    The price for the weathering decals is just stupid. it seems like such an easy thing to airbrush if i decide i want that (probably not). I skipped those. The photoetch set doesnt really seem necessary either. i just got the main model and the lighting set. i paid 266 dollars including shipping (labor day coupon) for the model and the lighting kit. Expensive but it was a great deal compared to the typical price. i dont think i would have actually bought it at the regular price.
    also, the lighting kit i got is a supposedly "updated and improved" version. at least thats what the front of the box says.

      Yes, unfortunately everything is expensive. In my opinion, over priced. Best of luck with your build.

    First
    I have the 1701 / A first release
    The kit has Both parts for the upgrade and the A variant
    It DOESN'T have the Aztec decals but a template to use .
    You will have to make several copies to complete the painting .
    Also there's two ways to paint the trim
    First style the ship is trimmed in Duck egg blue around the forward scanner and other areas
    The 1701 A has the same Aztec paint job but the afore mentioned trim is in Engineer green according to the instructions
    All other decals are for the Standard markings and an A to add to the registry numbers
    Again there's NO Aztec decals
    I also have the NX - 01
    Captain Jonathan Archer's ship
    And a light set from VooDoo FX
    Also first issue release
    With this lightning kit there's a lot of soldering to the Pre-Assembly
    This kit also has the Aztec painting templates that you also have to make several copies of
    And finally I just acquired the NCC -1701 original series All Ships Plastics are translucent you need to primer the inside before you put any lighting kits on the 1701 refit I had to use several bottles of dark Panzer Grey from testers once I completed that then I gave a coat of testors flat white throughout the inside of all the ship parts I also had to do the same thing to the interior of the NX-01
    When you are working on the original series NCC-1701 from 1966 you will also find it this plastic is also translucent light will bleed through it making it look like it's Radioactive .

    I had got the original light set when it came out. And I believe it was 150 bucks. I think it's a shame they now sell the same set without the extras for 250. Also the only way to get the clear parts for the nacelles, rear fan tail, cooler grills is to buy their crappy kit. Several of the strip lights dated flickering and burnt out after testing before gluing. I'm now building another one and going to turn my first one into a mirror universe(2nd pilot) enterprise. I bought better more quiet motors, strip lighting that is far superior, And the tenacontrols strobe/ nav kit and still comes in less than the polar lights kit.
    They didn't make a light kit for the refit because the refit requires heavy modification to light. That is not for the faint of heart. And that refit kit still comes with the parts to make the A. I'm actually building another one because I don't line all the mistakes on the first one. And while I have it fresh in mind I'm gonna build another on re

      I agree, they are very expensive. I have gotten different motors and lights for one of my 1:350 scale U.S.S. Enterprise Models as well. In fact, I am thinking of making one and showing how to make your own lighting kit which would be much more affordable. And yes, Tenecontrols has made some really great boards. I am using them for my 1:350 Refit Build. Best of luck with your builds my friend.

    • @davidward9487

      @@TrekFanNCC-1701 I was thinking the same thing. I get they need to make money and not everyone NEEDS ALL the extras. However to have the clear parts to do lighting and hold them back for their kit which several strips are flickering or burning out is total bs in my book. And then to charge almost 100 bucks with shipping to get the Aztec decals that they used to include with the kit........ idk I like the old days where you bought a kit and it came with everything but paint. I may replace the motors and leds in my first kit and try to fish some light strips through the secondary hull and neck. Then just get another kit for the ISS enterprise which I like the HD version. They combined elements from the second pilot and production version. Best if luck with your refit. Which board did you get for it? I bought the combo NCL. Then credited to get the photon torpedo effect. This next refit will be with the mega complete board! I already sat down with the schematics and laid out how to wire each section.

    • @TrekFanNCC-1701
      @TrekFanNCC-1701  2 года назад +1

      @@davidward9487 I tell you, that is so true with the decals. Aren't decals just sheets that are printed out and packaged? I really don't know how they are made but the profit margin must be huge. For my 1:350 Refit, I am using the Tenecontrols board for the lights. I also have the Tenacontrol board for the landing lights in the shuttle bay. That mega complete Refit board is pretty cool. When she starts up before launch, I love that. =-D

      @@TrekFanNCC-1701 it is special paper I know you can actually make your own decals and there are many who do. I'm not one of them. I understand people are saying the ink has gotten expensive. However I do think 100 a set, especially when you're mass producing them . Is a bit ridiculous.
      For the landing lights maker sure you grind down BOTH sides of the led door the row closest to the fantail, and for the light under that I'd use an smd or you going to need to grind those too. I actually had bought those leds that are the size of a match head and used it there and fie the Rcs thrusters on the rear warp nacelles and the rcs thrusters around the deflector dish. They are plenty bright for those tight applications. I also used them on ther lower sensor dome. I actually bought 2mm flat leds and I'm hoping they will do the trick without grinding and I may use them for the whole sequence as they would be easier to glue than the round 3mm. I also have a feeling they will legit slide right into the torpedo piece . It almost looks like it's made for that exact led. I also think there are a lot of places those flats will really be a benefit. For instance the light that lights up the outer warp nacelles. And I got it for my tos to light up the rear upper lights and green dome. For the tos nacelles I bought 3mm fast flashing rgbs and orange 3mm lights. I'm also going to add 2 pin jst connectors to the motors and lights. So if I need to repair or replace them it will be very straightforward and easy. Let's be honest you can paint the windows...... it's the rotating and twinkling bussard collectors that make that ship pop.
      Oh and for the refit. I got 20 gauge 3/8 steel tubing for this one. About 8 bucks for two from Amazon shipped and you can run alot of 28 or 30 gauge wire up there. I'm debating on weather or not to put the control board in the ship or in the base.... I got 5 nice momentary switches that fit neatly on the dry dock base. Exactly how I did this with the last one except I bought the tubing from one of the trek places and it was copper tubing. I prefer the steel and it was cheaper. You have to open the hole in the base and deflector dish slightly I honed it carefully with a 3/8 dril bit. I look forward to seeing your refit build. May the wind be on our backs.......

      Jerry Bourget TenaControls has wicked electronics for the refit also. You'll also want to get some accurrizing parts from Don's Light & Magic for the refit (also has the ST:V landing bay and the Officers Mess from ST:6 in case you want to build the NCC-1701-A), and the extra photo etched frets for both kits from Paragraphix.

I just got the tenacontrols nav/strobe board. I bought 75rpm motors, strip lighting, and 3mm rgbs . Starship modeler store has a very nice set of decals for the shuttles and work bees. They are way more detailed than the ones in the kit. Also as I just used the aztec decals, I used duplicator white pearl over a base coat of white. It has a better pearl shimmer to it than the tamiya and it shows through the aztec decals better as it picks up the surrounding room lighting and really pops. It is a acrylic lacquer and went down really smooth and took well withe the testors clear over it. I picked it up at a carquest auto parts store for $8.95 for a 8 ounce can compared to around $6.95 for a 3 ounce can of the tamiya. If you want to research it, it is the pearl white that Toyota uses. It almost has a sort of way of showing a very faint blue or light pinkish effect when light hits it at certain angles almost like the aztecs that are painted on with the transparent paints and masks.

    • @eltorpedo67
      @eltorpedo67 6 лет назад

      Well I can imagine maybe cosmic dust and meteorite strikes etc. might build up some grime or wear marks. At least that’s probably what the Star Trek designers imagined but I don’t want that.

    • @savinglivesofourown
      @savinglivesofourown 6 лет назад +1

      Weathering is not always about outside forces. Exhaust of chemicals, fluid leaks, radiation burns around the nacelles and out-gassing can wreak havoc on a spit and polish starship exterior. Just think of the latrine processors after Taco Night!

    • @AvengerII
      @AvengerII 6 лет назад

      There's also the not-so-inconsiderable fact that this is a ship routinely travelling in the neighborhood of 1/4 lightspeed when not in warp!
      At that velocity, even hitting a small pebble of rock would scar the hull. The deflector is SUPPOSED to direct matter away from the ship's path but I would imagine damage can happen in orbit or it will get in a position where the deflector field/beams don't sweep things out of the way unless the deflector field is omnidirectional. The ship would be mainly concerned about what's coming from the front.
      No weather in space? That's NOT true. There is this thing called radiation and there are multiple kinds besides solar radiation/UV light and so on but UV light alone does a lot of damage to painted surfaces. People who built models years ago might have used paints that yellowed over time or own models and toys made of white plastic that reacted and turned yellow, too.
      Unless the Enterprise has the ability to block out all UV and radiation hazards in the space, the paint on the ship WILL fade, that's a fact of life. It happens to our ships and naval aircraft at sea, and has happened to the spacecraft left on the moon. In fact, the flags left on the moon have faded to white. The chemical dyes in the flags were constantly exposed to radiation for years and and were bleached.
      Right now, the roadster Musk's rocket put into space is slowly breaking down because the materials used in that car simply will not hold up to the radiation in space. It will break down most of the plastics, leather, and rubber in the that car. The metal framework and some of the fiberglass may survive but in 20-30 years there really won't be much left of that car and the dummy in a likelihood.

    Thank you for the comparison between the two kits. I am about to buy the 50th anniversary kit to get back into the hobby after a long time, but do you know which kit has a more complete photo etch set? I am confused because it looks like the Refit has a more complete photo etch set, is that true? By the way, which photo etch set do you recommend, Paragrafix or Green Strawberry? Thanks.

    • @TrekFanNCC-1701
      @TrekFanNCC-1701  5 лет назад +1

      Thank you for watching my video. To answer your question about the photo etch set, if you plan to light your 50th Anniversary model using the Polar Lights Deluxe Lighting kit the photo etch sets will be included. I used both the Paragragix Supplemental Photo Etch set and the Polar Lights deluxe lighting kit which had one also. It was a bit pricey. You can make a very nice model using the Polar Lights lighting kit. The Paragrafix is just extra. The Refit does have more in the photo etch set. But remember that is a much more difficult model to build and has more detail and small parts. I will be starting the 1:350 refit soon and I will be using the Paragrafix photo etch set. Polar Lights does not make a lighting kit for the refit. To tell you the truth, I never really have seen the green strawberry ones so I really couldn't tell about them. Best of luck with your kit! Maybe you can post videos of you build?

      Thank you for your answer. After what you said, I am decided on the 50th Anniversary model. I'll try to find the Polar Lights deluxe lighting kit with an affordable price, otherwise I'll buy those accessories separately. It looks like Paragrafix made two Photo Etch sets: Engine Grills and Supplemental. I just don't know if they completely replace the ones in the deluxe kit.
