  • Eleanor Fairbraida’s seemingly idyllic life in the Yorkshire Dales took a shocking turn when she discovered her close friend and lover of seven years, Mark Stone, a committed environmental activist, was an undercover police officer sent to spy on her. And worse still, Mark, real name Mark Kennedy was a married officer, with three children. As a new podcast, Undercover: The Spycops about the ongoing public enquiry into this case comes to light, Podcast maker Andy Whittaker joins Eleanor on the sofa.

      @sevensongs 2 месяца назад +51

      It happens all the time. I know of someone who pretended to be best friends with someone just to ultimately lure them into an illegal weapons trade off and arrest them. He got to know the entire family. My personal belief is it's entrapment and those people should not be charged with the crimes they are then charged with because they are being groomed into the behavior. But entrapment is very hard to prove and not helpful as a defense most of the time.
      Edit to note: The man pretended to be the "best friend" for three years. That doesn't count the time it took to BECOME the best friend.

    I can understand befriending members of the group, but to become a romantic partner for several years? That's cruel. There's no other way to put it. Not only are you pulling at this person's deepest emotions, you're stealing from them as well. The subject could have spent those years fostering real relationships, real love. By the way, who paid for the wedding? And what were the police gaining from all of this? Seven years and apparently nothing. At some point you've got to call it quits.
    This is really unbelievable. International spies do stuff like that. That's cruel too, but at least they're not being cruel to their own citizens.

      They were trained to look like activists. So they grew their hair and got tatts ON PURPOSE. The members of these special police units were almost always recruited from people with right wing views and beliefs. They were screened for that so they did not develop sympathy with the people they were surveilling.
