I'm a little surprised that The Un-Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn't make the list. That film is just horrible, a total mess of a movie. Give me the first 2 Spidey movies by Sam Raimi over those Un-Amazing ones any day.

    My worst of the year:
    10. 'Unbroken'
A clichéd, overlong, boring affair depicting the same "strength of the human spirit" we've seen again and again AND AGAIN. Not to mention, the whole film being in the trailer.
    9. 'The Zero Theorem'
I'd never regret seeing a Terry Gilliam film. That being said, 'The Zero Theorem' was utter rubbish that made no sense even by its own standards. Production design aside, a terrible waste of time by talented artists.
    8. 'What If'
Every year a romantic comedy promises to "break conventional rom-com standards" yet never does such. 'What If' is the latest addition to this list of "witty" balls of fluff.
    7. 'The Interview'
Grown-men discussing genitalia for two hours. I'm with Kim Jong-un on this one.
    6. 'Godzilla'
I couldn't see what was happening most of the time, this film was so dimly-lit. I'm starting to wonder if that was a blessing. Made me think that if giant lizards and moths were fighting outside, I'd probably sleep through it.
    5. 'Transformers: Age of Extinction'
    PLEASE. JUST. STOP.
    4. 'Non-Stop'
Following that, a film that promised never to do so. In terms of action, anyway. I will simply say this, 'Taken on a Plane'.
    3. 'Annabelle'
Stupid, stupid, stupid. From the opening text to the closing, 'Annabelle' made me wish I was watching other cattle-prod stinkers 'The Conjuring' or 'Insidious'. At least they had one or two "jumpy moments". Annabelle didn't even have one.
    2. 'Bad Neighbours'
Congrats, Seth Rogen. You've made my list twice in one year. Not a single gag in this entire film. Zac Efron, why?
    1. 'The Amazing Spider-man 2'
Marc Webb manages to 'Spider-man 3' his franchise in the second instalment. Surely, that deserves a medal of some kind. The fight scenes made me feel like I was watching a video game, the performances were hammy to say the least, and the film was too long for its own good. Like one of those children's cereals that's made of bubble gum and bits of candy, 'The Amazing Spider-man 2' is a bouillabaisse of sickening treats that should know better than to overdose its audience on sugar.
My best of 2014 are as follows:
    10. 'The Reunion'
A compelling meta-study of power dynamics and social structure in the school system. A great debut by Swedish artist Anna Odell.
    9. 'Blue Ruin'
A fantastic example of what crowd funding can achieve. Brave, clever and with a great leading performance.
    8. 'Patrick's Day'
Technically being released this coming February, this is a terrific Irish film that depicts mental illness in an uncompromising and appropriate manner.
    7. 'Inside Llewyn Davis'
A grim yet often-times hilarious story of a man destined for lesser things.
    6. 'Boyhood'
Life doesn't give you bumpers, and neither does Richard Linklater.
    5. 'Whiplash'
Another technically-January release, 'Whiplash' is an electrifying piece that grabs you and compels you to move at its tempo. Terrific.
    4. 'The Rover'
Bleak, brilliant, engaging and with knockout central performances from Pattinson and, particularly, Pierce. A worthy follow-up to 2010's 'Animal Kingdom'.
    3. 'Locke'
Gripping, emotional and unbearably tense, 'Locke' is a remarkable story of a man wittingly self-destructing over the course of real time.
    2. 'The Raid 2'
Gareth Evans goes 'Godfather' with his beloved martial arts franchise. 'The Raid 2' is a ballet of bone-crunching, wince-inducing violence painted with vibrant reds and golds and accompanied by Joe Trapanese's haunting score. Establishes Evans as the best action director working today.
    1. 'Nightcrawler'
A zeitgeist chessboard-thriller that discusses consumer pessimism and social corruption in a morally-bankrupt world. Essential.

To all the people who say that "Transformers 4" wasn't "that bad"...
Just judged as a movie, this assesment might be correct.
    But consider this:
Not only is it again casually racist, and sexist... now it even expands the sexism to legaly-"justified" objectification of a minor... A new low.
    But even that aside:
"Transformers 4" made over a billion dollars at the box office. As a comparisson: "Interstellar" didn't make 700 millions. Now, why do I make this comparison?
Because both movies are spectacular. Both movies are accessable for the mainstream and aimed at them. Both movies are high-budget movies...
The difference: One of them is challanging for the audience, intelligent and made with real craftmanship. The other one is brainles and insulting.
And yet, the brainles and insulting one wins by a longshot at the box-office!
This is depressing. I don't object to stupid movies having a certain degree of success... but the fact that they are THAT succesfull... and so much more than movies where some actual passion went into... that's very, very depressing.

The thing is with films like Pudsey or Nativity 3 they sort of seem to know that they exist for the pure purpose of scamming a bit of money out of a minor fad. Nativity 3 director even said as much with 'who cares about the critics, we made money' (Paraphrased).
But with Transformers, yes the financial motivation is there. However everything about it from the trailers to the massive budgets indicates that someone thinks they're making something worthwhile. That terrifies me more than the existence of other bad movies.

    19. Delivery: The Beast Within
    18. Transcendence
    17. Lucy
    16. Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero
    15. Let's Be Cops

    13. Leprechaun: Origins

    10. Hellion
    9. I, Frankenstein
    8. 3 Days to Kill
    7. The November Man
    6. Tammy
    5. Planes: Fire and Rescue
    4. The Legend of Hercules

    2. Ouija
    1. Sex Tape
Dishonorable Mentions: Annie, Cesar Chaves, Annabelle, Transformers: Age of Extinction, No Good Deed, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Movies that I did not see that probably would have made the list: That Awkward Moment (couldn't make it halfway through the movie) Haunt (stopped watching about halfway), The Other Women (would never see it), Left Behind (sounds like an atrocity to the movie industry), Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (the first was OK, but this looked horrible with pun after pun after pun after pun!), and The Identical. Plus a good portion of the movies mentioned in this video.

Whilst I am no fan of Michael Bay, or indeed the Transformers films (bar the first, which was somewhat acceptable) I really do not feel that Age of Extinction is as crushingly, insultingly, lazily terrible as Pudsey The Movie. With Transformers 4 I feel that although there's nothing good about it, there really isn't anything in there that's worth hating on - Bay gives us his usual overblown head banging carnage, the blunt script, casual racism and sexism, but I couldn't help but just sigh and not rise to it, because it isn't worth hating on. Whereas Pudsey is just a full blown trash excuse to milk a talented dog for as much money as you possibly can. I'm sorry Mark, but your hatred for Michael Bay seems to be overstretching the mark recently - Age of Extinction is rubbish rubbish rubbish, but it simply isn't the worst film of the year.

I dont think he actually thinks this is the worst movie. Just that it isnt good at all and the fact that the makers cocky enough are to make these kind of movies and try to win best picture with it. I myself rather watch a bad movie from someone that is actually trying to make a good one and someone that tries to learn. Than a maybe better but still bad movie from michael bay who just tries to make money and doesnt even try to make a good movie because he will otherwise make less money. That is why i refuse to pay for transformers and only watch a pirated version.

Ellis, I totally agree. Yes, Transformers is rubbish but it's not in the same league of rubbish as Pudsey, Nativity 2 or even Sex Tape. I really think Kermode just blindly hates Michael Bay movies and that prejudice is getting in the way of his critical judgement. He'd deny this of course.

Snowpiercer, really?! That was one of the best films of 2014. A great story that also paid tribute to a wide variety of other films/books like 1984, Apocalypse Now and The Wizard Of Oz.

    • @JesseWolfboy

To be fair, there was a lot I enjoyed in SNOWPIERCER. I just had a lot of problems with it as well. I'm glad you like it, I can see why, and respect your opinion. It just didn't work for me personally… We also should be careful when we say something is the "best" or "worst" of the year. What we really mean is that something is our personal favorite, or our personal least favorite. There are plenty of movies I acknowledge are terrible, but I still love them...

You are probably the type who is still wondering when the sequel to No Country For Old Men is going to be!! Gone girl isn't about 'the plot', it's a study of fame and I guess you could call it madness in the modern world. It's a thought provoking piece. Personally, I think it's Fincher's most complete movie to date. I'm surprised it wasn't in his top ten best films.

I liked Horrible Bosses 2 :( Chris Pine was great in it. I also liked Pain & Gain so whatever. That dog movie looks unwatchable just from the clips he showed. Eek!
