I'm sitting here, 40 years old, with this lump of sweet sentimentality in my chest, longing back to carefree days of videogames and anime and looping this at midnight :)
This is too good to be true! It's extremely sweet of her to actually come to America for a concert and also invited Sharyn to perform together in English way back in the day when the general popularity of anime was not even close to that of today!
Those 2 pointing at each other at the end is definitely the icing on the cake on what has to be the perfect collaboration between 2 different people who only voices one character in their respective languages. And talk about motivation! This song (even it's 5 minute track, specifically Scott's version) is the perfect morale and confidence booster.
I love how Sharon's all like "Uh, do I really have to dance like Chisa?" Still, I got shivers down my spine when she sang, "You are a pioneer, the same as me" at 1:58 Also, it's impressive that Chisa took the time to learn the English lyrics. Good for her!
Chisa is Sasami's voice actress in the Japanese version, and Sherry Lynn (aka Katie Ashley) voiced Sasami in the English versions, except GXP. Sharyn Scott performed the English versions of Chisa's songs.
AW MAN total nostalgia just hit me like a ton of bricks... this makes me so happy! I don't know why I teared up when both of them sung at the same time...
Damn, I really REALLY wish I was old enough to have gone to this concert back then, let alone appreciate it! Tenchi's nowhere near popular enough to warrant something like this again... and I live close to where they performed >.>
@@Schwarzorn I believe LD the forgot can go up to 480 p if so then I plan on sending a copy of the footage to a friend who may be able to use machine learning to improve it a little more
@@TalesOfGothic Oh, neat. Tho, even untouched, I imagine it'll look better than VHS. Of course, it'll still be covered in compression artifacts. Hell, I even have a new Blu-ray Disc release that has some yucky compression artifacts. Sucks. Well, if you ever rip the LD, try to let me know! Haha. I'd love to have this version on my iPod. Them alternating parts and then singing together is amazing. Melts my heart. 😄
2020 - Damn, I needed this! I miss these days of wild adventure in the age of VHS! Jeeze, I suddenly feel very old...Anyone know where to find the Pioneer music CDs?
This is so freaking cool. This is extremely rare where you'd see the original artist on stage with the artist that sang their song in a different language! Too Awesome!
I have learned something new. The quality of the vhs release was in 380p but what I have discovered is that laserdisc only have an improvement in quality up to 480p I confirmed this by watching a laserdisc rip of the tenchi muyo intro here on RUclips
It didn't air on Toonami until 2000. It was out dubbed in America on VHS for quite a few years before being aired on tv. It really wasn't until the recent explosion of anime in the mainstream that time that it was decided to air on that block, albeit very censored. The english version of the Tenchi series was also very popular at the time amongst anime fans, so that was also another reason for bringing it to Toonami, to cash in on its sucess :-)
I finally decided to give SoundCloud a go - I am pretty stubborn and have trouble finding new music. SoundCloud, even if gave me NOTHING ELSE, introduced me to... I have no idea how to characterize this genre. I love it so much!
It's my surprise that both of them playing the same character in Japanese and English have ever met and performed together by singing on the same stage. Is this a bonus video of something?
You know... English nonwithstanding, Chisa still has an amazing voice and it comes through in this performance and the Talent For Love performance. Her one problem, though, is her lack of stamina and the fact that she doesn't realize it. She keeps trying to do that, what I call the 'Idol Singer Dance Routine,' but she clearly doesn't have the stamina for it. That is readily apparent in the Tenchi Muyo! Live Concert. Great footage though! :)
This is so good that it drives me crazy wishing that it was a small vid to watch on my ipod and this song added to my list. Does anyone know the link for a free download with this song? if there is any?
Thats because its harder for Chisa to sing the english lyrics because she is used to the japanese lyrics. Kumi Koda also sang Real Emotion in english and they had translate the song to fit the music
As someone else who owns this on VHS, I wonder what the story for this was. Because there were some logistical hurdles to get thru to make it happen. Also I miss Pioneer English days. Back before Funimation owned everything and ruined everything by making it corporate and sterile.
Yes, they both played, or technically voiced a side character named Sasumi in the Anime (The one in red is the English dub voice, the other is the O.G. Japanese voice.)
hey be nice she has a beautiful voice and she sang the op of tenchi muyo japanese and if you listen carefully to tenchi muyo op eng dub you'll find out that it's not just sharyn who is singing also chisa. You would notice that in the earlier parts of the song, there is a distinct japanese-english accent then it shifts to american-english.
Some must be the executives of the North American and Japanese arms of Pioneer Electronics Corporation, who made the Tenchi Anime and some of the films. (I know that Kadokawa did "Midsummer's Eve" alongside Pioneer.)
It would've been nicer if Sharyn hadn't kept flubbing the lyrics. At least she did a good job ad libbing during those moments when she forgot the proper lines.
I love this song, it's one of my favourites in the series. Sharyn has got a beautiful voice i reckon. Chisa is fucking terrible though it seems so out of place.
@@melissaonchuru7745 You're clueless. Singing a song in a different language doesn't make you suddenly lose your sense of pitch. And yes, I can, and do, sing songs in other languages. And I stay in tune. Thanks for playing...now go sit down.

I'll never not love this

Nearly identical though the tears came from near start ;w;
Yup. The feels.
No joke, English versions of theme songs back in the 90s had a bunch of hidden gem singers.
still sitting here at 41 years old, loving this!! :D
This footage is now old enough to drink in the US...

Brings back so many memories! I'm listening to this with my wife at Saboten Con. All the yays!!!

Why not, Mari Iijima the original voice of Lin Minmei of Macross did the dub voice for her character in the ADVFilms dub of Macross.

I don't know if they'll have exactly what you're looking for, but cdjapan.co.jp have a very large catalogue.
I got lucky found a copy on eBay about a year ago
Dub & Sub together? The universe might implode again. The only thing to make this a total win is if they both cosplayed as Sasami.

I own this on laserdisc
I don’t have a player so I can’t upload but when I get one we’ll get this whole thing uploaded in 720
One thing I didn’t know about Laserdiscs is that they’re natively in composite video, not S-Video nor component video.
*chills*
Wow, that was a good moment.
VHS, LD... I gotta find this in SOME format. lol
wow i have a great time whit this video. thx very much
This is unironically really fucking cool.

@rbermea Sherry Lynn (aka Katie Ashley) was the voice of Sasami in the English version. She did sing the ending theme for the Mihoshi Special.
Awesome performance. This gave me goosebumps. Just as the song says "I'm a Pioneer" :)
This is so cool, I loved Tenchi Muyo and its dubbed songs and seeing them sung by the singer herself is just really cool
It was dubbed beginning in 1993 straight to video. The existing English dub was censored and aired on Toonami beginning in 2000.
It still absolutely amazes me how they covered all the Tenchi songs in English AND do an absolute fine job in doing so
Universe op is still performed by the Original singer. It’s not just a cover but a version
Huh, that so? That's so cool! Both versions are amazing, thanks for the neat little fun fact
It would've been REALLY AWESOME if Sharyn all of sudden started to sing in japanese…still love it though :)

Sharyn sounded great on this, but I happen to know she sounds even better NOW!

Thanks for upload !!
It's my surprise that both of them playing the same character in Japanese and English have ever met and performed together by singing on the same stage.

Read the description.
Also, AFAIK, it was never released on DVD.
sorry and thanks for your response.
I wrote a similar comment. It's so bizarre they decided to to do that! And this was back in the day when this kind of shows in the US was super rare.
Same thing I thought, there was no energy in the room outside of Sharyn and Chisa.
So when I find a laser disk player at a affordable cost I’ll rip this complete concert and link it in this thread
Turn your speakers on.

and in the later part of the song u can notice the tone of voice/pitch goes a little lower.
Thats because its harder for Chisa to sing the english lyrics because she is used to the japanese lyrics. Kumi Koda also sang Real Emotion in english and they had translate the song to fit the music

This has been bothering me... the Tenchi dub didn't air until 2000, right? Why were there English versions of the songs in '96? Just for giggles?
Chisa Yokoyama is now fluent in English.
I love it! I'm just wondering are they actually voice actresses for Tenchi Muyo, and if so who exactly do they play?
Yes, they both played, or technically voiced a side character named Sasumi in the Anime (The one in red is the English dub voice, the other is the O.G. Japanese voice.)
Funny how the band's name is "The Heaven & Earth Band"....And Tenchi means...Anyone who got that, yeah...
I don't get that could someone please explain to me?..or you mister?
@@animususer174 Tenchi literally means Sky/Heaven (天) and Earth (地)

I wonder who they were singing for, actually...

Anyone else think that Jodi Benson would kick *** if she tried this one?
2 people aren't pioneers...
the audience looks a little bit off to me. They don't look like the people you did expect to show up to see Chisa Yokoyama.
xDDDDD
Interesting but it sucks I'll stick to the mp3s and openings and endings. lol
nothing against chisa, but this song would have sounded better if sharyn had sung it alone
or at least just sung her original part it's the accent i think that's off
It would've been nicer if Sharyn hadn't kept flubbing the lyrics. At least she did a good job ad libbing during those moments when she forgot the proper lines.

i know man they had no power AT ALL
She's great, no doubt, but the overall band sound wasn't good. The power of the song didn't come through.
The audience seems very very bored.
Well, this was not a concert. This was actually some special meeting or assembly, or something like that.
Chisa is abysmal. Sharyn should have sung this by herself...gorgeous powerful voice.
Shut up! You try singing a song in a different language than your native tongue in, record it and post to see what people think. She did great! 😡

What do you expect from an English dubbed Anime theme from the 90s?
