I think that DayZ is one of the best games to create stories in. There can be some real organic moments, especially when you have a stand off or a team up with strangers. The point of the game is not to ‘just survive’. You’re pretty much going to die. It’s the story you can make with that particular life/run.
4k hours on PC. Fair review. Not made for console. PC is so much better because of mods which leads to choices of game play. So many variations of the game on pc.
Damn that's a lot of hours! Thanks for your comment and for watching, I can see why people get stuck into this game as there is a lot of depth to it, once you get past the initial struggles. Cheers
Spot on review! Although the coop gameplay in DayZ could be packed with thrilling action, it is too much of a time sink. I enjoyed the lonely survivor gameplay much more (mainly on hardcore servers) and then visiting various parts of the map (w/o building any base or going for best military gear). That way you can play the game more casually and truly enjoy it. Btw, people on vanilla servers are just too toxic indeed. Fortunately, there are some good servers with dedicated and mature admins, like on IntenZ server for example.
I believe DayZ is a game that truly captures the horror of the unknown. Think about it. You never know when you'll find your next meal. You never know when you'll find your next set of repaired clothing to keep you warm. You never know when the next rainstorm will come and cause hypothermia when you're outside. You never know if your gunshots have attracted the attention of far away zombies, or worse, other players. You never know if there's a player nearby. You never know if a player has seen you from a distance and is hunting you. You never know if the next player will be friendly or not. You never know if a player will snipe you when you're vulnerable in a field. You never know if a "friendly" player will betray you at some point. You never know if you will have to end up betraying a future friend for your own survival. You never know if a killed player has friends waiting for you nearby. I'm always on edge when I'm playing DayZ. My only moments of relaxation are when I successfully make it back to the main menu. But even then when I load back into the game, I never know if there will be players nearby.
That's a fair review for the casual gamer. You're right about the game appealing to the hardcore survival crowd. I fit into that group, and DayZ is my favorite game and has been for years. There's so many ways to play the game once you get the mechanics figured out. Like I said, for the casual gamer, you are correct, 6/10 is a fair score.... but for the hardcore survivalist definitely a 10/10.... because there is nothing out there that can match its level of difficulty.
You get actual enjoyment and pleasures in real life: Ice cream, gourmet food, pets, comfort, forming relationships, watch movies, listen to music, indulge in your hobbies, find new passions, etc. Life is literally full of endless possibilities. This game isn't. If at the end all you are doing is barely surviving against zombies and other hostile players and you are still stuck on the island, what exactly is the point?
@Banned4life88 exactly. It’s about the experience and the interactions. I clapped 3 fully armed guys and stole their precious car while their friends shot at me as I drove away after they had robbed me the day before. I can’t remember a rush like that. Maybe my first time being the last guy in a battle royale… even that wasn’t that intense.
@@devilhunterred cuz if/when the shit hits the fan and society crumbles. It’ll probably be a lot like day z. When you kill 1 other player and take his shit it’s a greater rush that killing a 100 in a normal game.
@@tymacdougall3140 If/when shit hits the fan and society crumbles, it'll most likely be NOTHING like Day Z. Day Z doesn't simulate what it's actually feel like to get shot. Getting shot isn't even the worst part (depends where), the worst part is learning how to dig the bullet out from your own bloody wound. In Day Z you don't need to learn how to make a tourniquet when you get stabbed, how to make a splinter if you break bones in a fall or trip, Day Z doesn't simulate constantly looking for antibiotics, the nauseating diarrheas you'll constantly get from food poisoning in a world where no food will be fresh, the demoralizing nightmare of constantly eating the same shitty canned food and you know you'll never dine out in your favorite restaurant again. Day Z doesn't simulate the misery of being frozen to the bones and thoroughly wet from torrential downpour. Any outdoorsman will tell you Day Z isn't even remotely close to survival simulator. And let's be honest. In real life if you shoot a guy trying to loot him, he'll most likely have half a dozen buddies shooting you back. In Day Z most people are either solo or in small groups. In a real post-apocalyptic world, majority of people will band to form small communities and tribes.
Dayz is thrilling, boring, gruelling, serene, hilarious and unbelievably dark. It will not hold your hand in any way. If you can get through the initial pain threshold you are in for one hell of an experience. This is the SAS of survival simulators.
I've played DayZ when it first came out, kinda like that Doom Review comment I made last month waiting for a heart. And DayZ is a tough game to play - Can be lots of fun if You play on the Role Play Servers.
This is a whole different animal on PC. Not just because of the controls. But the game is one of the nicest graphically to look at on PC when it's maxed out and set to either 1440p or 4K. I've actually been killed a few times over the years just because I stopped somewhere to take screenshots of the landscape. I have played it on Xbox also and it's functional at best.
I agree about the UI being difficult on console. But i like the fact that the game doesn't explain things very well abs you just have to figure it out. It's always fun when you team up with a rando and they teach you something new. The things that really keeps me coming back to this game is the sense of adventure, the challenge, the tension, and the absolute adrenaline pumping moments when gunfights break out.
Yeah I agree part of the experience is trying to figure it out while you're being attacked from all sides. I do think the UI in many of these sorts of games gets created early in the development stage of a game, then the devs get used to it and think it's fine but it could be improved in that department no doubt. Cheers.
Thanks for this review. I may be a PC gamer, but almost all your criticisms pertain to PC players too. Definitely not how I want to spend $45. Thanks again!
I really wanted to like this game. I keep giving it a try but the UI (for consoles) is so bad. Its lack of intuitiveness makes for frustrating play. And I agree with all the survival trackers you need to watch. But when you couple that with the insane lack of loot and lack of story, I just can’t enjoy playing DayZ
Same happened to me way back but this time I gave it some more time, still needs work but I like the premise, just needs polishing. Thanks for watching.
I bought this like 7 years ago and decided to play it since they wouldn’t let me refund it anyway. I actually quite enjoyed going on an empty server and just walking around. Ironically, I would meet people here and there and we would kinda travel together for some time. It was a weird and enjoyable experience as a whole, so maybe give it another go and see what happens.
A wise choice once you get good ans build a base to store your gear it will get raided and destoryed so its basicly just a waste of time you cant store loot
Great review as usual. I know you love the Souls games and they require a lot of internet research for most folks (me included). How do you think the tutorials in DayZ compare to what Souls games offer?
Thanks for your appreciation. Well in Dark Souls you at least get a short section at the start that tells you what each button or attack does. DayZ doesn't have that, once you land on the map you're on your own. The main menu has some stills that give you a brief idea but tbh they aren't very good. RUclips guides are the best bet, watch two or three and you'll get a decent grounding and be more likely to not pull your hair out at the start. Cheers
@@PlayGames_PG I mean, you can use mouse and controller comfortably 😂. My point was re the controls, it’s exactly the same as playing on PC in that regard.
Is this game friendly to solo players or 2 players? I feel like groups of 5+ will just run the server and kill everyone not in a group, I don't stand a chance. Hopefully I am wrong.
Well the map is large so you'll often play and not see anyone is you stay away from the towns. Solo or two is fine, just be prepared as it is a harsh game to survive in. Thanks for watching.

This games so ugly, the controls are wack. The ui is ugly, The landscape and textures are ugly on extreme, I played for 30 mins, uninstalled and got a refund. Not worth paying for. You have to be a kid or be bored out of your mind to even consider playing this.
It isn't a game for immediate gratification, slow burner and I agree with some of those issues, but I can also see why it has a hardcore following as after a while it does become interesting. Cheers
