This is brilliant! Tire your kid out with your quad, you're getting to fly and your spending time with your kid. Then when you get home they pass out from all the running and you can work on the quad! Brilliant
Enjoying your series very much...even if you've been flying fpv for a couple of years you can still learn some good tips and reminders of good practice. Well done :)
Thanks muchly. Yep, part of the reason I enjoy meeting up with other FPVers is that often you'll see that they've done something in a way you hadn't considered - so always learning learning learning :)
Thanks for doing this series, really helpful. Your description of your old 4s flight it exactly where I find myself, everything is fine belting around the sky but landings have always felt more a matter of luck than judgement.
I'd guarantee that if that kid would have sneaked up on your quad and tried to bat it out the sky, then your whirling blades of death injured him, that mum would have blamed you and "DRONES" would have been all over the news as child murderers. Good to see you warned her and flew away from the kid.
That's why as soon as I hear something nearby, I generally hover looking at myself - that way I can check who's approaching, and also time my "good morning" correctly
Just had to say, thanks for the content! Though this video has some age on it, I'm pretty new to the hobby myself. Currently at around 20hrs in DRL-sim and some tinkering with my EZ Pilot Pro. Anyway, I've found this series to be immensely helpful in grasping unassisted flight mode.
I'm hoping that some of these fundamentals stay relevant. This one is often overlooked by new pilots, as it's pretty easy to fly really quickly forwards, but more difficult to accurately fly slowly or land where you want to
Wow!!!What an amazing informative video!!! You've taught me so much and I appreciate you doing this my friend! I will watch again before I fly..I feel that I needed this to understand acro more...THANK YOU
nice tutorial video cuury ;D i got another tip for landing for beginners: get a big blue tarp for landing and pin it on the ground somehow. its big, its nice to see on the green grass and it also prevents it from getting grass and debris all over when you fail to land it perfectly and it tilts to some side with props still runnin. for me it was also easier to do the last couple of meters of your landing flight in angle or horizon mode instead of acro. to all those who gave probs for curry for flyin respectful: its meant nicely ofc but you dont need to do so.....its just common sense, everyone should do so. so its nothin special to get commented about. better save your words for those who are disrespectful and throwing a bad light on our hobby ;) (dont get me wrong there.....ofc its cool and good to fly safe and respectful like him.....but it is nothing special to mention. its like praising him for breathing out after breathing in, hope youre getting my point there)
Cheers - this was filmed in summer when everything was dry and the grass was pretty short, but I'm almost always out with both a tarp (to put all my gear on) and a landing mat - to aim for and keep the quads dry. The only thing I wouldn't recommend in landing is the shift to horizon/angle mode. If it works for you, then great - but I find that transitioning during flight can be very odd. Depends a lot on your camera angle, but feels like I'm getting into a fight with it. Always easier to have nice gentle rates that would allow you to fly down gently in acro.
First of all I love all of your videos and support! It's tricky for backwards orientation when your new to flying. I'm not talking fpv I'm just talking regular flying. I've been practicing every day now and still not where I want to be. Tons of more practice to do
You are talking about nose-in flying I presume ? It's a tricky one to get... and I must confess I'm not great at it because I just love to fly FPV all the time. But sim's are pretty good for building up your muscle memory here, and I always find that if you can keep it flying forwards at a regular pace then it's pretty easy to control. Keeping a nose-in hover though and making lots of tiny adjustments - that's still a struggle for me :)
CurryKitten well that's intimidating because your a great pilot. Im having a blast learning. Will try acro. That's the end goal. Everyone says stabilization mode will screw a person up so tomorrow going to jump right in. Hopefully taking it really slow won't cost me a fortune. Practice is what it seems to come down to. Happy flying
I blame the rise of the "camera platform". Before then, hobbyists knew how easily failures could happen and so it didn't occur to them to fly in anywhere dangerous
I completely disagree that disrespecting others while flying is the main reason for drone laws. The main reason is the rise of commercial use of these tools (drones), Amazon, Pizzahut, etc have all invested a ton of money into their new delivery systems. As an FPV pilot, I am saddened by the restriction being placed on us. But, I am all for the new technology and the progression of our race.. I for one will be happy with restricted flying if one day uber will come to pick me up in one of their flying cars.
@@dallasspohn6840 Okay... But Mate, Uber won´t pick you up with a UAV. Even electric land vehicles have big restrictions with ~400km range (without AC). If you want to get picked up by a flying uber car, you should befriend with fusion energy, otherwise (right now...), the trick won´t work. Not with the batteries produced today. ;-)
Sounds like a reasonable thing to do doesn't it... until you try flying it (albeit 6 years ago here ruclips.net/video/r-CzBhr3FSw/видео.html ) the problem is that it's really hard to work out your changing altitude and attitude. I felt completely out of control 1
If you do use a steep camera angle, couldn’t you just get the drone in moderately close and then land it flying LOS? Great series, thanks for making these videos.
You can - but it can be quite difficult (especially when new) to transition from goggles to LOS (worse if you have glasses like me) If you get to an angle which is impossible to land at normally, then going into a steep turn over your landing spot and dropping is the preferred method. It does fall out of the scope of the new flyers though as I don't want them cranking up the camera angle until they build up to that point
Hello there Mr. Kitten! I have recently found and subscribed to your channel. Your information is brilliantly put across. I have asked in the past on a few other channels, that I follow, to do some videos where the controls are "on screen" for us new flyers to "see" how the flying is accomplished... so, thank you! I have a realacc x210 and my problem with the camera angle is the uart plug for the receiver is in contact with my fpv camera, keeping me from getting the camera just a bit lower. Any suggestions to let the camera have bigger range of motion (on the downward angle) would be greatly appreciated. It's flyable, but I'm having the issue you showed in this video where the quad is creeping forward whilst I try and land. Sorry for the sorta long comment... ;-) Thanks for the videos and your time! -Jamie
Nice, thanks :) Great looking frame that x210, I almost got one before I realised I didn't need yet another frame. Sadly it does mean I don't have it in front of me so I can see how it fits. Having a quick google image search though, I can see that most people fix it to the top to give quite an up angle (great for racing) by there are also a few people that fix it forward on the bottom plate which seems to allow more sensible up angles. Is that a possibility on your setup. Is it a 1177 or a runcam swift which has it's own mount you could fix there and then adjust your angle to suit ?
CurryKitten Thank you for the suggestions. I have the x210 2600kv version that I built, also have the newer x210 frame coming that is now 214mm. I will look into using the mounts that come with the runcam, I generally am using the owl plus. I never thought about looking at google for images specifically for how others have their FPV cams mounted...😉. Cheers Jamie
great vids,im a total novice, have a dji spark and just bought a emax hawk but not had a go with it yet,got myself a gopro session to mount and thinking 25 degrees mount will be best to start ?
Yes - for freestyle flying, between 25-30 degrees works well. If you've not flown an acro quad before though, you might want to start without an HD camera on, because you're bound to connect with the ground a few times at first
Thanks again for a very informative video. I am learning so much going to go check my camera angle now. I am still a little apprehensive to try acro, it is nice today very little wind so maybe later. Lately it has been a steady 15 mph with 35mph gusts tried practicing one day and almost lost it in a very tall tree!!!! lolol just woooosh and it was headed straight left.
I had my camera at about your angle 30% the first time I tried acro "silly me" it lasted 20 seconds before dropping to the ground I then made the camera level and I could fly... 👍
Depends - ages ago (it was on a KK2 board that's how long ago) I connected the camera on a servo so it would angle according to the forward angle of the quad... it was impossible to fly like that ! But I'd be up for have a switch to set an angle for flight and an angle for landing
@@CurryKitten I was just flying my first drone which is an emax ez pilot and man, that camera angle is really high. It can't even tilt enough to make the camera level because it doesn't have acro mode. I was having a little trouble with my emax freestyle 2 because I had to go so fast, but I was able to adjust the camera down so forward movement isn't nearly as fast. It just made me think how cool it would be if I could make one of the switches on my radio move the camera angle for seeing level for slow flight and landing and move it up for fast flight. It would be cool. I'd love to see someone make it. Maybe I will after I've been in the hobby for a while. I'm pretty new.

Whilst the MWOSD is great for messing around with settings on the go, as the firmware has evolved, there's really less and less to do. Last few quads I've put together and they've flown great on the stock pids. Just want to Thank you, I tried acro FPV instead of LOS and it is Waaaaaay better and easier . I was getting a little discouraged but now I feel a lot better about learning it.
Nice tips, over some time I have now progressed to have a higher FPV angle. I always wondered wouldn't be good if someone made a small gamble for the FPV camera that adjusts the up tilt angle to a predetermined maximum that is effected by speed. This would help on ladings and also reduce on accidental crashing due to the angle of the FPV camera creating and illusion of stopping when its not. Wide angle lenses do help but still you can have problems adjusting. I still find landing with the up tilt hard and that is the way it is for speed, if you can put your craft in level mod just for landing this reduces any silly landings. This still dos not stop me having a hard landing on a hard floor due to the vortex under the craft and find I have to pull the throttle back fast as I get close to the floor to reduce bounce. Another good tip is to always land by something vertical and not in a open space. You have again noted this by landing by yourself. If you don`t like doing this take a kind of yardstick, something with clear identifiable markings (RED, WHITE horizontal stripes) and push it into the ground. You could also put a flag on top, this can be your landing stick that helps with height orientation/altitude off the ground as well as wind direction. Thank you again. Wynne (BoLt)
I tried the angle thing out several years ago using the gimbal output of a kk2 board into a tilt servo on my fpv camera. Basically as the tilt of the quad increased, so would the tilt of the camera (found the video ruclips.net/video/r-CzBhr3FSw/видео.html) I didn't like it at all at the time, felt very weird. However, the same setup using a manual control was quite good. So people have done similar things on mini quads, but as there's often the attitude of keeping them as light as possible, it's not common. Good tip on the stick - that's useful
Is it your daughter on the audio of your Taranis? Great video :) BTW will bangood deliver to my local post office if I'm not in, Since I live with my single mum and ima schoolboy and no one is at home on working days? Thanks for your help :)
Yes, that's her, and if you're not in the postie gets to keep it :) Just joking, yep - normal royal mail, they'll drop a card through your door and take it back to their depot for collection
I find changing to angle in flight - especially with a high camera tilt really disorientating. Quad feels like it's out of my hands. I'll stick with landing acro as well
That's such an odd thing to do. I tried it and my brain couldn't cope - but it'll depend a little on how extreme your camera angle is. If it's pointing up much then you'll constantly be fighting with a view of the sky. See previous videos about flying in acro at all times !
I perfectly land with any camera angle, its just a matter of getting used to it. Use simulators to practice may help a lot. Check my videos, my lands are perfect =)
Nice one - yes, it's possible to land with practice - but I would say don't jump into a high angle without slowly building up to give yourself some time to acclimatise
Landing!? What is this landing nonsense... I disarm 3 meters away from myself and let the quad cartwheel to me...like the dog in that meme video...😐 Landing is hard...
Landing is hard because too many people raise tilt their cameras up straight away so they can go fast in a straight line and so never learn the basic skill. You can get away with essentially crashing near yourself, but not if like me your field is 99% lake most of the year
I really like how clear and easy to understand your videos are
Thanks - I'm glad they are of use

Good tip on the stick - that's useful
flying at 0 tilt is fun even with many hours :)
i got this, master ;)
i keep learning from your playlist, i know you are busy, i just want to say thank you and best wishes for you :)
Is it your daughter on the audio of your Taranis? Great video :) BTW will bangood deliver to my local post office if I'm not in, Since I live with my single mum and ima schoolboy and no one is at home on working days? Thanks for your help :)
Yes, that's her, and if you're not in the postie gets to keep it :)
Just joking, yep - normal royal mail, they'll drop a card through your door and take it back to their depot for collection
Haha! Your comment made me laugh so much! Thanks so much I really appreciate all the help you've given me for getting into the hobby :)
I fly 55-60 degrees. It takes practice..
Land in angle mode. Fly in acro.
I find changing to angle in flight - especially with a high camera tilt really disorientating. Quad feels like it's out of my hands. I'll stick with landing acro as well
Now I know mines wwaaayyy to high lol
SSSIIXXX!!
;-P
Am I the only one that cheats and put it angle mode before I land?:)
I disarm 3 meters away from myself and let the quad cartwheel to me...like the dog in that meme video...😐
Landing is hard...
Landing is hard because too many people raise tilt their cameras up straight away so they can go fast in a straight line and so never learn the basic skill. You can get away with essentially crashing near yourself, but not if like me your field is 99% lake most of the year
