp. hills; horsing a bike up a path or w/ weights--has always worked to keep me buff..

    Great video. My question though is this: I'm a 45 year old man, 63 in about 230 lb. I bulked up to that weight from 215 and I'm starting to cut back. The last time I did a keto diet I lost way too much weight and muscle. So the question is how much protein should I be eating should still be the 200 grams or so a day while I'm still lifting 3 or 4 days a week and just put that into the 18:6 fast.

    I've been doing 2 meals max per day for over 3 years now. I'll eat before work and might eat after before bed, but I NEVER intake any calories while at work.

    Agree 100%. To be able to eat like he says without crazy hunger or fatigue you first have to become a bonafide fat adapted fat burner. Only way to do this is get your insulin levels down into a truly normal range. High insulin levels caused by crappy processed food full of sugar and junk carbs block fat burning. Thats why a fat or TOFI person is always so hungry. Their insulin levels are sky high. And of course they are headed for diabetes.

    I have had great weight-loss experience from following the Primal diet and lifestyle (Aerobic-only workouts, lifting etc). However, once the weight is off, I have never been able to support a high intensity training lifestyle on this diet. In this video Mark describes 1700 intake kCal day which includes a workout, assuming the workout is 500 - 700Kcal, that leaves a net 1000-1200 Kcal...which for him is sustainable but by established nutritional science is classified as deficient (unless you weigh 100lbs) and likely results in the bodies "starvation" response. My question is, if I want to train with intensity for 2-3+ hours a day, including very high intensity efforts and racing (2000+ kCal of work, measured on my power-meter) how do I adjust my "macros"? My experience has been that as soon as I eat carbs to fuel intensity I lose the primal benefits, is it as simple as increasing the intake by 2000kcal of fat / protein?

    Individuals figuring out the amount of food they really NEED and eating that amount is a very good responsible thing to do for the energy efficiency and functioning of the whole society. On multiple levels; you don't use too much resources and you function better, calmer, smarter, more inspired, more creative when you are not overburdening your body with excess food.

    I found a simple way of staying within 2k calories per day - just eat half of my every meal. I also exercise 2 hr a day, 6 days a week. Works well so far, and I don’t need to count any calories. And a few more rules - I don’t eat too much calories after 6pm, and make sure I get at least 8 hours of sleep every day. We build muscles and lose weight only during sleep time, so without prosper sleep all other efforts will be pretty much waisted.

    Hey, Mark I’m a fan of you thoughts. I love the framing of “primal” to instruct a healthy life style. I wonder what you perspective is on insect nutrition. I grind and ingest about 40g of dried mealworms daily. They have a great nutrient profile. What are your thoughts in regard to this primal ingredient to one’s diet?

      Don't worry about cholesterol. it is a myth.

    If Mark does a fasted workout in the morning, when would he then eat? Should you always eat straight after a morning workout of body weight HIIT training?

      Not necessarily, I workout first thing in the morning, and only usually eat one meal a day in the evening. I found this tough at first, because the body tends to cry out for something after a workout, but, like most things, the body adapts and after a while you get used to it. The alternative is to time the workout so it is just before you eat.

    So, why do I keep hearing I need to eat at least 1 gram of protein for each pound of lean body weight (age 66) to avoid sarcopenia? I’ll add that with two meals a day, I have found this impossible to do.

      I agree. I am scratching my head and can’t find the answer other than protein supplements, which I don’t want to take. So will just eat everything in moderation and will see what happens.

    He's talking calories, but what I like about Carnivore is I don't think about calories. I eat meat, butter, eggs, salt, and take Magnesium. That is my basic.
    I also drink coffee.
    The only time I think about calories is when I eat something that is not Carnivore and then think about carbs and sometimes calories.

      50-60 grams of protein is 200-300 grams of meat. Even though that steak in the previous video looked more than 300 grams - and he builds muscle so needs more than the ave person

      Well, I'll start w/ what he gets right. HFLC, Keto, Carnivore or any diet under the meat-based low carb umbrella to not meaningfully engage The Randle Cycle is a proper human diet.
      What he's getting wrong is counting calories, CICO, or believing in calories at all really. Calories are not a proper measure of food energy. Calories are a measurement of heat. Thermodynamics doesn't apply in a meaningful way. We break down food chemically, not via heat. Thermodynamics is more for isolated &/or closed systems to begin with. We are open systems, the furthest away from what thermodynamics is used for even if we used heat as energy... which we don't.

      Missing the point, it’s about WHAT he’s eating. It’s totally satisfying. He’s actually rocking it. 1700 calls per day can make you feel comfortably full. IF, two meals a day, feel better than I have EVER.

    I’m going to have to disagree with you about consuming carbs? Can you over-consume carbs, most certainly?
    Can you under consume carbs while remaining active, and under perform, absolutely!!
    Your brain alone needs 750 grams of carbs per day to get through pertinent decision making!
    The ketogenic diet, and acetyl-coA is not substrate to exist 24/7?
    Proper ‘smart carb” management is sustainable for the lean, optimal performing, and sustainable health !

    Come on man it’s not complicated or miserable. Yes for me your diet would be miserable besides the steak and wine however I do not drink during the week.
    A healthy 170-200Lb man who works out regularly including true cardio should:
    •Eat a well balanced diet which includes carbs (33/33/33%) at 2,250-2,750 calories per day. If you want to lose weight drop it down to 1,500-1,750. No added sugars & no binging on garbage.
    Usually I start with a very light breakfast of about 300 calories, then either 60 minutes of hard calisthenics or 30 minutes of burpees for cardio (sometimes both back to back), 5 days per week. No weights, just a pull up bar some chairs whatever is around and dozens of different exercises. About an hour later I’ll have a 500-600 calorie lunch. Then I’ll wait as long as possible to start eating again. For dinner I usually eat very late, maybe 2 hours before bed and I go for mostly protein and fat but also include vegetables and yes even fruit (god forbid).
    That’s it, people over complicate everything.
    Btw I won’t deny that you look great and very healthy.

    I admire him but I challenge this gentleman to come to live in Tottenham London UK, dump the fortune, sunshine weather, live on a UK pension for a year and 'then' try to convince us millions outside his reality perception & demographic to be as he is over 60. His 'good where he lives' advice is physically impractical in the UK so I wish RUclips had a 'relevance' filter to narrow down channels so they are nationally, culturally and socially organised to be not such a mishmash of everything the USA pushes out to us 'elsewhere' of the USA; but hey RUclips is the USA, so maybe I should shut up and create 'UKTube' and a channel 'health for older people who live with 2 months of sun a year near Russia?' 😂
